Thomas Siconolfi - October 30, 1943 - May 12, 2024

Obituary Preview: Rev. Thomas Joseph Siconolfi, C.Ss.R., a member of the St. Clement Hofbauer community, Ephrata, PA, died on May 12, 2024, age 80. Born in Brooklyn, NY, October 30, 1943, to Anthony and Julia (Gleason), he was baptized and confirmed at the Redemptorist parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. He also attended the OLPH grammar school, eventually matriculating to St. Mary’s Minor Seminary in North East, PA (1957-1962). He attended St. Mary’s College, Ilchester, Maryland, where he professed first vows on August 2, 1964, and then St. Alphonsus College, Suffield, CT where he professed final vows on September 2, 1968, and from which he received his baccalaureate degree. He attended the theologate at Mt. St. Alphonsus, Esopus, NY, receiving the M.Div. degree, and was ordained in its chapel on June 21, 1970.

After ordination, Father Siconolfi served as a missionary to Brazil in the Vice-Province of Campo Grande. He was active in parish ministry and frequently gave parish missions. His assignments there included Aquidauana (1971-1973); Ponta Pora (1973-1975); S. Antonio, Campo Grande (1975-1977); Aquidauana (rector, 1977-1980); and Ponta Pora (1980-1981). During his ministry in Brazil, he was active with youth groups and could be found organizing outings and pilgrimages for them. He sometimes had the opportunity to fly over his parishes and loved to take photographs of them from above.

In the Baltimore Province, Father Siconolfi served as associate pastor at Our Mother of Perpetual Help, Ephrata, PA (1982-July 1987); he was pastor and rector at Our Lady of Fatima, Baltimore (1987-1993); St. Mary’s, Annapolis (1993-1999); and St. Martin of Tours, Bethpage, NY (1999-2005). He served in retreat ministry at Notre Dame Retreat House in Canandaigua, NY (2005-2008), and as director at San Alfonso Retreat House, West End, NJ (2008-2012); declining health brought him back to Ephrata, PA where he lived at St. Clement’s Mission House until the time of his death.

While he was pastor of St. Mary’s in Annapolis, he supervised the construction of the new mission church of St. John Neumann in that city, a sprawling complex that, at the time, gave attention to the growth of Hispanic Catholics in the area but also the need for increased catechetical and athletic facilities.

He was predeceased by his parents as well as his brother and sister-in-law, Anthony and Patricia Siconolfi, and his sister, Marianne Gavin. He is survived by his brother-in-law, Bill and his beloved nieces and nephews. All services will take place Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church, 320 Church Avenue, Ephrata, PA 17522. The schedule is as follows: Wednesday, May 15, Visitation at 6:30 PM followed by Vigil Service at 7:30 PM; Thursday, May 16, Visitation at 10:00 AM followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM. A viewing will be held on Thursday, May 16, 2024, beginning at 7 PM, at Bethany Slavic Church, 864 Dawn Avenue, Ephrata. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 17, 2024, beginning at 10 AM, at the church, with Bethany Slavic Church ministry officiating. Interment will take place in the Mellingers Union Cemetery.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Sheree, wife of Daniel Wolf; three sons, Keith Heil, Timothy, husband of Valerie Heil, Todd, husband of Beth Heil; a stepson, Rex, husband of Kathy Litzenberger; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Audrey Seibel and a brother, Terry, husband of Mary Heil.

A memorial Service will be held on Friday, May 17, 2024, at 4 PM, at Liberty Baptist Church, 47 Cindia Ln, Ephrata. Inurnment will be private at the convenience of the family.

She attended church at Ephrata Manor and was a member of the Friendly Circle.

Ethel worked in retail her entire working years with many years at the White Shield Drug Store where she was Assistant Manager and finished her career as a retail clerk for Agway. She always looked forward to going out to lunch with the ladies from Agway after she retired. She enjoyed the regular visits from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and spending time with them at many family gatherings.

