Obituary Preview: ELIZABETH “BETSY” JANE HICKS WEST, age 81, of 644 Dove Circle, Bluefield, VA, passed away Thursday night, May 16, 2024 at UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, NC.
Mrs. West was born August 7, 1942 in Florence County, SC, daughter of the late John Dudley Hicks & Mary McAllister Hicks and was wife of 60 years to Peter John West who survives.   She was retired from Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands, VA and was a member of First Baptist Church where she was active in Sunday School, Missions, WMU, and the Senior Adult Ministry.
Betsy enjoyed playing the piano, sewing and crafts, growing beautiful flowers, and was a great South Carolinian cook.
Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, Paul A. West of Princeton, WV, Mark D. West & fiancée, Trish Kelley of Bluefield, VA, five grandchildren, Shane W. West of Abingdon, VA, Zachary J. West & wife, Carman of Bluefield, VA, Michael West of the home, Logan West, Landon West, both of Princeton, WV, two great-grandsons, Hunter West, Walker West who were a joy to Betsy’s life, nephews, Robert Poole & wife, Cheri of Atlanta, GA, Steven Hicks & wife, Sherrie of Germantown, TN, John Poole & wife of Brazil, nieces, Julia Wiman & husband, Chet of Owensboro, KY, Delores W. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2024 at First Baptist Church, 1325 Augusta Street, Bluefield, WV.  Interment will follow on Saturday, May 25, 2024 in the Olive Branch Baptist Church Cemetery, 7588 Dirgie Mine Road, Roxboro, NC at 2:00 p.m.

Mrs. Pruitt was born January 21, 1928 in Person County, NC, daughter of the late Silas Carey & Dora Rebecca Stone Long and was wife of 69 years to the late Howard Pruitt.   She was retired from farming and was of the Baptist faith.
Eunice enjoyed cooking, flowers, gardening, raising chickens, sitting on the porch watching the humming birds and squirrels, and having her grandchildren visit.
Surviving are three children, Donnie Pruitt & wife, Patricia, Susan McAbee, Wendy Russell & companion, Mike Jablonski, five grandchildren, Robin McAbee Oakley & husband, Kevin, David McAbee, Jr. & wife, Stephanie, Sherrey Guthrie (Rickie Allen), Scott Guthrie & husband, Ale, Jason Guthrie, thirteen great-grandchildren, Katelyn Oakley (Billy Warwick), Cody Oakley, Dylan Oakley, Eric Oakley, Abigale Oakley, Madelyn Oakley, Brendan Noble, Logan McAbee, Jake McAbee, Alyssa McAbee, Ciara Guthrie, Kyle Guthrie, Keelea Guthrie (LaDarius Nelson), three great-great grandchildren, Lyrik Johnson, ZayDen Nelson, Persephone Warwick, two sisters, Mattie Wilson, and Marie Brinkley.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 17, 2024 in the Strickland and Jones Funeral Services Chapel with Pastor Gene Wolfe and Pastor Frankie Reaves officiating.  Interment will follow in the Olive Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends and guests from 6:30 till 8:00 p.m. Thursday, May 16, 2024 at the funeral home and other times at the home.

Mrs. Bowes was born August 13, 1964 in Person County, NC, daughter of the late James Samuel “Jimmie” & Rachel Daphine Allen Hornbuckle and was wife of nearly 35 years to Haywood Junior Bowes who survives.  She was a homemaker, a member of The Eastern Star, and was a member of Mt. Harmony Baptist Church.
Betsy enjoyed trips to the beach, flowers, animals, and going to luncheons with the Christian Women’s Club.
Surviving in addition to her husband are a brother, David Lee Hornbuckle & fiancée, Deborah Garrard of Rougemont, NC.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Bowes is preceded in death by a brother, William Curtis Hornbuckle.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 9, 2024 at Mt. Harmony Baptist Church with Pastor Barry Chambers officiating.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends and guests from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Martha enjoyed flower gardening, crafting, music, drawing, painting, cake decorating, and trips to the beach.

