Charles Donovan, Jr - April 15, 1943 - February 23, 2024

Departed: 02/23/2024 (Wexford )
Obituary Preview: Charles T. Donovan, fondly known as Chuck, peacefully passed away in his sleep at age 80 at the Good Samaritan Hospice House in Wexford.
Chuck is reunited in eternity with his parents, Charles and Marie Donovan, and his beloved dog, Puffet. He is survived by his two daughters, Erin (Eric) Benacquista and Brynn Donovan, his four granddaughters: Ariana, Madelyn, Keira, and Daphne, as well as his siblings and countless nieces and nephews.
A resident of Dormont for four decades, Chuck forged enduring friendships with his neighbors, all of whom were conveniently named Jim. Many nights were spent on his front porch yelling up, down, and across the street about typical Pittsburgh topics, such as went wrong with the Steelers that week, and somewhat inexplicably, the phrase, “yoo-hoo Dennis!”. Most of Chuck’s time in Dormont was shared with Christine Nibert, with whom he maintained a close-knit relationship.
Chuck’s siblings were a large part of his life, and they would often be found on the golf course. He was a valued part of the annual Donovan Family Golfing Trip, consistently hitting low straight shots for 100 yards every. single. time, cementing his position as his team’s safe shot.
Chuck loved to discuss many topics, but almost always fell back on his favorites, the topics everyone knows always go over well at family gatherings: politics and religion. A devoted fan of the history channel, he also loved to speculate endlessly about extraterrestrials and the elusive treasure of the Knight’s Templar. Quick with a joke and an avid storyteller, Chuck was often the life of the party, effortlessly turning strangers into friends. Never one to be shy, or one to concern himself with the interest of others in meeting him, he was a master of initiating conversation, often opening with a compliment, as the ladies in the greater Pittsburgh area can attest.
Chuck’s (well earned) reputation as a prankster started young and endured throughout his life. From his mother to his sisters to his daughters, he delighted in finding the tiny ways he could aggravate the women in his life, sometimes to his own detriment. Telling his sisters scary stories until he himself woke, scared, in the middle of the night, to earning revenge sneak attacks from closets in the dark, Chuck kept life interesting always. A fan of the phrase, “a son is a son until he takes a wife, a daughter takes care of her father for the rest of her life” he drove Erin and Brynn crazy reminding them of their duty to care for him in his old age. In the end, that is exactly what happened, and both will miss him terribly.
In Chuck’s memory, may we cherish the moments of laughter he brought into our lives and as we bid farewell to him, let us end with the wise words he shared with everyone he knew: don’t take any wooden nickels.