Ethel is survived by three children, Brenda, wife of Bryan Redcay, Steven husband of Beth Kehler, David husband of Barb Kehler; 11 grandchildren, Brett Kehler, Eric (Lea) Kehler, Jessica (Randy) Grove, Andrea (Michael) Root, Erica (Robert) Cucinella, Angela (Dan) Carhart, Brianna (Keith) Sauder, Wesley Kehler, Joshua (Susan) Kehler, Blake (Kelsey) Redcay, Brandon Redcay; 12 great-grandchildren, Vivian, Connor, Faith, Kira, Daniel, Benjamin, Scarlett, Alexander, Waylynn, Carter, Bryson, and Ava, and a brother, Raymond, husband of Betty Fertig.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Randy Kehler; a granddaughter, Laura Kehler, and sister, Peggy Long.

She was born in Ephrata, daughter of the late Howard J. and Anna M. (Witters) Kreider and was the wife of the late Clarence "C.B.” Horst who passed away in 2013.

First and foremost she was a follower of Jesus and a fierce prayer warrior. She was a member of Blue Ball Community Church where she also served as a pastor’s wife. She led many Bible studies over the years and mentored countless women. She loved being Mother, Grandma, and GiGi and made each family member feel special. She was an award-winning bread baker; and it was expected at all family dinners.

In the early years, Doris completed nurse’s training as a registered nurse and worked in that profession until she had children.

Doris is survived by 6 children, Brenda Zimmerman, wife of Paul, David Horst, husband of Donna, Darlene Gehman, Marvin Horst, husband of Wendy, Nevin Horst, husband of Cheri, and Karen Burkholder, wife of Matt; 25 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by daughter-in-law, Linda M. Horst, son-in-law, R. Dale Gehman sister, Floy Martin, 2 brothers, Harold and Wilbur Kreider, and several great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be held on Monday, May 13, 2024, from 6 to 8 PM at New Life Fellowship, 420 E. Fulton Street, Ephrata. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, 11:00 AM at New Life Fellowship.

He was born in Queens, New York to the late Louis and Anna (Federici) Trotta and was the husband of Lois (Friewald) Trotta, with whom he shared 57 years of marriage.

Richard graduated from The Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan, as an upholsterer. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Vietnam Era. Following his military service, Richard owned a fish store in Passaic, NJ, worked as an upholsterer and furniture salesman in Paramus, NJ, and then a new car salesman for 30 years. He enjoyed his retirement, traveling with his wife, spending time with his family, and being handy around the house. Richard could fix anything from landscaping to plumbing to painting to woodworking. He enjoyed classic car shows and old cowboy movies and tv shows, especially Gunsmoke.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Trotta; a grandson, Jeffrey Metzler and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Philip Trotta and Leonard Trotta.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2024, from 11 AM to 1 PM, with military honors at 12:15 PM, at Stradling Funeral Home, 30 N. 9th Street, Akron.

Mary Jane Martin - August 21, 1957 - April 27, 2024

Obituary Preview: Mary Jane “Janie” Martin, 66, of York, went to her heavenly home on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at Hospice and Community Care in Mount Joy, PA.

Born in Millway, she was the daughter of the late Leroy D. Horst and Esther (Bowman) Horst. She was the wife of Ray L. Martin, with whom she celebrated 48 years of marriage on April 17, 2024.

She was a graduate of Warwick High School, class of 1975, and York Technical Institute, graduating with a degree in interior design. She attended Elevate Church, in Erie, prior to returning to York.

