She joined the Green Grove Missionary Baptist Church at an early age holding several positions in the church.  She was a Deaconess at Zion Watch Baptist Church where her husband JT Thornton was a Deacon.
She attended the public schools of Stewart County, Georgia. She furthered her education at Albany State College, Albany, GA, receiving a bachelor's degree in education, and continued her studies at Tuskegee Institute, Tuskegee, Alabama.
She taught in Georgia for over 40 years at the Zion Watch Community and Lumpkin Elementary School, retiring after 40 years of service.
She leaves to cherish her memory: A loving Daughter Yvonne T Herring (Eugene Sr.) Hawthorne, FL; one Grandson, Eugene Herring Jr., Charlotte, NC; two Granddaughters: Hattie Lartrelle Herring and Katrina Yvonne Herring, Orlando, FL; two Great-Granddaughters, Jayla Genae Herring Tallahassee, FL and Aniya Jade Barthelemy Orlando, FL; God Son Reginald Strickland (Carmelitta); Brother-in-Law, Willie E. Mr. Jimmy (Jimbo) McCory - June 30, 1947 - August 04, 2021

Obituary Preview: On Wednesday, August 4, 2021, God in His infinite wisdom, called Jimmy McCory from his earthly home to his eternal home. He was a resident at Lexington of Chicago Ridge Nursing Home in Chicago Ridge, Il. Jimmy was born on June 30, 1947 in Lumpkin, GA to the late Mr. Robert McCory, known for his caring spirit and Mrs. Frances Mae McCory, known as the neighborhood disciplinary mom. Jimmy was the third child of six siblings. One brother, Robert McCory, Jr., preceded him in death at the young age of twelve.
As a young boy full of life and a laughable sense of humor, Jimmy, known to others as Jimbo, grew up to become a beacon of strength and love for his family. He attended Stewart County School System. Jimmy moved to Chicago, Il where he acquired many skills, but cooking was his passion. He could make something out of nothing. He was a skillful chief cook at Sears Towers in Chicago, Il for years. After living in Chicago for a few years, Jimmy confessed Christ as his personal Savior and joined Metropolitan Community Church.
Jimmy loved his family dearly and that love was reciprocated and certainly exemplified through his wife, children, grandchildren, sisters and brothers. He leaves to cherish his memory: a devoted wife, Mary Strozier; four loving children: Yolanda Strozier, Felicia Strozier, Terrell Wilkerson and Terry Floyd. Ten grandchildren: Chantel Strozier, Da'Monte Williams, Chekiya Wilkerson, Jamal Wilkerson, Ronald Pollard, Tequita Cradic, Lequita Cradic, Terry Cradic, Terry Floyd, Jr., and Terry Floyd III; six siblings: Christine Moses, Margaret Nell Shingles, Benjamin (Mamie) McCory, Billie Ann Mallory, Jeanie Richardson and James Harris; one uncle and three aunts: John Horne, Jr., Roxie Mae Bradwell, Clara Bess and Ella Johnson and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives along with many others who loved him.
Mr. Jimmy (Jimbo) McCory will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
