Beatrice Tumm - July 21, 1930 - November 25, 2020

Departed: 11/25/2020 (Altoona)
Obituary Preview: Beatrice Marie (Knudtson) Tumm, 90 passed away early Wednesday, November 25th with her children by her side. We prayed, sang songs and listened to hymns as she peacefully left us here on earth and joined her husband Bill and Jesus in the heavenly realms. Beatrice was born July 21st, 1930 to Selmer and Bernice (Nelson) Knudtson-Fanter in Menomonee, WI. She grew up in the city of Eau Claire, and attended Hillview Terrace School until the 8th grade. Bea worked at Gillette in Eau Claire, on the tire assembly line and at Sacred Heart Hospital in the housekeeping department. She desired to be a nurse, but unable to return to school, she became a nurses aid at the Fall Creek Valley Nursing Home. For 12 years she was able to extend love and care to people who needed it the most. She retired in 1979.
Beatrice loved to dance. Every Saturday she could be found at Fournier's Ballroom. This is where she found her McDreamy, William Tumm, the love of her life for 70 years. They were married on August 5th 1950 at Concordia Lutheran Church, Eau Claire. She quickly transformed from city girl to country wife. Bea loved the farm, together this is where they raised their 4 children. She became a leader for the Country Cousins 4-H club, enjoyed creating beautiful flower gardens, getting together with neighbors for card parties, having relatives and friends over for visits and cooking. She loved to cook, her specialty food was scalloped potatoes and baked beans. They became a favorite request at parties and church potlucks. Bea became a member of St. James Trinity Lutheran Church upon marriage to Bill. She served on the Board of Education and was active in Ladies Aid for many years. Embroidering, watching the Packers, Brewers and Badgers were a few of her favorite things but what she loved the most was spending time with her family! Babysitting the grandkids, great grandkids, providing a resting place after school, before church and sport activities (including meals), cheering on the sidelines at the Cricket and Huskies sporting events, to playing cards (especially kings corner & up and down the river). She treasured every minute! She taught us what it means to have faith and how to love unconditionally, her arms were always wide open, a smile on her face, food on the table, and laughter in her soul. We are forever grateful to God for sharing her life with us. “Keep dancing”.
Beatrice is survived by her son James Tumm (Mary) of Augusta; daughters: June Menard (Ronald) of Eau Claire, Jan Grohn (Warren) of Fall Creek, and Jolene Kurth of Fall Creek; grandchildren: Kennedy, Koen and Kiefer Tumm, Emelia and Zoey Tumm, and Ava and Ivy Kurth; brothers: Edward Knudtson, Arthur Knudtson (Florence) both of Eau Claire; sister Ione Anderson (John Thesenvitz) of St. Pail, MN; brother in laws: Alvin Cheever of Racine, Leonard Tumm of Clear Lake, Ronald Tumm (Mary) of Fall Creek, Rolland Lee of Black River Falls; sister in laws: Shirley Jungerberg, Lois Geske Linse both of Fall Creek; close family friends: Janet Preston of Eau Claire, Timothy Kurth of Osseo, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
Beatrice was preceded in death by her husband William, parents Selmer and Bernice Knudston-Fanter, step father William Fanter, sisters: Virginia Tumm, Edna Cheever, Lois Knudtson, Phyllis Radle; brother in laws: Herman Radle, Melvin Geske, Fritz Linse, Howard Jungerberg, Arnold Hass, Fredrick Tumm; sister in laws: Betty (Tumm) Hass, Amanda (Tumm) Lee; nephews: Jerry Knudtson, Gordy Radle, David Tumm, Dennis Tumm and Howard Linse.

