Martha Fredin - March 31, 1936 - July 28, 2022

Obituary Preview: Martha was born to Gilbert and Helen (Stover) Schmid of Comfrey, on March 31, 1936, at Springfield, MN. She grew up on a farm four miles NW of Comfrey. Martha graduated from St. Paul's Catholic School in 1950 and Comfrey Public High School in 1954. Martha married Norbert Suess on August 31, 1954, at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Comfrey. They made their home in Comfrey and were blessed with six children. Norbert passed away from kidney disease on February 14, 1967. Martha entered the job market and was employed by World Book Encyclopedia, advancing from salesperson to Area and then District Manager. In 1969, Martha was employed part time by the Postal Service. She worked mostly at the Comfrey office as well as helping at other area offices as needed. In October of 1987, Martha became Postmaster of the Sanborn, MN office. In June of 1989, Martha was promoted to the Comfrey Post Office as Postmaster where she worked until her retirement in January of 1998. Martha married Wendell Fredin on March 17, 1970. They were blessed with three children and raised their children on the Fredin family farm near Comfrey. In 2014, they moved to their retirement home in Comfrey. Besides being busy raising her family and job, Martha assisted her husband on the farm, along with their civic commitments. She was very active in St. Paul’s Catholic Church. She was a member of the CCW, St. Ann's Circle, religion teacher, Church Historian for 21 years, and lifetime choir member. She was also very supportive of Comfrey Public School. Martha was a member of the Floratennial Garden Club, District IV MSHS president and historian, Lion's Club, Friends of the Library, Comfrey Area Pride, and St. John’s Lutheran Home board and volunteered where needed. She served as the NUDCCW Historian for 4 years. Martha received the Bishops Medal of Service Award in 1999, for her service in serving meals after the 1998 tornado. Martha enjoyed gardening, bowling, playing Bridge, scrapbooking, reading, and especially time spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Time spent on Long Lake near New London with family was extra special. Martha lost her four-month battle with Glioblastoma Brain Cancer on Thursday, July 28, 2022, at St. John's Lutheran Home in Springfield at the age of 86.Martha is survived by her husband; 9 children, Deb (Bill) Buffington of New London, Tom (Kris) Suess of St. James, Peggy (Larry) Hoffman of Northfield, Bill (Rhonda) Suess of Comfrey, Connie (Chuck) Lingbeek of Hutchinson, Kathy (Charles) Thaemert of Mayer, Rick Fredin (special friend, Heather Schroeder) of New London, Kristy (Derk) Gratton of New London, and Andy (Amy) Fredin of Delano; 20 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren; 10 step great grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy (Tom) Maloney and Marianne (Stanley) Schotzko; along with many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Norbert Suess and her parents, Gilbert and Helen Schmid. In Martha's final days she said, "With all the tragedies I've experienced in life, many blessing have also come."

Alphonse Mathiowetz - July 01, 1933 - June 07, 2022

Obituary Preview: Alphonse Anthony Mathiowetz was born on the family farm in Mulligan Township, Brown County to Florentine and Helen (Hornick) Mathiowetz on July 1, 1933. He attended country school #42 and completed his GED while serving in the Army. Alphonse helped his dad on the farm until he entered the Army in November of 1953. He served most of his time in Japan and then was honorably discharged in 1955. On September 28, 1953, Alphonse was united in marriage to LaDonna Schroepfer at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. September of 1955, when Alphonse was discharged from the Army, the couple moved to a farm in Mulligan Township where they raised their 4 children - Joan, John, Joel, and Julie. Alphonse retired from farming in 1992. He served on the Brown County ASC Board for 9 years, Essig Co-op Board, Brown County Farmer's Union, DFL county board, county commissioners from 1994-1998, Catholic Aid, was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church where he was a lecture since 1963 and served on the Parish Council and PTA of St. Paul's School board. Alphonse was very proud to serve his country and was a member of the Albin Johnson American Legion Post #244.Alphonse died on Tuesday, June 7, 2022, at the Sleepy Eye Medical Center.He is survived by children - John (Cheryl) Mathiowetz of New Ulm, Joel (Terri) Mathiowetz of Comfrey, Julie (Corey) Schmid of Sauk Rapids; 6 grandchildren - Christopher (Chelsey) Mathiowetz, Emily (Kaylee) Mathiowetz, Rachel (Nick) Wagner, Anthony (Becca) Mathiowetz, Annataya (Johnny) Zwack, and Kirby (special friend Megan) Schmid; great grandchildren - Jasper and Avery Wagner, Iris Mathiowetz, Milo Zwack, and Kian Pitt; siblings - Rosella Helget of Springfield, Donald (Marilyn) Mathiowetz of Springfield, Carol (special friend Smokey) Wendland of Sleepy Eye. Leonard "Skip" Berberich - June 27, 1940 - February 01, 2022

