Obituary Preview: Rita Gloria Jones was called home to the Lord on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, in Northampton Post Acute with her family by her side.

She was born February 19, 1930, and grew up in Warren Glen, NJ.

Rita was affectionately known as Bunky, Cuzzie and Auntie by her family, friends and the Easton community. She was very active in the community and had the ability to bring people together by giving her annual clam bakes, pig roast and boat rides up the Hudson. She was known to be a frequent walker in downtown Easton. She was also an avid coin collector.

She retired at the age of 65 after working many years at the Delaware Bridge Toll Commission. During her younger years, she did domestic work cleaning houses and offices.

Rita was preceded in death by her mother, Bernice Freeman, her father, Irvin Freeman, a son, Richard Freeman, sisters, Barbara Johnson, Irene Peterson and Joy Freeman, brothers, Irvin Freeman, Jr., Austin Freeman, Robert Freeman and Clarence Freeman.

Rita leaves behind to cherish her memories her daughter, Darolyn Johnson (Louis), of Easton, PA, and the apple of her eye, granddaughter, Cody Johnson, of North Bergen, NJ. She is survived by a sister, Alberta LaRue, of Nebraska, a brother, Bruce Freeman (Anita), of Easton, and a sister-in-law, Barbara Freeman, of Easton. There are many nieces and nephews, too many to mention, who have many stories and unforgettable memories of Bunk.

The family would like to acknowledge the staff and Eveyln Vargas for the extraordinary care given to Rita during her stay at the nursing home. A Celebration of Life will be announced in the future. She was the beloved wife of the late Frank A. Galasso for 69 years until his passing on November 20, 2016.

Years ago, she worked for the former Jo-Anne Dress Factory.

Mary was a lifelong member of Rice Ebner American Legion Post #588 and a longtime member of a bowling league and card club. She had been a volunteer for various area charities.

She had a kind and loving nature and was loyal to her family and friends. Mary truly had a heart of gold. She was the beloved mother of three sons, Frank, of Palmer Township, Nick and his wife Donna, of Palmer Township, and Ron and his wife Yvonne, of Easton. She loved her two grandsons, Nicky and Ryan, and her two great-grandsons, Maverick and Grayson. She has one surviving sister, Anne Peake, of Palmer Township and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two sisters, Helen Bencak and Theresa Cooke, and three brothers, Lous, Ernie and Ray Bencak

She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

Carter, Sr., and Beulah (Thompson) Carter. On May 12, 2024, at the age of 90, William Carter Jr. of Easton, PA, peacefully departed from his earthly home.

In late 1977, William embarked on a journey of love and partnership with his cherished wife, Mildred J. (Washington) Carter. Together, they nurtured and raised their six children, shaping their lives with values of integrity and compassion.

William's service to his country extended beyond the Korean War, where he served honorably in the United States Army. A self-taught diesel mechanic, he dedicated his working years to mastering his craft, eventually retiring as a respected self-employed professional.

Family was William's anchor, and he found immense joy in their company. His granddaughter, Shauntè "Boop," held a special place in his heart, as he delighted in showering her with affection. An enthusiast of trucks, William passed on his knowledge and passion to his son Terry, sharing countless moments behind the wheel. Music, particularly the soulful tunes of Al Green, brought him solace and joy, often inspiring impromptu dance sessions with loved ones.

In addition to his devoted wife, Mildred, William leaves behind a legacy of love through his three sons: Eddie Patterson and his wife Ruth of Charlestown, NH; Delano Carter of Allentown, PA; and Terry Carter and his wife Sheilia of Columbus, OH. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and 20 great-great-grandchildren.

William was preceded in death by one son Birden Lawson and two daughters, Jacqueline Lawson and Deborah Patterson, as well as his brothers and sisters. His memory will forever be cherished by those whose lives he touched with his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering love.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her granddaughter, dancing at the former Shull Senior Center, and walking. Gladys had volunteered with Glendon Lion’s Club.

Gladys had been a member of the former Glendon United Methodist Church and its Dorcas Society.

Surviving is a son, Donald Edwin Young and his wife Beth, of Glendon; a granddaughter, Violet Elizabeth Young; nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Edwin Atkinson and two sisters, Lois Smith and Gloria DiGiacomo.

He and his wife, Kay (Bennett) Brotzman, celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary on September 22, 2023.

Terry graduated from Easton High School in 1964. After graduating, he proudly served in the U.S. Army.

He retired from Ace Electric.

Terry was a former member and lieutenant of the Williams Township Fire Co. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman.

In addition to his wife, Kay, he is survived by four daughters, Ellen Kirkpatrick and her husband Bob, Jenny Kressman and her husband Robby, Holly Molder and her husband Alan, and Cheryl Siegfried; and eight grandchildren, Lindsay and Brendan Kirkpatrick, Paige and Kyle Kressman, Cody Paetzell, Amber and Sean Siegfried, and Wyatt Deemer. He was predeceased by a brother, Dennis Brotzman.

Born July 20, 1926, in Wilson Borough, PA, he was a son of the late Charles and Louisa (Gehrig) Hoffman.

Walt was a gentle man of God who loved his Lord, Jesus Christ, his family, his church, and many friends. He served the Lord by willingly giving of himself to others.

He attended Wilson High School where he enjoyed playing tackle on the Wilson Warrior football team. He served in the U.S. Army during the liberation of Europe in World War II.

Walt retired from his family construction business, Charles Hoffman and Sons, Inc., in 1991.