James enjoyed riding his Moped, visiting with family & friends, joking, and making people laugh.
Surviving are four daughters, Misty, Melissa, Kurstin, Maggie, two sisters, Joyce R. Bowes, Norma R. Bailey & husband, James, and a host of grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Reaves is preceded in death by a son, Burley Thomas Reaves, and sister, Nora Lee Bohanon.

Obituary Preview: JUNE FRANCES GARRETT BOWES, age 88, of 1615 Cates Mill Road, Roxboro, NC passed away Wednesday afternoon, April 24, 2024 at her home with her loving family by her side.
Mrs. Bowes was born January 26, 1936 in Person County, NC, daughter of the late Stephen Radford & Phoebe Ann Hicks Garrett and was wife of the late Edgar Reade “Meece” Bowes.  She graduated from Helena High School in 1954 and Watts School of Nursing in 1957.  She then made a career in nursing and retired from Ridge Road Medical Group after 35 years of service, and was a member of Antioch Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, served as treasurer and on various other committees.
June enjoyed singing in the church choir, sewing, bird watching, visiting with people, spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and was the queen of word search puzzles.
Surviving are three children, Donnie R. Bowes & wife, Wendy of Timberlake, NC, Joyce B. Whitfield & husband, Phillip of Hurdle Mills, NC, Ed B. Bowes & wife, Tonya of Roxboro, NC, five grandchildren, Garrett Whitfield & wife, Anna, Colby Whitfield & wife, Brannsyn, Josh Bowes, Garrison Perkins & husband, Alex, Jackson Bowes, three great-grandchildren, Avery Whitfield, Jase Whitfield, Ridge Perkins, two brothers, John Mark Garrett, and Ray E. Garrett.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Bowes is preceded in death by three sisters, Doris G. Patterson, Elizabeth G. Harris, Emogene G. Carver, and two brothers, Billy R. Garrett, and Steve O. Garrett.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, April 28, 2024 at Antioch Baptist Church with Dr. M. David Chambers officiating.  Interment will follow in the Person Memorial Cemetery at a later date.  The family will receive friends and guests from 1:30 until 2:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church and other times at the home.

Mrs. Groover was born June 8, 1961 in Halifax County, VA, daughter of the late Rufus Anderson Yancey & Georgia Brann Smith Yancey and was wife of Richard Groover who survives.  She had many jobs throughout her life, her all-time favorite was taking care of children, all of whom she loved, and was a member of Beach Assembly of God Church in Ocean Isle, NC.
Ginger was raised on a tobacco farm where she learned all about hard work.  She loved her beach life!  She enjoyed fishing, going on cruises with her sisters, and spending time with family and friends.
Surviving in addition to her husband are four children, Dexter Snow & wife, Haley, Cody Snow, Jacob Groover & wife, Emily, Jennifer Massey & husband, Nathan, nine grandchildren, Alexsis, Raylan, Jamison, Amaris, Garris, Ava, Nathan Cade, Jaycie, and Everley, two sisters, Gail West & husband, Bob, Yvette Rice & husband, Wendell, brother, Andy Yancey, and a host of nieces & nephews.

