Gene M. Boyd - February 01, 1931 - February 04, 2023

Departed: 02/04/2023 (Strasburg)
Obituary Preview: Gene Milton Boyd from Strasburg, Colorado, passed away on Saturday, February 4, 2023 - just
three days past his 92nd birthday. Gene was born on February 1, 1931, in Brownington, Missouri, to John Lee Boyd and Minnie Emma Elizabeth Boyd. He was the 6th of 7 children. Gene grew up on a small farm in the hills of Northwestern Missouri. His family was dirt poor, but he didn’t know it at the time. Gene’s family lived off the land. They grew a big garden and raised milk cows, pigs, and chickens. The only things they purchased from the store were flour, sugar, and salt. All of their farming was
done with teams of horses and mules, and they didn’t have electricity or indoor plumbing. Gene spent his childhood summers barefoot feeding livestock, gathering eggs, and pulling weeds in the garden. On Saturdays, when his folks went to town to sell milk and cream, Gene cleaned neighbor’s chicken houses. He earned between $1.50 and $1.75 per chicken house,
which was a lot of money for a kid in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Gene went to school in a one-room schoolhouse. He finished 8th grade but never went to high school. Instead, he worked. During his teen years, Gene farmed with horses, hauled water to threshing crews, and did road construction work. He wanted to join the military, but his older brother begged him not to, so Gene listened. Gene was fiercely patriotic and always regretted not serving. Gene enjoyed living in Missouri, but in the late 1940s, it was hard to find a decent-paying job there, so he knew he needed to move. When he heard about work at a sugar beet factory in Brighton, Colorado, he hitched a ride with his friend Harold in his 1941 Chevy car and headed to Colorado. Gene was only 17 years old at the time. He left home with just the
clothes on his back. Unfortunately, when Gene got to Colorado, the factory jobs were gone. Thankfully though, he heard about a man named John Schmidt who needed short-term help hauling wheat. Gene needed work, so he headed south of Strasburg to take the temporary job. John liked Gene, so after wheat hauling he hired him to be a full-time farmhand. Gene lived in the one-room
bunkhouse on John’s place. In 1951, Gene married a girl who lived just up the road - Donna (Hanlon) Boyd. Together, they lived a very simple life. Their small house had electricity but no indoor plumbing. Donna cooked everything from scratch and sewed dresses from flour sacks. The couple had 2 daughters, Linda and Beverly. Their first son, Steven, died shortly after birth. Gene continued to work as a farmhand until 1954 when the severe drought forced him to look for work off the farm. He found
a carpentry job in Denver, so the family moved north of Strasburg.
In 1959, John called Gene to see if he would like to come back and help on the farm again. Gene loved farming, so he agreed and moved back south of Strasburg to a piece of land he would live on for the rest of his life. There, Gene and Donna had another son, Mark. Gene continued to work for John until 1972 when he retired. At that time, Gene took over the farm and ran it until his own retirement in 1996. Gene found great joy in working and could often be found
whistling while he worked. After retirement, Gene enjoyed driving his Chevrolet pickups, bowling, restoring old tractors and
attending tractor pulls. Gene, affectionately known as Papa by his family, is survived by his wife of 71 years, Donna,
children Linda Hall, Beverly Quall and Mark Boyd, 8 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren. Gene was preceded in death by his son Steven Boyd, parents, and six siblings: Johnny, Della
Maye, Opal, Charlie, Roy, and Owen.

Obituary Preview: To those I love and those who love me When I am gone release me, let me go I have many things to see and do
You mustn’t tie yourself to me with tears.
Be happy that we had so many years. I gave to you my love. You can only guess how much you gave me in happiness I thank you for the love you each have shown.
But now it’s time I traveled on alone. Oh -the sound of that train whistle is calling me to get aboard, ready to get on that plane for a wild ride, ready to ride my BMW motorcycle again – go join my lovely wife Betty now.
So grieve a while for me, if grieve you must’ then let your grief be comforted by trust.
I won’t be far away, for life goes on.
So if you need me call and I will come.
Though you can’t see me or touch me I’ll be near. And if you listen with your heart you will hear…
There will be a private service held at a later date.

George O. Ehmann - November 08, 1932 - September 25, 2022

Departed: 09/25/2022 (Strasburg)
Obituary Preview: George Oliver Ehmann was born on November 8th, 1932 to George Julius and Margaret Esta (Lowell) Ehmann. It is interesting to note that this is the day that Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected for the first time. This did not influence George’s political leaning because he was a lifelong republican.
After a couple of jaunts to California for work opportunities and three years at a grocery store in Agate, George’s parents settled in their home in Elbert, Colorado. George’s two sisters, Delores and Bertha were born there. In 1945 the family moved to Deer Trail. George went to high school and graduated in 1950. After graduation he worked at various jobs including truck driving, construction, and others. He married Joyce Griffith on December 2nd, 1950 at the Friends Church. Revered L C Platt was the Pastor. This was the beginning of 71 years of loving, caring, and sharing.
We moved to Eastlake, Colorado where he worked for a construction company building the Rocky Mountain Arsenal. We were there for about a year. On September 16th, 1951 we welcomed our first daughter, Linda. Then it was back to Deer Trail. George again worked in construction, this time for about a year at Deer Trail School adding lockers, making a larger lunchroom, and maybe some more things! In 1953, it was back to the farm where we raised wheat, beans, and cow feed. George worked for Jim Proudfood, a neighboring sheep rancher. We also had about 10 milk cows. In his spare time, he, Jim, and Ben Eldringhoff pitched horseshoes. Our second daughter, Judy joined us August 24th, 1953 and daughter number 3, Joyce Gale on September 11th, 1956.
After five years, we thought a change would be nice so we bought a grocery store in Byers. Our daughter, Holly joined us on September 20th, 1959. In 1965, a devastating flood wiped out the grocery store so George said “Oh well, we’ll take a vacation”. We packed up the kids and headed for Disneyland and other California scenes. Then back to Byers to start over. We built, remodeled, and opened our new store in December 1966.
George always liked to be busy, so in addition to the store, he started a new cattle herd. He rented Kendra Barnes’ farm, bought his herd of Hereford cows. We ran the store and the farm for about 20 years. Then one day, Jim Brown walked into the store and said “you wanna sell this place?” George said “Sure, you wanna buy it?”. Our daughters were grown, so we bought more land, remodeled an old ranchhouse and started raising cows. First he bred the original Herefords to Red Angus then crossed them with Gelbvieh. That to his mind was the perfect cow – big, beautiful red, they had to be red, gentle cows. He did this until health forced him to retire – about 40 years. Then in 2018, we moved to Strasburg. His health was rapidly failing, but he didn’t complain.
He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Joyce. His daughters, Linda Ludwig (Harry), Judy Smith (Randy), Gale Bell (Randy) and Holly Hoover (Casey). 6 grandsons, 6 granddaughters, 27 great grandchildren, 2 sisters Delores Kroh (Carl) and Bertha Rector, 3 nieces and 1 nephew.

He was a man of few words, but he had a direct, honest manner and quiet sense of humor that made a positive impact in all his surroundings. Scott’s wife and children are forever grateful for the love and support of these friends throughout the years and especially in recent months.
Scott was preceded in death by his father, his grandparents Floyd and Erla Hughes, his mother-in-law Rose Unrein and brother-in-law Eric Unrein.
