Obituary Preview: Donald Eugene Holden, 69, Maxwell, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Donald was born on June 10, 1954, in Greenfield, to Dale and Betty (Springer) Holden. Donald is a 1973 graduate of Greenfield Central High School. On February 22, 1975, he married the love of his life, Debbie A. Johnson.
Donald was a tremendously loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend to all who knew him and will be sadly missed. Donald was self-employed with Holden Construction, recently retiring in September 2023. His love for his wife, children, grandchildren, and friends was unmeasurable. Donald worked alongside, fished together, and raised his family with his best friend, his loving wife, Debbie. In addition to family, fishing was a close second. Donald was ranked 6th in the State of Indiana with The Hoosier Open Tournaments. He and friends would additionally travel to surrounding states finding their favorite fishing holes. Donald was also a part of The Chelsea Bass Masters Club out of Madison, IN. Donald also enjoyed deer and pheasant hunting and camping with friends.
Donald is survived by his loving wife Debbie of 49 years; their daughters, Carrie (Travis) Tincher and Heather (Chris) Forsberg; grandchildren: Matthew (Stacie) Bowman, Alex (Garrett) Bowman, Kobie (Mel) Bowman, Shelby Tincher, and Brayden (Hannah) Tincher; great-grandchildren: Addie Bowman, Ella Bowman, Everleigh Shores, and Jace Bowman; brother, Larry (Vickie) Holden; nephews, Scotty Holden, Tony (Robin) Holden, and Paul (Jodi) Holden; and many, many fishing buddies.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Charles Holden. Obituary Preview: Joseph (Joe) Alan Turpin passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his wife and children on May 19th, 2024. Joe was born May 14th, 1955 in New Castle, Indiana to the late Arnold and Coleen (Lee) Turpin. He was a graduate of Knightstown High School and Purdue University. Throughout his distinguished career spanning over four decades at Reilly Tar & Chemical, Eli Lilly, Elanco, and S-Matrix, Joe made significant contributions to pharmaceutical development and lab automation. His passion for science was infectious, evident in his involvement with the Boy Scouts Explorer and Chemistry is a Blast programs, as well as his instrumental role in advancing techniques for emission and fuel testing in the Indy Racing League. Over his career, he had many scientific publications, contributed to the commercialization of several Lilly/Elanco products, and received numerous awards, including the Lilly Research Laboratories President’s Award and the SelectScience 2020 Analytical Science Webinar of the Year. Beyond his technical prowess, Joe was revered as a supportive colleague and mentor, known for his passion for science, innovative spirit, and penchant for mischief, making him an unforgettable presence in the scientific community.
In his free time, he enjoyed reading, gardening, wrestling, water sports, James Bond, and the beach. The joy of his life was his family. He spent his children’s youth coaching wrestling, baseball, soccer, and maintaining a near-perfect record in the pinewood derby. He especially loved spending time with his 11 grandchildren. Joe cherished moments spent with his 11 grandchildren, whether it was traveling, grilling out at home, or enjoying summer activities like tubing and skiing. He could often be found watching a grandchild at a sporting, theater, or dance event. His strong faith was fundamental to him throughout his entire life and sustained him during his three year battle with cancer. He spent the last 3 weeks of his life witnessing to everyone he spoke to.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Beth, of 44 years; children: Annie (Chris) Wing, Joseph R. (Debra) Turpin, Matthew (Krista) Turpin, Kyle Turpin, Michael (Lisa) Turpin; 11 grandchildren: Brooklyn, Bethany, Avery, Zoey, Olivia, Brennan, Kathryn, Elliana, Brylee, Logan, and Marie; and siblings Debbie (Pat) Fausset, Jon (Linda) Turpin, Annette (Danny) Douglas, Scott (Beth) Turpin, Steve (Liz) Turpin, and James (Laura) Turpin.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Coleen Turpin and son, Andrew Robert Turpin.
In loving memory, we honor his legacy of laughter, humility, and unyielding pursuit of knowledge, forever inspired by the depth of his love for family.
A Celebration of Life will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 28th at Park Chapel Christian Church, 1176 E. McKenzie Road, Greenfield, Indiana 46140. Visitation will be11:00 a.m. until 1:00p.m at the church before the service. Private graveside services will be at a later date at Park Cemetery, Greenfield.

