There are probably few left around who can testify to the great and positive influence of Lee Ross. That’s what happens when you nearly reach 102. She had a colorful life, mostly in a forgotten part of a small, prairie town in southwest Minnesota, where her hope and encouragement of others helped to overcome an almost overwhelmingly despairing conservatism.
She was born in Nicollet County, March 11, 1922, to a powerful but impoverished family, the Havemeiers of the New Ulm area.  Her parents were Albert and Alma, from Courtland.  She was the eldest daughter of nine children; her sister, Helen, surviving.  For years, she lied about her age, especially as she wanted to go to school. To do so, she lodged with others, and eventually graduated from an early University of Minnesota program in microbiology.
After a stint working for the Department of the Navy’s Intelligence unit in Seattle  in 1944, as a civilian (recognized as a Rosie Riveter in 2019), where she had moved to marry Donald Ross, who was stationed there as a pilot for the US Naval Air Corp, they returned back together to Mt. Lake Minnesota, had three children (Jane, Robert, Andrew) and went to work at a local doctor’s office. She had a thirty-year relationship with medical practice in that small town, while designing several local area medical labs, working long hours and dispensing cheerfulness and hope to hundreds of souls.
She was active as a Sunday School teacher at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Mt. Lake, designing and using puppets and felt boards to illustrate stories she interpreted in her own unique way. She was a Boy and Girl Scout Den mother, did stints as a local comedienne, and started her own clinic, Wholesome Data Resource, where she designed health equipment (The Swedish Body Bender), provided health and wellness counseling and sold a series of early computer medical diagnostic systems she designed.  She had a wealth of close friends.
When her eyesight began to fail her in her early 90s, she retired and devoted the rest of her life to efforts to care for her husband, Don, and to raise the spirits of anyone and everyone around her. She spent the last few years living at her son and daughter-in-law’s home in Cheboygan, Michigan, where she fretted over her inability to do more;  she was the joy of children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and everyone she met or talked to on the phone (a constant activity, especially with her daughter, Jane, and her nephew, David).  She died in her sleep the morning of December 6, 2023, having never been in pain, but with a heart that had finished working.
She leaves behind a legacy of good works, three old children, 11 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 3 great- great grandchildren and a throng of humans who are better for having met her.
Any donations or gifts in her name should be directed to the Cheboygan Opera House in Cheboygan, Michigan, where she was an avid supporter.

Richard Dale Krueger - February 29, 1968 - August 23, 2023

Departed: 08/23/2023 (Mtn. Lake)
Obituary Preview: On the dawn of August 23, 2023, the Lord called Richard Dale Krueger home. Richard was born on February 29, 1968, in Lakefield, Minnesota to David and Theresa (Whisney) Krueger. He was baptized and confirmed in Windom, Minnesota, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Richard graduated from Windom High School in 1986, where he created and nurtured lifelong friendships.
Richard married Babe (Vickie Ringham), the love of his life, on August 8, 1992, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Their union was blessed with three children; Dylan, Lance, and Harlie, whom he always called his princess.
There were many things Richard loved. He loved time with family and friends, spirited debates, the loyalty and strength of Rottweilers, motorcycle rides where he could feel freedom as the wind rushed by him, and time in nature. Richard was an avid hunter and spent many years at ‘deer camp,’ where he was the life of the party and boisterous narrator of historic hunts from the past.  Above all, Richard loved his family and spent many moments guiding them, nurturing them, and creating memories to last a lifetime. He instilled a strong work ethic in his children and cherished each one.
Friendship was essential in Richard’s life, and those within his circle were highly conscious of how loyal, kind, accepting, and protective he was to those he called a friend. Richard was a hard worker and took pride in everything he did. He found comfort in knowing his family was provided for and was always willing to supply the muscle in any project.  Richard was not only strong in stature; he was also strong in his faith in God. He had a soft, kind, and loving heart apparent to all those around him. He was humble and believed God guided him from the beginning of his life to the end.
Richard is survived by his wife Babe; children, Dylan of Rochester, MN, Lance, and Harlie; his mother Theresa, of Windom, MN; sisters, Susan (Mel Ludvigson) of Windom, MN,Teresa (Todd Hines) of Windom, MN; brothers, David (Tonja) of Windom, MN,  Robert (Angela) of St. Peter, MN; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his father, David.
In honor of Richard’s memory, he would want those who loved him to tell lively stories of memories with him, take a long ride on a motorcycle, play with a beloved pet, debate on something important to you, and enjoy both the dusk and the dawn. Richard left an enormous void in the lives of many and will be deeply missed.
Blessed be his memory.

