Obituary Preview: William J. Sturm, Jr., 93, of Castleton, passed away at Albany Medical Center on April 12, 2024. Born in Albany to the late William and Ella (Harris) Sturm, he was raised in Nassau before moving to Castleton in 1983. William served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War and was awarded the Korean Service Medal with three bronze stars. He retired from Dealer Sales Agency as the northeast salesman. William was very handy and was a master carpenter, avid hunter and outdoorsman and an exceptional gardener.
William is survived by his wife Laura M. Sturm of Castleton; son, William J. Sturm III of Castleton; beloved grandson Eric Hammell; daughters, Deborah Dansereau of Albany and Pamela Hammell of Castleton; grandchildren, Timothy, Amanda, Andrea, and Brittany. He is also survived by five great grandchildren, soon to be six in June and his beloved cat Doe E Biscuits. He was predeceased by his sister Eleanora Righter.
A Funeral service for William will be held on Friday, April 19 at 10:00am at the Thomas P. Mooney Funeral Home, 11 Elm St. Nassau. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Willam’s family on Thursday evening from 5-7 p.m. Interment will be in the Nassau-Schodack Cemetery, Rt. 203, Nassau immediately following the service.

Long. She was a teacher's aide at BOCES Questar III, in East Greenbush. Mary was a member of the Tsatsawassa Women's Auxiliary and the Tamarac Outdoorsmen Sportsman Club. She enjoyed completing scratch offs, poetry, drawing, and coloring.
In addition to her husband and father, she was predeceased by her brother, Clark Salmon and her sister, Elizabeth Salmon. Mary is survived by, her sons; Richard W. (Caitlin Heskett) and Jimmy J. (Tina Knights) Long, her grandson; Logan C.J. Long, her brothers; Kenneth Vollor, James Salmon, and Dennis Salmon, her sister; Jo-Ann (late Charles Sr.) McDonald.

Mary Ellen was born in Troy, NY to the late Mary (Vandekerckhove) and James Wachtel. She worked for many years as an engineer at the New York Telephone Company, in Albany, NY. Mary Ellen was a resident of East Nassau for over 50 years and a longtime communicant of St. Mary’s of the Nativity Parish, in Nassau. She was an accomplished quilter and spinner and enjoyed being part of organizations, which revolved around those activities. Mary Ellen was also a lover of animals, especially horses, which for many years she had at her home. She was very artistic and an amazing cook and baker. Mary Ellen had a love for the ocean, gardening, and nature.
Mary Ellen was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Edward J. Carabis; her brother, James Wachtel; and her sister, Sr. Martha Wachtel, CSJ. She is survived by her children, James Carabis and Ellen (James) Mattrazzo; her brother, Peter (Shirley) Wachtel; and several nieces and nephews.

Pflueger III, PhD, 84, of Nassau, formally from Pottsville, PA passed away on February 16, 2024, with his family, who had helped him through the last 7 years of illness, by his side. Born in Pottsville, PA to the late Edward II and Eva Pflueger, he was ordained in May of 1965 in Pennsylvania and eventually left the priesthood to pursue his career in psychology. He was always giving to his community and helped to found Circles of Mercy in Rensselaer, NY as well as programs to help veterans such as Veterans Industries, prior to his retirement from the Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany, NY in 1999.
He focused much of his energy on his family, especially on his son Eddie to make sure no matter what obstacles lay in front of him due to his disability that he would learn to be a strong independent man and his peers would see him as an equal.
Edward is survived by his children, Eva M. Pflueger of Ballston Spa, NY, Catherine M. (Stephen) Brennan, of Cohoes, NY and Edward L. Pflueger IV of Nassau, NY; grandchildren Kendrik J. Cole, Kory V. Hogan Jr., Shyaira Hogan, Kyla M. Brennan, Alexandra E. Brennan, and Lily M. Brennan. He is also survived by his great granddaughter Ivy Brennan.

