Obituary Preview: Joshua Devin Combs passed away unexpectedly May 14th of 2024 at the young age of 33.
Josh is survived by his parents; Devin and Deborah Combs, sister; Jaclyn Combs, grandparents; Gary and Sandra Combs and Mike and Linda Cantwell, Aunts and Uncles; Daren and Christina Combs and James and Christine Cantwell, his nieces and nephew; Aubrey and Allison Wilcoxen and Jaxson Krebbs, and his cousins; Logan and Garrett Combs and Raegan Cantwell.
He is preceded by his great grandmother and grandfather Paul and Pearl Rollins and cousin Evan Cantwell.
Josh was born September 21st of 1990 in Bloomington Indiana. He graduated from Bloomington High School South in 2009. From a young age Josh had a love for football to the extent of going nowhere without his football, this love turned into a passion for him as he played the game from youth through high school.
While in high school he found a new joy in powerlifting. With the help of the powerlifting community he was able to push himself to great achievements. With these achievements he was able to break multiple power lifting records.
Following high school Josh joined the work force as a CDL driver where he made many friends and a name for himself following in his father and grandfathers footsteps.
Josh’s smile never failed to put a smile on other people’s faces, but how could you not smile after seeing those dimples! He wasn’t known as a vocalist but that never stopped him from singing along to a song even if that was through his CB. He was quite terrified of the dark but always managed to stay up late enough to build a fire, however, if he saw a spider he was the first one to go back into the house.
Visitation for Josh will be on Wednesday, May 22, 2024 from 2-8 pm at Stanford Baptist Church, 8918 W. Hinds Road Stanford, IN. There will also be visitation on Thursday May 23, 2024 from 11 am until the service begins at 1 pm at the church.
Josh’s absence in this life fills us with loss, regret and gratitude and most importantly reminds us to love one another. In true Josh fashion “come in driver, driver come in.”

