Mary Ellen Aker - August 09, 1918 - August 26, 2021

Departed: 08/26/2021 (Downingtown)
Obituary Preview: Mary Ellen (Donaldson) Aker, 103 left family and friends on August 26, 2021.  Born in Coaldale, PA, Mary was the second oldest child of the late David E. and Nellie Donaldson.  Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, J. Arthur Aker and her siblings Herchel, James, and Thomas.
Mary was born on a farm in Western Pennsylvania, and was taught the meaning of a hard day’s work at a very early age.  After graduating from High School, Mary wanted to pursue her dream to be a nurse.  It was challenging for her parents to agree, but she did leave home, go to the big city of Philadelphia and became a member of the 1940 nursing class at Methodist Hospital.  It was during this time that she met the love of her life Art.  In spite of being in the throes of WWll, Art and Mary were married in September of 1941, and remained forever in love until Art passed in 2000.  They lived in Philadelphia, and then Leedom Estates, PA until 1951 when they moved to Prospect Park, PA and spent the next 20 some years raising their three children. After retirement, Art and Mary moved back to Mary’s home of Everett, PA to again enjoy the beautiful countryside that she so loved.
Mary’s love for Art was rivaled only by the love she had for her family.  Mary is survived by her dear sister Babe (Eliza Muller) and her beloved children:  John A. Aker III (Suzanne), Barbara Kurtz (Marc), and her grandchildren, Jason Aker, Shannon Guyer, Jacque Mendenhall, Marc Kurtz Jr., Kristen Kurtz and 7 great grandchildren.
Mary taught her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren how to love unconditionally, to do the right thing and to be their own persons. She also taught them all the beauty of nature and an appreciation of how the simple things in life are much more important than all of the material things combined.
Mary worked at Taylor Hospital in the Maternity Unit where she insisted that preemie babies did indeed have a chance of survival.  This was before NICU’s and she insisted that with feeding them with an eyedropper, keeping them warm and providing human love and touch, they could live.  There were several babies that owed their lives to Mary. Mary was deeply religious, civic minded, and participated in Girl Scout activities well beyond her daughter’s membership in the organization.  Mary was President of the Prospect Park Women’s Club and an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Norwood, and later at Zion Lutheran Church in Everett, PA.  In her retirement years she enjoyed painting, drawing, needlework, and jigsaw puzzles and coloring. She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Coatesville, PA,
Mary lived her life “her” way.  She was always the “boss” and let everyone know how things were to happen, and when.  Mary left us on August 26, 2021 peacefully, without pain and when she was ready.  Mary will be missed, never forgotten, always loved and forever present in spirit. RESCHEDULED
Relatives and friends are invited to her Visitation Friday, September 3, 2021 at 10:30 AM at The Donohue Funeral Home, 1627 West Chester Pike, West Chester, PA 19382, 610-431-9000, followed by her Funeral Service at 11:00 AM. Interment Edgewood Memorial Gardens.

Bridge (Lisa), along with 15 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
Larry joined General Electric Company and, with his loving wife and growing family, moved to many different places in the United States during his life as his career blossomed.  Most of his six children were born in different areas of the country.  He learned how to fly a plane in Alaska and worked on early renditions of computer systems with Honeywell.  In his quest for knowledge, Larry went back to college and graduated with a B.S. in 1983. His experiences early in his life guided Larry to be a saver.  At 58, he retired from his formal career but not from life.  He embraced the second half of his life, fulfilling it with grandchildren, as a starter at Downingtown CC and many trips to watch his youngest son play sports.  Larry loved being involved in his community.  He umpired in local baseball leagues, MC’d local parades and festivals, was extraordinary minister in SS. Simon and Jude Parish, and entered local politics in retirement.  He was a self-less and generous person, giving of his time and talents as a volunteer in his community and church.    Larry and Flossie eventually retired to Bluffton, SC where Larry enjoyed playing golf and cards and, as always, tinkering in his garage.  Larry loved being called Pop Pop and embraced his role as the mischievous grandfather.  Larry and Flossie surrounded themselves with their family at the holidays including Easter egg hunts, summer picnics, and grandchildren-only New Year's Eve slumber parties.
Larry will be remembered as a kind and loving person, with an unwavering faith in Jesus Christ.  He never missed a Sunday mass and would often attend church during the week as well.  His strong faith led him to lead a long, holy and fruitful life.  No matter where he went, he made an impact on the people he encountered.  Larry will be greatly missed by many.
Relatives and friends are invited to his Viewing 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM Saturday, July 17, 2021 at St. Peters Catholic Church, 2835 Manor Rd, Coatesville, PA 19320, followed by his Funeral Mass at 11:30 AM. Interment at All Souls Cemetery.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing important information to friends, family, and community members. They can also serve as a historical record of a person's life and legacy.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, an obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased, although it may also be written by a funeral home or newspaper staff member. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral services, memorial contributions, and other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the individual's life story. Typically, an obituary ranges from 100 to 500 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the tribute and help readers connect with the deceased.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Most newspapers have a specific process for submitting obituaries. You can usually find this information on their website or by contacting their obituary department directly. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for the publication.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it is becoming increasingly common for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life story is told in the way you want it to be remembered.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Can I make corrections to an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, corrections can be made to an obituary after it's been published. However, this may depend on the publication's policies and deadlines.

What if I want to keep the funeral private?

If you prefer to keep the funeral private, you can still publish an obituary without including details about the service. Instead, you might include information about memorial contributions or other ways for friends and family to pay their respects.

Can I include charitable donations in an obituary?

Yes, many people choose to include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers in their loved one's memory. This can be a meaningful way to continue their legacy.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive issues or controversies surrounding the deceased person's life or death, it's best to approach these topics with tact and discretion. Consider consulting with family members or friends before publishing the obituary.

Can I write an obituary for someone who died under difficult circumstances?

Yes, it's possible to write a compassionate and respectful obituary even in difficult circumstances such as suicide or addiction-related deaths. Focus on celebrating the person's life and legacy rather than dwelling on the circumstances of their passing.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary?

If you're finding it difficult to write an obituary due to grief or emotional distress, consider enlisting the help of a friend or family member. Many funeral homes also offer assistance with writing obituaries as part of their services.
