Obituary Preview: James Kenneth Rhoades, 77, Kokomo, passed away on Thursday April 21, 2022, at his home.  He was born in Wabash, IN., on July 28, 1944, to the late Glenn K. and Lois (Crane) Rhoades.
James was a 1962 graduate of Wabash High School. He worked for the Chrysler Corporation as a Job setter and retired after 30 years of service.  He was a member of the debate team and band at Wabash High School.  He was an avid swimmer, who enjoyed teaching his kids how to swim.  He loved going on the family vacation every year to Yogi Bear Campground, where he enjoyed camping, grilling, cooking, and fishing.
James is survived by his children, Glenn (Kimberly) Rhoades, Sheila (Shannon) Rhoades, Stephen Rhoades and Jeremy Rhoades; grandchildren, Dustin Rhoades, Kelsie Rhoades, Rachael Rhoades, Courtney Rhoades, Jeremiah Rhoades, Jacqueline Rhoades, Jade Rhoades, Israel Rhoades, Autumn Rhoades and Willow Rhoades; great grandchildren, Harper, Samuel, Noah, Kyen, Gia and Grayson; and the mother of their children, Sherry C. Rhoades.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Phyllis Joan Scott - January 03, 1939 - April 13, 2022

Obituary Preview: Phyllis Joan Scott, 83, Kokomo, passed away peacefully Wednesday April 13, 2022, at 9:02 pm surrounded by her family. She was born January 3, 1939, in Tipton County, to the late Earl and Frances (Rice) Conwell. On January 16, 1966, she married Fred W. Scott Sr. and he preceded her in death on November 18, 2009.
She graduated from Kokomo High School. She worked as a custodian at Western High School for 20 years and retired in 1992. She loved having family meals around the big family table and loved having her grandkids stay the night with her.  She is a breast cancer survivor and enjoyed watching Hallmark and Family Feud. She loved playing Bingo and Euchre with her friends at the Senior Center.
Phyllis is survived by children, Tom (Teresa) Smith, Jean (Denny) Heaton, Kelly (Clyde) Petrey, Fred W. Scott Jr., Kevin Scott, William (Diana) Scott and Jackie Long; grandchildren, Jason, Michael, Kim, Jennifer, Damon, Kasey, Brock, Cristy, Kristina, Matt, Andy, Cara, Jessica, Matt, Brenton, Brandon, Luke, Trisha and Nicole; several great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

She was born at home in Howard County on June 9, 1933, the daughter of the late Warren and Mary Jane (Clark) Quakenbush. On June 12, 1951, she married James Rubush in Frankfort, IN, and he survives.
Helen was a 1951 graduate of Western High School. She worked as a homemaker all her life who made taking care of her family a priority. She was an avid reader. Helen enjoyed tending to her flowers and vegetable garden. She was a skilled quilter and sewer. She was a loving wife of 70 years and she adored her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband James, she is survived by her children, William F. Maude (Brazill) O'Rourke - April 06, 1929 - April 11, 2022

Obituary Preview: It is with profound sadness that we announce that Maude Brazill O’Rourke, 93, Kokomo, Indiana, passed away peacefully 6:03 pm April 11, 2022, at Bloom at Kokomo. She was born in Battle Harbor, Labrador, Canada, on April 6,1929, the daughter of Lavinia Quentin Brazill and Stanley Whitbourne Brazill. She is survived by her brother, Hogarth;and pre-deceased by her 4 brothers and 3 sisters.  On June 1, 1950, she married Norman Elsas O’Rourke, a decorated USAF veteran served for 26 years, he preceded her in death on September 5, 2012.  She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Maude worked alongside her husband at a successful family-owned restaurant, Country Gal’s Kitchen in Montgomery. Alabama.  After retiring, she and her husband relocated to Kokomo, Indiana, to be close to their extended family. She was a very caring person who will be missed by family and friends alike.
A beloved mother, she is survived by her daughters Lillian Gillar and her husband, Albert of Sunrise, Florida; and Kathy Young and her husband, Jeff of Russiaville, Indiana.
Affectionately known as “Nana” (a role she relished) to her grandchildren: James Boley and his wife, Rebekah (and her son Ethan Kinney), of Kokomo, Indiana; Clint Boley of Kokomo, Indiana; David Young of Russiaville, Indiana; Kyle Young and his wife, Carly, currently residing in Dublin.Ireland; Christina Ujj and her husband, Bence of Marietta, Georgia; Kimberly Kozak and her husband Brian of Ocala, Florida; and Tiffany Gillar of Gainesville, Florida. She is the blessed great-grandmother of Tanner Boley, Konnor Boley, Sydnie Boley, Taylor Boley, Ashtin Boley, all of Kokomo, Indiana; Grayson Young of Dublin, Ireland; and Julia Ujj of Marietta, Georgia.