Obituary Preview: Leonard “Skip” Berberich, Jr. was born to Leonard and Alma (Baier) Berberich on June 27, 1940 on the family farm in Mulligan Township near Comfrey, MN. He attended country school in Mulligan Township and graduated from Comfrey High School in 1957. In high school, Skip was the football quarterback. Skip served in the US Marines where he did his basic training in Paris Island, SC. He then returned home to farm and milk cows. On December 28, 1961, Leonard was united in marriage to Margaret Hageman at New Ulm Cathedral Church. Skip drove gas truck for Tri-County Co-Op and from 1973-1979 he served as the manager. He then returned to farming and semi-retired in 2012. For over 30 years Skip raised peas and sweet corn for Del Monte. He was generous with his crop to many neighbors and friends. In 2011, Margaret and Skip moved to Comfrey and after Margaret’s death, Skip moved to the Maples in Springfield. Skip loved animals especially pigs, peacocks, horses, chickens, guineas, ducks, and geese. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and loved the time he spent on the farm. Skip was known for his huge smile and a wave to everyone he met. He loved watching sports and especially watching his sons Tim and Tom and grandsons play sports. Skip enjoyed listening to Polka music. He was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church where he served on the council and was a lector for over 40 years, Knights of Columbus, Darfur Sportsman Club, Mulligan Township board, and Albin Johnson American Legion Post #244. Skip was welcomed home by his Savior on Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at the age of 81. Skip loved and left behind his family - Tammy (Jimmy) Jones of Andover, Tim (Lynne) of Sioux Falls, and Tom (Michelle) of Springfield; grandchildren- Cacey (Danny) Barrett, Amanda, Shayna, Sarah, Brett, and Jason; great grandchildren - Sawyer, Kamdon, Shane, and Kalen; sister-in-law Karen Stanley and LaDonna Berberich; and many nieces and nephews. Donald Peterson - July 29, 1955 - November 13, 2021

Obituary Preview: Donald James Peterson was born on July 29, 1955, to James and Irene Peterson in Bismarck, North Dakota. He graduated from Dodge Public High School in 1973. Don received a Precision Machining Technology Degree from North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton, North Dakota. He worked a variety of jobs to find his niche. After receiving a two-year Gunsmithing Degree from Pine City Technical College in Pine City, Minnesota, he worked at Sioux Sporting Goods in Bismarck in the gunsmithing department until it closed. After that he attended Bismarck State College and received a Process Plant Technology Degree. The jobs in Bismarck were scarce, so he decided to come to Minnesota and found a position at the Heartland Corn Products Ethanol Plant by Winthrop. He was employed from 2001-2010. He became a shift lead for two plants and stayed until the second ethanol plant was operational. After that he decided to fulfill his dream to open his own gunsmithing business entitled, “Peterson Gunworks”.
Don married Marilyn (Evers) in 2006 and they adopted Carla (age 7), Ariel (age 5) and Zoe (age 3) in 2007 from Texas Waiting Children. They purchased a duplex in Mankato and remodeled it while living there.
Don was truly a man of strength and faith. He had a sweet, gentle personality and was very creative. Also, a master of many trades. He built a composite deck, landings, and steps, with the family helping, at the Pelican Lake cabin by Glenwood, Minnesota. Also, two 40 foot long retaining walls by the water and one by the walkout. If he didn’t know how to do something, he found information on how to do it.
Reading and collecting books was something he really enjoyed. Among his favorite subjects were faith, mental and physical wellness and gunsmithing. Some of his subscriptions were: Guns and Ammo, American Gunsmithing, and others. He enjoyed dancing and took lessons for swing and disco. Playing cards was always a fun time, especially pinochle with his family. Physical health was a priority to him, which meant eating healthy and exercising daily. Dogs are a “man’s best friend” and Don was no exception for he always had a four-legged friend in tow. His miniature labradoodles loved to go with him. His real passion was hunting, trapping, fishing and the out-of-doors. He is survived by wife, Marilyn Peterson from Comfrey, Minnesota; daughters, Sarah Olsen, from Bismarck, North Dakota; Carla Peterson, Ariel Peterson and Zoe Peterson from Comfrey, Minnesota; sister, Margie Peterson from Bismarck, North Dakota; and grandsons, Isaiah Olsen and Paxten Olsen from Bismarck, North

