David was born September 7, 1984, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, son to Kenneth and Charlotte (Donahey) Vanderhamm. David was an artist & craftsman. He was a carpenter, and remodeled many homes. He loved creating showers & backsplashes out of ceramic tile. He owned his own business, Corridor Construction, in Cedar Rapids. His dad, Ken, helped with many of his homes. David married Brittany McDonald and they had two children together, Tyler and Chase. He was always thankful to Brittany for being a devoted mom, and Aleighia for being a devoted aunt. The most important things to David were his faith and his family. His greatest joy was telling others of the love and grace he experienced in Jesus Christ, his Savior & Lord! He shared out of his own pain & struggles. Some friends have told us how he encouraged them in their faith. He loved reading his Bible. He read all of C.S. Lewis’ books. Charlotte’s favorite memories with David as an adult were when they would sit & share Scriptures and tell what the Lord was teaching them!
David enjoyed taking his sons camping. He loved watching Tyler play football and loved kayaking with Chase. David and Tyler had wonderful trips to Florida and Colorado. Tyler and Chase were the light of his life. He adored them and loved them with everything in his being, he lived life for his boys. David and stepdad Jay had a great time at the “Mountain Man Retreat” camping and fishing. David and his sister, Elisabeth, were best friends, constant creative mischief-makers growing up! Always scaling trees, building treehouses & contraptions in our backyard! As adults they had a depth of understanding of each other that knew no bounds, and although not quite Irish twins, you’d think that was the case. Elisabeth’s husband, Brian, was like a brother to David, and a great friend. When niece, Mckayla, was born, David delighted in her. She could always make him smile. Aunt Ginny took David and Elisabeth on several trips, including Disney World!
David was a daredevil! He enjoyed skydiving, roller coasters, snowboarding, lighting fireworks and playing with fire! He raced dirtbikes. He built & flew a fully functional homemade paraglider. From age five on he designed and built rubberband-powered airplanes that really flew! He created and performed his own magic shows. We were never able to figure out some of his magic tricks! He participated in an airplane club and a magic club, where he was the only child member. David loved riding his Harley and going to Sturgis with Chelsea Kramer. He and longtime friend Joe DeBow had many adventures. They wrestled in our yard, even set his pirate ship ablaze in the creek! It was said “David is either an irresistible force or an immovable object!” We will miss the twinkle in his eye, his dimple and that smile. But we will see him again!
He is survived by his father, Ken Vanderhamm; mother, Charlotte Coppess; step-dad, Jay Coppess; beloved sons, Tyler and Chase; sister, Elisabeth (Brian) Gray; niece and adopted sister, Mckayla/Aurora Vanderhamm; step-sisters, Michelle Hartman and Nicole Allsopp; nieces, Gabriella, Alaina, Jewelsy, Elysia, and Sienna; nephew, Charlie; aunts and uncles, Jim (Ginny) Procuniar, Nancy Donahey, Phil (Judy) Vanderhamm, and Alan (Athena) Vanderhamm; his loved ones, Chelsea Kramer, Joe Debow, Rocky Smith, George Cleveland, Joe Carroll, and Tim Wheatly; and many loving cousins.