He was born in Kokomo on March 24, 1949, the son of the late John Henry Carver Sr. and Amelia Ann (Krych) Carver. On April 15, 1985, he married Ellen Rosenbush, and she preceded him in death on August 16, 2006.
John graduated high school at St. Joan of Arc. He worked as a foreman at Pepco Springs and conducted inspections. He loved model trains, gardening, and assisting others with short wave radio broadcasting. John was an avid reader and he dabbled in writing.
He is survived by his children, Doug Rosenbush, Michal Noble, Jon Patrick Carver; brothers, Jim Carver, Tom Carver; best friend, Sherry Farnsworth; grandchildren, Danielle Featherstone, Robert Rosenbush, Joshua Rosenbush, Aleshia Marie Lair, Jacob Noble, Jonathan Noble; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Henry Carver Sr. and Amelia Carver; and wife, Ellen Carver.

Robert "Bob" Charles Morphew - December 06, 1941 - April 03, 2022

Obituary Preview: Robert “Bob” Charles Morphew, 80, Kokomo, went home to meet his Lord and Savior at 3:48 pm Sunday, April 3, 2022. He was getting ready for church, but instead was taken to worship with the angels and saints.  He was born December 6, 1941, in Marianna, Arkansas, the son of the late Payton and Maudie (Whisenhunt) Morphew. On June 20, 1959, he married Wandavee (Payton) Morphew in Anderson, and she survives.
Bob was a 1959 graduate of Alexandria High School. He surrendered to the ministry on Sunday, September 29, 1968, and preached his first sermon that very evening.  He received his Master’s Degree in Theology from Texas Baptist Institute in 1976 and a teaching certificate from Texas A&M University. Bob taught many seminary classes over the years in Texas, Indiana, and Michigan.  Bob shared the word of God from childhood, later pastoring churches in Indiana, Ohio, Texas, and Arkansas, most recently at First Landmark Baptist Church in Kokomo for the past 28 years. Bob loved spending time with his family and friends, gardening, carpentry, and most of all, leading others to Christ.

Sr and Ethel (Mullis) Howard. On February 16, 1962, he married Dixie Lawson in Kokomo, who preceded him in death on March 29, 2019.
Ron attended Kokomo High School. He retired from Cuneo Press after 10 years of service. Ron was also the captain at Harrison Township Volunteer Fire Department for 22.5 years. He enjoyed fishing, and working out in his garage.
Ron is survived by his son, Michael (Lisa) Howard; grandchildren, Cody and Cameron Howard; siblings, Ralph (Cindy) Howard, Barbara Parks, and Marjorie (Merrill) Horho; along with several nieces and nephews.

She was born April 18, 1931, in Howard County to the late Allan and Bernice (Cox) Rayls. On March 12, 1948, she married Richard G. Mumaw in Kokomo, who preceded her in death on December 19, 2009.
Phyllis retired from Delco Electronics and worked at several flower shops in Kokomo as a floral designer. She had an artistic and creative nature. Phyllis was a member of Abundant Life Church. In 2006, at the age of 75, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Christian Ministry from Indiana Christian University.
Phyllis is survived by her two children, Denise Johnson, and Gary (Nancy) Mumaw, both of Kokomo; sister, Shirley Lindsay, Rio Rancho, NM; 7 grandchildren, Charles (Brooke) Mumaw Jr., Mary (Ron Charles) Mumaw, Melissa (Josh) Douglass, Dennis (Katie) Johnson Jr., Justin (Jenna) Mumaw, Drew Mumaw, and Derek Mumaw; and 9 great-grandchildren.

