Obituary Preview: Jerry L. Evers was born December 12, 1942, in Selma Township, the son of Henry and Ruth (Newberg) Evers.  Following high school, Jerry entered the National Guard and served until 1968.  Jerry was united in marriage to Janice Green on July 14, 1962 at the Christian Reformed Church in rural Mountain Lake.  Jerry had a life of entrepreneurship and worked various jobs as a loan officer, in banking and insurance, and raising livestock.  He served on the Comfrey School Board for several terms.  In 1982, Jerry started County Line Feed and Seed which became County Line Feed and Grain growing into a multifaceted business.  Jerry enjoyed raising livestock and farming.  On July 4 he captured pictures of his crops every year.  His greatest enjoyment was his grandchildren.

Jerry died on Monday, May 13, 2024, at the Windom Area Hospital at the age of 81.

He is survived by his wife -  Janice of Comfrey; children - Tim (Rachel) Evers of Comfrey, Susan Krcil (Mike Stoesz) of Mountain Lake, and Jill (Jeff) Veerkamp of Comfrey; grandchildren - Andy (Dakotah) Evers, Jessica (Cody) Madsen, Tyler (Lacey) Evers, Tate Krcil (Hannah VanPelt), Keirstyn Krcil, Erin Veerkamp, Adam Veerkamp, and Owen Veerkamp; 7 great grandchildren; siblings - Jim Evers, Donald (Karen) Evers, Darold (Mary) Evers, and Phyllis (Allen) Hulzebos; and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, son Paul, and brothers and sisters-in-law.

Obituary Preview: Leon Edward Haala, son of Leonard and Beatrice (Hillesheim) Haala, was born September 18, 1945, in Sleepy Eye, MN. He grew up on a farm about one mile north of Comfrey. Leon attended St. Paul's Catholic School through 8th grade and then continued at Comfrey Public School graduating in 1963.

Leon served in the Navy from 1964-1968, stationed primarily in San Diego, CA. After his time in the service, he moved to Mankato and worked as a purchasing agent at Year-Round Cab and Hiniker. Leon then moved to Sherburn, MN and was general manager at Eagle Engineering.

On April 16, 1977, he married Cheryl Fontaine, who was his secretary. They lived in Sherburn for several years, then moved to Elk River, MN. In 1994, they purchased the hardware store in Comfrey, and he was also a school bus driver. After selling the hardware store, Leon was a custodian at Comfrey School until 2010.  Leon and Cheryl moved to Springfield for 10 years and then returned to Comfrey.

Leon loved fishing, staying at resorts, camping, watching football and baseball, and visiting with people.

He is survived by his wife Cheryl, daughter Tamera (Nick) Berning, grandchildren Andy (Katie) Berning, and Amy (Marcus) Benoit; great-grandchildren Jeremiah, Carly, Ella, Wyatt, and Joe Berning; sister Patti (Norbert) Wenisch, aunt Donna Mae (Donald) Schneider, and many nieces and nephews. Leon was preceded in death by his parents, brother Bruce Haala, nephew Brian Wenisch, and many aunts and uncles.

Leon loved life in Comfrey, had a very kind personality, and many good friends. He will be greatly missed.

Wendell A Fredin - October 21, 1936 - June 28, 2023

Obituary Preview: Wendell Alphons Fredin was born on October 21, 1936, to Milton and Lena (Ibeling) Fredin in Mountain Lake, MN. He lived on the family farm south of Comfrey for most of his life. Wendell graduated from Comfrey Public School in 1954. He joined the National Guard in 1959 and was a member for eight years while continuing to farm with his father. Wendell purchased the family farm when his father retired. On March 17, 1970, Wendell married Martha Schmid Suess. They were blessed with three children, whom they raised on the family farm along with six young stepchildren. In 1990, Wendell started working as a sub-rural mail carrier for the St. James Post Office. He then worked at the Springfield Post Office starting in 1998 where he delivered a Springfield-Sanborn route for 12 years. With the help of his stepson Bill, Wendell was able to keep farming until the age of 84. Wendell was very active in many civic organizations. He served on the Comfrey School Board for 23 years, including many years as chairman. Wendell earned many awards for his dedication, including the National School Board Association's Distinguished Service award for his work rebuilding the school after the 1998 tornado. He served on the Comfrey Development Board for 30 years, as Selma Township Treasurer for 30 years, and on the Faith (New Hope) cemetery board for more than 40 years. He also spent time serving as a board member of Faith Lutheran Church. Wendell belonged to the National, State, and Cottonwood Cattlemen's Associations. In 1983, he received the Recruiter of the Year award from the National Cattlemen's Association and in 1985 the Beefman of the Year at the Beef Royale. Wendell was proud to be from Comfrey. He loved supporting all Comfrey athletics and served as a representative to the Minnesota State High School League. He was on its priority list for state basketball tournaments and attended the state boys' basketball tournament nearly every year since 1953, including on his honeymoon.

Wendell died on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, at his assisted living home The Maples in Springfield at the age of 86. With his death, a great historian was lost. His ability to remember people, events, and information was amazing.

Wendell is survived by his three children, Rick Fredin (special friend, Heather Schroeder), Kristy (Derk) Gratton, and Andy (Amy) Fredin; stepchildren Deb (Bill) Buffington, Tom (Kris) Suess, Peggy (Larry) Hoffman, Bill (Rhonda) Suess, Connie (Chuck) Lingbeek, Kathy (Charles) Thaemert; six grandchildren; 19 step-grandchildren; and 23 step-great grandchildren; brother Norman (Joyce) Fredin and sister-in-law Marian K. Fredin.He was preceded in death by Martha in July 2022, his parents, and brothers Kenneth (Joe) and James Fredin and sister-in-law Marian A. Fredin.

Kevin's occupation was HVAC maintenance for the State of Minnesota for 28 years. Kevin was retired and spent his last year's enjoying life on the farm in St James.

His presence was very well known in any room he entered and will be deeply missed by his best friend and loving wife Joann, his family and his friends. No service has been scheduled at this time.
