Betty Jo Page Davis - August 04, 1931 - October 23, 2021

Departed: 10/23/2021 (Orem)
Obituary Preview: Betty Jo Page Davis, born August 4, 1931, died at home peacefully and surrounded with love on October 23, 2021, at the respectable age of 90. She was a rosy-cheeked farm girl from Pleasant Grove, Utah, who could milk cows and drive trucks and bake the world’s best orange rolls. She was also a polyglot globe-trotting adventurer who could fly an airplane, ride a motorcycle, tame wild horses, and domesticate sullen teenagers. She could wail on the saxophone, hold forth on the viola, and astonish on the piano.
She composed poems as gifts and odes as offerings, and the most anticipated moment at every family event was Grandma Betty Jo shyly standing up to read a hilarious and touching original poem scribbled in shorthand on a receipt or the inside of an envelope.
Her fanclub is worldwide. Today, people from Maine to Oregon to Hawaii to Germany are mourning her passing, remembering the infinite ways she delighted in the world.
She still has close friends from her school days in Pleasant Grove. In 1946 she took the Provo Big Band scene by storm and won the heart of the flashiest soloist, a lanky kid named Duane Davis, who was later lucky enough to be married to her. After high school she hopped on a train and moved to Manhattan to work as an orderly at a mental hospital and later to work as a typist in San Francisco. When she was a student at BYU, working in the English department and majoring in English, she braved the Atlantic and went to Europe, and not-so-coincidentally happened to chance upon Elder Davis where he was serving in Germany. Later, she moved all around the country-- Baltimore, Kentucky, Washington, and Utah-- with her growing gaggle of kids.
She was a teacher and a librarian. She taught piano lessons and took in stray teenagers who blossomed under her relentless love and acceptance. She settled down in Orem, Utah and loved her rural property and the horses she kept there. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, playing the organ at concert-caliber, cheerfully embellishing ordinary hymns to harmonic transcendence. She served a proselytizing mission to Germany in 2002, keeping up with sister missionaries five decades her junior. She was an adoring grandma, and traveled all over the world visiting her kids and grandkids.
She was a collector of malapropisms and she delighted in punplay.
She was happy and content anywhere she went-- any hardship she’d wave away with a twinkle-- it wasn’t so bad! She never met a superlative she didn’t like. Every meal was the most delicious, every baby the most precious. She delighted in her family and friends-- she had an x-ray vision gift of seeing through their prickliness or trauma or shyness or resentment to the pure gold of the soul underneath.  Everyone who met her loved her. And she loved everyone, without caveat or judgment. She was true North.
For all her adventuring and the astonishing scope of her experiences and talents and friendships, there wasn’t a jaded or arrogant cell in her body. The terrible tragedies that happened to her didn’t poison her or sharpen her-- they made her even kinder, wiser, and more gentle with the people around her.
Everyone who met her will tell you, laughing, “I was her favorite.” Because when she was with you, you knew it was true. You are her favorite. All of you. And you always will be.
Today she is back in the arms of her dear parents, Bert and Ina, and with her dear daughter Kira, and her son Spencer and grandsons Ian and Matt, granddaughter Sarah, and her dearest friend Frances. She is survived by her sister Margene Page Edwards, who was her first dear friend, and by her children, Mark (Andi), John (Lisa), Steven (Michele), Anne (Alan Barker), Michael (Giselle), Alan (Debra), Jeff (Kara), and Randall (Angela). She is loved forever by her 41 grandkids and 39 great-grands, and by innumerable friends whom she loved and who love her, the way we love the sun. We will continue to grow from her superlative example. She is the kindest, most beautiful, most loving, most generous, smartest, funniest, most gorgeous and best person, literally ever. We won’t say goodbye. We’ll just say, see ya!
A memorial celebration will be held in her honor at 11:00 am, Saturday, October 30, at the Hillcrest 8th Ward Meetinghouse, 1035 South 800 East, Orem, with a viewing prior to the service from 9:30 to 10:30am, and on Friday, October 29, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary, 495 South State Street, Orem.

