Walter J. Helline, Jr. - March 21, 1938 - March 18, 2024

Departed: 03/18/2024 (Brewster)
Obituary Preview: Walter Helline, Jr, age 85, passed away peacefully at Aultman Compassionate Care Center in Canton on March 18, 2024. He was the devoted husband of his wife, Sue Helline who he cared for until she passed away November 18, 2022.
He is survived by his sister, Ann Marie (Harold) Prunty, sister-in-laws, Mary Ann Helline and Betty McGill, son-in-law Tony Neenan, daughter Stephanie Helline, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Sonny, as many called him, due to his sunny personality, had a zest for life and a heart of gold. He was a hard worker having spent his high school years attending Central Catholic and working in his parents orchard.
After graduation he served in the Army. After leaving the service, he often worked multiple jobs in addition to his farm work. He drove school bus while also working full time at Nickles Bakery in Navarre, Ohio where he retired from in 2000.
Even with multiple jobs, he still made time for family actives such as square dancing at the Beach City Grange Hall, horseback and bike riding.
He excelled at horseback riding and entered his beloved horse, Nugget, in the annual 50 mile endurance ride. The first year he entered he placed second and then won the race the following year. He was a compassionate horseback rider who made sure his horse was well taken care of and physically fit. He and Sue often took long bike rides together and with friends. For years Walt also rode with the Stark County Bike Club. He had lots of great cycling stories he liked to share. He loved introducing new riders to cycling and was always ready to share tips and encouragement with them. Even at 85 he wasn’t ready for an e-bike, riding 50 miles a week last summer!
His others hobbies included chopping, splitting and stacking wood for his wood burner. The wood piles grew large every summer as he energetically cut enough wood to last all winter.
Always one to help the community and give back, he volunteered with the Fairless Food Cupboard at Holy Parish Church. He was a lifelong member and supporter of Holy Family Parish of St. Theresa’s Church in Brewster.
Walt loved the peace he found outside while gardening and caring for the property he loved and while walking his beloved dog Dolly around the farm multiple times each day.
He will be deeply missed, but we know he will enjoy his heavenly reunion with Sue and the family and friends who have passed before him. We will never forget him.
The funeral mass will be held on Sat., April 6, 2024, 1 pm, at Holy Family Parish of St. Therese Catholic Church, 512 Wabash Ave S, Brewster, Ohio 44613. Music of reflection will be played before the service.
After the funeral mass a graveside service will be held immediately at Holy Family Parish of St. Clement Catholic Church, 216 Wooster St NE, Navarre, Ohio 44662. A reception will be held after the graveside service at the parish hall at St. Clements.

Riley P. Gerber - May 05, 1947 - November 26, 2023

Departed: 11/26/2023 (Brewster)
Obituary Preview: “I’ve left my mark, and I hope it’s a good one.” ~ Elvis Presley
A man that was easy to love and who most certainly left his mark, Riley P. Gerber, 76, passed away on Sunday, November 26, in Cleveland with his family at his bedside.
Riley wore many titles proudly: husband, father, brother, son, friend, and perhaps most dear to his heart, grandpa. He was a devoted husband to Gwen (Hannan) Gerber for 38 years. They met while working together at Lodge Nursing Home in Navarre, Ohio and soon married. They bought a house in Canton and enjoyed spending time together, watching their favorite shows, eating at their choice restaurants, and keeping each other laughing. When Riley married Gwen (aka Honey Baby), he inherited two stepchildren, Karey Boals Schner and Timothy Boals. Riley was a natural at fatherhood and treated them like his own. There’s nothing Riley wouldn’t do for his family. Grandpa Riley doted on his four grandchildren, Avery, Kylie, Logan, and Thomas, and they loved him back.
Riley was born into a large and loving family. Born in 1947 in Massillon, he was the son of Robert and Grace (Smith) Gerber of Harmon, Ohio. In addition to his parents, Riley was preceded in death by his brothers, Daniel Gerber and Robert Lee “Sonny” Gerber, and sister Jane Ann (Gerber) Ping.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Gwen (Hannan) Gerber; children, Karey (David Schner) Boals of New York City, Timothy (Elizabeth) Boals of Pinellas Park, Florida; grandchildren, Thomas Boals, Avery Schner, Kylie Schner, Logan Schner; and brother, Jim (Sandra) Gerber; sister-in-law, Lauretta (Porrini) Gerber; and brother-in-law, Tom Ping; as well as many loving nephews and nieces and extended family members and close friends.
Riley graduated from Fairless High School in 1965. After graduation, Riley enlisted in the U.S. Navy and traveled the world. Always open to new experiences, he loved recounting stories of his travels and the places he experienced. After returning home from the service, he was employed by the Ohio Railroad and then went on to work for the Village of Navarre until retirement. During those years, he was always helping others through his impressive technical skills. Whether repairing an appliance, problem-solving on a friend’s project, or remodeling a kitchen, Riley brought his exemplary talents and dedicated focus to all his endeavors.
Riley was a shining beacon of selfless kindness. He would be the first to pick up the phone to see how someone was doing in times of stress, he would drop what he was doing and offer to help, he was quick to lend a listening ear: he was a deeply compassionate and fun-loving person. He was also a skilled and respected craftsman. If one could dream it, Riley could build it. His works of art included a custom dorm-room loft bed with a hidden drawer for an alarm clock and a one-of-a-kind wooden cradle for his three granddaughters.
The family would like to thank the team in the neurological intensive care unit of the Cleveland Clinic for their care of Riley.
A memorial ceremony will be held at a later date. The interment of ashes will be at the family plot at Holy Family Parish of St. Clement Catholic Church in Navarre.
Riley was a man who cared about others; his life had meaning for so many people. He will be missed greatly. We ask you to honor Riley's life by doing a good deed. Pay someone a compliment, offer a helping hand, call a friend to check in, or tell someone you love them. And then think of Riley Gerber.
To share a memory, your good deed, or to send a condolence, please visit the online guest book at www.spidellfuneralhomebrewster.com or please mail Gwen Gerber at 1006 44th Street NW, Canton, Ohio 44709. If you'd like to be included in the details of the memorial service, please email kareybschner@gmail.com.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who need to know about the funeral arrangements, memorial services, and other details related to the person's passing. They also provide a sense of closure and allow loved ones to begin the grieving process.

Who writes an obituary?
