Shirley Stillinger - December 10, 1930 - October 27, 2018

Departed: 10/27/2018 (Champaign)
Obituary Preview: Shirley Stillinger passed away on October 27, 2018, at her home in Urbana. She died peacefully in her favorite chair, surrounded by photos of her family, autographed pictures of the movie stars she loved as a girl, and a stack of New York Times she needed to catch up on. She is survived by her four children, Tom, Bob, Susan, and Mary, and their families, and by the best group of friends anyone ever had. Those friends (Esther, Barb, Carol, Marty, Jan, and so many others) got her to the doctor, to the movies, and to Trivia Night, and made it possible for her to live independently and enjoy life to the end. Chris Sankey, Becky McWethy, and Lanette Aker also provided much-appreciated assistance.
Shirley Louise Van Wormer Stillinger was born on December 10, 1930, on her grandmother’s kitchen table, in Gainesville, Florida. Her parents were Josephine Shaw Van Wormer and (by adoption) Carl Van Wormer. She moved to Austin, Texas, as a little girl, and later to Houston, where she graduated from San Jacinto High School. She graduated magnum cum laude from the University of Texas at Austin in 1953. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and was president of her sorority, Alpha Phi.
In 1952, Shirley married Jack Stillinger; their children were born in Austin, Boston, and Champaign, as the family moved for Jack’s academic career. Shirley and Jack divorced in 1970. When the youngest child started school, Shirley went back to school herself. She obtained her Masters in Social Work from the University of Illinois in 1969. She then worked for the Department of Children and Family Services in Champaign; at Cunningham Children’s Home, as head social worker; and at A Woman’s Fund, as Executive Director from 1983 to 1995.
Besides her work, which focused on helping people, Shirley gave her time to the community, putting her passion for social justice into action. In 1971, she was one of the founders of A Woman’s Place, the first battered women’s shelter in Illinois (and perhaps in the nation); she was also one of the founders of Hotline for Youth, Parentline, Homestead, and Roundhouse. She served on the Champaign County Board, elected as a Democrat, from 1980 to 1994. She served on numerous committees and governing boards, including those of Gemini, Champaign County Women Against Rape, CASA, Homestead, the University YMCA Board of Trustees, and the Champaign County Chapter of the ACLU (including service as chair and co-chair).
Shirley balanced her professional life with her role as a mother, a balancing act that was unusual at the time. She made time to sew Halloween costumes and cook for and with her family. Despite her very full life, Shirley’s children and grandchildren always knew that they were her favorite people to be around. Shirley taught us all by her example of ethics, kindness, and social responsibility.
Shirley loved music; she knew the lyrics to thousands of songs, and though she didn’t think of herself as a musician she sang to her children when they were little. Later, she loved to listen to the music made by her family and friends—and she would seek out live jazz played by anyone. She loved movies, and she loved to read; she had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, and an uncanny ability to pull up details (which made her a formidable trivia competitor).
She loved people, and people loved her. She threw great parties and was often at the heart of any group of people having fun. She loved to travel and treated her family to many unforgettable trips, including a week each summer in a lovely old house in Pentwater, Michigan.
As a toddler, little Shirley jumped up on the stage at the county fair in Corpus Christi, Texas, and sang and tap-danced with Bob Wills and the Light Crust Doughboys. Her Texas roots were strong, long after she left the state in 1953. She visited often, and in her later years she spent winters with Mary in El Paso or Bob and Shelly in Austin. She appreciated the unique style of Texas courthouses and came only a few short of her goal to visit all 254 of them. Her ashes will be scattered among the bluebonnets in the Texas Hill Country.