Janie lived to love and serve her Lord, which she demonstrated to all of us throughout her life. She was always sweet, patient and kind. Her concern was not for herself, but for others. Her family was first, but she considered everyone to be family, and this was felt by all whom she touched. Janie was a person who exuded beauty in everything she said and did. From her sweet, kind, and gentle spirit, beautiful smile, tremendous hospitality, the food she cooked and artwork she created, all was remarkably beautiful. Everyone loved Janie because she loved everyone and lived to make them feel special. She taught us that the most important thing in life was what we did for others, and this is how she served her Lord Jesus Christ. Janie was a special gift from God to all of us. She faithfully modeled to all of us what was truly important in life. What a legacy she has left to us! We are grateful to God for the time we had with her and will always hold her memory near and dear in our hearts. We grieve her loss but rejoice that she is finally free from the last 19 months of pain and sickness. She is resting in glorious peace!

In addition to her husband, she is survived by four children, Sheri Golembiewski of Robesonia, Nathan, husband of Terra (Causin) Martin of Baltimore, MD, Heidi Martin, wife of Christian Klaus Haus of Lancaster, Rodney Martin of York; the loves of her life which were her six grandchildren, Owen Scot Moore, Alex Bruce Golembiewski, Friedric Russell Haus, Hans Maximilian Haus, Adrien Jay Martin, Valerie Jean Martin; six sisters, Elsie Horst, Edith, wife of Lloyd Sauder, Janet, wife of Roy Martin, Judy, wife of Glenn Hoover, Karen, wife of Donald Weber and Chris, wife of Jay Good.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four siblings, Florence Horst, (infant) Doris Gerber, Edwin Horst and Richard “Dick” Horst.

In his free time, Walt enjoyed camping, snowmobiling, going to the cabin in Potter County, and taking care of his property. He was a member of Teamsters Local 766.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Diane, wife of Jon Womelsdorf, Dawn, wife of James Reed, Craig, husband of Patty Zimmerman; three stepchildren, Brian, husband of Pam O'Donel, Sharon, wife of Glenn Parks, Jeff, husband of Kelly O'Donel; six grandchildren, Abby, Jarrett, Rachel, Jodie, Wyatt, Jessica; six step-grandchildren, Mike, Kyle, Samantha, Alicia, Carrie, Shaun;, two step-great-grandchildren; six siblings, Shirley Wolford, Robert, husband of Barbara Zimmerman, Bonnie, wife of Willard Schlusser, George, husband of Rosanne Zimmerman, Michael, husband of Suzanne Zimmerman and Dale, husband of Sukee Zimmerman.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Troy Sheaffer and wife Lori; two grandsons, Seth Glick, Adam Glick and wife Kelly; two brothers-in-law, Ray Branas and Gene Steely.

Mark was born in Norfolk, Virginia, to the late Richard and Verlyn (Sawyer) Shepherd. From ages 8 -10 years, he lived in an orphanage before being placed in foster care with the late Paul and Ruth Bucher of Ephrata; he lived with them until he was an adult.

He was a 1971 graduate of Ephrata High School and served in alternate (1-W) service at the University of Maryland Research and Agronomy Farm, Ellicott City, Maryland, during the Vietnam War. Following completion of that service, he returned to Lancaster County and was a career auto salesman for over 35 years. In recent years, he found enjoyment in providing transportation services for the Amish community.

Mark had a vibrant outgoing personality, was a hard worker, and had a gift of engaging in conversation with everyone he met. Among his hobbies were riding motorcycle, snowmobiling, fishing, billiards, and spending time outdoors with family and friends. Mark was very much loved and will be missed by many. He attended LCBC Church, Manheim, and was a member of Legion Riders, PA Post 34 and the Sons of the American Legion, PA Post 34.

He is survived by a son, Dustin Mark Shepherd, of Lancaster; two brothers, Larry (Debra) Hall; Bill Hall and a sister, Kimberly (Steward) McCombs.

In addition to his parents and foster parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Hall.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, April 20, 2024, from 10 to 11 AM, at Stradling Funeral Home, 30 N. 9th Street, Akron, followed by his memorial service at 11 AM, with Pastor Jason Castelli officiating. Inurnment will take place at Middle Creek Cemetery.