James Schneider - March 14, 1929 - May 25, 2021

Obituary Preview: Jim was born March 14, 1929 in Comfrey, Minnesota to Grayce and Matthew Schneider. He attended college at St. Thomas as well as the University of Minnesota, graduating in 1954 with a degree in Pharmacy. Jim served in the Army from 1954 to 1956. On September 5, 1954, he was united in marriage to Yvonne Hinrichs from Gurley, Nebraska.
He was blessed with wife Vonnie, three children: Teri {Schneider) Petrie, Kurt and Todd Schneider. He loved his family, friends, and the entire Comfrey community. Jim enjoyed sharing his life with each one of us.
Jim was a loving, kind, and selfless person to his family and community. He loved to spend time fishing, golfing, and hunting with his children and then his grandchildren. Many nights at Games Lake were spent playing cards after a long day of fishing and golfing. Jim was a wonderful mentor, friend and confidant who was dearly loved and respected. He also cherished his career as a pharmacist serving the community.
Jim was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Catholic Church, Lions Club, The American Legion, and Commercial Club. He served as President of the Comfrey EDA and was instrumental in the rebuilding of Comfrey following the tornado of 1998. He also served on the Northwestern Drug Board of Directors, Comfrey Hospital Board of Directors, and the Comfrey People's State Bank Board of Directors.
He is survived by his wife Vonnie, three children: Teri Petrie {John), Kurt {Anne) and Todd {Chelli), nine grandchildren: Vanessa Petrie, Olivia Petrie, Jordan{Schneider) Muller, Nick Schneider, Neil Schneider, Jacob Schneider, Katie Schneider, and Chris Schneider, seven great grandchildren: Maya Daley, Anthony, Owen, Juliana and Helena Muller, Adeline Schneider, and Claire Schneider. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Beverly Larson, and his grandson Dustin Petrie.

Sheldon Schuelke was born on June 11, 1951 in Comfrey, MN, the son of Ewald and Dorothy (Prechel) Schuelke. He graduated from Comfrey High School in 1969. Sheldon drove semi-trucks for 33 years, farmed, and also raised hogs until the tornado. On April 17, 2004, Sheldon was united in marriage to Marlene Beyer. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, talking about farming in his shop, and talking about and riding his Harley Davidson.
He is survived by his wife – Marlene; children – Adam (Jamie) Kopesky, Phil (Ashley) Kopesky, and Christina (Ross) Fischer; 12 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; siblings – LuAnn Augustin, Preston Schuelke, and Colleen Havens; and nieces, nephews, and cousins. Sheldon was preceded in death by his parents and parents-in-law.

Walter Evers - March 18, 1933 - January 10, 2021

Walter Carl Evers was born March 18, 1933 in Cottonwood County to Harm and Bena (Stadtlander) Evers. He grew up working on his family farm in the Comfrey area. Walter then met the love of his life and married Marie Suess on May 10, 1955 at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Comfrey. Together they raised 6 children. Walter continued to farm the Comfrey area until he purchased the Skelly Station in 1963-1991. In 1991 Walt switched careers and became a custodian for the Comfrey School where he retired in 2003. After retirement his love for farming continued and he helped with the fall beet harvest. Walt and his wife Marie enjoyed spending their time together camping, fishing, dancing, and traveling during their 65 years together. Outside of fishing, Walt would be woodworking in his shop and creating new projects. Later in life Walt found joy in his 4 great granddaughters. He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church in Comfrey.
Walter passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife and family on Sunday, January 10, 2021, at the age of 87.
Walter's life will be forever cherished in the lives of his wife Marie; and of his children - Michael Evers (Chris Amsden) of Comfrey, Beverly (Howard) McCabe of Madelia, Linda (Joel) Schiller of Comfrey, Allen (Joan) Evers of Windom, Bradley Evers (Amy Stedman) of Sanborn, Lori (Greg) Krantz of Annandale; 14 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren; and siblings - David (Sharon) Evers of Jeffers, Richard (Susan) Evers of Comfrey, Irene Zimmerman of Comfrey, and Clara Schenk of Butterfield. Ramona Toll - Unknown - January 01, 2021