Mr. Long was born October 27, 1961 in Person County, NC, son of the late Thomas Wayne Long & Lillie Mae Pruitt Montague who survives and was husband of 32 years to April Susanne Pritchard Long who also survives.  He was formerly employed with Tultex Mills and was of the Baptist faith.
Tommy was an outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was an avid NC State fan.
Surviving in addition to his mother and wife are a brother, Rick Long, half-sister, Priscilla Long, both of Roxboro, NC, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
In addition to his father, Tommy is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Alfred & Sarah Long, maternal grandparents, Joe & Sarah Pruitt, and his pet dogs, JoJo & RoRo.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Franklin “Frankie” Gentry, brother, Wayne Towery, sisters, Betty Jo Jackson, and Mary Alice Pulley, brother-in-law, Neal Jackson, sisters-in law, Pat Towery, Trilvie Towery, Dianne Gentry Beaty, and nephew, Stephen “Bo-Bo” Dickerson.
Jane is survived by her sons, Andy Newcomb (Julie) of Greensboro, NC, Robbie Gentry (Elizabeth) of Roxboro, NC, grandchildren, Liv Newcomb, Lorene Gentry, Bristol Teague, and Grace Gentry, brother, Gerald Towery (Linda), sister-in-law, Brenda Whitt, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Jane worked at GKN for 21 years until her retirement in 2013.  She loved spending time with family and friends, especially her most prized possessions, her grandchildren, and grand dogs.  She also enjoyed cooking, entertaining, attending church, shopping, country music, and trips to the beach.
The family will receive friends and guests from 11:30 am until 12:30 pm Friday, April 19, 2024 at Antioch Baptist Church (677 Antioch Church Road, Timberlake, NC}, immediately followed by a Celebration of Life service with Dr. M. David Chambers officiating.  All other gatherings will be held at the home of Robbie and Elizabeth Gentry, 2526 Chub Lake Road, Roxboro, NC.

Randy was an avid Carolina fan and enjoyed motorcycle riding, river tubing on the New River, and spending time with his family & friends.
Surviving are his nephew, Chris Ragan & wife, Patricia of Rougemont, NC, niece, Ginny R. Brosnan & husband, Dan of Trent Woods, NC, great-niece, Rebecca Goodwin & husband, Nick of Havelock, NC, long-time companion, Vicki Gentry, and a host of friends.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Turner is preceded in death by a sister, Linda Ragan, and pet dog, Reese.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 16, 2024 in the Strickland and Jones Funeral Services Chapel with the Rev. Patrick Sinclair officiating.  Interment will follow in the Person Memorial Cemetery.  The family will receive friends and guests from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Raymond enjoyed vegetable gardening, singing, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Obituary Preview: It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Phillip Leonard Beach of Rougemont, September 30, 1951 - March 6, 2024. “Phil” served in the National Guard Reserves and after 6 years of service he received an honorable discharge in 1976. Phil was well known and loved by many co-workers as a high-voltage distribution/transmission lineman for 38 years. He worked many catastrophic locations devasted by storms restoring power on the east coast until retirement. During his free time, Phil spent the last 14 years opening his heart and home as a foster parent to many homeless animals supporting his wife’s passion & non-profit animal rescue. He always welcomed a needy dog with TLC. He and his wife fostered over 800 animals. Phil was also known as the best “fire starter” and spent many evenings around firepits with family and friends. Phil had a unique eye and could spot arrow heads in the thickest pastures. His unparalleled skill in honing knifes and knot tying stood as a testament to his craftsmanship. Phil’s gracious mountain man personality gave everyone a sense of warmth, comfort and belonging. He was truly the person you picture when you hear the phrase “he would give you the shirt off his back”.   His love of the outdoors and sense of humor was a joy to be around and brought light to everyone in his life.
Phil is survived by his wife, Rhonda Chandler Beach, sons, Phillip Leonard Beach II and wife, Lana, Samuel Alias Carroll Beach, grandchildren, Kaleigh Desiree Beach, Karter Eli Beach, Colson Jeremiah Beach, Emery Rose Beach, brother-in-law, Darrell Chandler and fiancé, Loren, sisters-in-law, Sheila Beach, Gretel Beach, nephews, Justin Chandler and wife, Kristen, Marc Chandler and wife, Ashley, Daniel Beach and wife, Lisa, Jeffrey Beach and wife, Kristi, James Beach Jr, and grand-niece, McKenzie Chandler.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Barrier Beach, father, Ernest Beach, brothers, David Robert Beach, James Andrew Beach, and sister, Brenda Ray Beach.
