Obituary Preview: Christina M. Lara, 29, of Oakland City, and formerly of Mt. Vernon, passed away at her home on Friday, March 26, 2021.  She was born on September 3, 1991 in Aurora, IL, the daughter of Gilbert and Wilma (Pettyjohn) Lara.
Christina was an incredible, free-spirited woman who loved people and had a passion for serving others. Her infectious smile, coupled with her never-ending passion for country music, brighten any room she entered and left joy in the hearts of those around her – especially her friend, Cris Wolf. Cris was a friend and second mother to her, loving her and taking care of Christina when her momma couldn’t be with her. Christina’s other loves included her many jobs that kept her busy, singing, dancing, going to concerts, and collecting country music t-shirts. Christina was an unforgettable personality who will be missed by all.
She is survived by her parents, sisters, Alicia (Christopher) Tunstall and Hannah Lara and special nephew, Clark Tunstall; grandfather, Bill Pettyjohn; Aunts & Uncles, Darrell (Leisa) Pettyjohn, Janet Miller, Donna (Mike) Bowers, Migdalia (Rob) Robinson, Larry (Charlotte) Pettyjohn, Libby (Paul) Downen, Evelyn (Don) Walls, and Loretta (Russell) Wayland; and several cousins.  She was preceded in death by grandparents, Bonita Pettyjohn and Angel & Margarita Lara.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on April 2nd, 2021 at the Stendeback Family Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. A visitation will be held on Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the funeral home and Friday from 11:00 am until time of the service. Burial will follow at Union Ridge Cemetery in New Haven.
Due to the current health crisis, mask are required and social distancing should be maintained.

Obituary Preview: Constance “Connie” M. Wheeler, 73, of Mt. Vernon, passed away at her home on Thursday evening, March 25, 2021.  She was born on April 5, 1947 in Mt. Vernon, the daughter of Wilfred and Evelyn (Floyd) Gross.
Connie loved  being a Boilermaker and was a member of Local 374. She belonged to the New Harmony American Legion Auxiliary Post 370, Mt. Vernon Eagles, and  was a very active member of the New Harmony Christian Church, where she served as the pianist and choir director for many years.  Having been a member of Wolfgang Orchestra and Chorus for many years, Connie was serving as president of the board for 2021.  She shared her God given gift of voice by participation in the Chorus and shared her talents as a soloist for the Chorus and Jazz Band.  She had a keen interest in Posey County and quite often attended Commissioners Meetings.  She was  very caring and always thinking of others by baking treats of all kinds and soups for those that needed uplifting.  A fantastic seamstress, she made everything from formal gowns and matching handbags to doing alterations for many. Her dog Precious and cat Pepper were special to her. Connie's greatest love was her grandchildren, they were the light of her life. She enjoyed being with them, teaching them to cook and many other life skills.
She is survived by her children, Melissa (Greg) Knight of Carmi, John W. (Devvy) Mathews II of Mt. Vernon, and David Allen (Chabli) Mathews of New Harmony; 8 grandchildren, Ashleigh (Matt) Turner, Andrew, Jordan & Kassidy Knight, John Mathews III, Addison & Savannah Mathews, and Trevor Loehr;  great-grandchild, Mason Ezra Turner; and her companion of 13 years, Ermil Robinson.  She was preceded in death by Fred Wheeler and niece, Robin Dawn Gross.

Judith worked at Dairy Queen in Mt. Vernon for many years. She loved quilting and playing Bingo. Judith was a foster mother for many years providing care to many kids over her life.
She is survived by her sons, Terry Thompson and Brandon Thompson; daughters, Julie (Steve) Healy, Krissie Thompson, and Felicia (Matthew) Hurst; 11 grandchildren; brothers, Edward (Kay) Nation, Roger (Doris) Nation; and many nieces and nephews.

