Departed: 09/18/2019 (Lovington)
Obituary Preview: Troy Walter Cocke, Jr., 93, passed away peacefully on September 18, 2019 with family by his side.  He was born in Granger, Texas August 20, 1926 to Georgia Mae Lumpkin and Troy Walter Cocke.  After time spent in Monticello and Hot Springs, New Mexico the family moved to Lovington in the 1930's about the time Troy was 11.  He left Lovington High School before graduation in 1944 to join the U.S. Navy along with his life-long friend, Odell Black.  Attending signalman school in the navy allowed him enough credits to receive his high school diploma.  Dad served on several ships including the U.S.S. Bexar and the U.S.S. Hickox.
After his discharge in 1946, Dad worked for McCullen Surveying and Standard Oil in Wyoming before returning to Lovington in 1947 and going to work for Mobil Oil for 38 years until his retirement.  Dad met our mother, Mildred Jane Williams on a blind date in January of 1948.  They we married on June 13, 1948 and stayed together for over 60 years until mom's death in 2009.
Dad worked hard to support his family, building on to the house to give Mom a room to start her private kindergarten.  Dad and mom helped us through our university studies and continued to support our chosen careers.  Dad helped us in every move we made, helping to haul our households to cities far and wide in New Mexico and Arizona.
Dad kept busy during his long retirement years volunteering at Nor-Lea Hospital, for the Lea County Museum and at The Methodist Church.  He was very generous with what money he had, giving to many charities as well as his church and his family.  He was an avid golfer and he and Mom enjoyed a long involvement with square dancing clubs.  He made and kept many lifelong friends, meeting the boys for coffee each morning, chauffering them when needed and visiting often.
Troy is survived by his son, Michael Cooke; daughters: Janasue Cooke and Judy Martin; three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and both of his younger brothers Gilbert and Jim.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 10:00 a.m., October 18, 2019 at the First United Methodist Church of Lovington. Services entrusted to Stevens Funeral Home.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and help to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary. However, it can also be written by a funeral home or a professional obituary writer.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?