Anna M. Zido - February 21, 1928 - January 27, 2024

Obituary Preview: East Schodack- Anna M. Zido, 95, entered into eternal rest on January 27, 2024. Anna was born on February 21, 1928, in Richmond Hills, Queens, to Joseph and Emma Baque. She graduated from John Adams High School in Ozone Park, Queens. Anna married the love of her life, Stephen P. Zido, on September 5, 1949, and spent nearly 65 years together in loving companionship.
In the late 1940s, Anna worked as a stenographer in Manhattan for a sports magazine. However, her goal in life was to have a family. She loved children and loved raising her four sons and two grandchildren.
In 1978, she moved to East Schodack with her husband, youngest son David, and two grandchildren, Stephen, and Christine. She was a member of St. Mary’s of the Nativity Church in Nassau, St. Mary’s Altar Rosary Society, and prayer group. She said the rosary every day until her health prevented her from continuing to do so.
Anna loved flowers and was a member of the East Schodack Garden Club. She also loved to read and was a member of the Nassau Library Book Club. She enjoyed playing Scrabble, listening to music, indulging in chocolate milkshakes and ice cream, and spending time at the “DOS Beach” with Christine and Irene.
One of Anna’s greatest strengths was her adaptability to life’s circumstances. She was kind, accepting, and generous, often putting others’ needs above her own.
Anna was predeceased by her loving husband, Stephen P., her son, Stephen J. (and daughter-in-law Christina). She is survived by her sons Joseph (Mark), Thomas (Noreen), and David (Sandra), her grandchildren Stephen D. (Rebecca), Christine (Jeannine), great-granddaughter Graciana, nieces, nephews, and extended family.
The family would like to thank the Daughters of Sarah Community for Seniors staff for their caregiving and kind support.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, at 11:30 a.m. at St Mary’s of the Nativity Church, 26 Church St. Nassau, NY 12123. Obituary Preview: Nassau- Hester E. “Sue” (Brennan) Mazzotti, age 99, of Nassau passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home on Thursday, January 25, 2024. Hester was born on the family farm in Ellenburg, NY to the late Elizabeth (Boyle) and Lawrence Brennan and spent her formative years in Chicopee, MA. She graduated from Chicopee High School, Chicopee, MA, and the Springfield Hospital School of Nursing, Springfield, MA. Hester was married to the late Samuel J. Mazzotti, whom she met while treating him for severe injuries sustained during World War II, at the Cushing General Hospital, in Framingham, MA. She was a Registered Nurse and spent many years as a Nursing Supervisor, with the last 20 years at the Van Rensselaer Manor Nursing Home. Hester was a longtime communicant of St. Mary’s of the Nativity Church, in Nassau. She was very proud of her Irish heritage and enjoyed researching her genealogy before the internet. Hester traveled many times to Ireland to further her genealogical research. She also enjoyed gardening, reading, her Yorkie Heidi, and a glass of Bailey’s during the holidays. Every summer she would travel to Cape Cod and go leaf peeping in Vermont in the fall. Hester also enjoyed time spent in the Adirondacks, particularly at her camp at Lake Wakonda. She was a kind and generous person, who was always there when you needed her.
Hester is survived by her children, Stephen E. (Addie) Mazzotti of Nassau; Samuel M. Mazzotti of Schenectady; Sharon L. (Daniel) Colabelli of Old Chatham; her granddaughter, Michelle L. Mazzotti of Concord, CA; step-grandson Daniel F. Colabelli of Rensselaer; step-granddaughters, Megan (Ben) Lombard of Saratoga, Brooke (Eric) Hotaling of Kinnelon, NJ; step-great grandchildren, Elliot Lombard, Adilynn Hotaling, and Wesley Hotaling, numerous nieces and nephews; and her “granddog” Dewey, whom she had a special bond with.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her siblings, Raymond Brennan, Lawrence Brennan, Harry Brennan, Arthur Brennan, and John Brennan, whom she dearly loved and missed daily.
The family would like to thank Laura and Lynda from Ably TBI NHTD, Linda from the Eddy Heritage House Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, the NurseCore and All-Metro Health Care staff, and Community Hospice for their kindness and support.

Born in Albany, he was the son of the late John and Mary Ann Hollner Ertel. He was a 1972 graduate of Columbia High School in East Greenbush. A lifelong resident of Nassau, George was well known around town and could often be found socializing with neighbors and friends at one of the local convenience stores over a cup of coffee. George owned and operated his own contracting company for over 45 years. When he wasn’t hard at work, he enjoyed deer hunting, golfing, and playing Texas hold ‘em. George was predeceased by his sister, Merry C. Swenson, and two brothers, Jack (John) Ertel and Daniel Ertel. George is survived by his ex-wife and mother of his children, Patricia Laraway of South Carolina. George was a devoted father to Nicolle T. Noyes (Zareski), Kadie I. Acosta (Ertel) and George T. Ertel, Jr., all of Nassau. He was a beloved Grandfather to Jacob, Gabrielle & Sophia Noyes. He is also survived by his brother, James Ertel. An interment of ashes is planned for this spring at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Nassau. Per George’s wishes there will be no services. The family will hold a private celebration of life at a later date.