Mary was an X-ray technician for over 25 years and retired from St. Francis Hospital in Indianapolis. Her passion for helping others, kindness, and endless patience defined her. Mary’s dedication to family was evident in her tireless devotion to her husband and children. In addition to her faith, her interests included sewing, gardening, and antiquing. She also enjoyed visiting and traveling with her children and grandchildren.
Mary is survived by her loving children: sons Sam (Darla), Pat (Missy), David (Donna), and Kevin (Tricia); daughters Kay (Bob) Graham-Bright, Fay (Thad) Lanham and Anna Davenport; grandchildren, Jason Hoskins, Jennifer (Mike) Graham Clark, Ky Bright, Taylor Graham, Maddie Lanham, Ryan Graham, Aaron (Bayley) Graham, Sarah Lanham, Abby Davenport, Kellen Graham, Tyler Graham and Andrew Graham. Norman was born on April 23, 1942, in Shelby County, to Earl and Edith (Thurston) Pyle. He is a 1960 graduate of Triton High School, Fairland, IN. Norman joined the U.S. Army. He married the love of his life, Janet Sue Ortel on August 30, 1969.
Norman worked at Ford Motor Company in quality control for many years. Alongside working at Ford, he started his own business, N.L. Pyle & Son Roofing Service. After Ford, Norman transitioned to Ryobi, also in quality control, before retiring in 2002. Norman and Janet were members of Pleasant View Baptist Church. Norman’s hobbies included fishing, taking care of the lawn, painting-by-number, baking, and flower & vegetable gardening. But his highlights were watching his grandchildren play in their sporting events of basketball, soccer, football, softball, and dance.
Norman is survived by his loving wife Janet of 55 years; children: Lynetta (Brent) Freudenstein, Aaron (Katina) Pyle, and Daryl Pyle; 6 awesome grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; sister, Jean Sprong; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Liza Fox; and sister, Martha Magness. Visitation will be on Friday, May 10, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Pleasant View Baptist Church, 12442 Southeastern Avenue, Indianapolis, with the service immediately following at 1:00 p.m., officiated by Pastor Mark Kern. Sammy was born on February 21, 2014, in Fort Wayne, IN, to Samuel and Nichole (Hinkle) Teusch. Sammy attended 4th grade at Greenfield Intermediate School.
Sammy was a tremendously loving, laughing, encompassing, and accepting young man. He was quick to make friends, knew no stranger, meant no harm to anyone, never sat still, had the biggest heart along with the best smile. He loved to fish, play video games and play with robots, hike, jump into ponds, be in the great outdoors, and play soccer. At such a young age, he was well traveled across the world and accepted all cultures and ethnicities. He loved spicey food and relished when he got to choose dinner; always asking for spicey Ramen noodles. Sammy was loved by all, thoroughly embraced hugs, and had big plans for the future.

Obituary Preview: Lt. Col. Theodore James Rath, 79, New Palestine, passed away on May 2, 2024, with his loving family by his side. Ted was born on May 16, 1944, in Cleveland, OH, to Theodore August and Anna Zelda (Friday) Rath. Ted graduated from Ohio Northern University with a bachelor’s degree in engineering.
Ted’s first passion was being with his loving family and friends. He was compassionate but loved to joke around. He could often be found golfing with the same group of men for over 40 years. He loved to travel and was often referred to as the world-traveler, no one really knowing if he was ever home or visiting another country. He was a tremendously loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and friend to all who knew him and will be sadly missed. Ted’s second passion was proudly representing our country serving in the Army over the course of 29 years, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Over the course of serving, he earned many medals and badges inclusive of Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Purple Heart. Ted was also employed by Naval Avionics and Raytheon as an engineer. And Ted’s third passion was being a man of faith. He worshiped the Lord and was a member of Knightstown Friends Church and New Palestine United Methodist Church.
Ted is survived by his loving wife Cheryl (Aldrich) Rath of 8 years; his children, Tiffany Rath Hardy and Shelley (Charlie) Rath Decker, and April (Nick) Ernstes, Seth (Tiffany) Johnson, and Holly (Greg) Tisdale; 7 awesome grandchildren: James, Tyler, Justin, Charlie, Brooks, Jared, and Paige; siblings, Dody Oblak and Kathy Curtis; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews; and special and supporting friends, Steve & Kathie Reese and Lee (the late Jan) Hardy.

