Obituary Preview: Mrs. Callie L. Odum McElrath was born in Clay County, AL, to the late Mr. Willie Hinton Odum and Mrs. Annie Gunn Odum on January 28, 1930. She was the fifth child of seven children. All six siblings preceded her in death. Ethel Mae Odum, John Henry Odum, Willie Gene Odum, Annie Lizzie Thomas, Jimmie Lee Odum, and Loula Pearl Reeves.
Mrs. McElrath joined Spring Hill United Methodist Church in Clay County at an early age. After relocating to Coosa County she joined the Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church where she was a faithful and devoted member. Mrs. McElrath was a member of the Missionary Society.
Mrs. McElrath  married Denson McElrath on April 15, 1949 to this union five children were born.  All five children preceded her death. Barbara Ann McElrath, David Lee McElrath Sr. along with three still angels. Denson McElrath passed away on November 1, 1969.
Mrs. McElrath was employed with Prime Healthcare at their Goodwater Healthcare Center. She retired after twenty-four years of service.
Mrs. McElrath transitioned to her eternal life on August 26, 2021 at Goodwater Healthcare Center.
Mrs. McElrath leaves to cherish her memories: Granddaughter, Davida L. McElrath of Antioch, TN; Grandson, David L. McElrath Jr. of Goodwater, Al; Daughter-in-law, Juanita McElrath of Goodwater, AL; Great grandson Richard RJ” Smith II of Antioch, TN; a devoted nephew Varnall Thomas of Goodwater, AL; along with a tribe of other nephews, nieces, relatives, and friends.

Obituary Preview: Dan Martin, Jr. was born on June 17, 1934 in Sylacauga, Alabama to the late Mr. Dan Martin, Sr. and Mrs. Madge (Livingston) Martin. Dan attended the local schools in Sylacauga.
On March 9, 1959, Dan was united in Holy matrimony to Mary Sallie Toney in Coosa County, Alabama. They later relocated to Portland, OR. They remained there over 60 years. Out of that union they had two wonderful children, Bridget N. Hicks and Kenneth E. Martin (Chubby).
Dan worked for over 30 years at the shipyard and the railroads and later retired. Dan departed this life on Wednesday August 25, 2021 in Toccoa, GA. He was preceded in death by his parents and his six siblings: Sylvester Martin, Ruby Lee White, Zola Mae Finch, Lorenzo “Bud” Martin, Andrew “Son” Martin, and Ida Mae Odum.
Dan leaves to mourn, his daughters Bridget N. Hicks, OR, Johnetta Sheree Wakefied (Charles), OR and his son Kenneth E. Martin (Linda), GA. Obituary Preview: Mrs. Ethel M. Pope was born to the union of Turner and Lucille Clemons on September 25, 1927.
She received Christ at an early age at Coosa Valley Baptist Church, where she served as a choir member and church secretary. She was also a member of the Sorrell Social Club and the Cheerful Giver’s Society. She was educated in the Shelby County School System at Shelby Training School. After school, she wed Vernon Kidd in 1947; to this union, three children were born: Clifford, Vernon, and Janice. After Vernon’s transition, she met Charlie Louise Pope; they wed in 1952. To this union, two children were born: Elaine and Christopher. She enjoyed life; she loved to bake cakes, travel, and have family outings. She also became a seamstress. She had no problem correcting you if you were doing something you shouldn’t. She loved Gospel music such as “Never Would Have Made It,” “Amazing Grace,” “Precious Lord,” and “Order My Steps.”
She was preceded in death by her children, Vernon, Janice, and Christopher.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her husband of 68 years, Charlie Pope; her daughter, Elaine Pope; five grandchildren, Anessa Kidd, Clifford Kidd Jr., Hugh Antonious (Jacqueline) Kidd, Vernon Antonious Kidd, and Vernon Rio Kidd; three daughters-in-law; ten great-grandchildren; ten great-greatgrandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends who she assisted along the way.

