Born on December 14, 1928, in Chicago, IL, on Homer Street, Irene was a beacon of love and resilience throughout her life, leaving behind a legacy of warmth and cherished memories.
Irene was the beloved daughter of the late Joseph and Rose Szafranski, and she carried the virtues of her family throughout her life. She grew up alongside her sibling Norbert. Her oldest sisters were deceased Virginia and Clara Szafranski. The family environment shaped her into the remarkable woman she became.
Irene's husband, Felix Rajewski, predeceased her, and together they shared a life full of love and devotion. Her son, Robert Rajewski, was the apple of her eye, and she took immense pride in his accomplishments. Irene's joy multiplied with the birth of her grandchildren, Catherine Mother of: Amanda and Jennifer Rajewski, and later she was blessed with the laughter and wonder of her great-grandchildren, Maximus Rosario, Michael Warren, and Khalessi Blake. Irene's family circle extends into her nephews and nieces Craig, Brian, Deborah and Sharon Szafranski. Her step children Joseph and Camilla Rajewski, and her step Grand children Nick and Rex Rajewski. Her life was enriched by the presence of many cousins, extended family members, and friends who remember her fondly and celebrate the life she lived.
Her early education took place in grammar school in Chicago. After that she worked on the family farm in Braidwood, IL. Irene's work ethic was evident in her contributions to the family's endeavors on Cook Street, Lincoln, and beyond. After marrying the love of her life, Felix, she worked in a glove factory before embracing the role of homemaker upon becoming pregnant with her son.
Irene's interests and passions were a reflection of her joyful spirit and love for life. Her faith was a cornerstone, and she was an active member of St. Mary of the Angels church, where she participated in the Rosary group. Irene's social life was peppered with the excitement of bingo nights with friends like Anna, Josephine, and Shirley. She was also an avid card player, enjoying games of Rummy and Solitary.
The world of entertainment brought great joy to Irene, who was an enthusiastic fan of Elvis Presley's movies and music. She also had a fondness for Patrick Swayze, specifically the film "Dirty Dancing," and she enjoyed other classics like "Kindergarten Cop," "The Parent Trap," "Hard to Kill" with Steven Seagal, and the timeless "The Sound of Music." Irene never missed an episode of "Perry Mason," tuning in to join the famous fictional lawyer in unraveling mysteries.
Irene's life was marked by the strength of her character, her unwavering faith, and the depth of her love for her family and friends. She faced the challenges of dementia and congestive heart failure with the same grace and courage that she demonstrated throughout her life. Her memory will be cherished and kept alive in the stories and laughter shared by those who loved her.
While Irene's physical presence will be missed, her spirit remains a guiding light for her family and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy is one of love, kindness, and the simple joys of life-lessons that will continue to inspire, comfort and live through us all! Graciela Monroy - February 05, 1940 - April 24, 2024

Departed: 04/24/2024 (Chicago)
Obituary Preview: Thoughts about my mom Graciela was the fourth child of Abraham Fernandez and Maria Elvira Fernandez Amaya. She was a small town girl from Anolaima Colombia. A small town 44 miles west of Bogota, Colombia. She lived with her parents and siblings in the house that her father built all by himself.
She grew up, surrounded by an abundance of beautiful colors that were in the flowers that grew all over that region of Columbia. She would often tell us how she was a rambunctious little girl with pigtails, running around with boundless energy who loved to sing and dance. She married Carlos Eduardo Monroy. She had her first child, a boy, Leonardo.
She came to America when she was 28 years old and settled in Chicago. Her green card picture showed her with a beehive hairdo which was popular in those days. She loved doing outdoor things like riding her bike and playing tennis and taking ice-skating lessons. She lived for many years on North Kenneth Avenue in Chicago. First, she rented an apartment with her husband, Ed, in a two flat building that was just constructed in 1969. She had her second child Kerri Ann. She liked looking out the kitchen window of her apartment, at the backyard of the house next-door. She dreamed of having that backyard for her children to play. When the owner of the house passed away in 1973, the house went up for sale. Grace and Ed put a bid on the house. She had worked as a beautician, and she would save a lot of her tip money. She had saved up $10,000 from the money she had earned from tips doing hair. When the house came up for sale, she used the $10,000 as a down payment. She would live in that house for 50 years. In 1980, her marriage to Ed had dissolved and she was suddenly a single mother with two kids to support.
She went back to school to get her GED and she continued doing hair and other sales lady jobs to pay the mortgage on the house and to put food on the table. She sold everything from Mary Kay, vitamins and Rainbow vacuum cleaners. She would do whatever she could to support her kids. She loved working in her garden and picking up the pears in the backyard from the pear tree that had been there when she bought the house. At times she would make canned preserves with those pairs. She planted the pine tree in front of the house many years ago. Uncle Orlando, Ed’s younger brother gave her two pine tree saplings(who passed away almost a month before she did) she planted one in the front yard, which grew taller than the house. She also planted a beautiful cherry blossom tree in the parkway in front of the house. In the spring, that tree blossoms with beautiful white and pink petals. She loved that old house on North Kenneth Avenue and she wanted to live there until she died. She wanted her children to promise to keep the house in the family and to never sell it. She will be buried in the same cemetery her parents and brother are buried, Mary Hill cemetery. In lieu of sending flowers please contribute to either one of these organizations: The Chicago Botanical Gardens https://www.chicagobotanic.org/donate American Cancer Society https://www.cancer.org/donate.html

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he guideth me in the paths
of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil; for thou art with me: thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:
thou hast anointed my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life:
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
