Obituary Preview: John “Jack” Patrick Walsh was born on June 13, 1950 in Buffalo, NY to Clemence and Arlene Walsh. He would be the first of five siblings: Bonita, Janice, Beverly, and Kevin. As a young boy he fostered a love for the outdoors. He’d often tell family stories of camping in the nearby woods or going fishing with neighborhood friends. Jack would regale anyone who would listen to the stories of his Grandpa Borden spending time with him or working on the farm with Uncle Gary, of him raising Plymouth Rock chickens or him playing football during high school. Jack would remember fondly learning how to drive in his dad’s old jalopy and memories of his own Dad being so happy driving his dump truck. There are stories of Jack working on Huey Chote’s 300 -head cattle farm and how he would be so impressed with how smart and mischievous these cows were to try to trick each other out of their allotted food. His experiences here is probably what drove him to pursue his college education in animal husbandry at Alfred State College. Jack truly enjoyed the simple things in life back then - drinking fresh milk from the cows he took care of before the trucks would come by the farm to collect the milk or on occasion visiting McNeilan’s dairy farm that sold 10 cent ice cream cones that surpass the quality and heights of any local ice cream shop today. Ahhh….the good ol’ days!

Jack would eventually leave his hometown in 1970 to go to a Heavy Equipment Operator/Lowboy Truck Driver school in Homestead, Fl. After his completion and certification, Jack went to work for PJ Constructors, a family-owned company.

PJ Constructors gave Jack his first job in the business. As the company’s Lowboy Truck Driver transporting Heavy Equipment, he traveled all over South Florida up and down the Pan Handle. As a Heavy Equipment Operator, he leveled, shoveled, and worked on numerous projects for roads and buildings that are key structures in South Florida’s infrastructure today still. Jack loved working for PJ Constructors, and he would become so closely knitted into the fabric of PJ’s company that Jack was basically family – his love, appreciation, and loyalty would run deeply.

If you ever had the chance to drive around with Jack, he would point out roads PJ’s company worked on roadway’s, building’s streets, driveways, and parking areas that he paved the way for, and would walk you down memory lane of what Miami looked like before the construction boom.

Everyone has their own passion; their own expertise and Jack’s was his work. He loved being depended on to arrive to a work site, unloading equipment, and doing the work that he enjoyed doing. He took pride in it.

While in Miami, Jack also built a life for himself. He met his wife, Ninfa Arredondo, and was married in 1983, making it 40 years this year. They had three beautiful girls together: Dana Maria, Biancamaria, and Ninfamaria. He was a pillar of consistency and stability, always there, always working for his family. Through all our family’s trials and tribulations, Jack had a way of accepting all situations and was all about moving forward. Jack was also a dad of infinite patience (thanks Dad for helping with all our homework and projects!) and at times a jokester that would make him display an endearing toothy grin. His girls would not be who they are today without him and his wife, Ninfa.

As the years went by, Jack worked for just two (2) companies and it was his last company, Ferreira Construction, that bestowed upon Jack the same familial feeling he had as when he first worked for PJ. There is no other company Jack would have wished to work for in his final years.

Ferreira welcomed him into the company and went to such lengths to ensure and support him to help him in his fight against cancer. He praised the people who became a part of his daily life as not only as his coworkers but who became his work family and friends. The Office staff, the supervisors, the owners, all his co-workers he always got “teary eye and choked-up” in his remembrance of their understanding and compassion in his daily life with his battle against the disease. As he used to say, “No better group of people to have known and worked with”.

We were and are he was so blessed to have work for such a great company that believed in him, appreciated him, and loved him. He, as we were and are extremely thankful and grateful for all of Ferreira – from the owners to the office staff to his coworkers that he bonded with and most of all enjoyed working with and for until the end.

As we now drive around South Florida without him in the driver/passenger seat, we think of how he is still intertwined with each project and how he will be remembered with every road we travel down, every lowboy that drives past, and every construction crew we see. We’ll be able to just picture him in his element: dusty construction boots and work clothes, bright neon yellow vest, his handy hard hat, and a big ol’ toothy grin on his face as he waves and pulls himself up into his favorite machine, the backhoe, to get straight to work.

Our beloved Jack/dad was a man of faith and towards the end would always say he truly believed that “…the Lord does work in mysterious ways”. He counted his blessing and was thankful and grateful for the life that he had. He was not a man of many regrets but firmly believed that should you have any doubt about any decisions, just don’t do it! Trust your gut and trust in God.

My husband, their dad was the strongest man I knew, working all throughout his battle and treatments with cancer. He was a fighter to the end. He fought to come home one last time, to come back to the ease of a home that had so many memories of his life and his family.

God finally called “Jack” back to his final, eternal home on April 21, 2023 as he was surrounded by his wife and his girls, telling him how loved he was and that where he was going didn’t mean “goodbye” but “see you later”.