Obituary Preview: Ramona was born on July 16, 1944 to Louie and Ethel (Olson) Willms of Comfrey. She grew up on a farm outside of Comfrey and graduated from Comfrey Public School. On February 28, 1965 she was united in marriage to Bruce Toll and they bought their one and only home in Comfrey. They were blessed with three children and eight grandchildren. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church (later New Hope Lutheran Church) where she spent many years as a Sunday School teacher and a youth group leader coordinating many Easter Breakfasts, meetings and youth outings. Ramona worked at People’s State Bank for 7 years and once her children were grown, many may have seen her smiling face at Jackpot Junction in the Bingo hall where she worked for 18 years. Ramona also was the local “Avon Lady” for many years, welcoming people into her home at any time. She was a “second mom” to many of the kids in town, always offering a place to stay and making sure they all had a full stomach before they went home. Bruce and Ramona enjoyed spending part of their winters in El Centro, CA. She dedicated her life to her family and loved to spend time with her grandchildren. They meant the world to her. Ramona died January 1, 2021 at Abbott Northwestern hospital surrounded by her loved ones.
She is survived by her husband Bruce of Comfrey, children - Tammy (Jim) Kelly of Comfrey, Wendy (Bob) Schoewe of Lakeville, Troy (Andrea) Toll of Comfrey and 8 grandchildren Karliana (Fiancé Dustin Clement) and Logan Kelly, Dawson and Blake Gode, Lexi, Jordan, Ashton and Elliana Toll; siblings - Betty Windschill of St. James, MaryAnn Paape of Brooklyn Center, Sandra (Alvin) Anderson of Alexandria. Ramona was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Rodney Willms, David Willms, Donald (Donna) Willms; brothers-in-law Bob Windschill and Bill Paape.
Covid-19 rules and regulations will be followed including the use of masks, social distancing and capacity limits.

Brian Peterson - May 14, 1966 - December 22, 2020

Obituary Preview: Brian Peterson age 54, of Kilkenny, MN died on December 22, 2020, at the University of Minnesota Medical Center, West Bank in Minneapolis, MN.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, December 30, 2020, from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the New Hope Lutheran Church in Comfrey, MN. Due to COVID-19, visitation will be a "walk through" visitation to avoid congregating or gathering inside the building. All who attend are required to wear a mask and maintain social distancing guidelines.
Interment will be at the Springfield City Cemetery at a later date.
Brian was born and raised in Comfrey by Carol and LeRoy Peterson. He and his sister Jayna stayed active while growing up on the family’s cattle and pig farm. Brian developed a love of animals at a very young age and was actively involved in 4H activities. After graduating high school, he attended the University of Minnesota and graduated with a degree in applied science. Brian worked one night in a factory and said he left in the morning and never went back. His next career path was learning the art of horse shoeing and the rest is history. Brian has a hobby farm in Kilkenny. He started Brian Peterson Farrier Service and had been actively shoeing horses until he passed away. He had been in the horse industry for 32 years and had a loyal following of customers. Brian was an amazing father to Jake and Katie. He loved life and his work with the horses and all the comradery embracing the equine world. He spent the last several years with the love of his life Julie traveling, horseback riding, and living life to the fullest.
Brian is survived by his children, Jake (Sarah), Katie (Austin), father LeRoy (Marty), sister, Jayna (Richard), nieces and nephews and his beloved partner, Julie. He is preceded in death by his mother, Carol and grandparents.
Brian was very witty and made the world a warmer place with his big smile and adoring brown eyes. His laughter lives on in his son Jake. Ride on cowboy. We have no doubt the heavenly doors opened up for you and your mom greeted you at the door. We love you so much and miss you terribly.