Joe was active in Charlie’s Pantry at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, in New Lebanon and the Lebanon Valley Knights of Columbus Council #9639.
In addition to his wife, Joe is survived by his sons; Joseph (Leona Hall) Marcello III and Justin Marcello, his daughters; Sallieanne Bott and Christina (Jacob Beckwith) Marcello, his brother; George Marcello, his grandchildren; Ashley (Joseph Saviano), Christopher, Troy (Danielle LaBelle), Katelynn, Jolieanna, Joycelynn, and Shianne, as well as six great grandchildren.

Obituary Preview: Richard L. Vanderbilt, of Glenmont, a devoted family man and a respected member of the community, passed away on December 31, 2023, at the age of 74. He was born on October 10, 1949, in Albany, NY, to his loving parents, Elwood Vanderbilt and the late Doris (Pedersen) Vanderbilt. Richard's passing has left a profound void in the lives of his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Richard led a life full of achievement and service. After graduating from SUNY Cobleskill with an Associate's Degree in Agriculture, he served his country with pride in the Army National Guard.
During his career, Richard served on the Bethlehem Police Department, retiring as a Lieutenant after years of dedicated service to the community. During his time with the police department, he graduated from the prestigious FBI Academy. Following his retirement, he found success as the owner of Kuhns Brothers Log Homes. Throughout his varied career, Richard worked as an investigator for the NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets, as well as for CSX, indulging his passion for trains.
Richard's commitment to his faith was unwavering, and he actively participated in the Onesquethaw Reformed Church. He greatly enjoyed contributing to the Christian Music Ministry, sharing his love for music and spreading joy to others. His involvement in the church community exemplified his compassionate and kind nature.
Richard was a loving father to his children, Heather (Andrew) Noeth, Alyssa Vanderbilt, Sidney Vanderbilt, and Niles Vanderbilt. He shared a special bond with his siblings, Deborah Vanderbilt, Alice Zabel, and Mary Ellen (David) Domblewski, who cherished the memories they built together throughout their lives.
In addition to his children and siblings, Richard leaves behind the legacy of two cherished granddaughters, Anastasia and Harlow Noeth as well as several nieces and nephews.
To honor Richard's life and to celebrate his indelible spirit, calling hours will take place at the Onesquethaw Reformed Church on January 4, 2024, from 10a.m. to 12p.m. The funeral service will be private at the convenience of the family.

She was the first born to the late James Sidney and Marguerite (nee McShane) Schiller. She is predeceased by her sister Marguerite Riordan. She is survived by her sisters, Patricia Caruso and Charlene Azzoline, and her brothers, James (Mary Lynne) Schiller and Jerome (Ellen) Schiller. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, and many friends.
Before her retirement, Marianne worked for many years in the banking industry, starting with State Bank of Albany and ending with Bank of America. Marianne and Don loved cruising, they cruised all over the world. She had a great love for animals and fostered many dogs, cats, and rabbits. She was a member of the American Legion Post 1268 Auxiliary.
Relatives and friends are invited to calling hours on Wednesday, December 27, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a funeral service to follow at 2 p.m., at the Thomas P. Mooney Funeral Home, 11 Elm St. Nassau. A celebration of her life (including food, because she loved Don’s cooking) will immediately follow the service at the Chandler Young Veterans Association, 7 Lyons Lake Road, Nassau.

Edward Lundstrom, “Lumpy”, 75, peacefully passed away in his sleep at home with his companion Libby of 19 years by his side. Edward was predeceased by his mother and father Jenny and James Lundstrom; son, Brendon; sister, Dawn and nephew Brian.
Ed is survived by his estranged son Andre; brother, James; sister, Gail and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves a cousin, Leigh Smith from Florida, whom he was very fond of and his longtime friend H.A. Cannabush, they were Harley riders for many years.
Almost every morning he would call his special “buddy” Lesley. They would talk about the news and several other topics. His most cherished treasure was his big German Shephard, Axel. Ed was a father figure to Jody and Justin and Grampy “O.T.” to several grandchildren and great grandchildren. He had many other friends he was very close to.
For over 40 years he traveled to California and back and visited many countries as well. When he finally came back to New York about 20 years ago he settled for the quiet life. Some of his vacations were by the ocean and others were camping in the woods. His other passion was spending time in New York City where he lived for many years. He always needed his N.Y.C. fix. The last few years of his life he spent mostly at home due to failing health. He loved sitting on the deck and watching the deer come into the yard and settle down by the pond. There was so much wildlife that came to visit and that was something that he really enjoyed.
His final request was to have no services and to be cremated so he could stay on his little slice of heaven.

