Ronald J. Guariglia - March 16, 1933 - May 10, 2024

Departed: 05/10/2024 (Peoria)
Obituary Preview: Ron Guariglia’s favorite joke was about a St. Louis Cardinals fan who’s visited by the ghost of his dear friend. “Is there something you’d like to know about heaven?” the friend asks. “Yes, there is,” the fan says, “Is there baseball in heaven?” “I have good news and bad news for you,” the ghost says. “The good news is there’s baseball in heaven. The bad news is you’re pitching tomorrow.” Tomorrow came for Ronald James Guariglia on May 10, 2024, as he passed away peacefully at Peoria’s Proctor Place. He was 91. A longtime Peoria resident, Ron was born in St. Louis in 1933 to Charles and Adelaide (Buerk) Guariglia. He came to Peoria in 1951 by way of a Bradley basketball scholarship. That year, The St. Louis Star-Times had named Ron “The Most Valuable High School Basketball Player in the St. Louis District.” Ron starred along with his twin brother, Don, at Normandy High, and on Bradley’s golf team. After graduating from Bradley, Ron served in the U.S. Army at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri, at Ft. Eustis, Virginia, and then at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. Upon leaving the service, he moved to Des Moines, where he met Carolyn Shepard. They married in 1961, and in 1964 the couple moved to Peoria, where Carolyn taught school at Washington Elementary, and Ron worked for International Paper and Murison Label Company. Staunch Bradley sports fans, they were regularly seen at Braves basketball games. Golf, though, was a sport they could share on and off the course. When he wasn’t playing golf, Ron rarely missed a St. Louis Cardinals game on radio or TV. Ron and Carolyn never had children, but they doted on Carolyn’s students, keeping track of them through their education and into their working careers. Ron was a gentle soul, quick with a smile or a joke to share. He was a devoted husband, often at Carolyn’s side in whatever endeavor she sought out. She died in late 2022. The last of his siblings to pass away, Ron is survived by several nieces and nephews. Per his wishes, no memorial service is to be held. His cremated remains will join Carolyn’s at Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria. Contributions in his name may be made to Peoria’s Wildlife Prairie Park.
