FATHER CARL ROOS - Unknown - April 03, 2022

Departed: 04/03/2022 (Indianapolis)
Obituary Preview: The Reverend Carl Anthony Roos March 31, 21942 – April 3, 2022
Eighty years ago, in the small, rural town of Celestine, Indiana, Carl was born at home.  Carl was the seventh of eight children, born to Veronica Magdalene (Schnell) Roos and Harry Peter Roos. The burgeoning family lived simply, worked hard, played a lot of ball, fished for blue gill, hiked country roads, hunted ginseng, sang songs, and danced the fröliche!  The Roos family moved to Jasper. Carl was sure to go to Holy Communion every day before school started. After eighth grade, Carl entered St. Meinrad Seminary for high school and college. He earned a little spending money by delivering newspapers, and by working on his sister’s and brother-in-law’s farm during the summers. Carl loved playing team sports.  As a youth, he played Little League baseball.  In high school and college, he played intermural sports at St. Meinrad. Carl had a reputation as a fierce competitor on the basketball court, football field, and softball diamond.  He competed in top-level league play in both basketball, and softball.  He would greet people on the street, and they would recount stories of The Padre’s winning home runs.  Carl would smile with a twinkle in his eye, then remind them about all of his pop-ups in the same game! A newspaper staff reporter wrote, “Father Carl Roos admits that when it comes to his hitting exploits, even he has trouble separating fact from legend.”
Carl pondered his vocation.  One night while taking a walk, he decided that there was no better purpose than to serve God’s people.  He completed his graduate studies in Theology at the Canisianum, Innsbruck, Austria.  Carl was ordained to priesthood in 1968.  He served in the Catholic Diocese of Evansville for over 19 years as priest, pastor, and teacher in various                    parishes, Rivet High School, and at the University of Evansville.
Carl was a Chaplain and officer in the Army National Guard.  He completed 13 years of service and held the rank of Major.
Carl was a life-long learner.  He continued his education at Indiana University, earning post-graduate degrees in Adult Education and Counseling.  Carl completed another post-graduate certificate in Anglican Studies at Seabury-Western Theological Seminary.
Carl believed that marriage and priesthood were not mutually exclusive and could in fact complement each other. His friendship with Michelle deepened, and they married in 1987. Over these 35+ years, their marriage became sacrament, a humble sign of the Kingdom of God that Jesus describes as “the pearl of great price”. Their son, Carl Peter, was born in 1997. Big C passionately cheered on his young son in five consecutive seasons of Cub League Baseball!  Over these 25 years, they share a mutual love of travel (especially riding by train), and music. Father Carl’s ordination was received in the Episcopal Church in 1990. He served 16 years as parish priest in the Diocese of Indianapolis, and the Diocese of Nebraska.  He retired from active ministry in 2006. After retirement, Carl’s great pleasure was playing golf with his brothers at courses across southern Indiana. Most recently, his past-time was tongue-in-cheek sports and political commentary! Carl will be profoundly missed by family and friends with whom he laughed, served, taught, and loved.  His quick wit and word plays brightened our smiles and lightened our load. His intellectual curiosity made every day better! Carl’s gentleness showed true strength. He has fulfilled God’s call!
Carl is survived by his wife, Michelle and his son, Carl; his siblings, Lillian, Marie, Anne, Victor (Betty), and Richard (Jenny); many beloved nieces and nephews; and close relationships of extended family. We give a heart-felt “Thank you!” for your generous love and prayers. You have supported Carl so well through this long period of illness. Glory to God, whose grace and power are working wonders through you! For donations, the family recommends the following options: (Please include on the memo line In Memoriam of Carl A.