Charles Harder - June 19, 1950 - August 22, 2023

Departed: 08/22/2023 (Mountain Lake)
Obituary Preview: Charles Kenneth Harder, age 73, of Mountain Lake, MN, passed away on August 22, 2023, at Laurels Peak Rehabilitation Center in Mankato, MN after experiencing another hemorrhagic stroke. He had been receiving short term rehabilitation at Laurels Peak since June 30 following a hemorrhagic stroke in early June.
Charles was born on June 19, 1950, to Leo and Ruth (Burkhard) Harder in Mountain Lake, MN. After his mother, Ruth, died when he was in the second grade, Charles went to live with his uncle Albert and aunt Bessie’s family for almost two years. When his father, Leo, married Gladys E. Harder in 1959 he returned to living at home with them and his siblings.
He attended kindergarten at the Mountain Lake Elementary School, then he completed Grades 1-6 at the Christian Day School in Mountain Lake, followed by Grades 7-12 in Mountain Lake Public Schools. He was baptized into church membership by Pastor Alvin Kleinsasser in 1966 at First Mennonite Church in Mountain Lake. He graduated from Mountain Lake High School in 1968.
During his teens, he was an active participant in both high school and community choral productions, and he became an accomplished pipe organist. He often played the pipe organ for the Sunday service at First Mennonite.
Following high school he attended Bethel College in North Newton, KS for two years and then transferred to St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN, graduating in 1972. He later obtained a Master of Music degree in choral music from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and completed additional coursework in the Doctor of Music Education program, also at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
Charles was a professional musician and music educator. He was a church organist at several churches in Mankato and the Twin Cities over the years, as well as a choral conductor, and he sang bass with several well-known choral ensembles, including the St. Olaf Choir and the Dale Warland Singers. He taught music and was the choral conductor of the high school choir and ensembles at several high schools, including in Lake Crystal, MN, Aurora, IL, and Inver Grove Heights, MN. To reach students earlier in their education, he transitioned later in his career to teaching music to middle schoolers in Inver Grove Heights. After he retired in 2006, he moved back to Mountain Lake.
He enjoyed the outdoors and over many summers he sailed his 36-foot sailboat on Lake Superior. He liked bicycling on rural roads and bike trails and made numerous trips to central Wisconsin. He also enjoyed doing field work and harvesting his brother Gordon’s fields of corn and soybeans. During his retirement he traveled extensively in the U.S., visiting his many friends and enjoying the natural beauty in a variety of areas. He also enjoyed spending winters in France and more recently in Mexico.
Charles was also a skilled organ craftsman. He purchased a pipe organ from a Lutheran church in Newark, NJ, dismantled it, and drove a U-Haul containing the organ parts to his home in Mountain Lake where he reassembled the organ in a space in his house he built specifically for the organ, one of the largest in-home pipe organs in the State of Minnesota.
Charles was a generous and genuinely nice person with a healthy sense of humor. He was resilient and made an amazing recovery following his first hemorrhagic stroke in 2012. He will be missed.
He is survived by his siblings, Gordon (Eva Toews), Lois, Kathleen (Merin Kouay), and Mary (Wes Mark); three nephews, Willmar (Hannah Neufeld), Jordan (Lindsey Edwards), and David (Rachel Byler); three nieces, Elisabeth (Ramont Schrock), Annie (Derek Reese), and Sophia; seven grandnephews, Elias, Amos, Reuben, Jonathan, Andrew, Camden, and Devin; three grandnieces, Anna, Maria, and Annelise; an uncle, Leslie Harder (Gladys Ann Baerg); numerous cousins; and his many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 3 pm on Sunday, September 3, 2023, at Bethel Mennonite Church in Mountain Lake. Visitation will occur at the church from 2-3 pm, prior to the service.
