Obituary Preview: EMMA LOU ELLIS, 87, of Harmony, passed away on January 25, 2021 at Miletree Center following a long battle (14+ years) with Alzheimer’s. Em was born May 27, 1933 to the late Joseph Blackwell and Macie Harper Ellis.
Em retired from G.C. Murphy at Parkersburg where she lived for many years. She was a member of Trinity Methodist Church at Parkersburg and was a regular attendee at Harmony Baptist Church after she moved back to Harmony. Em loved crocheting, going for rides, doing word search books, and visiting with family.
Em is survived by one sister, Berdele (Ramah) Tolley and numerous nephews and nieces and great-nephews and nieces. She was mom, grandma and aunt to all of them and greatly loved.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Elbert, Wilbur, Jimmy, Edgar, and Charles and sisters, Juanita Lucas Hill and Violet Ellis.

Obituary Preview: Oren James Tallman, Sr. 94, of Leroy, WV., passed away January 25, 2021 at Roane General Hospital, Spencer, WV. after an extended illness.
He was born September 25, 1926, in Leroy, WV, a son of Asa Delbert and Natalie Tallman. He spent his adult life working in auto parts and service for NAPA, Parrish Motors, and Denbigh-Garrett for 45 years until his retirement in 1992. He enjoyed being with family and working on his farm. He loved sharing his stories of his younger days with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He was a talented mechanic and passed his gift on to other members of the family. He especially enjoyed “touring” with his grandson, Seth. He was a member of the Liverpool United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Lenore Tallman, and brothers, Robert Tallman, Howard Tallman, Delbert Tallman, and Homer Tallman. Also, grandson, Tim Boothe, great grandson, Garrett Simmers, and son-in-law, Roger Cox.
He is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and David Boothe of Reedy, WV, Janet and Steve Walker of Kingsport, TN, Judith Cox of Parkersburg, WV, and Doris and Ronnie Terrell of Reedy; a son and daughter-in-law James II and Carla Tallman of Leroy, WV; nine grandchildren, and twelve great grandchildren.

Obituary Preview: Linda K. Wilson, 66, of Ripley WV (formerly of Looneyville WV) passed away Sunday January 24th 2021 at Hubbard Hospice West following an extended illness.
Linda was born June 8th, 1954 in Left Hand, WV to the late Rev. Roy H. Hoff and Eupha M. Hoff. She was a graduate of Spencer High School.
Linda was a member of the Newton Baptist Church and enjoyed spending her time crafting and sewing. She was also the proud grandmother of two boys that she thought the world of.
Linda is survived by her son Jason Wilson and his wife Alisha of Ripley and those two amazing grandsons Caleb and Grady. She is also survived by her brother Robert Hoff (Donna) of Belleville, and sister Betty Naylor (Woodrow) of Left Hand as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
There will be a short visitation and service at the graveside Wednesday January 27th at 2:30 at the Clover Cemetery with Rev. Bob Keen officiating.

Obituary Preview: FRANCES M. LANE, 69, of Spencer, West Virginia, formerly of Ravenswood, West Virginia, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on January 23, 2021.
She graduated from Calhoun County High School in 1970. While being a homemaker, her favorite hobby was quilting. She enjoyed church and gospel sings as well as spending time with family, friends and her church family.
Fran was preceded in death by her parents, Cecil and Wilma Sleeth Starcher; her husband, Ronnie Lane; her son, Stewart Lane; a sister, Mary Jane Bailey; and her brothers, Howard, Jerry, Bill, and Webster Lee.
Surviving her are her brother, Robert “Bob” Starcher of Zanesville, Ohio and Glen (Janet) Starcher of Ripley, West Virginia; her sisters, Ruth Casto and Edie Miller, both of Spencer; special brother, Richard (Rita) Bailey; along with several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
She will be missed by all because of her smile and unique sense of humor.
Service will be held at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at the Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home in Spencer with Pastor Loren Price officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Per Fran’s wishes, she will then be cremated and a family burial will take place at a later date.