Elaine Huddleston Mustain - August 14, 1946 - October 19, 2018

Departed: 10/19/2018 (Champaign)
Obituary Preview: Elaine Huddleston Mustain of Urbana died October 19, 2018 from complications of Alzheimer’s. Elaine was born August 14, 1946, in Washington, DC to Evelyn Williams Huddleston and James Clifford “Cliff” Huddleston, a naval officer. The family lived in Newport RI, the Philippines, Boston, Colorado Springs, and finally Nashville TN. She graduated from David Lipscomb High School.
In 1968 she graduated from Harding College, majoring in violin performance. She began a master’s program at the New England Conservatory in Boston. Midway through that school year, she transferred to Harvard Divinity School, quickly becoming one of the top students and being awarded a Hopkins Share honor scholarship. Majoring in New Testament, Elaine received her MDiv in 1971 and a ThM in 1972.
In June 1969, Elaine married Brian Clark Mustain, originally from Dallas. After leaving Harvard they spent two years in Dallas, where in 1973-74 Elaine taught religion at Ursuline Academy.
For the academic years 1974-76, Elaine and Brian lived in Princeton, New Jersey. Elaine was secretary to the Department of Religion at Princeton University (the department chairman called her “the moral center of the department”) while Brian studied agronomy at Rutgers.
They moved to Bryan-College Station, TX in 1976, where Brian pursued a PhD in plant genetics. Their first child, Andrea, was born in October 1976. Elaine did freelance copyediting, mostly for profs at Texas A&M. She gave birth to Nathan in July 1979.
In 1980 the family moved to Lake Crystal MN, where son Patrick was born in July 1981; then to Lincoln IL in December 1981; and finally to Urbana IL in 1983. Third son Stefan was born in August 1983, and second daughter Adrian in September 1986.
During all their married life, the family remained part of Fellowship of the Way of Christ and considered that group their spiritual home. They also were part of New Covenant Fellowship, Champaign, where Elaine preached on a number of occasions and for several years she taught high school or adult Sunday school classes.
Elaine spent 15 years as a developmental editor at Human Kinetics Publishers in Champaign, specializing in technical and scientific texts.
Elaine’s passion was scholarly study of the New Testament. After leaving Human Kinetics, she devoted her time to research, writing, and teaching on New Testament topics—especially the book of Romans. Before she became ill, for several years Elaine was working on a book focusing on nuanced understandings of the Greek text that in some ways challenge traditional views; she believed scripture presents a much more all-encompassing view of God’s love and grace than most Christian traditions embrace. Her writings eventually will appear on the website BreakingAndEntering.org (not yet active).
Elaine’s older brother David died in 2014, leaving behind his wife, Carolyn, of Missoula, MT. She is survived by her husband Brian; daughter Andrea, of Brooklyn NY; son Nathan and his wife Beth Lownik and their daughter Evelyn, of Baraboo WI; son Patrick, of Washington, DC; son Stefan and his wife Elizabeth, of Chicago; daughter Adrian, of Los Angeles; sister Julie Huddleston Ashton and her husband Tim, of Baton Rouge; and brother Mark Huddleston and his wife Jacqueline, of Powell River, BC.
Elaine’s family wants to express deep thanksgiving to the staff at Bickford Senior Living for the love and care they have shown to her during the past year and a half, as well as to the friends who faithfully visited her.

Herb was a favorite among the school’s athletic teams and also enjoyed driving them as often as possible. He was even featured in a WCIA news segment called “Good News” which highlighted his dedication to the kids he transported safely every day.
Herb was saddened when he was forced into “retirement” from his bus driving career for health reasons in 2005. Obituary Preview: Sharon Carter Brost, 73, of Champaign, IL died Tuesday September 11, 2018, at Meadowbrook Health Center following a nine-month battle with cancer.
Sharon was born February 25, 1945 in Flora, IL. The daughter of Johnnie R. and Eva Lenore (Melrose) Carter. She was the seventh of ten children. At age five Sharon’s family moved to Urbana, IL where she attended Lincoln, Thornburn, and Urbana High School. She graduated from high school in 1963, after which she attended commercial college on the University of Illinois campus.
Sharon worked for the Kroger Co., University of Illinois, and Meadow Gold before marrying her husband, Nicholas Paul Brost in 1980. Sharon and Paul have a daughter, Kelli Nichole Brost, who is the center of their world. Later, Sharon worked for the Unit 4 School District, and retired from the Champaign Post Office after several years of service.
A large portion of Sharon’s free time was spent outdoors. She loved gardening and took pride in her bountiful vegetable gardens and stunning flower beds. She enjoyed camping, fishing, and boating. Sharon was an outstanding cook and believed everything was better on the grill. Earlier in life, she took great pleasure in showing off her cars alongside her brothers. More recently, she reveled in the amount of delicious homemade canned goods she could process in a season. Sharon loved sharing homemade food and canned goods with those she knew would appreciate it. She was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post 5520, and until becoming ill was active in many of their events. She was always ready to get out and go, whether visiting family, shopping, or just driving around town. The perfect end to her day would be spent relaxing by a quiet bonfire.
Sharon loved hosting large family gatherings. She was known for her famous barbeques and fish fries. At some point, she had been the “fun aunt” to many of her nieces and nephews, taking them on weekend trips or spending extra time with them as children. She was always there when needed by her family. Sharon was very devoted to her mother and assisted her in every way possible for many years until she passed in 2004.
Sharon was preceded in death by her parents Johnnie and Eva Carter, husband N. Paul Brost, brother Frank and wife Louella Carter, niece Laurie Shaffer, sister Elnora and husband Tom Russell, brothers Russell Carter, Carroll Ray Carter, Larry Carter, Jerry Carter, and stepdaughter Jeanie Nafe.
