Ann C. Dorst - August 15, 1929 - November 19, 2021

Departed: 11/19/2021 (Mountain View)
Obituary Preview: Ann Marie Christiansen Dorst August 15, 1929 – November 19, 2021
Ann Marie Christiansen Dorst passed away peacefully at home in Palo Alto on November 19, 2021, after a brief illness. She will be remembered as a doting wife, mother, grandmother and friend; a shrewd bridge and dominos player; a discerning shopper; and a confidante extraordinaire.
Ann was born in San Francisco to Ida Margaret Taylor and Russell Conrad Christiansen. She grew up an only child in Burlingame, attended Burlingame High, and spent two years at San Mateo Junior College before moving to UC Berkeley. She graduated in 1951, where she was active in the Gamma Phi Beta sorority.
Ann met the love of her life, Dick Dorst, on a blind date soon thereafter. They were married in San Mateo early the next year, lived in Menlo Park, then Atherton, where they lived and raised their three children – and countless “adopted” friends – for over 40 years.
Ann was a gracious hostess and a remarkable cook. The Dorst home was a hub of activity where everybody was welcomed, well fed, and entertained. Holiday meals typically included a friend or colleague who had nowhere else to go and—depending on the holiday— Aunt Fran’s Gin Fizzes, Red Rooster, or 7th Cavalry Punch.
In addition to being a doting mother, Ann loved to volunteer her time and energies. She was involved in her children’s schools as PTA member, and she joined United Menlo-Atherton when the kids got to high school. She was active at the Menlo Circus Club, volunteered for Atherton Dames, Committee for Art, Peninsula Volunteers, the Children’s Health Council, and participated in numerous Bible studies.
Her greatest love was spending time with her family: watching her six local granddaughters play high school and collegiate water polo; traveling with Dick to watch him play in senior tennis tournaments; spending weekends at the beach with close friends; and visiting grand-children and great-grandchildren in Portland, Oregon.
Ann was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years, Dick. She is survived by her daughter, Jane (Peter Clark) and their daughters Elizabeth (Jeff Patmont), Christina, and Caroline; her son, Chris (Marybeth) and their daughters Lindsay Bouret (Matt), Rebecca and Emily Dietz (Hunter); and her daughter-in-law, Suzanne Montgomery, and her grandchildren Katie, and Charlie (Sheri); and her son, Jim (Amy Christensen) and their children Marian, Lauren and William; along with six great grandchildren Kelley and Juliet Lamb; Claire, James and Jack Patmont; and Cece Dorst.

Hari Adisasmito - October 31, 1963 - November 16, 2021

Departed: 11/16/2021 (Mountain View)
Obituary Preview: Hari Sutrisno Adisasmito, 58, passed away unexpectedly in his sleep due to a heart attack in his home in Redwood Shores, California, on November 14, 2021.
Hari was born on October 31, 1963, in Malang, Indonesia, to Suharjo and Lely Adisasmito. Hari attended Santo Albertus High School in Malang. He continued his study abroad in the United States in 1982 at the University of Southern California where he majored in Computer Science and earned his bachelor’s degree in 1986. After a brief stint helping his father’s company in Indonesia, Hari attended UCLA for a master program in Computer Science.
In 1989, Hari joined Oracle and moved to the Bay Area. He worked there for 32 years until his last day, with the same enthusiasm, energy, and passion that he demonstrated when he started. Hari was an amazing engineer and problem solver. He often volunteered to take up the hardest challenges. His team relied on him to continuously release Oracle products to customers. He was very well respected and the go-to guy for many people across the organization all these years when it came to solving complex technical issues. He worked tirelessly, selflessly, and always with a nice smile on his face.
Hari enjoyed baking and cooking, especially apple cake and Indonesian comfort foods that he used to have when growing up. He loved animals and the outdoors with a fondness for hiking and biking. Hari loved to read, especially the science fiction genre. He enjoyed humor. His favorite works included the British shows, "Blackadder" and "Fawlty Towers". And, of course, The Far Side comics by Gary Larson. Hari found a spiritual home at Menlo Church (in Menlo Park, California) where he initially joined the Young Adult group and later served on many prayer teams. He also actively participated in a weekly Bible study for many years. He was a wonderfully sweet and compassionate spirit that greeted everyone warmly. In 2002, Hari joined a small team from Menlo Church for a short-term mission trip to Yogyakarta, Indonesia, and generously donated his time to do a knowledge-sharing seminar with the IT students of UKRIM (Immanuel Christian University). As a team member, Hari was remembered for his humble and quiet nature, while at the same time being very observant, reliable, and always ready to help others. When the team visited a small church in Magelang, Hari was quick to notice that men and women sat separately and notified the team to sit according to the local custom. Whenever the team was on the move, he was always ready to help with translations or carrying luggage. Hari is a true embodiment of 1 John 3:18, "... let us love, not in word and speech, but in action and truth."
He was that "helpful friend" to anyone he came across.
Hari is survived by his mother Lely; his older brother Budi and sister-in-law Noortjie; his nephews and nieces, William, Monica, Christopher, and Clarissa; his aunts and uncles, many cousins, and extended family. His father, Suharjo, predeceased him in 2010.

