Carmelo Ragusa - Unknown - May 15, 2024

Departed: 05/15/2024 (Manhasset)
Obituary Preview: Carmelo Ragusa was born on February 24Th 1935 to Italian immigrant parents Antoino and Calogera Ragusa. Carl as he was known by his friends and family passed away on May 15,2024 at age 89. He leaves behind his beloved and dedicated wife Maria of 62 years. His family was always his top priority and legacy. Carl grew up in Queens, New York and did not want his sons to have the same stigmatism that bothered him as a child. Naming his two sons Paul and Luke, was his way of giving them a fresh start to achieve more than he did. Carl also leaves behind three grandchildren, Michelina, Antonio and Fancesca. His sons honored and embraced their family heritage by naming their children with traditional Italian names in the face of the stigmatic views that Carmelo encountered as a child. Carl was drafted during college to serve in the US Army from 1957-1963. Upon returning to civilian life, Carl was back on course at school and received his Masters in Engineering degree from NYU. While finishing up his masters degree he met his wife Maria. A few years later he got his first big opportunity working for Grumman, allowing him to buy his first and only home in Great Neck. With the passing of his older sister Rose, he stayed true to his family values and took in his two nieces Linda and Nina. Carl then raised his own family in the same house in Great Neck where lived out the remainder of his life. Carl had a passion for travel and saw the world with his new bride. He sailed on the Queen Mary, visited Europe, Asia, Russia and countless other places. His summer vacations were always with his family. They consisted mainly of road trips covering as many states as he could in his limited time off from work. As a history buff, many of the trips revolved around historical sights from the revolutionary and civil war where he would take the time to pass on his vast knowledge to his kids whether they were interested or not. Carl had a voracious appetite for books and would chew through history books by the dozen. Carl loved music and the opera. When asked what music he liked he would talk about how great Elvis was but there was little to no evidence to support this claim. A rock record was never to be discovered in his collection. Instead his musical selection consisted of classical, opera, Frank Sinatra and yes Barbra Strisand. He always rooted for the New York Yankees and attended games with his sons.If you ask Paul and Luke it was not as often as they wanted. Instead Carl took his family to museums, parks and the zoo to pass on his love of the arts, history and culture.

Peter Dejana - Unknown - May 02, 2024

Departed: 05/02/2024 (Manhasset)
Obituary Preview: Peter Dejana was born in Pattada, Sardinia, Italy on March 23, 1940. He was the first of five children born to John and Antonina Dejana. Peter emigrated to America with his father at age 16, not speaking a word of English. He attended and graduated from Schreiber High School, all the while working as many hours as he could to help support his family. Father and son first lived with relatives in Port Washington and, through hard work and thrifty ways, were able to bring the rest of their family to America. They set down roots in sand miner’s housing on West Shore Road.
Peter started out in the landscaping field, a typical entry-point into the American dream for numerous Italian immigrants. Beginning on Shore Road with a single truck and one Jeep with a plow, over a half-century, he built the successful, multi-faceted contracting business that became known as Dejana Industries.
At its height, the Dejana family of companies was the largest municipal services contractor in North America, employing over 600 people, with offices in Port Washington, New York, Chicago, Boston, Denver, and Newark, NJ.
At the time of his passing, Peter was President and CEO of Dejana Holdings, LLC, a real estate investment firm, and President and CEO of the Peter & Jeri Dejana Foundation, a Port Washington-based philanthropy he established in 2010.
Peter was defined by his brilliant and incisive mind (never having attended college), his unmatched work ethic and energy, and his extraordinary self-discipline.
Peter was a friend to all who offered their friendship. He interacted easily with people from all walks and stations of life. He found great satisfaction in getting to know people and learning about their lives and life stories. He was modest, wise, humble, and unassuming in all his dealings with people.
Peter often called himself a “car guy”. He raced cars of all types from his youth until well into adulthood, always with a passion for speed and performance. He was endlessly fascinated by how cars, motorcycles, trucks, and machines worked and were put together. He enjoyed nothing more than designing, fabricating, fixing, repairing, and generally tinkering with machinery of all kinds – an abiding interest that served him well in business and added greatly to the success of Dejana Industries. He truly had the mind of a brilliant engineer, which he most certainly would have become had he not chosen the path of building a successful business.
Peter loved Port Washington. He came here from Italy, stayed, and remained part of the community for almost 70 years. His far-flung business enterprises were based here. Both personally and through his Foundation, he was proud to support numerous local organizations, charities, and events. He found his life partner here, as well as his most trusted friends. Throughout his amazing and successful journey, Port Washington was his home base, his anchor, and his reference point in life.
Peter is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Geraldine (“Jeri”) Dejana and his adored son, Tyler Schweber Dejana. He is also survived by his sisters, Giovanna (“Giannina”) Bruce and Antoinette Lewis, and his brother Vincent Dejana. Peter was a caring and attentive uncle to numerous nieces and nephews, and was devoted to many other much-cherished family members and friends.
Peter was predeceased by his much-loved son, Dean, and his adored brother, Philip.
Peter’s love for and dedication to family, friends, hard work, and charitable endeavors have set an example for the countless people whose lives he touched. He will be well remembered and much missed. Visitation: Sunday 05/05/2024 4:00pm to 7:00pm Funeral Mass: Monday 05/06/2024 11:00am St Peter of Alcantara Church