Vernon to Louis and Emma Louise (Hellenberg) Tomlinson on December 20, 1941. Frank married Mary Louise (Bulla) Tomlinson on September 13, 1964.
Frank served in the Air Force after graduating high school, where he was a proud member of the class of 1959. He worked at GE in Mt. Vernon, until his retirement. He was 50 plus member of the Owen Dunn American Legion Post #5 and served as Commander in 1975. Frank was confirmed in Trinity United Church of Christ and was a lifelong member there. He enjoyed watching sports and traveled to many different ballgames across the Country. He was a Cincinnati Reds fan. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and they were constantly on the go. Franks biggest joy was his grandchildren. He was their Number one fan and traveled with them to watch them play the many sports events they were involved with.
Frank is survived by his wife, Mary Louise; daughters, Michele (Charlie) Gross, Cheryll (Tom) Bealmear, grandchildren Chase Gross and Ashlyn Bealmear; brothers, Ronald and Steve Tomlinson; nieces and nephews; and many close friends. He is preceded in death by his infant daughter, Melissa Jayne; and brother, Jerry Tomlinson, and his parents.

Gladys worked as a teacher's aide for many years at Rosamond Elementary School in California. She was a devout Christian who led by example and a loving and humble advocate for all in need. She was a devoted member of Faith Fellowship Church in Mt. Vernon and rarely missed a service.  Her family, church family, friends and anyone in need made their way into Gladys' prayers. She enjoyed reading her Bible and singing hymns. She played the guitar and the harmonica, playing the hymn 'At the Cross' on her harmonica (harp) at bedtime every night.
Gladys is survived by her sons, Jim (Darla) Whitfield, Bruce (Lou Ann) Whitfield; daughters, Dianna (Greg) Furstner, Jeri Hobson, and Brenda Goodman; stepson John (Valerie) Newcom; 23 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild; brother, Herman Turner; and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, children Larry and Michael Whitfield; brothers Harold, Frank, and Curtis Turner; sisters Nellie Cox and Penny Hamblin, grandsons, Michael Turner, and Jeremy Hampton; great granddaughter, Katlyn Whitfield.

He was preceded in death by Betty Sue, wife of 62 years; son, David Dewar; and sister, Ina June; siblings Fred, Beverly, Lillian, Betty Jo, Patsy, Mary, and Richard.
He was survived by sister, Charlotte Kornmiller of Logan, Ohio; daughters, Deborah K. Thomas of Evansville, Linda S. Dye and Denise D. Dewar both of Foley, Al; son, Shawn R. Dewar of Mt. Vernon, IN; nine grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren.

Matthew Henry Stewart, Sr. - June 25, 1948 - November 26, 2020

Obituary Preview: Matthew Henry Stewart, Sr. was surrounded by his devoted and caring family as he quietly transitioned from this life on Thanksgiving Day November 26, 2020 at hjs home in Alexandria, Virginia
Matthew was born on June 25, 1948 to Marce Oliver Stewart and Betty Ann Stewart in Mt. Vernon, IN. Matthew graduated from the Posey County Public School System. He went on to earn his certificate of cartography from the Maryland Design and Drafting Institute. Matthew traveled the world as he prudly served his country by completing two tours in Vietnam with the 11th Armored Calvary Regiment.
After a career in the US Army, he went on to work for the United States Government and retired as the Deputy Chief Information Officer for the Dept. of Interior in Washington, D.C.
Matthew spent his life-giving back to the community and those he loved. HE was a living donor to his wife, Mary Louise Parker Stewart, and donated his kidney to her on December 11, 1996. During his time, he also ran several mentorship programs, imparting wisdom and giving his assistance to the less fortunate.
Matthew had many pleasures and passions throughout his life. He was an avid sports fan and lifelong supporter of many teams and athletes, and his knowledge of sports was never-ending. He rooted for the Dallas Cowboys and Baltimore Orioles all his life. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and was a connoisseur of the finer things in life including his favorite drink, Grand Marnier.
Matthew’s legacy is those that he loved in life- his cherished family and friends: Daughter, Michelle (Randal); Son, Matthew Jr; Grandchildren, Summer, Skylar, Saylor, Kendrick Mealing Jr., and Bryah Stewart.
He is survived by three sisters: Evelyn, Patricia, and Sylvia Stewart; brother, Marce (Brenda) Stewart; in-laws, Lucy, Ora (Ken), Haywood Jr. (Marie), Rayseen (Guy), Maurice (Tina), Ronnie (Betty), Annalita (Gene), Aptlene, Bryan, Stacey, Rico, and Leo; godson, Stephen Reynolds. As well as special lifetime friends: Marjean Sipe, Benjamin Wiseman, Carl Fields, and David Anderson. And a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Matthew joins in heaven his father, Marce Oliver; mother, Betty Ann; brothers: Jesse, Dennis, and Randy; wife, Mary Louis Parker Stewart; father-in-law, Haywood Sr.; mother-in-law, Gloria Marie; and brother-in-law, Pennard.
A private family service was held in Matthew's Memory.