Obituary Preview: Daniel L. Wenger, 68, longtime resident of Akron, PA, passed away on Monday, March 25, 2024, at Luther Acres.

Born in Lancaster, PA, son of the late Eli C. and Ruth E. (Henry) Wenger, grandson of the late Clayton S. and Mary S. (Graybill) Henry of Henry’s Homemade Cakes and Pies of Strasburg Pike, Lancaster, grandson of the late Eli D. and Anna Mary (Shirk) Wenger.

Dan was a 1973 graduate of Conestoga Valley High School and Lancaster County Vocational Technical School, Brownstown. He had worked as an auto parts manager. He was a member of Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community, East Earl. He loved God, family, bulldogs, hunting and family genealogy.

Dan is a descendent of Christian Wenger, who came to Pennsylvania on the ship “Molly” in 1727 from Switzerland.

He is survived by two aunts, Betty Wenger Greider of Lancaster, Susan Wenger Smucker of Oregon; maternal cousins, Carol Jean Henry, wife of David J. Hall of Arizona, Michael B., husband of Linda M. Henry of Florida, Barry Becker and many paternal cousins.

Three paternal cousins assisted Dan as he encountered healthcare challenges in recent years. They are Michael Eby of Terre Hill, Miriam Frey of Mountville, PA and Mary Henning of Lansdowne, PA.

In recent months, paternal cousins, Thomas Martin, Quarryville, PA and Nelson Martin, Lititz, PA, a cousin of Dan’s father, were an added presence.

Pastor Leon Hurst, retired pastor Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community, East Earl, was a constant support to Dan during these years.

The family would like to thank everyone, distant family members throughout the country, longtime friends, new neighbors, at Old Hickory Apartments in Lancaster, PA, Kidney and Hypertension Staff in Lancaster, PA, Davita Dialysis Staff at Bridgeport Lancaster and Lititz, PA , Staff at Luther Acres Healthcare in Lititz, PA and Hospice and Community Care who supported Dan throughout the years, the past 3 months and weeks.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, from 10 to 11 am, at Stradling Funeral Home, 201 Church Avenue, Ephrata, followed by his funeral service at 11 am. Interment will take place in Mellinger Mennonite Cemetery, Lancaster.

He was one of a kind that could be depended upon to lend his hand for anything, anywhere, and often long before anyone ever had to ask him.

Andre spent the last 38 years in the Lancaster area of Pennsylvania. He was loved by all who met him everywhere he went.

In the past four years, a tremendous part of his life was his participation in the Veteran's Court Program, which transformed his life in ways that were positively unimaginable. He constantly praised Judge Wright for his ability to lead him to recovery and a better life.

Andre worked as a maintenance mechanic for Dart Container, he later went on to own and operate Pork U BBQ.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his fiancé, Ginny Snavely, to whom he was to be wed on March 23, 2024; three children, Michelle Haase (Charles), Mark Griswold and Mindy Bond (Alex); two grandchildren, Avah and Halsey; two sisters, Michele Zeller (Dan) and Laura Paparella (Nick); two nieces, Katie Girouard (Thomas) and Erica Zeller-Buitrago (Tomas) and a nephew, Benjamin Horne.

Obituary Preview: Sally A. Wise, 62, of Lititz, passed away on Sunday, March 17, 2024, at her home.

She was born to the late Nevin K. and C. Ann (Oberholtzer) Brugger of Akron, PA, and was the wife of David Wise.

Sally graduated from Ephrata High School in 1979 and received her BA from Ursinus College. Sally traveled to Germany many times: a time living with the Lehmann family (who became a life-long connection), a college junior year abroad (University of Freiburg), 14 student exchanges and personal travel. Sally taught German at several areas schools before having children. She resumed teaching at Ephrata High School where she taught for more than 20 years. Sally was tireless in service to her callings. She continued the excellence of the German language program at Ephrata HS through instruction (34 of 40 student earned medals in 2024 national testing), student exchanges with Eberbach (sister city in Germany), German NHS and more. Her guiding vision: international friendships build bridges of peace and understanding. Sally was a nurturer and advocate, particularly for young women and marginalized (immigrants, LGBTQ, parentless and other disadvantaged students). Son Peter observed that she was a “mother to all.”