Later in life she attended Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church where she served as the Mother of the church and a member of the senior mission board. She truly lived life to the fullest through faithfully serving the Lord.  Mrs. Crawford was preceded in death by her parents Green and Mozell White Kelly; her husband Esco Crawford; son George Kelly; sisters Mattie Murchison and Bessie Jackson; brother ML Kelly.
God called this beautiful angel home on March 16, 2021.

Gloria was educated in the Sylacauga School system. Gloria confessed her faith in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at a young age and joined Rising Star Baptist Church. She joyfully affirmed her faith in Jesus and accepted His saving grace and mercy. Gloria was a member of a motorcycle club "One Love One Goal Riderz".
Gloria found the Love of her life Mr. James Alfred "Jim" Nix and the two were married on February 29, 1992.
Gloria was preceded in death by her dad, Mr. J. C. Pilate Sr., her sisters, Diane Pilate Holtzclaw and Carolyn Yvonne Hamilton.
On Thursday, February 18, 2021 Mrs. Gloria Pilate Nix departed this walk of life at UAB Hospital, Birmingham AL.

Mrs. Harvey was a lifelong member of The Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church; where she was a Dedicated Servant. She headed the kitchen committee, she was a Deaconess, she also served on the finance committee, and was an active member of the young adult choir.
Mrs. Harvey was called home to be with the Master on January 11, 2021 at Coosa Valley Medical Center in Sylacauga, Alabama.

Obituary Preview: Deacon Eric Maurice Kelley was born August 8, 1961, to the late Wiltha Ren Kelley and Hazel Kelley in Harpersville, AL.
He was also preceded in death by one sister, Cheryl Kelley, and one special cousin, Charissa Davis.
Deacon Kelley was a graduate of Vincent High School, Class of 1979. He continued his education at Alabama A&M University, Huntsville, AL. In 1980, while attending Alabama A&M University, he joined the Fraternity of Pershing Rifles. In 1982, he went on to attend Basic Training at Fort Benning, GA, and joined the U.S. Army Infantry. Following Basic Training, he then went on to Fort Stewart, GA, for two years and Ashaffenburg, Germany, for two years before being honorably discharged in 1986. He made it to the rank of Sergeant (E5). He was employed for over 30 years by Alabama Power (E.C. Gaston Steam Plant, Wilsonville, AL).
He was a life-long member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Harpersville, AL, where he served as deacon and Sunday School teacher. He was also a member of the Northeast District State Laymen.
He loved hunting and fishing. He loved his family, but most of all, he loved being called “Paw-Paw”.
Deacon Kelley entered eternal rest on Monday, December 14, 2020, at his residence in Vincent, AL.

