Jeremy Ryan Melvin - September 28, 1976 - October 04, 2022

Departed: 10/04/2022 (Florence)
Obituary Preview: We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Jeremy Ryan Melvin (“J.R.”) of Union, KY age 46. J.R. passed away peacefully on October 4, 2022, surrounded by his loving family after a 4-month battle with NKT Cell Lymphoma. Doctors explained that he was only 1% of all lymphoma patients in the US battling this type of cancer….so he referred to himself as a “1 percenter” and we joked that just like in all other areas of his life he was special and unique. We pray that they continue to learn more about this type of cancer so that others who are faced with this rare disease will have more available resources to fight so, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The James Cancer Center at OSU at giveto.osu.edu. J.R. was born on September 28, 1976, to Jim and Debbie Melvin and was raised in Moon, Kentucky where he was an adventurous young boy who wasn’t afraid of anything. He loved all sports and kept his family busy going to baseball games throughout his summers. He would often say to his parents ‘one more time’ (which his youngest son, Colten inherited). Spending time with his sister, cousins and grandparents was an important part of his childhood and he had great childhood memories of fishing with them, rolling them down hills and being chased by frogs. He loved deeply and cared greatly for others (which his oldest son, Hayden inherited). J.R. would make friends everywhere that he went and cared for them whether they were near or far and even if he hadn’t talked to them in years, he would try to support them or catch up with them just to check in. After graduating from Johnson Central High School, J.R. attended Morehead State University where he received his bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Sciences. While attending MSU he joined Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. This fraternity of brothers provided him with lasting friendships, he was so proud to say that he was a Sig Ep! During college he also met his ‘happily ever after’ partner, Jennifer. They were married on July 10, 1999, and went on to have 3 amazing children together, Madison Avery Melvin (18), Hayden Gage Melvin (16) and Colten Riley Melvin (13). He worked for Information Resources Incorporated for over 14 years and made friends that became family through his years with the company. He also taught Ski and Snowboarding lessons as an instructor at Perfect North. He loved teaching others a sport that he loved and until his last hospital stay was still promoting the slopes at Timberline and Perfect North to any nurse or doctor that sounded interested. He was a talker (which his oldest, Maddy inherited)! He would talk to anyone and somehow ended up being friends with them by the end of the conversation. He was truly interested in learning about others. J.R. was a lifelong learner who always wanted to better himself in all areas of his life. He had big plans to take his family on more ski adventures and hiking adventures out west. He also loved his golf outings and fantasy football leagues with his family and friends. He was a member at Eagle Creek Country Club and loved playing golf with his many leagues of friends from all around. J.R. was the best teammate or partner anyone could ask for (in life and in games). He loved supporting his kids whether it be on the sidelines at a soccer game, being the lead actor in a short film or giving tips on the bowling alley. He was so proud of all his kids and loved being there for them. He was the life of any party or event and would just brighten up the room when he entered it with his smile, jokes and laughter. He was so strong and optimistic through all the hurdles that he faced and was always trying to make things better for his family and friends. He was one of a kind and will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure to know him. J.R. Melvin was preceded in death by his grandparents, Charles and Myrtle Melvin and his grandpa, Cozy Salyer. J.R. is survived by his loving wife, Jennifer Melvin and 3 amazing children who each have so much of their daddy within them (Madison, Hayden and Colten Melvin), his parents, Debbie and Jim Melvin, his grandma, Carma Salyer and his sister, Josie White. J.R. loved family more than anything and he will be missed by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, brothers and sisters-in- law and his in-laws. Visitation will take place on Saturday, October 15, 2022, at First Church of Christ, 6080 Camp Ernst Rd, Burlington, KY 41005 from 10:00 am until the time of funeral service at 12:00 pm. Reception will follow. Private Burial Service for family members only will be at the Frank Brown Cemetery, Moon, KY. Stith Funeral Home, Florence, is assisting the family. Online condolences and memories may be shared with the family at www.stithfuneralhomes.com
