Departed: 04/25/2024 (Hyde Park)
Obituary Preview: Dorothy “Dottie” Janke, a beacon of love and selflessness, passed away peacefully at home on April 25, 2024, after a brave and long battle with cancer.
Dottie was born November 16, 1939, in New York City. She was the only daughter of Wayne S. and Antoinette C. Wagner, who both pre-deceased her. She was a proud graduate of Franklin Delano Roosevelt High School, Class of ’57. Her passion for helping others led her to pursue a career in nursing. She became a Registered Nurse through the Hudson River School of Nursing program, where she met her lifelong friend Patty McFall. Dottie spent her early career working in family practice with Dr. Hurst in Hyde Park, NY. She worked for several years at the NY State Hospital in Poughkeepsie.
She took a break from nursing and opened DJ’s Deli in Coldenham, NY, which was a huge success due to her cooking and hospitality. Dottie returned to nursing in the late 1980’s and spent many years working for Sylcox Nursing Home. She finished her career as an Intake Nurse for Mid-Hudson Managed Home Care in Newburgh.
On April 20, 1963, Dottie married William H. Janke, Jr, who pre-deceased her in 2019. Dottie was a devoted mother to JoAnn (partner Todd Bonfanti), William (wife Meredith), Richard (fiancé Michelle), and Michael (wife Marci). She cherished every moment with her beloved grandchildren Nina Grace, Evan, Lila, Riley, Gavin, and Jackie. She counted Colin and Morghain Losgar as bonus grandchildren. She leaves behind 2 nephews, Robert Janke & David Janke, and many cousins.
Family was everything to Dottie and she loved big holiday gatherings; she spent hours in the kitchen making enough food for an army. No one ever left her table hungry. She was an incredible baker, making dozens of Christmas cookies every year for family and friends. She made special birthday cakes for her children and grandchildren, never giving herself enough credit for her creativity and artistry.
Dottie’s other interests included showing classic cars with Bill. They were members of the Hudson Valley Model A Club, and they toured the Hudson Valley in their restored Model A. They had several other classic cars and Dottie’s favorite was a fully restored bright red 1953 Chevrolet pick-up, which consistently placed at shows. She and Bill spent many years golfing up and down the East Coast. Dottie had a green thumb and her favorite red roses and sunflowers always thrived under her care.
Dottie’s legacy is one of love, generosity and a life lived in service of others. Her passing leaves an immeasurable void, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of those she touched.
The family thanks Cardinal Hospice, Precious Care & Memories Home Health, and especially Sallie McCray for all the love, care and support they provided to Dorothy and the family. This was an exceptional team of caregivers who were dedicated to making Dottie’s remaining time happy and comfortable.
As we bid farewell to Dorothy Janke, we celebrate a woman dearly loved. She was a treasured friend, a devoted nurse, a loving mother, grandmother, and an irreplaceable presence in the lives of many. Dottie’s kindness and warm smile will be forever etched in our memories.

Agnes Mary Downes - August 30, 1930 - April 04, 2024

Departed: 04/04/2024 (Hyde Park)
Obituary Preview: Agnes Mary Downes, a longtime resident of Hyde Park, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2024, at Northern Dutchess Hospital with family at her side. She was 93.
Born August 30, 1930, in Rochester, NY, she was the daughter of Truman D. and Alice (Reddy) Bartlett. When asked her name on her first day of kindergarten, she emphatically replied, “Mary” and was known as such from then on. The Bartlett family moved to Hyde Park in the mid-’40s. Mary, a dark-haired, brown-eyed beauty, had many suitors as a student at Roosevelt High School (class of 1948), but it was a lanky local boy, David M. Downes, who captured her attention and her heart. She was married on June 27, 1953, in Regina Coeli Church in Hyde Park carrying a bouquet of white roses.
Very soon thereafter, her family grew (and grew). Mary lived her life for her family. She was a dedicated stay-at-home mom before there was an option for mothers to work outside the home. Mary considered her seven children, Peggy, Julie, Susan, Jane Ann, David, Sarah and Amy, her greatest accomplishment.
Though home life was hard for her, Mary always approached the burdens of a large family with enthusiasm. She would create an exciting meal out of ground beef and macaroni just by renaming it Hungarian Goulash; she would find a myriad of ways to bake with apples including apple crisp, apple küchen, apple betty, and apple pie; and she would enthusiastically rally the kids with a cheery, “We’re going to work all day today!” on any typical Saturday. Mary was selfless in her love and it goes without saying that she always put someone else’s needs before her own.
From Mary, her children learned a love of crafting and continue the tradition of exchanging handmade gifts every Christmas. Her sewing machine was the home’s background soundtrack and she enjoyed quilting, crocheting and cross-stitch. Mary was a 4H leader, teaching her daughters and others sewing and cooking. She was also a gym teacher with her best friend Jane Eckelman at Regina Coeli, the Catholic school her children attended. Despite not having any teaching background, Mary and Jane did have lots of experience with children and they were beloved for their Ethel and Lucy spirit.
Mary was an active volunteer in her community. She was a member and event chair of the Hyde Park Library Quilting Club and Skyllkill Embroidery Club member. She was an early member of the F.W. Vanderbilt Garden Association with over 1000 hours served. She was a longstanding volunteer for Meals on Wheels. In 2009, she was awarded the President’s Volunteer Service Award by President Barack Obama.
Alone at home once her family had grown, Mary became a strong, confident, independent woman of these new times who finally learned to put herself first. She will be remembered by all for her sharp wit, keen sense of humor, kindness, and perseverance through personal and mental health challenges.
Mary is survived by her children: Maggie (Paul) Underwood of Westboro, Mass; Julie (Dave) Witko of Chandler, AZ; Susan Cochrane of Los Angeles, CA; Jane (Tom) Struzzieri of Saugerties, NY; David T. Downes of Highland, NY; Sarah (Steven) Miller of Rhinebeck, NY; and Amy Downes (Jon) Drickel of Staatsburg; thirteen grandchildren: Adam and Quinn Underwood; Ryan Witko and Holly Ferguson; Joey Cochrane; Pia, Tommy, and Sammy Struzzieri; Taylor Papka and Kelly Downes; Agnes Tess Miller; and Kate and Erin Drickel; seven great-grandchildren: Ava and Logan Underwood; Oliver Witko; Quinn Cochrane; and Mary, Mitchell and Keira Ferguson. Mary also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews on both the Bartlett and Downes sides.
Mary is predeceased by her sisters Dorothy Richard and Joyce Bartlett and brothers Kenneth Bartlett and Dick Bartlett. Her best buddy, Jane Eckelman, died in 2015.
The family wishes to thank the extraordinary caregivers who made it possible for Mary to live comfortably in her home until the end, particularly Jen Grant, Anne Trombetti, and Audrey Carson.
Calling hours will be 3 to 8 PM, Friday, April 12th at Sweet’s Funeral Home, Rte. 9, Hyde Park.