Vernon on October 25, 1933 the son of George and Myrtle (Bradford) Chastain. He married Pattie (Rose) Chastain on June 29, 1957 and she preceded him in death in 2018.
George was a proud Navy Veteran and served on the USS Randolph from 1953-1956. After leaving the Navy he went to work for Whirlpool for 18 years before going to work at GE in Mt. Vernon. He worked for GE for 22 years before retiring in 1996. After retirement George served as a greeter for Boone Funeral Home and later Austin Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. He was a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church and served as a deacon for several years. He loved to work in his workshop working on woodworking projects and bowling on his church league team.
George is survived by his daughter Latricia Ann “Puddy” (Brian) McCutchan; grandsons, Noah and Rev. Khristian "Ed" McCutchan (Rita); brother, Norman Lee Chastain (Betty), sisters; Ruth Anne (Ronnie) Roach and Janice Sue Chastain, brother-in-law, Dick (Winona) Rose. He is preceded in death by his wife, parents, and brother, Charles Chastain.

Bert attended New Harmony School and was a member of the Alumni. She was a former member of the Tri Kappa and American Legion Auxiliary. She attended the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church until her health could no longer allow her to go. She loved to read and work word puzzles. She enjoyed being outside in her yard. She was well in her 90’s before she gave up mowing her own grass. Mostly she loved to be around people and spend her time with family and friends.
Bert is survived by her daughter-in-law, Linda Fieber; grandchildren, Farrah Rae Kinder and April Lee Fieber; 7 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild; brother, Paul Wasson; sisters Mildred Cannon and Wanda Sue Vaughn; sister-in-law, Phyllis Wasson; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, Doug Fieber; and brother, Walter Wasson.

Dennis was born July 25th, 1956 to parents Wayne H. & Wanda L. DeKemper. Born & raised in Mt. Vernon, Indiana on a grain and livestock farm in Point Township. He graduated from MVHS Class of ’74. Most of his years were spent driving semis for several companies and working utilities for Marathon & Country Mark.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 46 years Becky (Miles) DeKemper, their daughter Ivy DeKemper, & grand-dog Mia. Mother Wanda (Tipit) DeKemper, brother Troy (Angie) DeKemper; along with many nieces, nephews, in-laws, & cousins.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents, William & Margaret (Richmond) DeKemper; Harry & Dorothy (Roberts) Tipitt; father, Wayne DeKemper; sister Vicki Orth, and brother in laws Robert Orth & Stephen Miles.
Dennis enjoyed spending time with his family listening to ‘good’ music or watching history, sports, and especially his favorite Pittsburgh Steelers.  The image you may remember most about Dennis is him dressed in all black with a Steelers cap & shades.

No matter where Diane was living, she enjoyed socializing with people.  She was a good friend to many, making them laugh or being there for them through tough times. She absolutely loved her large family and cherished her time with them.
