Tom Brooks Foote - January 01, 1953 - April 29, 2024

Departed: 04/29/2024 (San Marcos)
Obituary Preview: Tom Brooks Foote was born in Houston, TX early on January 1, 1953. It just so happened that he was the first baby born in Houston that year and as a result got his picture printed in the Houston Press. He was named for his uncle, SSgt Tom Brooks Foote, who served in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was killed in action over Germany in 1944. Tommy, as he was called from birth, loved country music early on, following his dad, John, who loved country music with a passion his whole life. Tommy began playing the drums in high school in the early '60s and while attending college at Southwest Texas State, (now Texas State University) Tommy was one of the founding members of a band called Stoney Ridge. The band later became Ace in the Hole, but they needed a lead vocalist, so they posted a wanted ad on a school bulletin board seeking auditions. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in history in 1975, Tommy briefly stepped away from the band and returned to Houston. A few months went by, when "the boys" called urging his return to the drums, as they had auditioned a new singer who was "going to make them all famous"; George Strait, and as they say: the rest is history.
Tommy played a pivotal role in George's career - In 1983, he put down the drumsticks and became his Road Manager, ensuring the smooth operation of the band's tours and performances. Tommy remained dedicated to his role for 48 +years, until his passing on April 29, 2024, leaving behind a legacy in the world of country music. Tommy loved San Marcos and made it his hometown after college, where he had many treasured friends and spent time with his family in Wimberley, Tx. Tommy was known for his loyal support and generosity to his alma mater, but his true passion was baseball and his beloved Houston Astros team! His favorite pastime was watching the Astros from his recliner, talking baseball stats or attending games in person, not to mention all the World Series Victories! Tommy served on the Christus Santa Rosa San Marcos Foundation board for 10 years, facilitating the musical talent for the annual fundraising Galas. Tommy worked with many clubs and dance halls in Texas booking their talent, Mo's place in Katy, TX held a special place in Tommy’s heart.
Tommy is survived by his sister, Joan Foote Jenkins, his niece Jessica Anderson and her husband Casey Cannon, his nephew John Travis Jenkins, his wife Whitney and the grandnephews he adored: Brooks & Bennett Jenkins. He is also survived by his longtime girlfriend Ann Guilford, three stepdaughters from a previous marriage who he always considered "his girls" and remained committed to them and their children until the end: Lisa Burleson, Ashley McKellar and Jessica Tessmer. Many Cousins, Lifelong Friends and his entire Country Music Family. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Thursday June 13, 2024 @ 1:00 p.m. for friends and family, at the San Marcos Academy Chapel, reception following, 2801 Ranch Rd. 12 San Marcos, TX 78666

David, known affectionately as "Dave" to his friends and family, was born on October 3, 1959, in Savannah, Georgia. Although not a native Texan, he got here as fast as he could! He spent his final moments surrounded by loved ones in San Marcos, Texas.
David's life was one of service and adventure. Shortly after graduating from Lanier High School in Austin, Texas, he joined the United States Army, setting the foundation for what would be a commendable 38-year career. His military journey took him from the barracks of Germany for two years to the diverse landscapes of Louisiana, Texas, Oregon, and Wyoming. His dedication to his country was unwavering, as evidenced by multiple assignments and promotions. His achievements included Command Leader, First Sergeant and he later completed his military career with the rank of CW2 - WS 12 Inspection Section Supervisor for the maintenance/mechanic shop at Camp Mabry in Austin, Texas. The military roles he held inspired those around him. Dave and Connie were married at Texas Old Town on November 24, 2013 and shared many mutual interests. The love they shared was unending. They enjoyed horseback riding, fishing at the Texas coast, building at Sandcastle's Day at SPI with the San Marcos Suns, listening to tunes by The Stringtown Band, camping, trail rides, dancing, going to rodeos, barbequing, catering, hosting game nights, playing dominoes with Shelly and Sean, and visiting with their “Family on the Hill”. Dave was the love of Connie’s life and brought her joy and unconditional love. He accepted her children, Cassie Lane and Torrie Blake as his own. They had many joyous family events in which Dave brought about the love, joy and laughter to the group. Up until the end, Dave and Connie regularly attended Texas State University football games with stepdaughter, Cassie Lane; Dave was her special “Bonus Dad.”
Beyond his military service, David was a Godly man of many passions. Dave was an active member of the San Marcos Community Church had had a strong connection with his fellow brothers in Christ, who met on Fridays for their weekly Prayer Groups. Dave attended when he could. A devoted fan of NASCAR, he never missed a chance to cheer on his favorite driver, Chase Elliott, #9, especially when joined by his best buddy, Aaron Ray Baker. From March to October, their camaraderie was a testament to the joy of shared interests. David's love for the outdoors was evident in his enthusiasm for hunting on the Mountain View Ranch in South Texas alongside of friends, Robert and Scott. He loved participating in rifle matches, fishing, camping, and barbecuing with good friend, Bryan Richards. Dave won multiple BBQ championships, of which he was very proud. Dave and Connie together catered many graduations, weddings, car shows, birthdays, anniversaries and other family events throughout the years with the help of their stepdaughter, Cassie Lane. He found solace in the quiet moments of searching for historical artifacts with his friend Randy Woodard, and he could often be found regaling others with tales of his discoveries with joy and laughter. David's storytelling was a gift he shared freely, loudly and with excitement, much to the delight of his family and friends.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Connie Martin-Thompson, his son David Wayne Thompson Jr., known as "D," and his stepdaughters Amber Marie Drabek, Cassie Lane Martin, and Torrie Blake Martin. He was a brother to Stephen Edward Thompson and his wife Gina, sister, Jennifer Thompson Lacombe and husband Dominick Jr., as well as to his "other brothers," Steven Don Logan and his wife Joyce, and David Bruce Logan and his wife Gayla Sue. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you where you go."
David's story is one of a life well-lived and well-loved. His presence will be profoundly missed, but his memory will continue to inspire all who knew him. Febronio R. Cortez - September 06, 1942 - March 27, 2024

