Jo Ann Gary - November 16, 1932 - February 11, 2022

Departed: 02/11/2022 (Timpson)
Obituary Preview: Jo Ann Gary, 89, of Timpson, Texas, passed away on February 11, 2022, in Conroe, Texas. She was born on November 16, 1932, in Panola County, to the late Jim Richard and Odessa (Burks) Keating. Funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, February 19, 2022 at Timpson Missionary Baptist Church with Bro. Levi Cohorst officiating. Interment will follow at Timpson Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.
A visitation will be held prior to the service at 12:00 pm, Saturday, February 19, 2022, at Timpson Missionary Baptist Church.
A view into Jo Ann and who she was must include the fact that she was an avid reader – making some favorite places to visit libraries and bookstores.
She was an excellent cook and showed her love by planning her meals consisting of each family member’s favorites.  Specialties of hers were homemade biscuits, dressing, fresh peach cobbler and coconut cake.  She would read recipe books like they were novels.  After living in a small town, another one of her thrills was to go down the aisles of a large grocery store checking out all the choices, especially the spices.
At Christmas, she enjoyed spending time with her grand, great-grand and great-great-grandchildren while they laughed, talked, and treasured their time together.  She never forgot to share the true meaning of Christmas and the fact that God loves us before a single present was ever opened in her home.
Another favorite of Jo Ann’s was challenging her memory by listening to Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune – she excelled at both.  We would kid her that her name could have been Alexa because every time we needed a date, a spelling, a fact or a definition, we asked her, and she was able to be our “memory”.
Jo Ann had a beautiful laugh that went on and on until she and everyone around her were in tears.  Everyone was always welcome at Jo Ann’s house anytime for coffee, Sunday lunch, or even an overnight stay.
The very best description of Jo Ann is that she was a perfect example of a strong Christian lady.  This could be seen in her well-worn Bible, her regular attendance at church and bible study, and her habit of sending beautiful birthday cards to loved ones with meaningful handwritten bible verses to guide her friends and family along their way. Lastly, she was everyone’s Grannie – as a friend of her granddaughter stated so well:
“Someone I love very much went to be with Jesus last night.
When I looked at you, I never saw a wrinkle, though I’m sure you did.
I never saw a pound you gained or lost, though I’m sure you did.
I never say your fault, though I’m sure you did.
All I ever saw when I looked at you was love. Thank you. Grannie, for loving me like you did, always!”
Jo Ann is survived by her sister, Nette Els; her children, Kathy Richard, Barbara Crouch and husband, Melvin, Richard Gary and wife, Sherry, Mark Gary and wife, Nancy; her grandchildren, Amanda George, Sean Crouch, Zachary Richard, Heather Bryan, Krystal Zwerneman, Toni Goss, Katie Kelley, Travis Gary; and her 13 ½ great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Jo Ann was preceded in death by Mervin Gary, her beloved husband of 64 years, and 3 sisters and 4 brothers.