He enjoyed dartball at church, horseshoe, playing cards with family, friends and neighbors. He cheered for the Crickets, North Huskies, Brewers, Packers, Badgers and Bucks. His favorite athletes were his kids, grandkids and great grandkids. Near or far he was there to cheer them on, not onlin in sports but in life's little lessons. People-Bill loved people, from a friendly wave to everyone he met driving down the road, giving away produce from his gardens, pulling pranks and sharing stories. He taught us all what it means to enjoy life, to be kind, forgiving and have faith in God above. Warren John Bowe - January 15, 1963 - October 18, 2020

Departed: 10/18/2020 (Altoona)
Obituary Preview: Warren John Bowe, 57, of Chippewa Falls, WI, passed away on Sunday, October 18, 2020, in Eau Claire, WI, after a hard fought battle with Covid- 19. Warren was born January 15, 1963, to Ronald and Nevena Bowe in Chippewa Falls. He attended St. Mary’s Catholic School and Marathon High School in Marathon, WI.
Warren graduated from UW-Eau Claire and later earned a Master's Degree from Viterbo College. Warren taught high school English for 35 years at Hillsboro, Cornell, Regis, and Chippewa Falls before retiring in June 2020. During those years, he also directed countless plays and coached hundreds of students in speaking competitions. On paper, these experiences look typical, but Warren was anything but a typical teacher. Warren’s students soon found out that he was larger than life with his wit and humor and dedication to help them succeed. Over the past few weeks, so many former students reached out to tell a story of how he secretly gave money to have friends buy them lunch when they were going through a hard time or when he would give them “pet names” of endearment. All the stories were of how Warren affected them positively and deeply.
In addition to being chosen to present at several national conferences, Warren received the Kohl State Teacher award and was honored to attend the Excellence in Education banquet countless times with his students.
In addition to loving his family and friends and making them laugh until they cried, Warren enjoyed reading, writing, collecting antiques, gardening, travelling, and chickens.
Warren is survived by his children, Benjamin and Grace (Justin Babel); beloved grandson Jonathan and Jonathan’s mother Mandy Hayden; mother Nevena Bowe; two brothers Marc Bowe and Aaron Bowe; former wife Pam Bowe; and many aunts and uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father Ronald, grandparents Ralph and Marion Bowe, grandparents Roman and Verena Bowe, and several aunts and uncles and cousins.
The family will be creating an educational scholarship in Warren's name in the near future. THE GRAVESIDE SERVICES FOR WARREN HAS BEEN POST-PONED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE!