She was born in Monroe Township on August 25, 1933, the daughter of the late Russell and Ester (Small) Taylor. On May 1, 1965, she married Don Carson at the New London Friends Church, who preceded her in death on October 22, 1999.
Carolyn was a 1951 graduate of Western High School. She was a lifelong member of New London Friends Church since 1944, and the New London Eastern Star. Carolyn worked at PPG in downtown Kokomo, Higbee Body Company, and Western School Corporation as a cook, where she retired from.  Her hobbies included crocheting, knitting, cross-stitching, and sewing.
She is survived by her children, Russell “Rusty” (Barbara) Carson, Linda Marie Sardin; brother, Lewis (Mary Frances) Taylor; grandchildren, Allison (Nick) Ogle, Natasha Tones, Lanika Sardin, Tiffany Covell, and Skylar (Kaitlin) Weikart; great-grandchildren, Ava, Lakai, Laina, Austyn, Kaitlyn, and Cora; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Ester Taylor; husband, Don Carson; sisters, Virginia (John) Haynes, and Helen (Ralph) Kelly; 4 nieces; and 5 nephews.
Funeral service will be held at 2 pm Saturday, April 2, 2022 at Stout & Son Funeral Home, 200 E. Main St., Russiaville, with Pastor Jason Grant officiating. Burial will follow in New London Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 12 pm to 2 pm Saturday at the funeral home before the service. She was born in Russiaville on March 1, 1927, the daughter of the late Dudley and Lucille (Coin) Rodkey. On June 29, 1947, she married Leon Orem in their home and where they raised their family, and he survives. Last year, they celebrated 74 years of marriage.
Julia Ann was a 1945 graduate of Forest High School. She was an original member of the Fredrick Heinmiller Accordion Band. She worked as a homemaker and farm wife for 74 years. Julia Ann was a member of (Forest) Union Baptist Church where she led children’s Sunday school classes, was the Missionary Treasurer, and a member of their Fellowship Class. She was a past member of the Russiaville Home Economics Club. Julia Ann grew up cherishing her farm life. She was devoted to her family and preserving her heritage.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by their children, Raymond “Ray” Rodkey Orem, Russiaville, Donna Kay (Mark) Trenary, Forest; grandson, Ronnie (Stephanie) Orem, Forest; granddaughter Cheryl (Kevin Ridenour) Orem, Russiaville; great-grandchildren, Justin Byrd, Austin Orem, Hailey Orem, Gavin Ridenour.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Dudley and Lucille Rodkey; and son, Dudley Jay Orem.

Michael "Bryan" Johnson - June 12, 1959 - March 15, 2022

Obituary Preview: Michael “Bryan” Johnson, 62, of Hemlock, passed away 10:29 pm on March 15, 2022, at IU Health University Hospital in Indianapolis. He had his family by his side and passed after a battle with prostate cancer and a short battle of AML. He was born in Tipton, IN, on June 12, 1959, to Doris Williams and Don Johnson. On April 4, 2006, he married Melissa Morgan, and she survives.
Bryan was a 1978 graduate of Tipton High School. He has worked for 38 years at Amerigas Propane as a bulk driver. Bryan was passionate about spending time with his family. Some of his favorite things were grilling out, watching movies, helping kids and grandkids with their sports, and attending band or choir concerts. He was always there when they needed him, even if it was the advice they didn’t want to hear. He appreciated golfing with his sons and brother. Bryan was a member of Wildkat Creek Golf Course and often played in their league. He loved playing softball with his son, brothers, in-laws, or other stragglers he called family.
Bryan was very strong in his faith. He was an avid church goer and was a member of Woodland Church of God. Everybody who knew Bryan knew that he was a great man who was very loving and full of sarcasm. He would give you the shirt off his back if you needed. He always knew the right thing to say, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He will be greatly missed by those who survive him. Beverly "Sue" Thornton - January 24, 1934 - March 14, 2022