Departed: 03/27/2024 (San Marcos)
Obituary Preview: Febronio R. Cortez, affectionately known as "Moño", passed away on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at the age of 81 in his childhood home, in San Marcos, Texas.
Born in Staples, Texas on September 6, 1942, he was the son of the late Demetrio Cortez and Martina Cortez (Santos). He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Elena H. Cortez. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter, kindness, and unwavering gentleness. Moño's zest for life and his hearty laugh became a beacon of joy throughout his 81 years, touching the hearts of all who had the pleasure of crossing his path.
Family was the cornerstone of Moño's world. He was a beloved figure in the lives of his wife, Elena, his children Rachael, Demetrio, and Pricilla, grandchildren Eric, Christina, David, Karina, Elijah (Ashley), Daniel, Jessica, Emelia Rae, Gabriella, and Elias. Great-grandchildren Nevaeh, Maricela, Adalina, Aviana, Aamira, Aaliyah, Alexis, Aubrey, Mercedes, and Madison.
His siblings, whom he loved dearly, Otilia (Jose) Cerda, Conrado (Eloisa/Etefena) Cortez, Victorina (Abel/Frank) Rosales, Elisa (John) Polanco, Reyes (Elisa) Cortez, Elida (Samuel, Sr.) Garza, Joventino (Angelita/Judy) Cortez, Maria (Pedro) Gonzales, Elidia (Genaro) Robles, Pauline (Candido) Pina, and Juan (Martha) Cortez. Four generations of numerous nieces and nephews and counting, cousins, his brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, all-in-laws, and many lifelong friends. He had a deep love for each one of them.
Moño's life was one of perseverance and hard work. Despite completing his formal education at the ninth-grade level, from San Marcos High School, he was a lifelong learner who taught by example. His career was as diverse as his interests, taking him from the fields as a migrant worker to the hustle of a meat processor, the dedication of a cement truck driver, and a proud maintenance worker for the San Marcos Outlet Mall in which he worked for almost 30 years. Each role he embraced with the same dedication and pride, leaving a mark of excellence wherever he went.
Moño's love for the Dallas Cowboys was only rivaled by his passion for music and his beloved roosters. He could often be found cheering on his favorite team or whistling along to a tune with a sparkle in his eye. His hobbies were not mere pastimes but a way to connect with others, share his joy, and express his vivacious spirit.
Those who knew Moño would agree that to describe him as simply "funny, gentle, and kind" would be an understatement. He was the personification of these qualities, a man whose humor could light up the darkest room, whose gentleness could calm the stormiest of seas, and whose kindness could warm the coldest of hearts. His presence was a gift, and his absence will be felt deeply by the many lives he touched.
Moño was a member of the Church of Christ. Moño loved the fellowship of the church, the teachings and believed in repentance, baptismal, and living a life of love and forgiveness. Later in his life, as an avid believer, he made it a point to share the gospel of being baptized, repentance, and building a solid foundation in faith. He encouraged all to attend church and build a faithful relationship with our Lord. His message will continue to live in our hearts, and he will be honored by sharing this message.
As we bid farewell to Febronio R. Cortez, let us not dwell on the sorrow of his departure but celebrate the immeasurable impact he made on this world. Let us carry forward the echoes of his laughter, the softness of his gentle spirit, and the warmth of his kindness. In doing so, we honor his memory and ensure that his legacy endures.
On Wednesday evening, April 3, 2024, we will celebrate a man who was the heart of his family. If you would like to participate, we will hold a celebration of his life and honor him by wearing Dallas Cowboy shirts or swag, or by wearing something in “Cowboys” blue, silver, or white.
Thursday morning, April 4, 2024, 10am, Christian Service will be held and lead by members of the Church of Christ. We will be invited to say our final goodbyes.
Following the conclusion of the service, everyone is invited to join the family at Cuauhtemoc Hall, 1100 Patton Street, San Marcos, Texas 78666 for fellowship.
Moño’s family would like to thank everyone who sent their love, called, texted, messaged, and visited. The outpouring of love, hugs, food, companionship and simply checking in on the family is very much appreciated.
The family would like to thank the following for the care and support provided by his care team. - Wellmed at San Marcos, Dr. Teresa K Smith-Knupple and every care team member who helped in his care - LungDocs, Dr. Rajesh Shetty and care team members - Austin Heart, Dr. Alap Jani, and care team members - Home Health Care Providers of Texas, Hallie Wilkenson and care team members - Seton Kyle Hospital, Maddie, PA, Dr. DelosSantos, and all the 4th floor RNs and care team members who were so patient and understanding with him
May we all strive to leave such an indelible mark on the lives we touch, as Moño did on ours.