Roy E. Blessinger - January 18, 1947 - April 22, 2024

Obituary Preview: After putting up an extremely courageous fight with cancer over the last few years, beloved Roy E. Blessinger, 77, Greenfield, was called home to be with his late parents and sister. Roy passed away on April 22, 2024. Roy was born on January 18, 1947, in Rushville, IN, to Roy and Margaret Ellen (Benfield) Blessinger. He is a 1965 graduate of Carthage High School. On September 2, 1966, he married the love of his life, Janis Kay Petry.
Roy was a romantic at heart and loved to spoil his wife with flowers, love notes, scavenger hunts around the house, compliments, and overall support. In their younger years, they were both volunteers at the Greenfield Boys Club. Roy belonged to many organizations, including JayCee’s of Greenfield, Pioneer Club, and NMLRA. He also belonged to the IBEW as well as Bear Force (security) overseeing numerous concerts and sporting events. In his free time, he enjoyed cheering on the Cubs and all motorsports, garage saling, riding his Harley, and oil painting and airbrushing. But Roy’s highest and brightest glory in life was being able to love and support his wife, children, and grandchildren. He would never miss an opportunity to be with them. Roy worked as a machine operator with Western Electric for 20 years, Brookside for 10 years, and IAF for an additional 10 years. He retired in 2007.
Roy is survived by his loving wife Janis of 58 years; their children, Roy M. Blessinger and April (Kevin) Keffaber; granddaughters: Hanna (Daniel) Chew, Jessica Blessinger (Michael Visnich), Paige Gant (Gage Klenotic), and Reagan Gant; and great-grandchildren: Tessa Chew, Corbyn Chew, and Kinley Chew.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Carolyn Mohr. Visitation will be on Saturday, April 27, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:55 a.m. at Stillinger Family Funeral Home, 1780 West Main Street, Greenfield, with the funeral service immediately following at 11:55 a.m., officiated by Roy’s sister-in-law, Elizabeth Petry. Bill was a tremendously loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend to all who knew him and will be sadly missed. He was employed with Ameritech, turned AT&T, as a supply manager for 30 years, before retiring in 1995. After retirement, he sought work at Koorsen Fire Protection as a fire extinguisher technician. Bill attended Curry’s Chapel Church as well as Spiceland United Methodist Church. Bill loved watching western movies on TV, bird watching, being outdoors, fishing, carpentry, vegetable gardening, and collecting old tractors and trucks.
Bill is survived by his loving wife Marsha of 59 years; their children: Russell (Lynne) Branock, Eric (Cheryl) Branock, Nicholas Branock, and Nichole Gilbert; 6 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and brother, Jerry (Dois) Branock.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Marilyn (Charles) Barnes. Greg was a simple, quiet, funny young man. He loved large but remained guarded. He excelled well at his employment of McAlister’s Deli in Greenfield. He loved all of his coworkers and always, always looked out for their best interests. He overflowed with joy and excitement when he was around others. Greg also enjoyed cars, Motown music, and favorite artist, Johnny Cash.

He was born on November 2, 1961, in Lake City, Florida, to Wilburn Odell and Mary Margaret (West) Graddy. Steven is a graduate of Greenfield Central High School. He married his love Cassie Beth Boots on June 27, 1987.
Steven was a tremendously loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend to all who knew him and will be sadly missed. Steven was a pillar for this family and cherished being around them whenever he could. He especially loved having time with his 3 grandchildren. Steven loved tinkering with and riding on his motorcycles. He also enjoyed fishing and had the biggest sweet-tooth when it came to chocolate and Coca-Cola. He was employed as a sheet metal journeyman and retired from Indianapolis, Local 20, after many years of dedicated service.
Steven is survived by his loving wife Cassie of nearly 37 years; their sons, Eric (Emily) Graddy and Aaron Graddy; grandchildren: Cash, Colton, and Jaxon Graddy; siblings, Marvin (Valerie) Graddy and Karen Carter; and several nieces and nephews.
Steven was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Connie Matteson and Mary “Janie” (Mick) Evans; nephew, Ben Graddy; and niece, Toni Graddy. Thomas Edward Krueger - April 22, 1943 - April 04, 2024