Obituary Preview: Beverly “Sue” Thornton, 88, Forest, peacefully went to be with her Lord & Savior at 3:43 pm Monday, March 14, 2022, at her home. She was born January 24, 1934, in Forest, the daughter of the late Ralph and Florence (Chapple) Milner. On May 31, 1959, she married Robert “Tex” Thornton in Dyer, IN, who preceded her in death on November 2, 2016.
Sue was a 1951 graduate of Forest High School, where she enjoyed a high level of success as a student athlete.  She was presented with the Purdue GAA award for all around excellence. She also served as the secretary and treasurer of her class.  Upon graduation, Sue wasted no time finding a job and was hired at Haynes Stellite as a quality controller. Sue and her sister Marilyn worked alternating shifts in order to provide care for their aging grandmother. While at Stellite, she met and befriended many co-workers that became lifelong friends. For recreation, Sue joined a rouge softball team sponsored by the YWCA. Her skill, talent and outgoing personality earned her a job as the Y-teen director. Many of the young athletes she mentored were so impacted by her influence that they too formed decade long friendships. Coaching brought much satisfaction but competing was Sue’s passion. She holds the record at 55 years of consecutive participation in the state tournament.  Bowling brought many new friends, adventures and even a lifelong partner as she met her husband Tex while bowling. Sue became an ambassador for the sport holding many offices and committee chairs throughout her long and colorful bowling career. She was elected to both the Kokomo and State Bowling Hall of Fames. During the summers, she played golf, mostly at the American Legion, of which she was a long time supporter. Sue prided herself in out-driving most male counter parts and won many side bets which were always donated to charities. She also excelled at cards, darts, and billiards. Sue participated in the Area IV Senior Games for many years winning numerous medals. With her family, Sue enjoyed many camping and fishing expeditions.
Sue was also a lover of the Purdue Christmas show and Beef & Boards dinner theatre. She often arranged group outings for those without transportation. She always devoted much time to community good works. She ran the area food pantry for over 30 years and oversaw the voting poles, serving as Inspector for more than 2 solid decades.
Family, faith, friends and fun were her cornerstones. Sue was willing to help better her community and church in any way asked of her. She devoutly served the Lord and honestly lived by the “Golden rule”. She earned a countless number of friends as a credit to her devotion and determination to help people live their best lives. Like George Bailey, Sue had a rich, wonderful life, she will be missed.
Sue is survived by her daughters, Nancy (Jim) Feasel, and Betsy Thornton; nieces, Rebecca (Loren) Curry, Pam (Clarence Vlasak) Wakeman, Jennifer (Simon) Ladd, Marla (Kirk) Caldwell, and Darlene (Jim) Hensley; nephews, John (Bunny) Wakeman, Robert (Peg) Wakeman, and J.J. Thornton; brother, Jerry Milner; and beloved K-9 companion, Princess. Sue was also the birth mother of Doug Rogers with whom she developed an affectionate relationship several years ago while he was researching his biological roots. Doug has added 2 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren to the family.