He was a long-time member of Fellowship Church, Phillipsburg, NJ, where he served in various capacities over the years. Previously, he was a member of the Beulah Bible Fellowship Church, Easton, where he had been a boys Sunday School teacher.

Walt leaves behind several loving nephews, Gene and his wife Sue, Scott and his wife Lisa, Curt and his wife Bonnie, and Walter H. and his wife Jessica; nieces, June Hoffman, Debra Propsom and her husband Sam, and Dawn Howells; many grand and great nephews and nieces; and family friend, Norman Radford, who thought of Walt as an uncle. He was predeceased by four brothers, Charles W., Robert, Herbert, and Harold; four sisters, Charlotte and Martha Hoffman, Frances Rush Bean, and an infant, Carolina; two nephews, Jay and Charles H.; and a nephew-in-law, Donald Howells.

Surviving are her loving children, Deborah A. Carty, of Hanover Township, PA, Richard O. “Butch” Carty and his wife Kimberly, of Stroudsburg, PA, Bonnie L. Strausser, of Bath, PA; Gary G. Carty, of Macungie, PA, James K. Carty and his wife Sharon, of Naples, FL and Scott E. Norman was an avid Eagles fan. He enjoyed puzzles, gardening, bowling and tinkering around the house.

Surviving is a son, Edward Moffo, of Palmer Township; a daughter, Terri Cummins and her husband Carl, of Great Meadows, NJ; a sister, Rose Berardinucci, of Palmer Township; two grandchildren, Carl Cummins and his wife Nikkole, and Nicole Cummins; many nieces and nephews and a longtime friend, Margaret Messinger, of Nazareth. She was an avid reader of novels. Shirley enjoyed attending church functions, and cooking and baking for family and friends. She was known for her signature potato salad.

Shirley was a member of Union A.M.E. Church.

Surviving is a son, Cary Henry and two daughters, Shirlene Henry and Sandra Henry-Jones, all of Easton; two grandchildren, Nicole Jones and her partner Jamiel Curto and Kyle Gilbert and his fiancée Shakirah Green; and six great-grandchildren, Arrmony, NiyaLee, Jaelynn, Gabriella, Caiden and Luca. She was predeceased by three sisters, Vera Hawkins, Bernice Johnson and LaVern Wallace.

Joe loved being with his family and spending time with his grandchildren and his dogs. He enjoyed gardening and landscaping.

He was of the Roman Catholic faith.

In addition to his wife, Carol, he is survived by three sons, Michael Palmer and his wife Tammy, Todd Palmer and his wife Teresa, and John Palmer and his wife Heidi, and a daughter, Tracey Gerencser and her husband Michael, all of Williams Township; nine grandchildren, Heather Palmer, Cassandra Palmer, Alex Palmer, Derek Palmer, Tiffany Schreckengast, Adam Palmer, Joshua Palmer, Ashley Irizarry, and Steven Santangelo; and three great-grandchildren, Ryker Palmer, Peyton Irizarry, Brady Irizarry and one on the way.

Obituary Preview: Stanley L. Applegate, Sr., 92, of Williams Township, passed away Friday, January 5, 2024, in St. Luke’s Hospital-Anderson Campus surrounded by his loving family.

Born April 2, 1931, in Easton, PA, he was a son of the late Edward F. and Elsie V. (Reiss) Applegate.

His wife of 42 years, Olga (Chomack) Applegate, passed away December 27, 1995.

Stan graduated from Wilson High School in 1950, in the same month the Korean War started. He lettered on the track team for all four years and was voted captain in his senior year. He lettered three years on the basketball team that won the league title in 1949-1950.

He lettered for two years on the football team, playing on Wilson’s first undefeated and untied team in 1949. In September of 1950, he attended Millersville State Teachers College where he lettered in football.

In January of 1951, he enlisted with the United States Marine Corps. He served one year in Korea on the defensive line. In January of 1954, he was honorably discharged.

After the military, he worked on a farm, drove school bus, and worked at the former Easton Car and Construction as a foreman. Later, he worked as a foreman at the former Ecolare. He retired from Lafayette College as an assistant supervisor in 1995.

Stan loved spending time with his children as they grew from childhood into adulthood. He liked farming and gardening, hunting, fishing, and trapping, with his sons. He enjoyed watching his daughters play softball.

He was a long-time member of Christ E.C. Church (Blue Church) of Williams Township, where he had served as a trustee, treasurer, and on the cemetery committee for thirty years. He co-authored with Steward Behn, “A History of the Blue Church.” He most recently worshipped at St. John’s Church on Morgan Hill until poor health curtailed his attendance.

Stan was a lifetime member of Lester W. Pfeffer, American Legion Post 611. He was a member and past president of the Wilson Varsity Club and had served on Northampton County Draft Board.

Surviving are two sons, Stanley L. Applegate, Jr., of Wilson Borough and Walter Applegate, of Yuma, AZ; two daughters, Phyllis Frey and her husband Jeffrey, and Gloria Applegate, both of Williams Township; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey, Joshua and Hannah Frey, Lori Belton, Jason Applegate, Kelly Applegate and Anthony Pearce; eleven great-grandchildren, Mackenna and Sean Belton, Tyler, Keria, and Katlyn Applegate, Jenna Frey, Jocelyn, Hunter, Landon, Brody and Ethan Frey; a sister-in-law, Claudia Nichols, of Berlin, NH; nieces and nephews. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Williams Township.

John was also a member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Northern Masonic Jurisdiction; Saucon Lodge No. 469 F & AM, Coopersburg; and a life member of the VFW of the United States.