Dorothy Schuelke - April 16, 1928 - November 14, 2020

Dorothy Katharine (Prechel) Schuelke, age 92, of Comfrey, MN passed away Saturday, November 14, 2020. Dorothy was born on April 16, 1928 in Burnstown Township to Edna (Winkelmann) and George Prechel. Dorothy was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Springfield, MN and was a graduate of Springfield High School. In 1949, Dorothy married her best friend, Ewald Schuelke of Comfrey, MN at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Springfield. Dorothy and Ewald made their home southwest of Comfrey where they lived and worked together for 64 years. She became a member of Salem Lutheran Church, being organist for a time, and New Hope Lutheran Church in Comfrey. They were blessed with 4 children.
Dorothy worked as a legal secretary for a local attorney and then, for many years, at Farmer’s and Merchant’s State Bank. She also helped with the farming, in early years not hesitating when she took lunch out to the field, to drive the cornpicker a round or two while Ewald ate. Dorothy enjoyed playing piano to accompany Ewald’s harmonica tunes, dancing to polka music, visiting with neighbors, taking little trips to visit family and friends, trips out West, and having special tenting campouts with the grandchildren. She loved having her children and grandchildren around and celebrating special events with them. She used her love of picture taking to keep all the memories alive. She also loved to crochet and sew for others.
Dorothy is survived by her children: Sheldon (Marlene) Schuelke, LuAnn Augustin, Preston Schuelke, and Colleen Havens; grandchildren: Justin Augustin (Laura), Joshua Augustin, Heather (Marco) Duarte, Tracy Schuelke, Lindsey Bade (Alex), Mackenzie Bade, and Mickaylie Bade; great-grandchildren: Eric and Carmen Duarte; step-grandchildren: Adam Kopesky, Christina (Ross) Fischer; step-great grandchildren; nieces and nephews; special friends Dale Augustin, Jasmine Gordon, and Rich Havens; sisters-in-law: Carla Schuelke of Kewasku, WI and Delores Schuelke, also of WI.

Obituary Preview: Kenneth L. Savage, of Mora, Minnesota, and winter address of Florence, Arizona, passed away of natural causes at his winter home in Arizona on November 11, 2020. He was born in Cottonwood County on September 10, 1933, and attended Catholic grade school and Comfrey High School, graduating in 1953. He enlisted in the Army and upon his return to the States from Germany, started his career with Western Electric in St. Paul. The company went through many changes, and he retired from Lucent Technologies in 1991.
He leaves behind his wife of 63 years, Marvo (Berg); three sons: Jay (Kate), Kirk and Eric (Patricia); five grandchildren: Jana (Cody) Garmaker, Zachery Savage, Courtney (Jake) Archambeau, Jacob Savage and Katie Savage; and two great-grandchildren: Parker and Michael Garmaker. He is also survived by Douglas (Esther) Savage, Patricia (John) Roloff, Thomas (Coleen) Savage, Virginia (Gene) Veerkamp, David (Lesa) Savage, Mary Jo (Steele) Propp; sisters-in-law: Myrtle and Harriet; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph F. and Beulah (Tuttle), Doris (Weinberger); brothers and sisters-in-law: Bernard (Barbara), Joseph (Phyllis), John, Gregory, Larry, Michael (MaryAnn) and Roger.

Chuck was born April 11, 1933, on a farm near St. James to Gloyd Sr. and Lena (Kintzi) Wellman. He attended grade school in Watonwan and Cottonwood county country schools. As a youngster his family moved to a farm near Mt. Lake, where he graduated from high school in 1951. He was drafted in 1953 and served 2 years in the U.S. Army at Fort Lewis, WA. Chuck worked on his parents’ farm until he married Alice Mathiowetz February 12, 1957. They farmed first at Lewisville, MN, and then settled on a farm in the Darfur / Comfrey area. In addition to raising 4 children and farming, he and Alice owned and operated a livestock trucking business for many years. In 2019, Chuck and Alice moved to a senior living apartment in Apple Valley, MN. Chuck loved working with livestock. Country music was a constant in the home. Softball with the kids, years of training horses and riding with the kids and grandkids, gave him pure joy. Chuck was involved in the community with church, school, and agriculture.

Obituary Preview: Elaine Clarian Sorensen age 96, of Comfrey, MN died on February 9, 2020, at Sleepy Eye Care Center in Sleepy Eye, MN.
Elaine was the eldest daughter of Christ and Emma Odegard; was baptized, confirmed and married in Albion Lutheran Church, rural St. James. She and her sister Delphine, married the Sorensen brothers, Marvin and Ivan, in a double ceremony on November 21st 1945. They were the parents of one daughter, Vicki (John) Serna of Comfrey.
Elaine loved living on the farm by Darfur and readily worked in the farming operation. She held only one job outside the home for a short time at Butterfield Foods. She loved to bake, dance, cook and entertain friends and family.
Her grandchildren, Grant and J.Ryan were good consumers of her hundreds of cookies. They were 7 and 4 years old when they came from Florida to live on the farm, and Grandma adored them.
She is survived by her daughter - Vicki and John Serna, Comfrey; grandchildren - Grant and Andrea Serna, Hermosa, SD and J.Ryan and Crystal and their children - Lily and Jacob Serna of Baltic, SD; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin (Sam) Sorensen, her sister Delphine and her husband Ivan “Fat” Sorensen and infant sister, Lolita.