She is survived by her daughters, Mary Lou Ballinger, Terri Jean Blosser and Robin Lynn (Mike) Burgess; a son, Okey Ray (Vera Lynn) Blosser, Jr.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was a preceded in death by her husband, Harold Junior Pipkin; siblings, Arletta Szabo, Ruby Webb, Lewis Allen Moore, and Billy Benton Moore; and grandchildren, Kelly Jo Blosser and Corey Burgess.
Per her wishes, there will be no visitation or service.

She was born August 16, 1943, the daughter of the late Harley and Mabel Lowe of Spencer. Jeanie was a 1961 Spencer High School graduate, a lifelong supporter of the Blue Grass Riding Club and a homemaker.
She loved spending time with her husband of 26 years prior to his passing in April of 2020. She enjoyed spending time with her kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids, as well as her pets Scooter, Rowdy, and Snoopy. She always had great stories to tell about her adventures as a Capitol Security Guard and all the many worldly travels she spent on the road with her husband and their families and friends.
Jeanie is survived by her son, Richard Newton “Skip” (Terri) Board of Leroy; step-sons, Michael Shane Nutter of Clover and Charles Kevin (Phyllis) Nutter of Spencer; step-daughter, Lisa Ann (Steve) Simmons of Spencer; and a brother, Raymond Lee (Sonny) Stevens of Akron, Ohio. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Braden Board, Muriah and Karlee Nutter, Hunter and Dalton Simmons, Kelsie Nichols, Miranda and Autumn Board, Jakiah Greathouse, and step-grandson, Kody (Felisha) Kerns; and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Jeanie was preceded in death by her husband, Charles B. Nutter; son, Allen Ray Board; step-sons, Stephen Scott Nutter and Tim Stewart; and brothers, Harley Lowe, Jr. and Edward Lowe.
Per her wishes, she was cremated and a memorial service will be planned at a later date with Randy Wayne and Karen Ritchie officiating.

Warren worked at Ford Motor Company in Ohio through the years of 1957- 1959. He attended Glenville State college year unknown. After college he went into long distance trucking for many years. He also enjoyed being a farmer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother and three sisters.
Left behind to cherish his memory, is his wife of 10 years, Betty Kerby; three sons, Warren Edwin Kerby II (Pam) of Parkersburg, James Kerby (Amanda) of Grantsville, WV and Everett Nicholas “Nick” Kerby of Arnoldsburg; Tanya Kerby of Parkersburg, Leland, Chase, Vanessa Kerby all of Grantsville, WV; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will 2:00 PM~ Sunday, January 17, 2021 at Taylor- Vandale Funeral Home in Spencer, WV. Burial will follow at Hur Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday, January 16, 2020 from 4:00- 8:00 PM at the funeral home.

He was born October 25, 1930 to John Smith Kelly, Sr. and Gusta Faye Kelly. He was a life-long farmer, a veteran of the Korean War, and most importantly a Christian and faithful member of the Hurricane Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Beulah Sandoval Kelly; his daughter, Helen Kelly Mills; and his brother, Billy Kelly.
He is survived by his son, Mike (Debbie) Kelly; his grandchildren, Carol (Kevin) Ohse, Georgie (Bo) Carter, John Pierson, Jennifer (Lewis) Whaley, and Tyler Kelly (Casey); six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; his wife, Jewell Carpenter and her family; and three brothers, Bob, Steve, and Joe Kelly.