Mildred confessed Christ at an early age and joined St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church, Sylacauga. She continued her walk with the Lord. However, she moved her membership to the Shekinah Glory Tabernacle of Praise Church in Sylacauga.Throughout her life she was a faithful servant of God. She will forever be remembered as a woman dedicated to family and her community.
She was involved in many different community and civic activities to name a few: the Women’s Missionary Society, The Red Hatters as a Chilly Peppers, The Golden Key Senior Club.    Mildred transitioned to her eternal life Thursday, October 15, 2020 at UAB Hospital, Birmingham, AL. Obituary Preview: Deacon Howard McKinney  was born June 04, 1941 in Coosa County, Alabama to the late Willie Dred McKinney and Adell Brown McKinney.
Deacon McKinney at and early age confessed Christ and joined the Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church. During his journey at Mt. Olive he served as a Deacon, Sunday School, Deacon’s, and Deacon Wives teacher, sung in the church choir, the male chorus, cemetery chairperson and drove the church van.
Deacon McKinney worked at the Shell Cast, Avondale Mills, Rock Quarry, Kimberly Clark/US Alliance. Deacon Howard was well known in the area and a hard worker and a kind hearted man.  He loved to go watch the children play sports at Coosa Central, and tried to coach from the sideline. He also enjoyed working outside, fishing, hunting, and he met No stranger.
Deacon McKinney met and married Nettie L. Johnson on March 11, 1961 and to this union one daughter and three sons were born.
Deacon McKinney passed from time to eternity on Thursday, September 24, 2020 at his residence.
He leaves his memories behind to be cherished by his loving wife, Nettie L. Johnson McKinney of Goodwater, AL; one daughter, Shelia Javan McKinney Thomas of Goodwater, AL; three sons, Gary Aloyious (Rita) McKinney of Goodwater, AL, Xavier (Martha A.) On July 18, 1964 Sister Lee was united in Holy           Matrimony to the late Deacon Joe Lee. To this union four children were born: Cynthia, Kenneth, Rickey, and Patricia.
Sister Lee joined the Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Stanley Threatt.  She served faithfully as the Church Secretary for over 30 years and a member of the Church choir.  She served  approximately three years as the Chairperson for the Church Anniversaries'; she took this up due to the death of her husband (Deacon Joe Lee) She was also a member of the LIGHT Ministry.
Sister Lee was a devoted and loving mother who was well-known to her community.  She loved her family, Pastor, and Church.  Sister Lee met no stranger, she would greet anyone with a smile and a hello.
Sister Lee was preceded in death by her parents,    grandmother, grandfather Jimmy Swain, one brother Champion C. Garrett, Jr., and her devoted husband Joe Lee. On Thursday, September 17, 2020, Sister Lee departed this life at Coosa Valley Medical Center Sylacauga,     Alabama

Obituary Preview: Bernadean Showers was born on August 19, 1929, in Bessemer, Alabama, to the union of A.C. and Rejetta Showers.
Bernadean received his early education at Roosevelt Junior High School and then graduated from Fairfield Industrial High School. He received his B.S. degree from Tuskegee Institute, a Master of Arts degree from the University of Alabama in Birmingham, and further studied at Ball State University, and Alabama State University. He proudly served his country for two years in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He accepted Christ as his Savior at an early age and was united with St. Thomas United Methodist Church after moving to Sylacauga, Alabama, where he served as a class leader, Sunday School teacher, and chairman of several committees.
Bernadean was united in holy matrimony with Mary Lois Price, on December 25, 1955, in Five Points, Alabama. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Sylacauga, Alabama, where they raised their three children, André, Angelo, and April.
He devoted 30 years of dedicated service to Sylacauga City Schools, where he was an industrial arts teacher at East Highland School for 29 years and a math teacher at Sylacauga High School for one year. He was a varsity basketball coach and assistant football coach at East Highland, for several years. During his career, Bernadean was recognized as the Outstanding Industrial Arts Teacher of Alabama, served on the committee to write the Industrial Arts Curriculum Guide for the state of Alabama, and served as an evaluator for the UAB Industrial Arts Curriculum. Upon retiring from education in 1985, he went on to work at the Sylacauga Housing Authority, Talladega College, and Marvin’s Hardware Supply.
Bernadean always gave of himself in community and service activities. He was a member of the Alabama Education Association, National Education Association, Industrial Arts Association of Alabama, Sylacauga Teachers Association, the Talladega County Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc, and Tuskegee Alumni Association. In 1977, he was honored with the Alumni Merit Award, presented by the Southeast Region of the Tuskegee Institute National Alumni Association. In 2019, he was recognized as a “Living Legend” by the Tuskegee University Alumni Association of Talladega County at their annual scholarship banquet.
Bernadean departed this life on Sunday, April 5, 2020, at Coosa Valley Medical Center Nursing Home.
He was preceded in death by his parents, A.C. and Rejetta Showers; brothers, Donald Showers, Ernest Showers, Bennie Lee Showers, and Waverly Showers; and grandson, Jason Showers.