During his career in education, and in real estate, he was a community-minded individual, serving as president of the Mountain View Chamber of Commerce, member of the Mountain View Planning Commission, treasurer of the Mountain View Rotary Club, president of the Board of Realtors, and president of the Mountain View Central Business Association.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew him, for his generous spirit and fun-loving, positive attitude. As a teacher, he was a positive influence on students and members of his musical groups. His musical ability was evident in many performing groups and solo performances throughout his life – from participating in the Fred Waring Summer Chorus, attending a gospel music concert at the White House hosted by President and Mrs. Carter, to touring the west coast for many years with a group under his direction, The Chapel Singers.
He was active for many years on area golf courses and on various softball teams – he was a lifelong Red Sox fan, as well as becoming a San Francisco Giants fan since moving to California. In retirement, he enjoyed being the “designated birthday singer” at Brian’s Restaurant in Los Altos and appreciated Jeannie and Brian Whitlock permitting him to perform there; he also appreciated the lunch fellowship with manager, Lisa Chiorello, Francisco and Alma at the Olive Garden Restaurant in Milpitas, and the assistance and friendship of Valerie and everyone at Pezzella’s in Sunnyvale. His lunch “route” added much to his week
When he began to need care because of health problems, Charles, Jacob, Samantha C., Nisi, Linda and Vicky brightened his days and helped him face difficult situations.
He is survived by his wife, Edwina, daughters Debbie (David) Ojala of Sunnyvale, Kathy (James) Felice of Gilroy, the mother of his children, Barbara Johnson, of Santa Clara; granddaughters, Katie Ojala, her fiance, Robb, and Samantha (Connelly) Felice-Doan.
A private family service will be conducted. There will be no memorial service, but contributions in his memory could be made to the American Diabetes Association or the Mountain View Academy Music Department, Mountain View, CA. You can shed tears that he is gone,
Or you can smile because he has lived. You can close your eyes and pray that he'll come back
Or you can open your eyes and see all he's left. Your heart can be empty because you can't see him
Or you can be full of the love you shared. You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. You can remember him and only that he's gone
Or you can cherish his memory and let it live on. You can try and close your mind, be empty and turn your back Or you can do what he'd want: smile,
open your eyes, love, and go on.