Departed: 03/10/2024 (Hyde Park)
Obituary Preview: Carolyn “Joyce” Marra, a longtime resident of Poughkeepsie died peacefully on March 10th, with her son Dana by her side. She was just shy of 84.
She is survived by her two sons, “Padoue” George Edward Marra III, and his wife, Maria, and Dana Marra and his wife, Amanda. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Michael, Robert, Kiersten, Brandon, Breanna, Kimberly, Christopher, Grace and Kelsey; and great-grandsons, Axel and Sawyer.
“Mutter,” as she was named by her grandson, Michael, was a doting grandmother and her grandchildren were the joy of her life. They will remember her best by the adventures she curated and the many crafts created for and made together. Oh, and not to forget the many life lessons and advice given them around her dining or crafting table.
Joyce was a devoted mother, grandmother, friend, community advocate and proud longtime member of the UU Fellowship of Poughkeepsie. She enjoyed crafting in her extensive craft room (fun fact-she turned her 1 bedroom into her craft room and had her bed in the living room), traveling (Maine had her heart), eating out with friends and sitting around the table catching up on everyone’s lives.
“Joyous,” as she was nick-named by a loved classmate’s father, was a proud graduate of Mount St. Mary’s Academy and a loved and valued member of the Roosevelt High School Class of 1958. She had just attended her 50th high school reunion much to her delight. Joyce lived a long and full life. Her wonderful sense of humor and joy for life will be remembered by all.
In keeping with Joyce’s wishes, cremation has already taken place. It was Joyce’s wish that family and friends come together to celebrate her life, as would’ve been done upon her 85th birthday in 2025. As such, a celebration of life gathering will be announced via invite for her birthday month of May, 2024 as soon as arrangements have been made. We will toast “cheers” to our dear Mutter’s life with margaritas and sangria and much, much “JOY.”
May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind always be at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, the rains fall soft upon your fields, and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand – CHEERS Joyce.
Arrangements are by Sweet’s Funeral Home, Hyde Park. To send an online condolence, please visit Joyce’s obituary page at www.sweetsfuneralhome.com.

Born January 2, 1926, in Floral Park, NY, she was the daughter of the late Charles E. Josten and Edna B. Ellerhorst Josten.
On September 28, 1946 in Yonkers, NY, she married the love of her life, Ernest J. Trautmann, who she met while roller skating, and they shared 70 wonderful years together. Mr. Trautmann predeceased her on May 9th, 2017.
Virginia was a member of the Hyde Park United Methodist Church, where she was active with Meals on Wheels, the church choir and the "39ers" social group.
She was also a Charter member of the Hyde Park chapter of AARP.

She could often be found baking gingerbread men with her grandchildren, wishing for wild cards while playing Phase 10 or dancing the jitterbug with her "Honey".
She was a confidant, a best friend, an advisor, a wonderful listener and a great hugger as we filled her in on every aspect of our lives on a weekly, if not daily, basis and she never tired of hearing about it. The void in our hearts created by her absence feels bottomless now but hopefully, in time, the immense love she bestowed upon us all and the multitude of memories she graced us with will fill it in and make us remember only the joy that is Grandma! She is survived by her two children: Ernest Trautmann, and his wife, Christine, Hyde Park, NY, Christine Davidson, and her husband, Paul, Suffield, CT, Four Grandchildren: Bryan Davidson, Stephanie Davidson, Kerianne Trautmann and Morgan Trautmann; Two Great Grandchildren: Charlotte & Miles Davidson

Who writes an obituary?

It may also include information about funeral services, memorial donations, and any other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a few paragraphs at most.

Can I include photos in an obituary?