Mary Eileen Rice - January 16, 1943 - April 12, 2024

Departed: 04/12/2024 (Bloomington)
Obituary Preview: Mary Eileen Rice (Logsdon) of Bloomington, IN and known to most as Eileen, passed away at Richland Bean Blossom Health Care Center on Friday April 12th at the age of 81. She was born January 16th, 1943 in Chicago, IL while her father John was serving in WWII in the South Pacific. Her mother Marie Lucille spent the next two years raising Eileen before she got to meet her father. After the allies returned home, the family eventually moved to Melrose Park and then Elmwood Park, IL as the family grew- first Margaret, then Katherine, and last John (Jr). The Logsdon household became a busy home. Eileen went to St Celestine’s Elementary and Notre Dame High School and graduated in 1961. After that Eileen tried her hand at several jobs available to women at the time including a shop girl and secretary, then married Bill VanVlack and lived in Miller Beach, IN and Chicago, IL. However, she did not find any happiness in this marriage and they divorced after a few years.
At that point Eileen had chosen to focus instead on the study and process of creating art and enrolled at the School of The Art Institute of Chicago, and graduated with a BFA. She was awarded a grant through the Illinois Art Council to study at Ox-Bow School of Art and Residency in Michigan for a summer, and was hired on to teach there for a few summers following this as well. These experiences had a profound impact on her sense of identity as an artist, but Eileen never settled on a preferred medium or produced any more than the occasional piece of art, typically in response to an assignment for a class, when she would take one. She had tremendous, undeniable talent in everything that she put her hand to, but lacked the voice, confidence, or fire to fuel a career in the world of art.
In 1976 Eileen moved to Cleveland Heights, OH and met her one true partner in life, Mitch Rice. He was a street musician, and together they developed their own brand of American music, leaning heavily towards public domain and folk. They got married in 1978 in Cleveland, and shortly after tragically lost their first baby a few weeks after he was born, a beautiful boy named Angus. This immeasurable heartbreak brought on a paralysis of grief, anger, and distrust towards western medicine that persisted for the rest of her life. By 1979 Eileen was pregnant again. The couple moved to Coconut Grove, FL where Eileen was a baker in a small macrobiotic restaurant. In November, a healthy baby girl named Emma was caught by Ina May Gaskin on The Farm in Summertown, TN. Eileen was a strong proponent of homebirth after her experience at The Farm, a small intentional community that created a space for training midwives, communal living, non-violence, and respect for Mother Earth.
The new triad moved on initially to Nashville and then Bloomington, IN by 1980 to live in the Allen Building where Eileen opened her long lived and beloved store, called Jasmine Vintage Clothing. For many, Eileen and Jasmine Vintage Clothing became synonymous, and she answered to the name Jasmine all over town. The store specialized in Eileen’s favorite eras, the 40s and 50s, which she associated with her childhood. Eileen enjoyed many friendships with the artists and musicians who lived in the Allen building, along with other businesses like the Bellevue Gallery, By Hand Gallery, Ryder Magazine, and WQAX. Jasmine Vintage Clothing closed in 1993 with the sale of the Allen Building to real estate developers.
Eileen and Mitch moved the family into a small saltbox house on Harmony Rd in 1983, where they welcomed a healthy son named Tim in a home birth attended by Ann Prochilo and Mary Edson. Eileen enjoyed the robust art community of Bloomington and spent many Friday evenings visiting the various galleries of Bloomington to admire and critique the latest art. Eileen also continued to play music with Mitch who played guitar, banjo, and baritone ukelele. Eileen was the percussionist and entertainment both, delighting children with the limberjack, a little dancing man on a bouncing plank and then later, a chicken, a dog, a bear- one to match every song that they had. They were weekly regulars at the Community Farmers Market, and many an appreciative farmer would tip a head of lettuce in lieu of silver coins. Eileen always endeavored to break down the barriers between performer and audience, eschewing a traditional stage, instead providing the youngest in the crowd with homemade shakers and encouraging them to join in and dance.
In 1990, Eileen started volunteering as a docent at the IU (Eskenazi) Museum of Art where she spent many hours teaching young and old alike about the collections housed there. She loved the friends and memories she made volunteering there, taking trips to nearby cities to see traveling collections. Eileen spent a significant amount of time in art museums, and in any city she visited she could be found dragging her family along to discover what jewels could be found inside.
In the last 5 years of her life Eileen struggled with delusions related to Lewy Body Dementia, and as her body deteriorated due to Parkinson’s, she didn’t always seem like herself. Her family is very thankful for the loving care she received at Richland Bean Blossom Health Care Center. A private celebration of life is planned. Friends are requested to contact the family so we can have a genuine and loving exchange of memories in lieu of a memorial service. She will be missed.

Richard Ray Duke - August 26, 1951 - March 29, 2024

Departed: 03/29/2024 (Bloomington)
Obituary Preview: Richard Ray Duke, age 72, of Bloomington, Indiana passed away at his residence on Friday March 29, 2024. He was born on August 26, 1951 in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late Harry and Francis Duke.
Richard is survived by his wife of 51 years, Janice Duke; sons, Ricky Duke (Stacy) and Shaun Duke; five grandchildren, Kage, Leah, Autumn, Logan, and Lawson; two sisters, Karen French (John) and Judy Foster; and one brother, Charles (Charly) Duke.
Richard was a very private person with his personal life. When he learned how truly ill he was, he wanted only his immediate family to be with him for the end of his life. He wanted the rest of his family and friends to remember him the way he was before his sickness.
He could be stubborn and strong-willed, as any macho man is, and was also generous and giving-even to strangers.
Richard was a talented welder, and spent most of his adult life welding anything and everything. Following Richard’s retirement from Reilly Industries in Indianapolis, he and his wife started their own business from scratch in Bloomington, Indiana. There, he continued his welding for his community, family, friends and neighbors. He served our country in the Marine Corps and was stationed overseas in Vietnam and Japan as a bulk fuel man. He worked hard and played hard. He had hundreds of jokes and loved to share them with everyone- from his friends and family to the cashiers at the grocery store.
He enjoyed hosting holiday gatherings and keep family traditions alive. He loved fishing on Lake Monroe in his Jon Boat, which he modified to be able to go without needing help. He called it his “escape pod.”He loved the outdoors, and when his family was younger, they traveled a lot in their mini RV to camp and fish.
His very favorite thing to do was to go to yard sales and estate sales to search for that big ‘score’. Sometimes, he made a lot of money, but most times just collected. He would often times meet up with his son, Ricky, and they would put their minds together to get a game plan to attend more sales to score even bigger on their findings.
Above all else, Richard loved his family. He was crazy about his grandchildren, and couldn’t wait for their visits, as he always had a surprise waiting for them. He will be greatly missed and in our hearts forever.
A memorial visitation will take place on Friday, April 12, 2024 from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, 3000 E. Third St. Bloomington.