Richard Edward Driver - February 22, 1954 - October 29, 2020

Departed: 10/29/2020 (Mountain View)
Obituary Preview: Richard Edward Driver
Richard came into this world kicking and fighting. Born February 22, 1954, in Middletown, Ohio on a blustery winter day, he arrived sporting an alarming shade of blue, eventually diagnosed as a severe congenital aortic coarctation or narrowing of the aorta combined with a bicuspid aortic valve. His doctors gave him only few weeks or months to live. True to form, he fooled them all. In 1960 a new surgery was developed, and Richard was one of the first in line. In October of that same year, both he and his older brother Tom entered the hospital to have their hearts repaired.
One of his favorite memories of that time was being invited to El Toro Marine Base. The soldiers there had held a blood drive for him and Tom, and a few days before their surgeries were scheduled, gave them a tour of the base, including being introduced to the base commanding officer and getting to climb into and learn about their latest and greatest new jets. Once home, he and his siblings broke into the gifted “C” rations and unanimously proclaimed them uneatable.
Richard graduated from Norte Vista High School in Riverside, CA and then attended Pacific Union College, where he earned his degree in Biochemistry, followed years later by an MBA. While attending college, he met his future wife, Vicki Gomes. They married on June 20, 1976. After moving to several different places in California, they finally settled in San Jose, California where they purchased a 1930’s era ranch style home on a large lot. Over the years, they worked hard to update and remodel their home. In between the house remodeling and work, he also found time to restore classic cars and trucks.
When he turned 40, Richard discovered that he needed his aortic valve replaced. The surgery was successful, and he was told he could expect 20 good years before it needed replacing. He managed to stretch it out to 26 years. On Friday, October 23, 2020, he went in for his replacement aortic surgery. His recovery was slow but steady, and on the following Monday, he was finally out of ICU and into a regular room. That night he called all his siblings, expressing his love for them and how he was looking forward to coming home on Thursday. Wednesday morning complications set in, and he was once again admitted to ICU and back on a ventilator. The next day, despite the heroic efforts by his cardiologist Dr. Bahman Nouri and surgeon, Dr. Luis Castro, on Friday morning, October 29, 2020, Richard passed away. He was a good man, who loved his family, his God, and his work. His death brings a deep heartache to all who knew and loved him.
Richard leaves behind his beloved wife, his siblings, Pauli (Jeff) Driver-Smith, Tom (Cathe), and Jamie (Adriana) Driver, his father-in-law, Vernon Gomes and his many nieces and nephews who adored and looked up to him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George James and Betty Polly Driver, and his mother-in-law Velma Gomes.

Marcia Fein - April 04, 1944 - October 24, 2020

Departed: 10/24/2020 (Mountain View)
Obituary Preview: Marcia (Proctor) Fein was born April 4, 1944 in Lexington Kentucky to Roy and Josephine Proctor, and grew up in Georgia.
She received her BA in History from Duke University and an MA in Anthropology, University of Illinois. Marcie later continued her education with studies in Public Administration at University of Toledo and Business Management at UC Berkeley.
It was during her time at the University of Illinois that she met the love of her life, Michael Fein. Marcie and Michael were married in January 1969 sharing many wonderful years together until Michael’s death from cancer in November of 2000.
Marcie’s career focused on advocating for housing access and fairness, and her work in that arena will make a difference in the lives of low-income individuals for many years to come.
In 1974, Marcie founded the Fair Housing Center in Toledo Ohio and served as the first President. FHC in Toledo was the first CDBG-funded fair housing agency in the country and has significantly improved housing opportunities in northwest Ohio and served as a model for many other fair housing non-profits.
After moving to Mountain View in 1979, Marcie continued her work in the fair housing sector at several non-profits. Marcie may be best known locally for her work in the early 80’s as Director of Midpeninsula Citizens for Fair Housing. In1991, she became the first Director of the Affordable Housing Network of Santa Clara County, where she played a critical role in developing this non-profit organization that works to preserve and expand the supply of housing affordable to low-income people in Santa Clara County. In addition to her roles with these and other non-profits, Marcie’s contributions had wide-reach over the years as she consulted with numerous government and non-profit organizations throughout California to help them initiate and develop fair housing programs.
Marcie also served the City of Mountain View as a volunteer mediator in the City’s Rental Housing Mediation Program for 1980-1984.
Her advocacy work also prompted a strong interest in local politics. Though she never ran for office herself, she was always engaged in supporting local candidates and in particular, played a key role in 80’s and 90’s campaigns to elect Marcie Freelan and Nancy Noe to Mountain View City Council.
Though she generally took politics seriously, she had a good sense of humor and was a big fan of the Capital Steps and the San Francisco Mime Troupe. Marcie’s personal interests also included a wide variety of music, and especially female artists like Cris Williamson and Holly Near.
Marcie found peace and relaxation as a long-time practicing member of the Insight Meditation Center Dharma group in Redwood City and through her strong personal connection with the earth and plants.
Marcie maintained a plot in the Mountain View Willowgate Community Garden for many years where she grew vegetables for herself and friends. For more than 20 years, she shared her passion and expertise with others through the UC Master Gardener program.
Many of Marcie’s projects were educational such as her 2001 series of gardening columns in the Mountain View Voice and many gardening classes she taught over the years. Marcie was a member of the team that designed and implemented the very popular demonstration garden at Eleanor Pardee Gardens in Palo Alto. One of the most personal projects Marcie took on was Sophie’s Garden in 2002. She designed and planted a backyard organic vegetable and herb garden to grow food for Sophie, a one-year old child with Niemann-Pick’s disease, to help ease her digestive problems.
In 2009, Marcie combined her interests in housing and gardening, when she became an early member of Mountain View Co-housing Community. Marcie brought a depth of knowledge in cohousing principles and practice from a previous experience with an incipient cohousing project so she played an important role in shaping the Mountain View Cohousing Community’s governance, organization, and processes.
As plans were developed for the co-housing project on Calderon Avenue, Marcie was in charge of the landscape plans for the development. She researched all of the plants and developed the planting map, approved the plants as they were delivered, and supervised all of the landscape contractors in planting and the installation of the irrigation system. As a member of the co-housing community since that time, Marcie has continued to tend the lovely gardens there, paying particular attention to training and pruning the more than a dozen new fruit trees.
One of co-housing member also noted that Marcie taught the community a huge amount about consensus decision making, and brought many resources to help the community function.
Marcie passed away peacefully at home after a year-long struggle with cancer. She and her many contributions to all the communities of which she was a part, will be sorely missed by her many friends and colleagues. Laura Barbara Ortega - November 01, 1927 - September 14, 2020