Don started farming with his brother Kenny and his father, then later farmed on his own. He also was a seed corn dealer. Don was a member of the Albin Johnson American Legion, DAV, National Farmer’s Organization where he served 9 years and treasurer and 9 years as a director, and 4H as a child. He participated in the National Corn Picking Contest where he placed 2nd. Don was a former member of Faith Lutheran Church and current member of New Hope Lutheran Church. He enjoyed baseball, tractor pulls, playing cards, snow blowing, listening and dancing to polka music, traveling. Don loved time with his family, farming, eating pie, ice cream, and strawberry shakes. He greatly enjoyed spending time uptown having coffee and socializing.
He is survived by his wife Joyce of Comfrey; children - Ramona (Jim) Widmer of New Ulm, Debra (Burt) Manz of Park Rapids, David (Nancy) Wiese of New Ulm; grandchildren - Adam (Maddison) Manz, Donald Manz, Shaina Widmer, Breanna Widmer, Jim (Michele) Widmer Jr., Melanie Meinert (fiancé Jeremy Braun); great grandchildren - Corbin, Jasmine, Hailey, and Anden; brother Kenny (Mary) Wiese of Comfrey; sisters - Betty Jane Wiese of Comfrey and Rita Sell of Windom; and many nieces and nephews. She grew up on a farm in Stately Township and attended country school District #81 and graduated from Comfrey High School. From 1951-1953, Marlene worked as a clerk at Schneider Drug Store in Comfrey. On January 19, 1954, Marlene was united in marriage to Wilfred Rathman at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Comfrey. The couple farmed near Comfrey where they raised their 5 children. She was known for providing wonderful meals. Marlene lost her left arm in a farming accident, but the loss of her arm never slowed her down or deterred her from her daily activities. Five years ago, Marlene became a resident at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield and thoroughly enjoyed her time there. She enjoyed all the activities, including church services and playing cards. Marlene enjoyed gardening, canning, traveling, and rides around the area. Her greatest cherished moments were spending time with her family.

Obituary Preview: Roman was born February 28, 1922 in Mulligan Township to Frank and Louisa (Schroepfer) Zwaschka. He attended District 76 Country School and St. Paul’s Catholic School. Roman worked on the family farm until he was drafted in the army in 1942. Roman served in the 91st Infantry Division, 363rd Regiment of Rome- Arno, fighting in North Africa and Italy. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his service. Roman was discharged in 1945. On April 29, 1946, Roman married Dolores (Suess). Together they had three daughters, Joanne, Judy and Janice. Dolores passed away August 12, 1962.
On February 13, 1965, Roman married Elizabeth (Betty) Eischen and they had two sons, Dennis and James. Roman retired at the age of 75 from farming, yet continued living on the family farm until December of 2015 when he and Betty moved to Comfrey. Roman belonged to the South-Central Cattlemen’s Association, Catholic United Financial, St Paul’s Society, American Legion Post 244 and the Adrian township board. He enjoyed driving the township motor grader for years and volunteered whenever needed after retirement. Roman enjoyed dancing, playing cards, dice with friends and especially going to Army reunions all over the United States to catch up with friends from his time in the service. Roman was a proud Catholic, farmer, community member and WWII veteran. Roman deeply loved his country and the freedom he fought for, but most of all he was proud of his family telling us frequently “Freedom is not free”.
Roman George Zwaschka, age 97, of Comfrey, passed away peacefully November 24, 2019 at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield MN.
Roman is survived by spouse Betty; his children Joanne (Glen) Junker, St. James, Judy Augustin, Comfrey, Janice Pederson, Richfield, Dennis (Susan), Bloomington, James (Tami), of North Mankato; grandchildren Lana (Mike), Gina (Scott), Kurt (Jolee), Beth (Jake), Keith (Kathy), Wendy (Tom), Tom, Jonathan, Olivia, Alex and Isabel; fifteen great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren; brother Melvin, Old Main Village Mankato; sister-in-law Agnes Zwaschka; many other relatives and nieces and nephews. Rosemary married James Dean Rathman April 23, 1957 and lived on several farms outside Comfrey.
Rosemary was a gifted horticulturalist growing beautiful gladiolas, oriental lilies, tulips and other florals. She shared her talent by providing beautiful floral arrangements weekly to several churches and senior facilities in Comfrey and Sleepy Eye.
In addition to all the flowers, Rosemary grew strawberries and raspberries which she made into Jelly and Jams and donated to many of the church dinners and homes.
Any friends that would stop by would never leave empty handed as she almost always gave them flowers, fresh raspberries or strawberries to enjoy.
During the Summer Rosemary and Jim spent time at Lake Kandiyohi and loved it when family or friends stopped by to visit. She would also use this time to relax and read a good book as she was a prolific reader.
Rosemary is survived by her husband, James and children Gerard Rathman and Daughter-in-Law Joy Rathman of Comfrey, Danette Lincoln and Son-in-Law, Sayed Alzaman of Ham Lake and Deborah Rathman and Son-in-Law Kenneth Rivera of Saint Paul.
She was blessed with ten grandchildren: Brandon Rathman, Ryann Kaim, Jordan Kuelbs (children of Gerard and Joy Rathman); Jessamine Warneke, David Lincoln, Melinda Boss, Steven Lincoln, Samirha Attree (children of Danette Lincoln and Sayed Alzaman) and Maya Rivera and Serafina Rivera (children of Deborah Rathman and Kenneth Rivera). She also has 15 great grandchildren.
Her surviving brother,Reinold Mathiowetz and Sister-in-law Connie Mathiowetz of Marshall, MN, Sister-in-law Marylou Mathiowetz of Leavenworth, MN, Sister-in-law Aleda Mathiowetz of Saint Paul, MN and Brother-in-law Richard Rathman and Sister in law Betty Rathman of Albert Lea, MN.