Christian Henry Grottke - February 15, 1973 - January 18, 2020

Departed: 01/18/2020 (Altoona)
Obituary Preview: Christian Grottke, age 46, passed away January 18, 2020 with his loving family by his side.
Chris was born in Marshfield, Wisconsin to Henry and Margaret Grottke on February 15, 1973 and grew up on the family farm in Chili. He graduated from Marshfield Senior High and went on to attend the University of Wisconsin Wood County in Marshfield. It was there that Chris, ever thoughtful, helped a student who was missing her choir folder. He didn’t know it at the time, but this was the introduction to his future wife Kara. They were married on June 8, 1994 at Zion Lutheran Church in Granton, Wisconsin. In 1995, they moved to Eau Claire. He worked for Ferrellgas and delivered propane and often joked he was the Hank Hill of west central Wisconsin.
Chris was a loving, caring husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Chris loved drama and music. In high school and college, he was a cast member in numerous plays and musicals. He had an affection for classic cars. Thanks to much help from his friend, Brian, he was able to restore his prized VW Thing. He treasured time spent taking family and friends for a ride in his bright green “Thing.” Most recently, he lovingly started restoring his dad’s first car: a Model A Ford truck. He had a love for all things Star Trek. He enjoyed playing many types of sports, but especially basketball, and for years, he would play at church every Sunday evening with a group of close buddies. He relished sharing his love of classic TV and movies with his kids. Chris had an awesome singing voice and many a fun-filled night was spent singing Karaoke at the old Sea Horse Inn in Eau Claire, and, most recently, thanks to Chris’s electronic ingenuity, in his living room with family and friends. Chris (aka Dangling Chad) and Kara (aka Princess Karaoke) also were able to perform together for several years as part of the Holcombe United Methodist Church’s annual Christmas Madrigal Dinner Theater. He enjoyed spending time at both the cabin in Chili on the family farm, where he looked forward to the gun deer hunting weekends each year, and around the neighborhood poker table with friends and family.
Chris’s faith and love for the Lord was such a large part of who he was. He felt a calling to serve God and the church in many capacities. He held many positions throughout his years as a member of both Epiphany Lutheran Church and, most recently, Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Eau Claire. He served as Eau Claire Lutheran School Board President, on the Board of Children’s Youth and Ministry for both congregations, as well as President at Our Redeemer. One of his most treasured moments on this earth was serving as a Youth Leader for Epiphany and Our Redeemer. He felt so blessed and privileged to have been given the opportunity to not only share his time and talents with youth, but also to share this with his four children and grandchildren. Chris has always been able to seamlessly relate to youth, and he would jokingly share that it was because he never really grew up. He was still that twelve-year-old inside which is something so many loved about him.
Chris is survived by his wife, Kara. Children Kellie Slimak (fiancé Matt Markham), Jacob (Bethany) Talledge, Megan Grottke, and Lila Grottke; his grandchildren, Hunter, Natalee, and Hollis; his mother Margaret Grottke; brother, Stephen Grottke, as well as, many family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father Henry Grottke.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It is often published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who need to know about the passing. They can also help to notify people of funeral or memorial service arrangements and provide a sense of closure for loved ones.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. The writer may gather information from family members, friends, and other sources to create a comprehensive and accurate tribute.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. It may also include details about the funeral or memorial service.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform it will be published on. Typically, it ranges from 100 to 500 words. A longer obituary may be suitable for an online platform, while a shorter one may be more appropriate for a newspaper.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and requirements. They may have specific guidelines for content, length, and formatting. Be prepared to provide detailed information about the deceased and payment for the publication fee.

What is the cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost varies depending on the publication or platform. Newspapers typically charge by the word or line, while online platforms may offer package deals or flat fees. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars.

Can I publish an obituary online only?

Yes, there are many online platforms that allow you to publish an obituary without printing it in a newspaper. These platforms often offer additional features such as guest books, condolences, and memorial pages.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe varies depending on the publication or platform. Newspapers typically publish obituaries within a few days of submission, while online platforms may publish immediately or within 24 hours.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

It may be possible to make corrections or updates to an obituary after publication, but this depends on the publication or platform's policies. Be sure to check with them before submitting any changes.

What is a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, date of death, and funeral service details. It is often used when a full obituary cannot be published due to time constraints or other limitations.

What is the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is a written notice announcing someone's passing and providing biographical information, while a eulogy is a speech or written tribute delivered at a funeral or memorial service to celebrate the person's life and legacy.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as part of their estate planning or as a way to ensure their life story is told accurately. This can be a unique opportunity for self-reflection and storytelling.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search online archives of newspapers or visit local libraries that maintain archives of past issues. Many genealogy websites and online databases also offer access to historical obituaries.

Can I republish an old obituary?

If you have permission from the original publisher or copyright holder, you may be able to republish an old obituary. Be sure to check copyright laws and obtain necessary permissions before doing so.

What is an online memorial page?

How do I create an online memorial page?

You can create an online memorial page through various websites and platforms that offer this service. Some popular options include Legacy.com, Tributes.com, and Memorials.com.

This depends on the platform or website where you're publishing the obituary. Some allow links or attachments, while others may not. Check with the platform's guidelines before submitting your content.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

The duration varies depending on the platform or website. Some keep online obituaries available indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period (e.g., one year).

Can I request corrections or removal of an online obituary?

If you find errors in an online obituary or wish to have it removed for any reason, contact the platform or website directly with your request. They will guide you through their process for making corrections or removing content.

Are there any specific regulations around writing an obituary?

Can I use humor in an obituary?