Obituary Preview: Benny Smith Knight, age 80 of Clendenin, WV joined his grandson Braxton in Heaven on Sunday January 3,2021. Benny graduated from Spencer High School, where he excelled in football and track. He retired fromWarden's Kitchen Gallery, enjoyed his part time job at Advance Auto and served as a consultant for KnightHorstShredding, taking tremendous pride in the company's success. He was a longtime member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.
Throughout his life, Benny never met a stranger and made lifelong friends along the way. He possessed a caring and generous heart, willing to help anyone. Benny was so proud of his family: his adoring wife and precious children and grandchildren. There was nothing more important to him than his family. Benny instilled hard work and commitment while raising Brent and Stacie, teaching them above all else to "just do the right thing". He took pride in everything he did and made sure that it was done well. Benny was always looking at family pictures on his iphone and enjoyed decades of family vacations to the beach.
Nothing pleased him more than enjoying the fresh air and beautiful scenery of his beloved farm in Amma, WV. He was a spirited Mountaineer sports fan cheering loudly “Let's Go 'Eers”. Gerry's cooking was the way to his heart, always boasting about his wife's skills in the kitchen. We marveled at how much pie, ice cream and whipped cream Benny could fit into a dessert bowl, always finishing every bite! He so enjoyed his coffee and breakfast mornings to gather and chat it up with his friends.
He was preceeded in death by parents Bob L. and Berlin Squires Knight, grandparents, Okey K. and Bonnie “Maw” Squires and grandson, Braxton Knight. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 57 years Geraldine “Gerry” Holbert Knight of Clendenin, WV; loving father to son Brent Knight and wife Michele of Brentwood, TN, daughter Stacie Knight Wilford and husband Bill of Nashville, TN and grandchildren Brittany, Greenlee and Vance.
The immediate family will have a private graveside service at the Knight Cemetery with Pastor Lee Swor officiating. There will be no visitation or service because of Covid protocols. A memorial service will be planned at a later date.

Janie is survived by her husband, James David “Bud’ Bowman; sons, Mike (Danita) Rhodes, Jr. and their children, Micky (Jeff) Davis and their children, Oaklyn, Kamdyn, and Michael, all of Ohio, Kipra Rhodes of Ohio, Josiah Rhodes and his companion Annabel, of Ohio, Joe (Amy) Rhodes and their children, Kole, Sam, and Canyon, all of Ohio, Derek (Lyndsey) Bowman and their children, Aiden, Jace, and Tristan, all of Parkersburg, West Virginia, and Bobby Frank Bowman and his companion Jamie, of Ohio; a sister, Loretta (Gary) Alvis of Spencer; and a brother, Paul (Connie) Burdette of Spencer.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby Ray Burdette, Jr..
The family would like to thank the staff of Roane General Hospital, CAMC Memorial, the doctors at both hospitals who treated Janie, and all the friends and family who helped in any way.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at the Mt. Zion Cemetery near Peniel, West Virginia, with Pastor Shane Greathouse officiating. There will be no viewing or visitation at the funeral home.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ona Gae (Settles) Paxton; brothers, Paul Brooks Paxton and Robert Allen Paxton; sisters, Virginia Oleda Miller, Retha Mae Paxton, Nina Ellen Bartlett, and Faye Ermadean Roberts; daughter-in-law, Deloris Kaye (McCumbers) Paxton; along with several nieces, nephews, and brothers-in-law.
Surviving are children, Marvin (Melinda) Paxton, Steven (Carolyn) Paxton, and Paul (Shannon) Paxton; grandchildren, Marvin (Monica) Paxton, Jr., Matthew (Samantha) Paxton, Elizabeth Paxton, and Alicia Paxton; great-grandchildren, Emmett , Brooklynn, and Aleiyah Paxton; and siblings, Alice Ferrell and Gladys (Ed) West.
James graduated from Spencer High School and was employed by Kellwood Company for over 40 years. He enjoyed watching WVU basketball, attending gospel sings, reading, and the time he spent with friends each morning at the Country Table.
Service will be at 12:00 noon on Saturday, January 2, 2021 at the Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home in Spencer with Pastor Jack Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in the Eventide Cemetery in Spencer. Visiting is two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