Sally poured love and wisdom into her own children from stay-at-home mom years through adulthood. Peter and Annie were her crown jewels. Ever intentional, in her last year, she spoke and wrote her love, advice and reflections for family members. Sally was a matriarch and glue that held her wider families together, caring for her mother for 20+ years, and hosting countless extended family dinners. Nieces, nephews and their spouses felt Sally’s embrace and support. Sally was an excellent cook and assembled a two-volume cookbook of her best meals as a continuing gift for her family. Appreciation of art and art history extends from Sally’s mom Ann through Sally to daughter Annie, including many visits to galleries in the US and Europe. Sally enjoyed nature - birds, wildflowers, fishing - especially at Quimby Country in Vermont. Sally enjoyed a challenging hike and a great meal after, something she and Dave shared since 1978. In later years, out of love for her children, Sally pushed herself to hike in the Alps/Dolomites and backpack in Colorado’s wilderness areas - joyful memories for her family.

Sally participated in Akron Mennonite Church and Blossom Hill Mennonite Church and enjoyed friendships and small groups of each. A multi-decade book group of inquisitive women was a joy.

Sally’s self-chosen epitaph: loving wife, mother, sister, life-long learner, teacher, servant.

In addition to her husband, Sally is survived by a son, Peter Wise of Boulder, CO; a daughter, Annie Wise of Washington, DC; a brother, Steve, husband of Rebecca Brugger of Stevens; a sister, Julie, wife of Paul Finke of Davidson, NC and a sister-in-law, Trina Brugger of Denver.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Jeffrey Brugger.

A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at Akron Mennonite Church, 1311 Diamond Street, Akron. Receiving line 2:00-3:00, service 3:30. Obituary Preview: H. William Donecker, 93, of Ephrata, passed away on Friday, March 15, 2024, at his home.

He was born in Elizabethtown to the late C. Paul and Violet (Garman) Donecker and was the husband of Betty (Shober) Donecker with whom he shared 66 years of marriage.

Bill was a member of St. John's UCC, Denver. He was a 1949 graduate of Ephrata High School. Bill served his country in the US Army during the Korean War.

Alongside his father, C. Paul Donecker, Bill co-founded the C. Paul Donecker Club Plan in 1949. Initially established as a mail-order company specializing in furniture and dry goods, the business swiftly expanded. In 1961, the father/son team started selling women’s clothing out of two apartments on North State Street but quickly opened a store on the corner of Walnut and North State, beginning what came to be known as Doneckers.

Over the next thirty years, Doneckers grew from a single store to a well known destination. With the additions of The Men’s Store at Doneckers in 1978, The Restaurant and Inns at Doneckers in 1984, The Artworks at Doneckers in 1989 and The Fine Furniture Galleries at Doneckers in the early 2000’s, people from around the country sought out Ephrata, Pennsylvania and the Doneckers experience.

The Doneckers Community was served by over 350 employees who brought Bill Donecker’s vision to life day in and day out. Unparalleled service and exceptional quality became synonymous with the unique offerings and stylish selection at Doneckers. Visitors came for the day or the weekend to experience the charm, sophistication and hospitality that Doneckers offered.

Bill was an active and engaged member of the Ephrata community, helping not only to bring nearly 500,000 visitors annually to the town, but also through his involvement in the development of the area and the key relationship between the town and its sister city of Eberbach, Germany.