Obituary Preview: Surrounded by his loving family, Thomas Edward Krueger, 80, of Greenfield, went home to the arms of his Lord and Savior on April 4, 2024. Tom was born on April 22, 1943, in Chippewa Falls, WI, to Edward Vernon and Lorraine Marie (Pepin) Krueger. Tom graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. On June 22, 1968, he married the love of his life, Mary T. Tabaka.
Tom was a family man and a loving father. He and Mary were also adoring grandparents to their two grandchildren and were actively involved in their lives. Tom was a great follower of Jesus and a man of faith. He was a member of Greenfield Faith Church. Tom loved teaching Sunday School and read through the Bible many times, taking voluminous notes on each book he read.
Tom spent his entire career, 32 years, with JCPenney, including the last six years as a store manager in Manitowoc, WI. He twice won the prestigious Chairman’s Award, the company’s highest honor for performance excellence. He was offered early retirement which allowed he and Mary the chance to spend many winters in Florida. They also enjoyed traveling along the coast of Michigan. Tom loved to sing and was part of a barbershop choir for many years. He was a lifelong fan of the Green Bay Packers and Wisconsin Badgers. Tom loved all animals but especially his many dogs.
Tom was a tremendously loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend to all who knew him and will be sadly missed. Tom is survived by his loving wife Mary Krueger of 55 years; their son, Sean (Julie) Krueger; grandchildren, Sophia and Nathan; brothers, Jim (Kathie) Krueger and Steve (Mickey) Krueger; sister-in-law, Polly Krueger; additional sisters-in-law, Barb (Wayne) Tetzlaff and Kay (Doug) Weseman; many nieces and nephews; and many great church friends.

Obituary Preview: Charles Alan Adams, 78, recent resident of Greenfield, formerly of Loganville, Georgia died Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at IU Health University Hospital, Indianapolis. He was born May 7, 1945 in Oceanside, California to the late Charles J. and Atta Marie (Morris) Adams.
Charles was a 1963 graduate of Howe High School, Indianapolis and served in the US Air Force from 1965 until 1969. He worked as a skilled tradesman for Western Electric, Indianapolis, later retiring from Lucent Technologies in Atlanta, Georgia. He was employed with Ace Hardware of Loganville, Georgia for many years after retiring from Lucent Technologies. He was an avid sports fan, especially Notre Dame sports. He enjoyed taking care of his yard, spending time with his wife, family, and his close friends.
He is survived by his wife, Donna (Odell) Adams whom he married in 1989, daughters, Tina (Jeff) Daffron, Tracy (Jobie) Whitaker, both of Greenfield, brother, Robert (Tanya) Adams of Huntsville, Alabama, grandchildren, Jaret Whitaker, Tylar Whitaker, Tori Daffron, Jayden Daffron all of Greenfield, nieces and a nephew.
He was preceded in death by his parents listed above, and a brother George Adams.

Trudy was an entrepreneur and loved owning and managing her antique store, Cozy Corner. Trudy enjoyed crafting, painting, drawing, sewing, garage-saleing, and gardening. She designed hand-made crafts for the holidays and shared them with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed going to the beach and looking for seashells. But above all, Trudy loved being with her children, grandchildren, and extended family. She will truly be missed by all. Trudy was a member of Greenfield Christian Church for many years.

She received her bachelor’s degree in education from Ball State University and taught business education at Renssalear High School. She retired after a long career with Eli Lilly and Company.
She was a faithful Cradle Roll member of the Greenfield Presbyterian Church where she had served as pianist, organist, and secretary of the church Session. She was also a member of Upsilon Chapter of Tri Kappa. Her interests included music, traveling, and community service.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Howard Prage Johns; sister-in-law, Janice Johns; 31 aunts and uncles; and numerous cousins.
She is survived by her sister, Mary “Susie” Johns Circle (husband, Larry); 5 nieces: Molly (Paul) Sawyer, Mary (Tyler) Ewing, Megan (Shane) Krugler, Amy (Steve) Winkle, and Lori Childers; nephew, Alan (Rhonda) Johns; and several great nieces and great nephews.

