Margaret Cullinan Nied - October 03, 1928 - May 02, 2024

Departed: 05/02/2024 (Swissvale)
Obituary Preview: Margaret Cullinan Nied, 95, of Stuart, FL and Ligonier, PA, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 2 in Hobe Sound, FL. She was born on 10-3-1928 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Frank and Irene Cullinan, the 2nd oldest of five children. The Cullinan family lived in Florida, then Chicago, where she attended St. Margaret Mary grammar school and St. Scholastica High School. Mom graduated from St. Mary’s College in Notre Dame, IN, and pursued master’s degrees in social work and chemistry at Loyola University in Chicago. She served the Chicago community as a social worker for Catholic Charities. Mom’s strong faith led her to novitiate formation with the Benedictine Sisters of Chicago. As with Maria Von Trapp, God led mom where he needed her, and it wasn’t as a nun.
The Cullinan Family had deep roots in Pittsburgh, and while visiting her aunts, mom was introduced to Tom Nied. Dad, having left Cornell due to tuberculosis, had returned home to join his father in the Nied Funeral Home. Mom returned to social work in Chicago, so with a ring sewn into his blazer, Dad took a train west several times to convince her to marry him. His diligence paid off, and they were married in St. Ignatius Church in Chicago on November 18, 1954. Throughout their 46-year marriage, they often joked, “I only married you because you told me you couldn’t have kids, “so Mom would retort, “I married you because you said you wouldn’t live past 45.” And they would howl with laughter.
Our parents settled in Edgewood where their married life - based on their mutual understanding that Dad wouldn’t live past 45 and Mom couldn’t have children - began. The Immaculate Conception{s} got rapidly underway with the arrival of Tom, Jr. in 1955, and continued with Mary Ellen, Charlie, Peter, P.J., Jo Ann, Chris, and the caboose, Robin, in 1965. Chaos quickly ensued, with mom wrangling the mob of kids while Dad focused on building the family business. Raising 8 kids required a great deal of faith, patience, and humor as they faced down each day with their enormous responsibilities.
Mom was devoted to her communities. She volunteered at St. Anselm’s grade school, easing the punishment due one of us on any given day. She taught religion at the Western PA School for the Deaf, led the Girl Scout Troop, served on countless committees, and supported numerous social justice causes. Generosity of spirit was truly her hallmark. Friends and cousins were always welcome to stay – Edgewood, Ligonier, or Stone Harbor, NJ – but Mom said it was up to them to find space. Mom and Mrs. Laird cranked out endless casseroles, with macaroni and fish being ‘memorable.’ Endless cooking, errands, and fatigue did not slow her down. A town in Mexico discovered a good gig in Pittsburgh, and several exchange students lived with us over the years, attending Central Catholic with the Nied boys. When the Nied kids raked leaves, cleaned bathrooms, or weeded the garden, the young guests were expected to jump in. No free lunch with mom!
The formidable quartet of Mom, Mary Fallon, Mary McGarvey, and Rose Ann Farrell shared the absurdity of their daily lives managing 27 kids between them, as well as husbands with demanding careers. Throughout our lives, we were treated as family in any of their homes. We cherish the memories of their laughter, acceptance, and love for each other.
Mom’s interests were vast: She was a skier, a demon tennis player who won a tennis championship at 85, sailed through NYT crossword puzzles, kept fit, and was an expert bridge player. Reading was a great passion. She loved teaching underserved children to read. Mom took up roller blading at 70. She was game for road trips, flights to see her family, and travelled overseas on many adventures. She loved exposure to new foods, people, cultures, and scenery.
Her grandchildren filled the Ligonier House with love and fun. She delighted in their chatter and curiosity. The kids cannon-bombed into the pool, took the dogs for canoe rides and napped on the porch with her. Wearing pj’s, Mom, the kids and the dogs took morning nature discovery walks. The kids dove into bins of old prom gowns Mom found for dressing up. A big crowd descended every July 4th to play and feast on Hoffer’s pig roast. The grandkids couldn’t wait for Dad’s, then brother Charlie’s, fireworks extravaganzas. The kids grew up enjoying the annual Ft. Ligonier Days Parade, eagerly anticipating the Shriners and Budweiser Clydesdales. Soft serve at Pee-Wees capped off the busy days. She sure loved her ice cream! They visited her in Florida to romp on the beach and search for manatees.
Mom and Dad bought a place in the Miles Grant Community in Stuart, FL. Their big tennis group morphed beyond daily play into socializing on an impressive scale. Visiting Mom and Dad in Florida required stamina because it was just so dang fun. Mom continued to split her time between Florida and Ligonier after Dad died in 2000, eventually moving to FL full-time in 2018. She kept her friends close and made new ones every season. Mom’s cat napped in the street and demanded attention from passersby. Sunshine, warmth, and being outside allowed her to swim laps, play tennis, and walk. Mom’s neighbors were fabulous, and we thank them for their love and concern.
Mom was surrounded by so many who loved her and her path to join dad and our sister Jo Ann was dignified, pain-free, and peaceful. Fr. Timothy Whelen, her sixth son, and a magnificent human being, flew in to be with her near the end. Special thanks to the amazing staff at The Sheriden Hobe Sound where they took such wonderful care of her.
Maggie is survived by her children Tom Nied, Jr {Michelle}, Mary Ellen Nied Johansen {Mark}, Charles C. Nied {Cynthia}, Peter Nied {Terri}, Paul Nied {Maggie}, Chris Nied, and Robin Nied Taylor {Bill}; Grandchildren Erin Jurado {Michael}, Danny Nied {Andrea}, Katie Nied {Jackson}, Mary Margaret Johansen, Keeley Johansen, Devon Cheathem {Michael}, Alexandra Nied, Paige Nied, Angela Nied, Tori Nied, Carter Washburn, Casey Washburn, Lola Taylor and Liam Taylor; great grandchildren Addy and Tommy Nied, Benton and Myla Jurado, and Atlas Nied; siblings Helen Dahle {Jerry} and Jim Cullinan {Denny}; and many wonderful nieces and nephews; she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Thomas L. Nied and her beloved daughter Jo Ann Nied Washburn {Brooks}; parents Frank and Irene Cullinan; brother Frank Cullinan and sister Mary Schilling. Friends will be received at the Thomas L. Nied Funeral Home, Inc. 7441 Washington Street in Swissvale on Friday May 17th from 1-4pm and 5-8 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, May 18th at 10 a.m. St. Anselm Church 7446 McClure Ave with the Very Rev. Timothy Whelan officiating.  EVERYONE TO PLEASE MEET AT CHURCH!