Norma Elaine Schenck - Unknown - March 24, 2024

Departed: 03/24/2024 (Bloomington)
Obituary Preview: Norma Elaine Schenck, 97, passed peacefully Sunday, March 24 in The Woodlands, Texas. She was the only child of Dale and Etta and grew up in South Bend, IN. Elaine was a graduate of John Adams High School and Indiana University, Bloomington where she majored in business. She also earned a master’s in education from Indiana University and a vocational director certificate from Indiana State University. Elaine taught business education before becoming coordinator of business education and later director of vocational education for the South Bend Community School Corporation until her retirement in 1986.
In 1951, she married Arthur H. Schenck who preceded her in death August 28, 2015.Together they had a daughter, Lynn, of Bloomington, IN and a son, Ken(Merlin) of Conroe, Texas who survive her. She is also survived by her grandson, Skyler of Conroe, a brother-in-law, Alvin of Indianapolis, IN and six nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and her cousin, Jim, who was like a brother.
A child of the depression, Elaine was a remarkable woman. She was a loving wife and mother, a lifelong learner, and consummate educator. She had an infectious smile, enjoyed being with others, appreciated music, was a skilled bridge player and had a vast knowledge of antique silver. In high school she played saxophone with an all-girls orchestra performing for weddings and dances. After two years at IU, she took a year off to work for the Veterans Administration in Washington D.C. before returning to IU to finish her degree. She began her master’s degree at the University of Colorado in Boulder and developed a lifelong love of the State. She was an active church member and leader of many civic and professional organizations for which her contributions were frequently recognized. And she still found time to take her children to museums, support their many activities, and later visit them wherever they resided.
At age 60, she and Art retired to Syracuse Lake, a place made special by her childhood visits and because it was where her parents retired. She became president of the Syracuse Lake association, president of the town park board, actively served Calvary United Methodist Church, and began selling antique silver. After 22 years, Art and Elaine made the difficult decision to leave their beloved lake home to move to Bloomington to be closer to Lynn and health care. Elaine quickly made new friends, found a loving new church in First Presbyterian, joined bridge groups, attended concerts, theater performances, and continued to sell antique silver. She was affectionately known by many as the Silver Lady.
She treasured visiting Skyler in Texas and moved there with Lynn following the death of her beloved husband of 64 years. She attended many of Skyler’s activities, went with him to the annual Texas A&M physics fair, three Texas presidential libraries, the Johnson Space Center, Kennedy Space Center, and Wings on the Rockies before her health prevented her from doing so. In March 2022 she moved to The Heritage of the Woodlands Memory Care where she remained kind and appreciative until her passing. Her family would like to thank the many caregivers of Devotion Hospice and The Heritage for keeping her comfortable.
A celebration of life will take place on Tuesday, May 28 at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Bloomington, IN with a reception to follow. Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Bloomington, IN or the Indiana University Foundation: Kelley Shareholders Fund or the Education Opportunity Fund.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary or provide guidance on how to write one.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, cause of death (optional), occupation, hobbies, achievements, surviving family members, and funeral or memorial service details.

How long should an obituary be?

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or multiple photos with the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the tribute and help others remember the person.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Where can I publish an obituary?