Dr. Peter R. Rhodes - July 08, 1937 - March 22, 2024

Departed: 03/22/2024 (San Marcos)
Obituary Preview: Dr. Peter Ronald Rhodes, a beacon of kindness, gentleness, generosity, and intelligence, passed away peacefully due to natural causes on March 22, 2024, in San Marcos, Texas. Born on July 8, 1937, in Buffalo, New York, Peter's life was a testament to his enduring love for his family, his passion for science, and his love of adventure and the natural world.
Peter's journey through life was one of dedication and love. He found his lifelong partner in Carolyn, his wife of 59 years, who was not only his beloved spouse, but also his best friend. Together, they built a life filled with joy, laughter, music, respect, and cherished memories. Peter’s legacy continues through his children, their spouses, and their grandchildren who brought immeasurable joy to Peter's life: Sylvia Rhodes, her husband Landon Hancock, and their son Keith; Christopher Rhodes, his wife Julie, and their sons Joshua and Moise; and Carl Rhodes, his wife Sarah, and their children Rebecca and Evan. Peter was the older brother of his two siblings and cared deeply for them, their spouses and their children: his late brother Robert, Robert's wife Judy, and their son Jeff, Jeff’s wife Kirsten and son Jackson, and Peter's sister, Flora Lee Burkholder, her husband David, and their daughter Karen Patton, Karen’s husband Owen and their two sons, Derek and Lucas.
Growing up in Clarence Center near Buffalo, Peter showed curiosity and passion for science that would define his professional life. He was a man of great intellect, earning his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He had a strong work ethic and was known for considering challenges from a variety of perspectives and proposing novel solutions to complex problems. Peter’s career as a corrosion scientist at Shell Oil Company in Houston spanned over three decades, where he made significant contributions, received awards, and earned the respect of his colleagues worldwide.
During World War II, Peter spent part of his youth in La Jolla, California, where his father Edgar Peter Rhodes worked with a covert operation in the Mojave Desert designing airplanes for the war effort. His father’s plane is currently displayed in the Smithsonian Museum.
Peter’s love for adventure and travel was a testament to his curious spirit. He enjoyed birding, embarking on many trips to observe and appreciate the natural world. He had an intense interest for people and cultures, and always took time to engage with locals during his travels. His adventures took him to destinations around the globe, including Alaska, Peru, France, Spain, Nepal, Russia, and Japan. During his retirement, he studied Spanish and taught classes in English as a second language.
The greatest adventure of all was the life he shared with his family. Peter (a.k.a. Grandpa Pete) was known for being a great storyteller and for being wonderfully silly and playful with his grandchildren, traits that will be fondly remembered and deeply missed and that created memories that will be dearly cherished.
Those who knew Peter would describe him as kind, generous, intelligent, and loyal. His kind and generous nature was evident in every aspect of his life, from the way he loved his family to the way he engaged with his work. He listened with an open heart, patience, and understanding. He gave his guidance and wisdom with kindness, always thinking of others and putting others’ needs above his own.
Peter is survived by a family that adores him, friends who admire him, and a world that is better for having had him in it. His memory will continue to inspire and guide those he leaves behind. He will be deeply missed.
Peter would be pleased if, in lieu of flowers, donations were sent to the San Marcos River Foundation, www.sanmarcosriver.org.