Vicky was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to many. She was a wonderful homemaker, who loved caring for her family. Taking care of her children and spending time with her grandchildren gave her so much joy. She also enjoyed binge watching crime dramas and playing Bunco in her spare time.
Vicky was preceded in death by her husband, Gary Fiscus, her sons, Edward Scurlock and Scotty Reed, her granddaughter, Alyssa Anderson, her brother, Butch Scurlock, her sister, Helen Papke and her son-in-law, Eric Blackmon Sr.
She leaves to cherish her memory, six children, Jenny (Jay) Tucker, Tina Anderson, Gary Fiscus, Melissa (John) Hanes, Andrea Fiscus, Jerry (Aaron) Fiscus-Allen, and her grandson, Jalon, who she raised as her own; nineteen grandchildren, George, Brandon, Brittani, Amy, Jamie, Jessica, Amanda, Alexis, Taylor, Emily, Brittany, Josh, Tori, Eric, Isaiah, Brynn, Devin, Mya and Jordan; nineteen great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Eileen Scurlock; one brother, Don (Kathy) Scurlock; three sisters, Marsha Lee, Norma (Tom) Wozniak, and Carol Draper; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was born on April 1, 1936, in Greenfield, IN, to Roy Clarence and Mary Ruth (Jack) Boles. Joan attended Greenfield High School. She married her love, Wayne C. “Bud” Cooper on August 22, 1952.
Joan was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend to all who knew her and will be sadly missed. Joan was a homemaker, but also took great pride in supporting and helping her husband with their crop and cattle farm, Valley View Farm. She loved farming. But even more, she loved her family to the fullest. Her son-in-law and daughter-in-law were accepted with open arms. She supported her grandchildren and their sporting events and activities. Her caring and loving nature greatly impacted her family’s lives to this day. When Bud became ill, she was his around-the-clock caregiver. For about fifteen years she and Wayne attended Rushville Nazarene church. There she taught children and teens, sharing Jesus love for them. In her later years, she attended Gortner Memorial Nazarene Church in Connersville.
Joan is survived by her loving children: Debi (Terry) MacKay, Mike (Debbie) Cooper, and Bruce Cooper; grandchildren: Matt MacKay, Cassie Oring, Justin MacKay, Jenny DeArmond, Mindy Chomel, and J.P. Cooper; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Thomas Robert Boese - September 11, 1927 - March 16, 2024

Obituary Preview: Thomas Robert Boese, 96, passed away on March 16, 2024. Thomas was born on September 11, 1927, in Jay County, Indiana, to Edwin and Miriam Boese. He was one of four children. He was married to his wife Donna for 57 years.
Thomas graduated from Purdue University with a B.A. in Poultry Science. He served in the United States Army from 1950 to 1952 during the Korean War. Tom owned and operated the Shirley Feed Mill for 27 years and then worked for Umbarger's Show Feeds for the next 26 years, retiring at the age of 90. Tom was an active member and past president of the Indiana Feed and Grain Association. He was a member and past president of the Greenfield Country Club. He was also a member and past president of The Shetland Pony Association. Tom took flying lessons and became a private pilot. He also enjoyed harness racing and spending time with his family.
Tom leaves behind to cherish his memory, two children, Greg (Nancy) Boese and Suzanne (David) Solomon and four grandchildren, Samantha, Gordon, Kaitlin and Thomas. He was also blessed with his first great grandchild, Lily Mae Boese.
He was preceded by his parents, his wife Donna, his son, Jeff Boese, his brother, Jim Boese, and two sisters, Jerry Coddington and Jean Thornburg.
A private graveside service will be held for the Boese family at a later date.

Mick was born on August 17, 1945, in Greenfield, to Jess Edgar and Myrtle Irene (McPherson) Evans. Mick attended Greenfield High School. He married Mary Jane Graddy on December 8, 1984.
Mick was employed as a maintenance supervisor for Greenfield Parks Department for 28 years, before retiring on May 24, 2011. Mick loved country music, especially artists as Waylon Jennings and Hank Williams, Jr., watching western movies, scrap metaling, deer hunting, dancing, and always being outdoors. He loved working on cars, attending and participating in demolition derby events, watching racing and sporting events, and being around kids. His love for dogs was also abundant, especially his own: Itsy, Chico, and Little Bit. In his younger years, he played the bass in a family/friend band. He attended First Church of the Nazarene in Greenfield.
Mick is survived by his loving children: Rhonda Badger (David), Wes Evans, Josh Evans, Loren W. Lakes and Dennis O. Lakes; grandchildren, Tanisha (Tre) Badger, Jordan Badger (Lacey), David W. Obituary Preview: Carl Benton “Ben” Carr, 75, Greenfield, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 12, 2024. Ben was born on June 3, 1948, in Detroit, MI, to Kenneth Ventrice and Susan Bernice (Eagle) Carr. Ben is a graduate of Hancock Central High School. He married his love Marijo Lynn Bravard on May 21, 1971.
Ben worked as an engineer technician for Delco-Remy, Anderson, for 30+ years, before retiring in 2001. Throughout his work history, Ben was always furthering his education and could be seen taking advanced continuing education classes in his engineering fields. After retirement from the factory, Ben went to work for the Greenfield Police Department and then onto Hancock County Sheriff’s Department as a reserve deputy. Ben was a member of the Eden Masonic Lodge for many years before becoming a member of the Shirley Masonic Lodge. He reached the ranks of Master Mason. While Ben was not actively working, he could often be found tinkering with cars, especially as a technician inspector for racing cars with Kendall Late Models. Ben also took pride in singing, fishing, being his family’s weatherman, fixing anything that went awry, spending time outdoors as a wildlife enthusiast, and creating magic in his wood shop for family and friends. But above all, Ben cherished the time he spent with his 4 wonderful grandchildren, especially attending their sporting events. Ben attended Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church. Ben was a tremendously loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend to all who knew him and will be sadly missed.
Ben is survived by his loving wife, Marijo Carr of 53 years; their daughters, Wendi (Bill) Palmer and Kelli (Richard) Silcox; 4 awesome grandchildren: Canyen Benton Palmer, Grace Abigail Silcox, Lauren Ruth Silcox, and Elizabeth Kate Silcox; brother, Victor Carr; sister, Linda Gunby; and many nieces and nephews.