Carolyn J. Hersman - April 17, 1932 - December 26, 2020

Obituary Preview: Carolyn June (Starcher) Hersman, 88, of Spencer WV, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, December 26, 2020 at Jackson General Hospital in Ripley, WV. She was born on April 17, 1932 the daughter of the late Verner Edward Starcher and Bertha McCauley Starcher of Spencer.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was affectionately called Meemaw by all. She was retired from Spencer State Hospital with over 20 years of service and was a homemaker who enjoyed listening and singing gospel songs (Amazing Grace was her favorite) and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Wayne Hersman, with whom she was happily married to for 53 years. Her son, Stephen Wayne Hersman, her granddaughter, Kaitlyn Leigh Hersman, sisters, Peggy Forron and Nancy Bales.
Those left to treasure her memory are her three children, daughters, Brenda (Darrell) Johnson of Lafayette, La., Tammy (David) Nida and son, Timothy (Sherry) Hersman of Spencer, her sister, Judy Roberts of Spencer. Her grandchildren, Crystal Albarado (Thomas Rountree), Misty (Christopher) Tidwell and Bobby Johnson of Lafayette, La., Sumer Mcguire , Faith (John) Ash and Addison Hersman all of Spencer. Her great grandchildren, Chase and Joshua Albarado, Jax and Mason Johnson, and Presli Tidwell all of Lafayette, La., Ezra Moore and Oakley Ash of Spencer. Also, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be Wednesday, December 30, 2020 from 6:00- 8:00 P.M. at the Taylor- Vandale Funeral Home in Spencer, WV. A memorial service will be taking place at a later date. Due to the Coronavirus, it is required that all who attend must wear a mask and observe social distancing.

Tom is survived by his parents, Bill and Sandy Shreve of Spencer, WV, his sons, Thomas Dalton Wilson and Logan Wayne Wilson and stepdaughters Rain and Sage Orndorff and Tara Miller, his grandmother Pansey Sutphin, his twin brother, Tim Wilson and his brothers William Shreve II, Chris Shreve, Kevin Shreve and Brian Shreve. He is also survived by a half-brother, Rick Ash and half-sisters Ranell Ash Windland and Marty Carte.
Tom was born on December 12, 1965 in Parkersburg, WV. Tom became an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed sports, whether it was playing, coaching or watching. Tom (Stokes) was a 1984 graduate of Spencer High School. Upon graduation Tom chose a career in the oil and gas industry and realized very quickly that he had found his perfect job. He was a devoted father and loved spending time with his children. His quick wit and sense of humor would lighten any conversation. His Family, his friends and his faith were his simple treasures.
Tom was preceded in death by his stepson, Josh Simons, grandmother “Mom”, Gertrude Shreve and his grandfathers, Hank Shreve and Jack Sutphin.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00pm on Thursday, January 21, 2021 at the Greathouse Cemetery on Triplett Road near Spencer with Pastor James Epling officiating.

Ernie B. Fox - June 09, 1952 - December 20, 2020

Obituary Preview: ERNIE BROOKS FOX, 68, of Spencer, West Virginia, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 20, 2020 at home.
He was born on June 9, 1952, a son of the late Jarrett “Pete” and Phyllis Matics Fox.
He was a graduate of Spencer High School and Concord University. “Coach” retired from Roane County Board of Education after 30 years of teaching and coaching at Linden and Walton Elementary, Walton and Roane County High Schools.
Ernie was an active member of Gilboa Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and Sunday school teacher. He also provided Bible study each week to the patients at the long term unit of Roane General Hospital for 13 years. He had also been a member of Gideons International.
Ernie never met a stranger and was loud, bigger than life, and was always making people laugh.
Surviving him are his wife of 40 years, Debbie and son, Benjamin; a sister, Linda Coffindaffer and her husband, Wade; mother-in-law, Fern McCoy; sisters-in-law, Jan Rohr and Margie Parlier and her husband, Darrrell; nieces, Sarah Tolley, Rebecca Gaughan, and Claire Rohr; nephews, Jay Coffindaffer, Christian Rohr, Mitchell Rohr, and Bryson Parlier; and five great-nieces and great-nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, December 24, 2020 at the Fox Cemetery with Pastor Larry Greathouse officiating.
To honor Ernie’s generous spirit and love of education, in lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations to the Roane County Scholarship Fund, 604 Summit Street, Spencer, WV 25276 or to the Gilboa Baptist Church, P.O. Box 437, Spencer, WV 25276 for a special fund to help those in need.