He was born in Howard County on December 19,1934, the son of the late Wayne N. and Tressa Rose (Lutsch) Gore. He has shared the last 23 years of life with his love and significant other, Joyce Hughes, and she survives.
Dick was first employed at Cuneo Press for 4 years then was the District Manager of the Indianapolis Star and News. Dick proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1955 through 1959 as an aircraft mechanic. He also served for 5 years in the Reserves. He worked at Haynes Stellite for 8 years then served at the Chrysler Casting Plant as a metallurgist for 28 years until his retirement in 1993. While at Chrysler, he served on the Bargaining Committee and as a Union Steward for Union #1302. Following retirement, he used his time volunteering at local food banks and as the President of the Senior Center Advisor Board. He was a proud member of the Back to Basics Alcoholics Anonymous group. In January 2022, he received a token and certificate for achieving 40 years of sobriety. He was a member of the Eagles, Moose Lodge, Elks Lodge, and American Legion. He adored his children, grandchildren, and companion Joyce. Some of his hobbies include wood working, landscaping, golfing, and boxing. He loved ball room dancing and was a member of the Kokomo Ballroom Dance Club.
Dick is survived by his daughter, Justina (Steven) Arnold; significant other, Joyce Hughes; sisters, Freda Tharp, Margaret Ann Goldsberry; extended family, Debbie (Nick) Graves, Pamela Kinsey, Jeff Hughes, Jim (Mindy) Hughes; sister-in-law, Beverly Gore; biological grandchildren, Brooke, Jenny, Jason, Brieonna, Austin; special ballroom dance partners, Jordyn, Haley and Gracie; extended family grandchildren, James, Marcie, Kyle, Adam, Melissa, Charlie; biological great-grandchildren, Colston, Destiny, Gavin, Micah; extended great-grandchildren, Austin, Jordyn, Haley, Jocelyn, Maddie, Gabe, Ledger, Emeri; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

He enjoyed taking rides cross country with his wife and many friends. He was a member of Milwaukee Iron for 35 years. Steve enjoyed watching cowboy tv shows and often wore his black cowboy hat. He loved all his grandchildren and appreciated spending time with them.

Ron was a 1955 graduate of Forest High School.  He worked for Chrysler as a machine repairman for 36 years and retired in 1992.  He was a member of the West Point Christian Church, where he served as the Deacon for years.  He was a member of the Russiaville Masonic Lodge # 82 for 60 years, he served as a 32° Scottish Rite Freemason at the Valley of Indianapolis for 58 years, and the UAW # 685.  He loved watching sports, especially his grandkids games. His favorite team was the Chicago Cubs, he spent time in Arizona watching spring training, and he attended games at Wrigley Field. He was on the bowling team at the Eagles. He enjoyed spending time with his family and loved traveling and playing cards with his friends.

Nashalla was a homemaker who enjoyed taking care of her four children and the children of multiple families through the years. She loved her family first and foremost.  She loved talking on the phone with her family and friends. She always put the needs of others and their happiness first.  She always welcomed family and friends into her home, making her home the neighborhood hang out.   Coffee pot was always on and ready for anyone who dropped by to have a chat and to smoke and joke.  She was feisty but the most compassionate person. Her life and role as a daughter, wife, mother, and Mimi, is where she grew her strength and left her legacy. She will live in the hearts of those she touched. To the world, she was mother, to our family-The World.

Wilma was a devoted homemaker who loved spending time with her daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She spent many hours with them playing games, doing arts and crafts and sewing, crocheting and cooking. She also enjoyed traveling, camping and caring for her cats. She was a member of Scircleville United Methodist Church and was active in the church’s womens group, the Willing Workers.
Wilma is survived by her daughter, Tami (Rob) Breeding, two granddaughters, Marissa (Jon) Moore and Veronica Breeding, four great-grandchildren, Everett, Isaac and Kathryn Moore and Emily Marcel, special niece, Rita Dunn, several nieces and nephews, two sisters-in-law, Marge Stone and Ceal Stone and her loyal guard dog, Buster.

After his military service, he worked at Delco Electronics in salaried suggestions and retired after more than 30 years there. Bob enjoyed gardening, photography, and playing golf. His favorite local course to play was Chippendale Golf Club. He also scouted out other courses out of state to play at with his wife, Jane. Bob was a peaceful and honest man who loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was his grandchildren’s biggest fan and attended all their sporting events.

He earned a Bachelor of Music in 1953 from Oklahoma Baptist University. Joel achieved a Bachelor of Divinity and a Master of Divinity both from Southwestern Baptist Seminary. Joel’s life work was devoted to pastoring at several Baptist Churches across Oklahoma and Indiana. All of his family was proud of his conversion to Christ and serving people to help them do the same.
Joel is survived by his sons, Joel Blanton Jr., Jeffrey (Charlene) Blanton; 10 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