Dorothy May MacLean - November 09, 1923 - December 27, 2021

Departed: 12/27/2021 (Timpson)
Obituary Preview: Dorothy May Schuhmann Hooper MacLean left this earthly world on December 27, 2021, but memories of her remain to be treasured by generations of loved ones. A family viewing will be held at Taylor Funeral Home, 511 Ross Graves Drive, Timpson Texas on Monday, January 3, 2022 from 9-9:30am. Friends are invited to join the family at 9:30, with the funeral being conducted at the same location beginning at 10am. Graveside services will follow at New Prospect Cemetery, FM 1645, Timpson, Texas. Born on November 9, 1923, in La Grange, Texas to Monroe Henry Emil and Clara Laura Dippel Schuhmann, Dorothy grew up speaking German in the Fayette County farming community where her family settled in 1853. One of ten children, she was thrust into adulthood responsibilities before her eleventh birthday due to her mother’s death in childbirth. Nicknamed “Sissy” as a child and now the oldest daughter still at home, Dorothy became the primary caregiver for her siblings until her father remarried in 1936 to Alma Schroeder. Four years later in 1940, at the age of sixteen, Dorothy fell in love with and married tall, broad[1]shouldered Hilton Hooper from Shelby County, Texas. The handsome East Texan and the pretty, auburn-haired fräulein made a stunning couple. Together, they were magic on the dance floor — and there must have been some magic elsewhere, as well, because their marriage was blessed with four children. Priscilla Ann, the eldest, was born in 1941, followed by Fred Hilton in 1945, Robert George in 1946, and Cynthia Jo in 1954. Caring for her husband and children brought Dorothy great joy. Whether cooking, sewing, gardening, or cleaning, she did it with all her heart because it was for her family. She also took pride in her work outside of the home. After completing cosmetology classes in the mid-1950s, Dorothy worked for several years as a beautician in Pasadena, Texas. With her newfound skills, she could finally achieve the curly hair she had always wanted! Dorothy and Hilton’s marriage ended with his untimely death in 1968 from a work-related accident. Faced with the task of supporting herself and their youngest child, Cynthia, Dorothy courageously enrolled in secretarial training and found employment in Center, Texas with a local savings and loan association. Her warm smile, quick wit, and caring nature endeared her to customers young and old. Her many friends from Center and Timpson were sad to see her move to Nacogdoches in 1977 to serve as dorm mother to the 150 Stephen F. Austin State University students residing in Gibbs Hall. Dorothy enjoyed mothering “her girls,” as she called them, but after much encouragement from her family, she decided to retire and move to San Antonio to live closer to Priscilla, her eldest daughter, and Priscilla’s husband, Jimmy, now deceased. Dorothy’s youngest son, Bobby, was a key enabler of this move because he purchased the home for her where she initially resided. It was in San Antonio that she met Colonel Norman A. MacLean, a retired Air Force pilot and nearby neighbor. In 1980, Dorothy and Norm married, but unfortunately tragedy struck again. In 1983, after only a few short years of marriage, Norm succumbed to cancer. She was alone once more, but still strong, still resilient. For the next 26 years, Dorothy continued to reside in the Castle Hills Forest home she shared with Norm, enjoying the company of beloved neighbors and hosting frequent family gatherings. In 2009, she decided she wanted to spend her remaining years in East Texas. With her children’s full support, she relocated one more time to Cushing, Texas, establishing a home on land owned by her eldest son, Fred, and his wife, Joyce. This arrangement gave her the ability to preserve daily independence, while assuring nearby assistance whenever needed. During those years, nothing gave her more pleasure than morning coffee shared with her son, Fred. While her physical health began to decline, her mental acuity was as sharp as ever. She dearly loved phone calls and visits from friends and family. She was proud to still be driving in her 90s and was most reluctant to surrender her driver’s license at 95. She still found great joy in life and in her strong faith. However, in 2015, tragedy returned. Perhaps the greatest sorrow Dorothy endured during her lifetime was the much too soon death of her youngest son, Bobby, to cancer. She continued to mourn his passing for the rest of her life and would have been bereft without his weekly Sunday calls, except Bobby’s wife, Kathy, lovingly continued the Sunday tradition up until the time Dorothy could no longer talk on the phone. With the passage of years and continued loss of mobility, balance, and hearing, it was soon evident that it was time to make assisted living arrangements. This determination was not made lightly, and for once in her life, it was not Dorothy’s decision. In late 2020, she moved to Magnolia Court in Nacogdoches, Texas and then in 2021, when even more care was needed, she chose her final residence, Garrison Nursing Home in Garrison, Texas. The family is deeply thankful for the loving care provided to Dorothy by both Magnolia Court and Garrison Nursing Home. The staff at Garrison was particularly supportive during the final few months of her life, when Dorothy faced the loss of a beloved granddaughter, Kimberly, in September to COVID, and her own bout with the debilitating virus in December. As Dorothy is welcomed by her heavenly Father, we remember her legacy and honor her for the way she lived her life: • Strong-willed…some might say stubborn • Unafraid of hard work; fiercely independent • No one ever left her home hungry • Happiest surrounded by her family, but dancing was a close second • Loving mother and grandmother • Devoted wife, daughter, sister, aunt, friend • Proud matriarch of a family that spans six generations and includes four children, thirteen grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren, nineteen great-great grands, and two great-great-great grands • Faithful servant of Jesus Christ, her Lord and savior