She was born July 27, 1934 in Roane County, a daughter of the late Ralph G. and Gladys Ashley Atkinson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Eugene Cline; a son, Danny Cline; and two brothers, Darris and Delmar Atkinson.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her family, church family, and friends brought great joy to her life. She loved the Lord and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Spencer for 53 years where she faithfully served on many boards and committees, her favorite being the Deaconess Board where she worked diligently to help care for others. She also greatly enjoyed music and singing in the choir. She looked forward to Saturday evenings so she could tune in and enjoy listening to the Gaither Gospel Hour. She was an inspiration and touched many lives during her lifelong journey.
Left to treasure her memory are her three grandchildren, Danelle (Russ) McCray, Brandon (Megan) Cline, and Whitney (Nathan) Williams; her two great-grandchildren, Taylor McCray and Lincoln Cline; her daughter-in-law, Debbie Cline; two sisters, Betty Boggs of Liberty, North Carolina and Sharon Wine of Culloden, West Virginia; and several nieces and nephews, all of whom she was so proud of and loved dearly.
Family and immediate friends are welcome to attend a graveside service at 11:00am Saturday, December 19, 2020 at the Eventide Cemetery in Spencer with Pastor Mark Wood and Rev. George Chandler officiating. Due to COVID-19, it is required that all who attend must wear a mask and observe social distancing.

John is survived by his companion, Irene Truesdale; daughter and son-in-law, Debra Cale and Samuel Cale IV of Lumberport, West Virginia; two sisters, Betty Renstorm of Elkview, West Virginia and Mary-Ann McCune of Charleston, West Virginia; and a brother, Thomas Bumgarner of Teays Valley, West Virginia.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Barbara Bumgarner and an infant brother.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00pm on Thursday, December 10, 2020 at the Mt. Pisgah Cemetery in Wirt County with Pastor Daniel McClung officiating. There will be no visitation or services at the funeral home.

Velma was the daughter of John D. and Ella Jane Phillips McCauley. Velma was born October 20, 1929 in Reedyville, Roane County. She was the youngest of ten McCauley children. All of her siblings have passed away.
She worked at the Conner-Amos Nursery before her marriage. She homemaker and worked the family farm at Otto with her husband, Donzel, until they moved to Spencer in later years. Most of all, she was a devoted and loving wife, Mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her great-grandchildren, Annamaria, Eliza, Alexander, Benjermin, Landen, Lucrysta, Abby, and Lyanna brought such joy to her life.
She was a member of the Otto Advent Church and attended the Spencer Nazarene Church after moving to Spencer.
She is survived by three daughters, Donna Walbrown of Spencer, Debbie (Greg) Burdette of Parkersburg, and Joyce (Dick) Reed of Spencer; two sons, Gary (Darla) Walbrown of Point Pleasant, and Mike Walbrown of Oak Hill, WV; a son-in-law George Dudding of Spencer; grandchildren, Sarah Beth, Matthew, Rachael, Christopher, Jennifer, John, Alexander, and Andrew and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and siblings, Velma was preceded by her husband of 65 years, Donzel L. Walbrown; three daughters, Sharon and Kathy Walbrown, and Pamela Dudding; daughter-in-law, Cindy Shirley Walbrown. Due to COVID 19, her burial will be private. She will be laid to rest beside her husband, at the Road Run Cemetery, Beech, West Virginia. “Her life will be celebrated every day by those she knew and loved.”

She was married to the love of her life, the late Darris Edward Atkinson, on April 17, 1959 and has now joined him in their heavenly home.
Georgia is survived by four children, Diane Kyer of Spencer, Darlene (Jamie) Steele of Ripley, Eddie (Michelle) Atkinson of Parkersburg and Gloria (Paul) Vannoy of Reedy; her sister and best friend, Stella Hall of Parkersburg; 10 grandchildren, Martha, Rodney, Shayla, Lydia, Jessi, Blaire, Baylee, Kristin, Micah and Caleb and 7 great-grandchildren, Samantha, Cameron, Carter, Eli, Carson, Kenzie and Kyler and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by 5 brothers, Ray Brannon, Cliff, Delpha, Don and Nelson Butler; and 6 sisters, Gae Smith, Lura “Dot” Webb, Rushie Oglesbee, Lear Wears, Virginia Parsons and Genevieve Butler and a son-in-law, David Kyer.
Service 1:00 pm Saturday, December 5, 2020 at the TAYLOR-VANDALE FUNERAL HOME, Spencer, with Pastor Shane Greathouse officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Zion Cemetery. Visiting hours will be from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Friday at the funeral home.