Bob was born on January 16, 1935, to Robert and Alice M. Van Alstyne of Nassau, NY. Bob grew up in Nassau, where he enjoyed many outdoor pursuits, such as hunting and fishing. He attended the Nassau Reformed Church for most of his life. In his younger years, he sang in the choir and served on the consistory as a deacon and as an elder. Bob graduated from Columbia High School in 1952 and later went on to graduate from Hudson Valley Technical Institute (now known as HVCC) in 1956. After graduation he went on to pursue a career as a Communications Technician for AT&T, where he met the love of his life, Lucy. The couple married in 1966, and brought two children into the world; Robert and Amy. Bob was a devoted husband and father, and brought his family on many memorable camping trips and excursions. Bob retired from AT&T in 1990 after 35 years of dedicated service. After his retirement, he enjoyed working part time for Country True Value, in North Greenbush. Bob was a member of the Van Rensselaer Lodge No. 87 and the Scottish Rite. Bob enjoyed NASCAR, traveling, music, and had a keen ability to memorize poetry. Bob was predeceased by his parents and sister Janice Van Alstyne. He is survived by his wife; Lucy Van Alstyne, his son; Robert Van Alstyne, his daughter; Amy (John) Cirincione, Bob considered Amy’s husband John to be a second son, and his beloved grandchildren; Christian, Juliet, Daniel, and Maggie Cirincione. He is also survived by his sister; Judith (Ronald) Selkirk, brother-in-law; Charles (Jane) Sirigiano, sisters-in-law; Genevieve Zwick and Nancy (David) Post, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Ramona was predeceased by her husbands; Joseph Flores and Richard Bashaw, her sons; James and Jerry Flores, her grandson; Michael Flores, as well as her siblings; Robert, Carlos, George, and Antonio Abarca, Rosa Cruz, and Carmen Lopez. She is survived by her children; Vincent, Christopher, Louis, and Antonio (Terry) Flores, her stepchildren; Robert (Belinda) and Richard (Leslie) Bashaw, her siblings; Enrique Abarca, John Torres, and Olga (Eli) Barrios. She is also survived by twenty grandchildren, including her caregiver, Natasha Flores, as well as twenty-seven great grandchildren with two more on the way, and two great great grandchildren with two more on the way.

Susan was very athletic, she served as a lifeguard at Lake Waccabuc, in the summers during high school. She was a graduate of Wheaton College (1973) and worked as a lab technician at Albany Stratton VA Medical Center before working as a clinical research assistant for several companies including Parexel and PPD (Product Production Development). She was a deacon at the New Baltimore Reformed Church for many years, served on the board at the Nassau Free Library and was an active member at Honest Weight Food Co-op. Post retirement, her unbounded energy was directed toward working at Albany Institute of History & Art Museum and Berkshire Botanical Garden. Akin to that, she was an avid gardener and enjoyed being outdoors enhancing her yard and home.
Susan will be remembered for her independent spirit, her go to attitude on all projects, her love of contra dancing, kayaking, gardening and pot luck dinners.

She was the eldest daughter of the late Jacob and Rose Kelly Becker. Jane was born in Albany, NY on July 10, 1924 and spent her time happily growing up with her siblings. Jane married the love of her life, Martin E. Rauch on May 10, 1946, and they were devoted to each other for 63 years of marriage before his passing. She is survived by her eight children, Judith (Jack) Schmitz, Carol McNicholas, Gail (Jacob) Coons, Martin E. (Diane) Rauch, Jr., Theresa (Ronald) Caputo, Kurt (Jill) Rauch, Glenn (Paula) Rauch, and Eric (Beverly) Rauch. She is also survived by, and was wonderful to, her cherished and beloved 30 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren (1 on the way), 4 (2 more on the way) great great grandchildren, her sister Rosemary Smead, sister in law Marlene (Rick) Everleth, brother in law Bruce Rauch and many loving cousins, nieces, and nephews. In addition to her spouse and parents Jane was predeceased by her brothers James Becker, Lawrence Becker, Jacob Becker III, and sister Lois Campanella. Jane worked briefly as a teller at Albany Savings Bank until the birth of her first child and then devoted herself to being a homemaker and eventually babysitter extraordinaire for what seemed most of the Village of Nassau for many years, until Martin retired. Jane was a loving person who was deeply devoted to caring for her family and any baby that came her way. Her greatest pride was her family, and nothing filled her with more joy than being surrounded by them. Jane’s faith was an important part of her life, she was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Nassau, since her move to Nassau in 1950. One of Jane's favorite hobbies was crochet and many family members are in receipt of her intricate work. In her later years, as her sight failed, she turned to puzzles which entertained her and any of her visitors. Her family greatly admired that she lived her life with passionate beliefs and strength. She was strong in life, strong in love, strong in faith, and strong till the end.