After his return, he was united in marriage to Marian Helget on April 9, 1947, at St. Mary’s Church in Sleepy Eye. He lived in the Comfrey area his whole life where he farmed. Valentine was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Men’s Society, and cemetery board. He also was a member of the American Legion. Valentine enjoyed playing cards, fishing, Sunday drives with Marian, and afternoon coffee with the guys. Valentine and Marian enjoyed family fishing trips to Breezy Point as well as traveling to Mexico and Hawaii.
Valentine died peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, November 3, 2019, in Mankato, MN at the age of 98.

They obtained the Chevrolet dealership which was known as Wiese Chevrolet. Sonny was proud to sell the Chevrolet brand for 52 years. He was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church and the American Legion. Sonny enjoyed hunting, fishing, and trap shooting.
Walter died on Friday, October 4, 2019, at Gil Mor Manor in Morgan at the age of 92.
He is survived by his daughters - Bonnie (Charles) Schleif of Comfrey and Mary Beth (Dale) Mathiowetz of Grand Chute, WI; grandchildren - Jason Schleif (special friend Jamie Olson), Nathan Schleif, Nicholas Schleif, Christa (Heath) Krick, Kate (Brandon) Bretl, Josh (Tiffany) Mathiowetz, and Megan Mathiowetz (special friend Joe Dubovik); and 6 great grandchildren. Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, wife Marion, sister Lucille U'Ren, and great grandchild Cameron Bretl.

Floyd Bowman - May 03, 1931 - September 18, 2019

Obituary Preview: Floyd Leroy Bowman was born on May 3, 1931 in Bashaw Township of Brown County to Elmer and Alma (Rapp) Bowman. The youngest of six children. He attended District #59 country school. Floyd served in the U.S Army from February 1952 to January 1954. Spending 18 months of his enlistment in Germany. He returned home and joined his oldest brother Elmo on the family farm, four miles north of Comfrey. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, and spent many years trap shooting at the Sleepy Eye Sportsmen’s Club, and was a long standing member of the Darfur Sportsmen’s Club. Floyd was also a “Corn Husking” champion for his age class in 1996. Floyd and Elmo were dairy farmers (Holstein Cows), until their retirement from that part of farming in 1987. They continued crop farming and raising beef cattle, for a number of years afterwards. Floyd was the Funny Uncle, and not so serious. He liked to joke around. He liked his land, and what he did to help the wildlife. He was proud of the wildlife on his land. Floyd was a powerful influence on his nieces and nephews. A fine example of hard work, honesty and humility. He was a long time member of the Albin Johnson American Legion Post #244 of Comfrey and a lifetime member of New Hope Lutheran Church, formerly Faith Lutheran Church, in Comfrey.
Floyd died on Wednesday, September 18, 2019, at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield at the age of 88.