Mr. Roy was employed by Newcomb Spring of Texas for where he retired in 2018  after many years of service.
He was united in holy matrimony, to the love of his life, Wilda Dean Odum on August 17, 1980 at Shiloh Baptist Church in Sylacauga, AL.
James Roy completed his earthly assignment on Tuesday, February 25, 2020.
He was preceded in death by his father James     Preston Roy, mother Willie Mae Joseph, daughter Jamie Krystal Roy, brother Charles Anthony Roy, father-in-law John Henry Odum and mother-in-law Ida Mae Odum, and a nephew William Fredrick Odum.
James leaves to cherish his memories to his wife Wilda Dean Odum Roy, three children, Damon Carter, Jessica Katrina Smith (Anthony), and Jerrica Kristina Roy.

Mary joined Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church in Portland, OR in 1966 where she received Christ and was Baptized under the leadership of Rev. Sylvester McCollum. Mary served faithfully at Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church as the President of the Mission Auxiliary for 18 years. Also, she served as Vice President of the Nurse’s Guild. She was a member of the Union District Baptist Association of Oregon and the General State Convention of the Northwest. In addition, Mary was also inducted into the Mother’s board in 2017. Mary departed this life on Thursday, February 13, 2020 at North East Georgia Regional Medical Center, Winder, GA. She was preceded in death by her parents. She was also preceded in death by her sister Selina Provost and her great granddaughter Jre’Yanna Ware. Beasley Martin - August 25, 1922 - February 13, 2020

Obituary Preview: Beasley Martin was a doting father, grandfather, civic leader, and a man who was blessed with a kind heart. Beasley was born to the parentage of the late Clarence Martin and Willie Mae Martin on August 25, 1922, in Reform, Alabama. Beasley was proud of the small community where he was born and would get excited whenever he came across someone who knew of Pickens County. He was the oldest of seven children and was educated in Pickens County.
During the early 1940s, Beasley’s parents relocated the family to Childersburg, Alabama. After moving to Childersburg, Beasley enlisted in the U.S. Army. Beasley, who was a member of the “Greatest Generation,” landed on a Normandy beachhead on June 6, 1944. This historical event is known as the Normandy Invasion or D Day. On January 18, 1946, Beasley returned home from the military with four years of active service. After returning home from the military, Beasley was employed by the Childersburg Alabama Ordinance and later Anniston Army Depot, where he retired in 1978 with thirty-two years of service.
As if defending his country was not enough to define his service, he went on to be a Boy Scout Leader for twenty-one years and was awarded the Silver Beaver Medal for distinguished service. Beasley’s other civic duties included being a Charter Member of the Childersburg Citizens Advisory Committee; he was one of the original members of the Childersburg Heritage Society, now known as the Historic Heritage Preservation Society. Beasley was responsible for spearheading fundraisers for the United Givers Society and the American Red Cross. Later Beasley joined the ranks of other great civic leaders and was inducted into the Childersburg Chamber Hall of Fame in 2010.
Beasley accepted Christ at an early age and worked diligently at Pleasant Valley Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, where he was a member for over seventy years. Beasley served as Sunday School Superintendent and was a member of the Steward Board. There are many more accolades that could be laid upon this man of ninety-seven years, but the most important of them all is, he was a soldier for Christ.
On January 31, 1948, Beasley married Corrinne McKinney. They were blessed with one loving and devoted son. Beasley was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Christine Pruitt, his brother Willard Martin, his wife of sixty-one years, Corinne, special daughter, Alice Castleberry-Franklin and his step-son, Walter Wallace.
Aside from his community and church service, above all, Beasley was a family man. He leaves to cherish his memory, two sons; Beasley (Marian) Martin of Childersburg, AL, and Roosevelt (Kathleen) Garrett of Fontana, CA, one sister; Effie Williams of Childersburg, three brothers; Gary (Eva) Martin of Childersburg, James (Ola Bell) Martin of Philadelphia, PA and Millard Martin of Houston, TX, one sister-in-law; Bonnie  Threatt of Sylacauga, AL. He also leaves behind three loving and devoted grandchildren who acted as caregivers; Dabreion, Aramie, and Cleveland; a total of nine grandchildren, nine great-grands, two great-great-grands; a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends including Mary Philistine Vincent, caregiver. Beasley will be missed by many but will never be forgotten.