Edward T. Wood - Unknown - April 17, 2024

Departed: 04/17/2024 (Manhasset)
Obituary Preview: Wood, Dr. Edward T., age 92, died peacefully on April 17, 2024. Dr. Wood was an adoring husband to his wife, Mary Jane of 52 years who predeceased him in 2014, as well as a loving father to Eddie and his late son, Rodney. Dr. Wood was extremely accomplished, starting with his upbringing in Lexington, Virginia having been raised in a loving and supportive family with his older brothers, Harry, Clarence and Alex and sisters, Betty Jo and Marie and parents, Harry and Nannie, all of whom predeceased him and whose bloodline, via slavery, traced back to General Robert E. Lee's brother, Harry "Darkhorse" Lee (whose own ancestry traced back to Harry "Lighthorse" Lee who fought under George Washington in the Revolutionary War).
After having attended Dartmouth as a pre-medical student, where he graduated in 1953, Dr. Wood then applied and was accepted into the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He along with his fellow classmate, Edward Nash, became the first two Black students to attend there, graduating in the Class of 1957. A press release from that time is quoted: “According to this week’s press reports, the Medical School of the University of Virginia has accepted two Negro students for enrollment next fall. The students are Edward B. Nash of Richmond and Edward T. Wood of Lexington. Both are “A” students and graduated from Richmond’s Armstrong High School in June 1949. At present, Nash is attending the Virginia Union University while Wood is a pre-medical student at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. Although the doors of the University of Virginia have been open to qualified Negro students since a three-judge Federal Court compelled it to admit Gregory Swanson to graduate studies at its law school in 1950, Nash and Wood are the first Negroes ever accepted for enrollment in the medical school. Commenting on the acceptance of these two young men, Byron F. Black, rector of the University, said the matter could be regarded as ‘routine.’” A scholarship for underrepresented students at the school now bears their names.
Given the groundbreaking nature of his academic accomplishments, Dr. Wood received acclamations from President Dwight D. Eisenhower and later, President John F. Kennedy. After medical school, Dr. Wood completed several internships and residencies in New York, eventually choosing ophthalmology as his specialty. Later on, Dr. Wood would proudly serve the country with distinction as a Lieutenant in the Navy during the Vietnam War, treating countless soldiers for eye injuries sustained in battle.
In addition to establishing his own practice, Dr. Wood went on to both Hempstead General Hospital and Jamaica Hospital serving the community by performing eye surgery on thousands of patients during his career to help restore their eyesight, many on a pro bono basis. Having been blessed with a keen intellect, he was also able to learn from other masters in his field, including his good friend, Dr. Charlie Kelman, the "Father of Phacoemulsification," which created today's modern-day cataract surgery employing ultrasound energy, enabling Dr. Wood to help further pioneer and teach other ophthalmologists in this newly invented, groundbreaking technique as well.
Dr. Wood had a long and productive career, working for 60 years until the age of 85, and then residing in Florida up until his death.
In addition to his distinguished medical career, Dr. Wood and his late wife, Mary Jane, whom he adored, were quite active on the New York social scene and were noted golfers and tennis partners on Long Island as members of Mill River Country Club as well Farm Neck Golf Club on Martha’s Vineyard and Weston Hills Country Club in Weston, Florida.
Besides his beloved son, Eddie, Dr. Wood leaves behind his loving nephews and nieces, including Harry, Brian, Fred, Valerie, Cindy and Wanda in addition to his many grandnephews and grandnieces as well as his caretakers and friends, April and Ron, along with many other close family friends including John and Chandra.
Although it's sad to say goodbye, his endless grace and love will remain with us always.
A memorial will be held on May 25, 2024 at 11 AM at the Evergreen Cemetery in Lexington, Virginia.