Departed: 09/14/2020 (Mountain View)
Obituary Preview: Laura Barbara Ortega, age 92, passed away on September 14, 2020, at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View, CA, after a week-long illness. Laura was born mischievous on November 1, 1927, at her family’s farm in Mountain View on what became the Shoreline complex. She was the youngest of 10 children of Manuel Correia and Marie (Ferriera) Correia, each born in The Azores, Portugal. Laura grew up working hard tending to her family’s animals, agriculture and household. She also had a lot of fun with her siblings. She enjoyed telling stories of their adventures, like sneaking into the root cellar with her sisters on hot days to enjoy her mother’s preserves, attending Portuguese festivals, parades and dances, traveling “all the way to San Jose” to watch movies, and working in the Milpitas canneries. Her carefree nature extended through adulthood and parenthood, and remained into her ‘90s.
Laura met Navy veteran James Moya Ortega at a movie theater. They dated, broke up – Laura’s feisty nature rarely took a back seat – and eventually married on May 28, 1948, in Reno, NV. They remained married until Jim suffered a stroke and passed away in 2002. In the decades after their wedding, Jim and Laura returned to the Reno and Lake Tahoe area often, spending hours exchanging silver dollars with slot machines and – mainly Laura – striking up conversations with seemingly everyone. They also loved to dance, a skill that Jim honed by entering many contests with one of his sisters. They particularly enjoyed dancing at the Coconut Grove in Santa Cruz. They took road-trips to various states with Laura’s sisters and brothers-in-law, bowled many frames in many leagues with many family members and friends, and took dozens of turns hosting get-togethers at their home in Los Altos, which general contractor Jim built in 1966 and homemaker Laura remained until a week before her death. With their children they went boating and fishing on the delta and traveled to Disneyland and other vacation spots many times.
Laura is survived by her children James, Jr. (1951), Ronald (1952), Lori Ann (1959) and husband Stephen, and Gary (1966), and her next-eldest sibling, Dolores Mathias (1925). All who knew Laura will miss her easy, infectious laugh, her quick, smart-aleck tongue, her heart full of love for all to share, and the way she got a kick out of the simplest observations of life.
