Donna Rae Fike - May 04, 1951 - February 26, 2022

Departed: 02/26/2022 (Inver Grove Heights)
Obituary Preview: Donna Rae Fike, aged 70, passed away peacefully in the presence of her family and caretakers on February 26th, 2022 at her residence in Alexandria, MN. She was born to Earl and Mildred Fike of Fessenden, North Dakota in 1951; the youngest of three sisters. She graduated from Fessenden High School in 1969 and spent her young adult life in North Dakota, Montana, and Colorado. In 1972, Richard & Donna (Fike) Foss had a daughter, Jodi Millicent Foss. Donna’s life was spent as a Jill-of-all-trades, as she started towards a path in nursing, but later worked as a printing press operator, restaurant owner, hotel manager, massage therapist, and hotel reservationist.  She was incredibly resourceful and always managed to make lemonade out of the lemons life dealt her! In 2009, Donna moved to Alexandria, MN to be near her daughter and grandchildren. Her most prized position was that as ‘Nana’! She lived vicariously through playing with her five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, with an amazing ability to lose herself and capture their hearts through imaginative play. She developed a close bond with each of them and will always be remembered for her late-night conversations, Saturday morning coffee rituals, birthday cakes, and made-to-order pies on Thanksgiving!  At her best, Donna was a strong mother, attentive grandmother and great-grandmother, phenomenal cook and baker, thrifter extraordinaire, resourceful handywoman (able to restore just about anything), and faithful friend. Donna brought fun and laughter everywhere she went. She struggled through the loss of her own mother as a teenager and fought valiantly with a lifelong battle with Type 1 Diabetes and legal blindness, never once letting it stop her from seeing the beauty around her. The last four and a half years of Donna’s life were spent in the care of the staff at Woodcrest Assisted Living in Alexandria, Minnesota. Donna always did things in her own way, often against all odds and expectations. The staff there embraced her late-night shenanigans and strong will to maintain independence and loved her through her hardest days as she fought dementia and the effects of her diabetes. They became more like family and supported her through her final days. Donna was an overcomer through the very end, and her faith and hope in Christ helped to propel her from this life to the sweetest of reunions and fellowship that awaits her in Heaven.
Donna is survived by her daughter Jodi (Lloyd) Robertson of Alexandria, MN; her grandchildren Colin (Amanda) Robertson of Ely, MN; Emma Robertson of Fargo, ND; Katy Robertson, Colton Robertson, and Sadie Robertson all of Alexandria, MN; Alexis Messinger-Robertson and her great-granddaughter Aiva Robertson of Minot, ND; and her great-grandson Elliot Hanson of Fargo, ND. Donna was also ‘Nana’ to a sweet angel, Anastasia Robertson, born sleeping in 2018. She is also survived by her two sisters, Lauren Allender (Michael) of Grand Junction, CO; and Shelly Kanwischer of Moorhead, MN.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service is being planned for the summer of 2022 in Donna’s childhood home of Fessenden, ND. Arrangements will be announced once finalized.
The family invites you to share a personal memory of Donna to include with any sympathy cards. If you feel led to include a gift to assist with final expenses or a memorial, it would be greatly appreciated. Cards can be sent directly to the family of Donna Fike. Please e-mail Jodi at rfamileeof7@gmail.com for a mailing address and/or for details preceding the Celebration of Life Memorial Service.