Yuan-Chuan "Joe" Hsieh - October 22, 1930 - January 28, 2024

Departed: 01/28/2024 (Wexford )
Obituary Preview: Yuan-Chuan “Joe” Hsieh October 22, 1930 - January 28, 2024
Yuan-Chuan “Joe” Hsieh 謝淵泉 was born in Hsinchu, Taiwan on October 22, 1930. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his immediate family members on January 28, 2024 at the age of 93.
Joe will be missed by his loving wife, Suei-Sen “Esther” Hsieh, children Chia-pih (Victor) Shaw, David (Vanessa) Hsieh and Steven (Mengna) Hsieh; grandchildren Edwin (Meghann), Julienne (Matthew), Lenny, Kenny, Jonathan (Dawn), Naomi, Justin, and Chloe; and great-grandchildren Maya and Conor.
Joe married the love of his life, Esther in Taiwan in 1956. Esther was a librarian and Joe was a teacher. It was love at first sight, a storybook romance. His children, Chia-pih, David and Steven were all born in Taiwan. Joe taught at the prestigious National Hsinchu Senior High School and National Tsing Hua University. Joe was offered many opportunities at major universities and government posts in Taiwan, however, he decided to pursue his studies and left Taiwan for Penn State University in 1969. In order to provide the best upbringing, education and opportunities for his family, his wife and children eventually immigrated to the U.S. in 1971 and settled in State College, PA. Joe was truly a trailblazer of his generation; he was the very first Asian and Taiwanese to graduate with a Masters and Ph.D. in Physical Education from Penn State. Many of his students and mentees became Olympians, professional athletes, engineers, creatives, and scholars. He and Esther raised their children in State College, PA, all of whom later graduated with graduate and postgraduate degrees from Penn State University.
There is no question that collegiate and professional sports played a huge part of his life. He watched every Penn State, Steelers and Penguins game. This love of sports and collegiate camaraderie carried with him as his family grew and expanded over time. Many of his lifelong friendships were fostered through his deep connection with the Penn State community.
Besides watching sports and Family Feud, Joe loved antiquing, writing, storytelling, and creating one of a kind pieces of art. Every time a grand or great-grandchild visited the home, he would tell detailed stories of the history and facts of his many antiques. In fact, if there was a flea market nearby, Joe would make a trip (near or far) to go antiquing and hunt for treasures with his grandchildren.
His proudest moments were building experiences for the family to be together and created fun spaces for all of us to enjoy. As a truly selfless family patriarch, his biggest joy was to nurture and support us all in anyway possible. One of his early masterpieces was his garden in the backyard of his home in State College. He meticulously built and tended the garden, complete with a koi-filled pond, a tiny red bridge, a hand-built and designed putt-putt, random rock creations, and a very large pool.
His greatest legacy is the ability to bring together our family, and for that, we are forever grateful. A celebration of life and service will be held on Saturday, February 3, 2024 from 10am to 1pm at the Sperling Funeral Home (700 Blazier Drive, Wexford, PA 15090). A time of sharing memories will occur at 1:00 PM.  A reception will be held at the Sesame Inn restaurant in North Hills after the conclusion of the service from 1:45-4 PM. All are welcome to attend and continue the celebration of Agong’s incredible life.
Because this is a celebration of our “Agong’s” life, colorful attire is encouraged in lieu of black.

Lucia Maria (Melaragno) Rossi - September 26, 1931 - January 25, 2024

Departed: 01/25/2024 (Wexford )
Obituary Preview: Lucia Maria (Melaragno) Rossi
Lucia was born on September 26, 1931 in Forli Del Sannio, Italy. She was the daughter of the late Vincenzo and Paolina (Iarussi) Melaragno. She passed away on January 25, 2024 at the age of 92. She was a resident of the North Side. Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her beloved husband Teodorico Rossi and her brothers Pasquale and Carmen Melaragno. Lucia is survived by her loving sons: Vincent (Linda) Rossi and Paul (Colleen) Rossi. She is the grandmother of Alan Rossi, Nicole, Joey, Christine, and Jennifer Fiumara. Great-grandmother to Leo Rossi.
Lucia was always a strong-willed person and she was determined to come to the United States and start a new life for herself.  So she set sail alone aboard the Andrea Doria in 1953 at the tender age of 22. She stayed with relatives in Ohio where she later met her husband, Teodorico, “Teddy,” to his friends.  They were wed in Pittsburgh in February of 1961.  Their first son, Vincent, was born in November 1963.  Their second son, Paul, was born in December 1968. She loved her newly adopted country so much, that she sponsored many family members from Italy to also come to the US. Many Italian immigrants tread through Lucia and Teddy’s front door, due to her unwavering love and selflessness.
She was very gregarious and family oriented and for years, the Rossi’s threw a much-anticipated Memorial Day picnic that was attended by friends and family from near and far.
Lucia was a very creative person and a very talented seamstress.  Whenever a close friend or family member (or relative of a friend or family member!) was getting married, she would create one of her famous “Wedding Dolls.”  Over many years, about 50 of The Dolls were created and it was just another way Lucia showed her love for friends and family.  The Dolls are a lasting testament to her originality and imagination.
She also crocheted and knitted outfits for her friends’ and family members’ newborns.  Many people wore the results of her handiwork over her decades-long career.
Lucia had such a colorful and sometimes dark life that began in Forli Del Sannio, a quaint village outside of Rome, that the Heinz History Center wrote an historical narrative detailing her memories and first-hand account of the horrors of World War II.
Lucia was one-of-a-kind and her friends and family and all she knew will remember her unique personality and charisma. May she forever rest in peace.
