Obituary Preview: Edith Finton Rieber, a longtime resident of Berwyn, PA passed away at Broomall Manor on July 22, 2019.Edith was a pianist, teacher, lecturer, and founder and president of the Scriabin Society of America. She began her piano studies with her father, Louis Finton, who was a Gold Medal winner from the Vienna Conservatory and Assistant to the famous pedagogue Theodore Leschetizky in Vienna as well as friends with famed pianists Ignaz Friedman, Benno Moiseiwitsch, Harold Bauer and Artur Rubinstein. She continued her training with New York pianists Betah Reeder, Edwine Behre and Adele Marcus of the Juilliard School and also had the distinction of studying in Moscow with Boris Moiseiwitch Berlin of the prestigious Institute Gnessin (now the Russian Academy of Music).Ms. Rieber began a lifelong interest and dedication to the music and culture of Russia in 1958, when she was fortunate to have participated with her husband Prof. Alfred Rieber, professor of Russian history at the University of Pennsylvania, in the first cultural exchange between the USSR and the USA. She spent over three years in Moscow studying with Professor Berlin and sharing the Master Classes of Professor Neuhaus at the Moscow Conservatory, as well as becoming friends with many prominent Russian musicians during this time, including Vladamir Ashkenazy, Victor Stolin, Vladimir Tropp and Sviatoslav Richter.Her passion for Alexander Scriabin’s music and ideas began when she was introduced to his works by Professor Berlin, and was enhanced by countless visits to the Scriabin museum in Moscow where she was able to study tapes by the composer as well as attend concerts by the legendary pianist Sofronitzky.Upon her return from Moscow, she choreographed a multi-media show devoted to Scriabin’s piano music, which was hailed by critics. She performed in New York at Merkin Concert Hall, and in 1991, she performed a program for two pianos in Moscow at the Gnessin Institute with her colleague, the well-known Russian pianist Irina Zakharova.An active teacher and lecturer, as well as a pioneer in bringing the music and ideas of Scriabin to American audiences, she regularly conducted workshops on college campuses and maintained studios in Philadelphia and New York City where she taught private students.In 1995 she helped found the Scriabin Society of America and became its president, arranging Gala Concerts at Steinway Hall in New York City, where pianists from all over the world came to perform only the music of Alexander Scriabin. She was part of the prestigious piano jury at the Second International Scriabin Piano Competition in Moscow in June 2000 and was one of the jurors at the Hilton Head International Piano Competition in March 2003. Ms. Rieber’s efforts in championing the music of Scriabin were recognized by the Russian Ambassador to the U.S. Yuri Ushakov and Mrs. Ushakov when they hosted a gala at their Washington, D.C. official Residence celebrating the 130th Anniversary of the birth of Alexander Scriabin in April 2002 and paid tribute to Ms. Rieber as president of the Scriabin Society of America.

He was a member of the West Chester lacrosses league, GCVA travel association, a member of the SSJ CYO soccer and basketball league as well as playing on the JV soccer and JV and varsity lacrosse at West Chester East High School. At Temple University Sam played inter mural softball and basketball.He loved both saltwater and fresh water fishing and was an avid golfer. Sam spent many summers at his grandparent’s shore house in Stone Harbor, NJ fishing and body surfing. He loved spending time with canine buddy, Buster, and took him on many hikes at Strasburg land preserve, the beach and Temple. He was the beloved husband of the late Joan (nee Reilly) Alexis; loving father of Michael J. Alexis (Jill); adoring grandpa of Alison, Elizabeth and Evelyn Alexis; and dear brother of Robert Alexis. He was predeceased by his brother, William Alexis.After graduating from Jenkins Township High School in 1945, Joseph served honorably in the U.S. Army during WWII in the forces occupying Germany. He graduated from Kings College in Wilkes-Barre, PA, and subsequently worked for the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and as an auditor for the Internal Revenue Service.He married Joan Alexis on August 20, 1966. Later in life, he tirelessly cared for Joan as she was afflicted by Alzheimer’s disease. In 2017, he moved to West Chester to live with his son Michael and family, greatly enriching the lives of his son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren. Joseph enjoyed fishing at Lake Wallenpaupack, and spending time with his family and grandchildren. He fought with the 5th Marine Division on Iwo Jima in February 1945, and was on Iwo Jima when the flag was raised on Mount Suribachi on February 23rd, 1945. He was a member of the Marine Corps league in Delaware County, PA and said he would always remember his fallen brothers.He was an avid golfer and was a member of Cobbs Creek Golf Club. He golfed almost daily after he retired in 1983 until late in May 2019. He was also a longtime member of Ss. Holidays and special occasions were always cause for festivities, with Halloween and the Marine Corps birthday being particular favorites of Maguire’s. Indeed, John could always be counted on to memorialize St. Patrick’s Day in some spectacular fashion. In 1993, he wed Peggi Angell in an “emergency” ceremony on 9/11. Jim and Barbara recently celebrated 60 years of marriage.He joined the General Electric Company in 1957 where he progressed to General Manager of the Installation and Service Engineering Department. Jim joined the Long Island Lighting Company in 1986 as the Vice President of the Utility’s Fossil Production Unit. He held several other positions at LILCO before being named President and Chief Operating Officer in 1996.Along with his wife Barbara, he is survived by his four children, Kevin E. Flynn (Coleen) of West Chester, PA,Craig T. Flynn of Hartland, MI, Shawn P. Flynn of Enfield, CT and Kara Flynn Wilson (Bob) of King of Prussia, PA and his seven grandchildren, Maggie, Cate, Scott, Molly, Craig, Bridget and Claire.Jim enjoyed, sailing on the Long Island Sound on his Pearson 303 the Anniversary, Golfing, fishing off his Pro-line The Miss Katy, reading books, watching football games, going out to dinner with family and friends, traveling with Barbara, spending summers in Sea Isle City and winters in the Florida Keys.He was a proud husband, father and Grampy, who liked nothing more than to be with his children and grandchildren.