Marcia was born on January 10, 1956, in Union City, Indiana, to Charles and Wanda Welch.
Marcia graduated from Mississinawa Valley High School class of 1974. She worked at the Center of Hope in Union City and retired after twenty-four years. Marcia met and married the love of her life, David Shiffler, and they enjoyed over 20 years of marriage together. She was a member of Maxville Christian Church in Winchester, Indiana.
Marcia enjoyed shopping and going to Dairy Queen for ice cream with her friend Marcha Anderson. She also loved to cook and loved spending time with her husband, David.
Marcia leaves to cherish her memory, her loving husband, David; her brother, Fredrick (Sandra) Welch; nieces, Auneta Herr, and Amy Mattox; nephews, Victor Hartzell, Mark Welch and Eric Welch.
She was preceded by her parents, her sister, Frances (Elden) Hartzell, her infant sister, Janice Welch and her nephew Charles Hartzell.

Thomas Earl Quitman Williams - February 18, 1944 - March 08, 2024

Obituary Preview: Thomas Earl Quitman Williams, 80, passed away peacefully, at Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center, on March 8, 2024, in Indianapolis, Indiana, with his loving family by his side.
Thomas was born on February 18, 1944, in Greenfield Indiana, to John Thomas and Dorothy June Williams.
Thomas graduated from Greenfield High School as the class salutatorian and later attended Yale University, where he obtained a degree in American Studies. After college, Thomas served in the United States Army and attended Intelligence Officer School. He was stationed in Korea and commanded a military unit that patrolled the Demilitarized Zone for incursions. Thomas remained in the Army Reserves after his tour of duty and attained the rank of Colonel. After an honorable discharge, Thomas graduated from IUPUI Law School and opened a law office in Greenfield, Indiana. In later years he studied theology at the Christian Theological Seminary.
Thomas married Sara Jane Pasco and later divorced. Thomas and Sara had two children, Emily Williams and William HHR Williams. In later years, Thomas lived in his family home and was cared for by his son Billy and granddaughter Samantha.
Thomas was deeply involved in his community and church. He was a member of the Hancock County Historical Society, Hancock County Democrats, Kenneth Butler Memorial Soup Kitchen, Celebrate Recovery, Greenfield Christian Church, and Brandywine Community Church.
Thomas was a dedicated scholar and chronicler of the history of Hancock County, carrying on the work of his beloved mother Dorothy June Williams, with whom he wrote a weekly historical column in the Daily Reporter. Of his many books about local history, a favorite was James Whitcomb Riley, The Poet as Flying Islands of the Night, a book he dedicated to his mother. While studying theology at the Christian Theological Seminary, he developed a passion for translating the bible using “Koine Greek,” the language of the people he often called the “humble folk.” Another book he was particularly proud of is American Folk Gospel which combines his love of the ancient texts with stories of Hancock County history.
Thomas was devoted to serving the people of his hometown, Greenfield. He worked as a defense attorney and focused on poverty law. He believed strongly that all people deserved the right to the law, regardless of their economic status. He was a lifelong Democrat and ran for Hancock County Prosecutor. He served on the board of directors for the Kenneth Butler Memorial Soup Kitchen, housed in his former law office. In his free time, Thomas loved to travel. He was particularly fond of the Greek Islands. A visit to Patmos, where the apostle John was exiled and wrote the book of Revelations, was particularly meaningful to him.
Thomas is survived by his daughter, Emily Williams, her husband, Matt Rosenthal, and their three children, Oscar, Yeabnesh, and Troyce, his son, Billy Williams, and his children, Samantha Williams and Tyson Williams, as well as his brother, Jack Williams, and sisters, Diana Hansen and Elise Teagle.