While Bill was committed to his business, his employees, his customers, and his community, he also found time to enjoy things outside of that. He was an avid tennis player, playing daily after work. He loved to travel, whether it was for business to all the major markets and trade shows, or personally with his family and friends throughout Europe or on ski trips in Vermont.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Melinda, wife of Joe Beatty of Lititz, Beckie, wife of Dave Beazley of Ephrata, Jennifer, wife of Ken Grove of Lititz; two grandsons, Colin, husband of Michele Beatty, Erik, husband of Kristie Beatty; two step-grandsons, Kevin Grove, Todd, husband of Kelsey Grove and two great-grandchildren, Ella and Lucas Beatty.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Paul G. "Snook" Donecker, a sister, Bette M. Miller and an infant grandson, Mathew Ryan Beatty.

Kevin was outgoing and easy to talk to. He made people of every age laugh with his stories and witty observations. He was a loyal friend, and many of those friendships endured since his school days. He liked to cook and enjoyed the simple things in life, like having a cozy home and sitting in front of a fire or around the dinner table with family and friends. He spent years restoring a vintage home and gardens to a special place that the whole family enjoyed. He honed his woodworking and stonemasonry skills in the process, building a stone wall that a New Englander would be proud of. Even after retirement and a move to Greensburg, home improvement played a large role in his life. Kevin also loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed hiking the Middle Creek trails. He was a loving husband, son, brother, uncle, and friend.

In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by two sisters, Melinda “Mindy” S., wife of Robert Sheaffer, Karen K., wife of Mark Mertz; nieces and nephews, Jason, Angela, Gabe, Gordon, Jamie, Julie and Lara.

Our dearest wife, mother, grandmother and friend will be deeply missed. Our greatest comfort is knowing she is with Jesus whom she often spoke fondly of and dearly loved!

Norma was the daughter of Omar and Annie (Zook) Stoltzfus.

She lovingly leaves behind her best friend, her rock and her right arm, Douglas Ramer, whom she married on September 24, 1983. Doug and Norma were members of Cornerstone Mennonite Fellowship Church in Ephrata, PA.

She spoke warmth and connection into the lives of each of their three children and nine grandchildren. She loved their visits, babysitting and hot summer pool days. All are surviving, daughter Emily, wife of Travis Rutt of Ephrata, PA , son Justin, husband of Kelsey Ramer of Lititz, PA, son Travis, husband of Chelsea Ramer of Manheim, PA ; nine grandchildren, Maya, Dawson, Emerson, Colton and Eliana Rutt, Avery, Remington, Everhett, Adelyn Ramer, two brothers Jonas, husband of Rachel Stoltzfus of Pine Grove, PA, David, husband of Linda Stoltzfus of Landrum, SC; sister Hilda Martin, wife of Clyde Martin of Bethel PA, sister-in-law Sara Stoltzfus of Myerstown, PA and numerous nieces and nephews.

Norma’s parents, Omar and Annie (Zook) Stoltzfus of Pine Grove, PA, brother Melvin preceded her in death.

During her declining health journey Norma loved her sitting room overlooking the rolling hills, grazing cattle and many types of birds visiting her feeders. On weaker days she spoke softly her encouraging words of “God’s got this.” “All for Jesus.” “He is so good.” With visitors she shared, gratefully, who brought this plant, that flower, the soups and meals.

Norma spent many hours at Lighthouse Thrift Store, feeling well or not so well, sorting through bags and boxes of donated clothing items. Frequently she would delight over a fun find for a grandchild or another. All the while encouraging the team of volunteers with her dry humor, cheerful comments and one on one chats during her rest breaks. She was a joy and will be greatly missed by her grieving family and friends.

A viewing will be held on Monday, March 11, 2024, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM, at New Beginnings Charis Fellowship Church, 430 E. Lincoln Avenue, Myerstown. An additional viewing will be held on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, from 9 to 10 AM, at the church, followed by her funeral service at 10 AM. Interment will follow the service and take place in Meckville Mennonite Cemetery, 1020 Meckville Rd, Bethel.