Ann graduated from Timpson high school in 1958, becoming a nurse’s aide in various locations and later on becoming a site safety officer for Becon.  In 1989 she married the love of her life, Bill Davis.  The couple went on many adventures together across the United States and laid their roots in Timpson, Texas. Ann had many hobbies including family genealogy, gardening, and many kinds of needle work. Her biggest passion was family. From the binders full of family history records, to the annual “Davis Family Reunion”, she loved and cherished each and every one here today. But don’t let the sweet face fool you, Ann was a bundle of spunk and sass.

Although our hearts are filled with sorrow, let us remember the happy moments. All of the smiles and laughs shared. She is back again with her best friend, bantering, laughing, and dancing the days away. May her spirit lie within us all, for she will forever be our lily and Chantilly lace.

John Prycer Eakin - July 09, 1938 - November 05, 2021

Departed: 11/05/2021 (Timpson)
Obituary Preview: Funeral services for John Prycer Eakin will be Wednesday, November 10, 2021 at 11:00 am at Taylor Funeral Home in Timpson, Texas followed by a graveside service at Corinth Cemetery. A visitation service will be held prior to the funeral at 10:00 am on Wednesday, November 10, 2021. John Prycer was born on July 9, 1938 to John Herbert and Margaret (Prycer) Eakin and passed away on November 5, 2021 in Lufkin, Texas where he resided for over 50 years.
JP proudly served in the U.S. Army for two years and two days. The only test he claimed to have passed while in the Army, an “isolation tolerance exam” sent him to Thule, Greenland for a lonely and frigid ten months and seventeen days. He loathed cold weather and swore he would never be cold again, and as far we know, he never was.
He retired from the papermill in 1999 after 29 dedicated years of employment. Members of our household were trained to leave the phone unanswered after 10 pm on his days off so he couldn’t be summoned to work. Unfortunately, there were a couple of slip ups.
Dad had quite a way with words, and I wish I had copied down all of his signature quotes. “I’ll be a blue- nosed gopher,” or “Jesus jumping catfish” were popular in moments of disbelief. If something took too long he’d often remark “Bob was a calf, but now he’s a full grown bull”. Perhaps a favorite when referencing to the confused, “He doesn’t know if he’s scratching his clock or winding his b****”.
He was a die hard Dallas Cowboys fan and faithfully wore his cap commemorating their five Super Bowl wins regardless of the success of the current season. Dad loved bass fishing, camping, and riding motorcycles with Troy and I when we were growing up. Many childhood memories were spent camping in a blue tent, fishing in the wee morning hours, and feasting on a “jungle lunch”.
His greatest accomplishment, though, was watching his four grandchildren grow up. He felt great pride in each of their achievements and found every visit to be a priceless memory. He has instilled a deep love in all of his children and grandchildren; something that will go far beyond his earthly passing. While there is a hole in all of our hearts, one has been filled in Heaven.
John is survived by his son, Troy Eakin; daughter, Holly Wills and husband, James; ex-spouse, Bonnie Corley Eakin; grandchildren, John Taylor Eakin, Hannah Corely Eakin, Anna Sauer and husband, Kyle, and Abby Wills; great-grandchildren, Sadie Grace Eakin and Madison James Sauer; brothers, Tony Eakin and wife, Maureen, and Gregory Eakin; sisters, Becky Simmons and husband, John Earl, Janeice Carrington, and Monica Packard and husband, Brad; and a host of family that will miss him greatly.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John Herbert and Margaret Prycer Eakin.