LeRoy "Swede" Walters - May 01, 1931 - August 15, 2019

Obituary Preview: LeRoy Duane, son of Tena (Schafer) and Theodore Walters, was born on May 1, 1931 in Mt. Lake, MN where he grew up, only spending a couple of those years in Iowa. Swede worked for Les Hageman in 1948 and for John Valentine in 1949 until joining the service on May 8, 1952. He was honorably discharged from the Army on June 24, 1953. He married Marjorie Pauline Prechel, September 11, 1954 at Salem Lutheran Church, Comfrey. Ditch-digging construction work followed through 1958 and then on to full service station work on Highway 258, Comfrey, through 1962. His mechanic skills were appreciated at the Ford Garage in Comfrey until he returned to the service station in 1969. In 1984, he purchased the Mobil Full Service Gas/Repair Station. On May 1, 2002, he locked the door one last time and retired.
LeRoy took time to give back to the surrounding area as volunteer for Comfrey Hospital Days, a member of the Comfrey Volunteer Fire Department for 23 years, usher and member of and served on board of Salem Lutheran Church, member of New Hope Lutheran Church, served on St. John Lutheran Home Board of Directors, 1999 Trustee of the Year, Springfield, MN and member of Comfrey American Legion Post #244.
He enjoyed his retirement spending time at Ashby Resort on Pelican Lake with family and at Lake Florida (near Willmar) with special friend, Donna Hustad. Handy with a hammer, nails and paintbrush, the existing cabin, at Lake Florida, was given a facelift. Boating, fishing and just enjoying what nature had to offer each day, accompanied by many cups of coffee and conversation, filled him with delight. An occasional bus tour added to his list of life's adventures and list of life's acquaintances.
The support and friendship of Comfrey remembered him as he moved to Granite Ridge Senior Living, Granite Falls, MN in April, 2018. An additional move to Granite Falls Care Center, Granite Falls, MN in October 2018 provided him a new community of support and friendship.
Swede is survived by children; Kim (Jon) Anderson of Ortonville, MN; Kathy (Cletus) Hillesheim of Sanborn, MN; Daniel (Sheryl) Walters of Granite Falls, MN; Dana (Pat) Walters of Coon Rapids, MN; special friend, Donna Hustad of Granite Falls, MN; 9 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; brothers; Eugene Walters of Mapleton, MN; Bill Walters of Fort Worth, Texas; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; step-mom, Helen; his wife, Marjorie in 2000; sister, Marcella Dunlavey; brothers, Lawrence, Stanley and Dennis; half-sister, Wyona Balek; half-brothers, Harold Schulte and Norman Schulte.

Obituary Preview: Ivan Stanley Elg was born on June 13, 1930, to Floyd and Adabelle (Rask) Elg in Selma Township, Cottonwood County, MN. He was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Comfrey, MN. He graduated from Comfrey Public School in 1948. In 1952, Ivan was drafted into the United States Army serving during the Korean War. He spent 14 months with the Corp of Engineers at Pusan Korea. When he returned home, he owned and operated the Darfur Farm Store. He married Ione Johnson at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Darfur on November 5, 1955. Ivan’s love for the land and farming overcame the business future and he moved his family to the country. He began farming in Adrian Township, Watonwan County in 1967. Ivan farmed until his retirement in 1993 and moved to Comfrey in 2009. Ivan was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Darfur and a life member of the VFW in St. James and American Legion in Darfur and Comfrey. Ivan enjoyed fishing, boating, and camping with his family, as well as attending church and school programs and sporting events. He also enjoyed restoring antique tractors and watching the MN Twins.
Ivan died on Thursday, July 11, 2019, at Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm, MN, at the age of 89.

The couple was blessed with five children. Marvin continued to farm in the Darfur area raising his family. Marvin & Bernice moved to Sveadahl in 1985 and still lived there until his passing. He also worked for Darfur Implement, Darfur Tri County and Miller Sellner in Bingham Lake until he retired. Marvin was a member of the KC's and the Jaycee's in Sleepy Eye. He enjoyed coaching girls softball, making wood crafts, mowing, and tinkering in the garage. He was an avid Twins fan. Marvin loved watching his grandkids playing sports. He was a very dedicated family man and cherished times they could be together.
Marvin passed away peacefully with his family by his side at the Sleepy Eye Medical Center.