June Beverly Waite - June 30, 1930 - October 12, 2021

Departed: 10/12/2021 (Orem)
Obituary Preview: June Moncur Waite, 91, passed away on October 12, 2021 at home in Orem, Utah. June was born on June 30, 1930 in Brownsville, Texas to LaPriel Cutler Moncur and Alphonso Moncur, the 5th of 10 children. Her family spent winters in Texas and summers in Lovell, Wyoming, eventually living fulltime on the Little Valley Ranch outside Lovell.
LaPriel played the piano and Alphonso the violin in a dance band, so their children, especially the four girls, learned to sing, play the piano, and dance. The family worked hard on the ranch, raising crops like green beans and  seed radishes, and they grew a marvelous garden. June loved her brothers and sisters, and they all worked hard together to prosper on the ranch.
Before 8th grade, the Moncurs bought a second house in Salt Lake City and spent summers back in Wyoming. June attended East High and then the University of Utah where she discovered her passion for theater. From the time she was a junior in high school to the time she graduated from college, she acted in plays, and she always had a lead part. She also acted in live radio and TV programs. Once she played the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz, and later in life her children and grandchildren delighted in coaxing this sweet woman to let loose her scary cackle.
After graduating from the University of Utah, June did something unusual for a single young woman from Utah in the early 1950s: she moved to New York to pursue an acting career. She was hired as the female lead in the Highfield Theater in Massachusetts for summer theater season, and then in New York her big break came when she won the open audition for the Barter Theater with Rosalind Russell as the judge. She starred in every production for the historic Barter Theater that summer and returned to New York with glowing letters and reviews from the theater owner/producer. After meeting with agents, June looked around her and saw very few happy people and even fewer happy marriages. A lifetime of self-promotion now seemed less appealing, so she packed up and went home.
Her next stop was the University of Southern California where she began a Master’s degree in theater. At the USC Institute of Religion, she met the dashing Merwin Waite, a California native who was back from serving in the navy and a French mission. He had graduated from BYU and was back in Los Angeles starting a teaching career. Merwin was a scholar, a faithful servant of God, a star basketball player, a romantic, and, surprisingly, a violinist. June accompanied Merwin on the piano, and later they accompanied each other to the Salt Lake Temple where they were married in 1955.
While Merwin taught math at Gardena High School in the Los Angeles area, June and Merwin raised their growing family of Delys, Wendy, Brent, Clint, and Steven. Steven had hydrocephalus and severe mental disabilities, and June tenderly cared for this beloved son. He passed away at age 4.
The family moved to Hacienda Heights, California when Merwin taught math at East Los Angeles College. June served in church, drove her children to many activities, and directed plays for youth. Merwin brought June with him to a tax preparer’s training. When Merwin had to drop out because of a calling as bishop, June finished the training and became an ace tax preparer. She excelled at representing her company’s clients at audit boards. Merwin and June spent a year in Rennes, France when Merwin was on a Fulbright exchange.
In 1997, Merwin and June served a French-speaking mission to La Reunion and Madagascar, with June handling the finances for that part of the mission. In 1998, they were called to serve as the president and companion of the Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo Mission. Their mission included DR Congo, Republic of Congo, Cameroon, Central African Republic, and Rwanda. French was everyone’s second language. June helped the women get eyeglasses so they could read better and taught Primary songs for the first time to the Congolese Primary children.
In 2004, they moved to Orem, Utah to be near children and grandchildren who were attending college. Many grandchildren have spent late nights with their grandparents eating ice cream. June contracted lung cancer, but beat it, even though the chemo treatments weakened her for life.
Merwin’s passing in December of 2014 brought a lonelier life for June, but her neighbors, children, and grandchildren cherished her and surrounded her with love, giving back to this loving, elegant, and regal woman.
June is survived by one brother, Kent Moncur; four children: Delys (Phil) Snyder (Salem, UT); Wendy (Bob) Jensen (Mesa, AZ); Brent (Cheryl) Waite (Sandy, UT); and Clint (Shelly) Waite (Parker, CO); 19 grandchildren; as well as, soon, 37 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Merwin, her parents and 8 siblings, and her son Steven.
Her viewing will be at Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary in Orem, UT from 7-9 on October 22. The funeral will be held at the Lakeview 7th Ward, 151 W 1600 S, Orem, UT, on October 23 with a viewing from 9:30-10:30 and the funeral at 11:00. The burial will be in the Orem City Cemetery. After completing his studies Jan immigrated to the U.S. on September 1, 1960.
In 1962 he joined the US Army and served as a Sergeant and interpreter translator in the Division of Civil Affairs while stationed in Augsburg, Germany. During his time in the U.S. Army, he met the love of his life, Irene Joyce Hauber in 1964 and they got married on March 1, 1965 in The Hague, The Netherlands.
Jan continued his education at the University of Hawaii, where he received a Bachelor's Degree in Tropical Agriculture. He later earned a Masters Degree in Environmental Health Science from California State University Fresno. Jan loved learning and continued his studies and received his Ph.D. in Nutrition while working in Saudi Arabia.  He spent most of his life in the San Joaquin Valley of California and retired from the Tulare County Health Department. He lived the last years of his life in the loving care of his wife Irene in Orem, Utah where she faithfully cared for him and was by his side until the end.

Jan never met a stranger. He loved striking up conversations with anyone and everyone, often telling jokes. He also would try to speak the native language of those he met. He loved learning languages, was fluent in many and also enjoyed international travel.
He was especially known for his generosity. Jan would give the shirt off his back to a stranger and on many occasions gave or loaned money to others without expecting to be repaid. He was also generous with his time, often volunteering in church and serving his fellow neighbors.
Jan never let a year go by without planting a garden. He was passionate about growing all kinds of things in his garden. He would spend mornings in the yard, tending to rose bushes, fruit trees, berries, and several different vegetables. He was proud of his work and would often request us to take pictures of the garden.
Most important, Jan had a devotion and love for our gracious, kind and loving God. He truly embodied and lived a Christ-centric life. He was loving, kind, humble, generous and compassionate. Please join us in the joy, peace and gratitude that we all share in celebrating the wonderful life he lived and the legacy he leaves.
