Leo William Hermans - November 05, 1954 - May 20, 2024

Departed: 05/20/2024 (Virginia Beach)
Obituary Preview: Leo William Hermans, Jr., an all-around good egg and jack-of-all-trades, signed off for the last time on May 20, 2024, at the spry age of 69. Born on November 5, 1954, in the naval town of Norfolk, VA, Leo made his final landing in Nassawadox, VA, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and optimism.
Throughout his 69-year run, Leo wore many hats—literally and figuratively. He fought fires, hammered roofs, built homes, and shaped metal, proving there wasn't much he couldn't do with a tool in hand. His resume read like a Swiss Army knife's instruction manual, but one thing was for sure: Leo was never a quitter and always aimed to find the silver lining, even if it was wrapped in sheet metal.
A proud patriot, Leo served his country with distinction in both the US Army and the US Navy. He was the kind of guy who could seamlessly transition from military boots to carpenter's boots, showing his versatility and unwavering spirit.
Preceded in death by his parents, Leo William Hermans, Sr. and Leslie Hermans; his brother, Gene Hermans; and the grandmother who raised him, Mary Walker, Leo now joins a heavenly reunion that surely includes some epic storytelling.
Left to carry on his legacy are his sister and brother-in-law, Diane and Butch Jones; his brothers, Tony Hermans, Chris Hermans and Wayne Hermans; and his sister, Renee. While Leo's passing leaves a void, his resilience and positive outlook leave an indelible mark on those who knew him.
A celebration of Leo's life will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Southside Chapel, located at 5033 Rouse Drive, Virginia Beach, VA. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a sense of closure for those grieving.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased. Funeral homes may also offer assistance with writing an obituary as part of their services.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations in lieu of flowers, and any other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it's recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important information. Aim for around 150-200 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and help readers remember the person.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only the basic facts such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and any specific requirements they may have. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

Can I publish an obituary online?

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost varies depending on the publication or platform. Newspapers typically charge by the word or line, while online platforms may offer package deals or flat fees. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars.

Can I edit or update an obituary after it's been published?

This depends on the publication or platform. Some may allow minor corrections or updates, while others may not make changes once it's gone to print. Be sure to proofread carefully before submitting.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe varies depending on the publication's schedule and deadlines. Online platforms may publish immediately, while newspapers may take several days or even weeks.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes! Many people choose to write their own obituary as a way to control how they're remembered and ensure accuracy. This can also be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary?

DON'T worry! Writing an obituary can be a difficult task. Consider enlisting the help of a friend or family member, or seeking guidance from a funeral home or professional writer.

Can I include humor or personal anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber and serious. Including lighthearted moments or humorous stories can help celebrate the person's personality and spirit.

How do I handle sensitive or private information in an obituary?

Be mindful of sharing sensitive details that might cause discomfort for surviving family members or friends. Focus on highlighting the person's positive qualities and achievements instead.

What if I need to correct errors in an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication or platform immediately to report any errors. They may be able to issue a correction or reprint the revised obituary.

Can I reuse an obituary for multiple publications?

You can reuse the same text for multiple publications, but be aware that some platforms may have specific formatting or content requirements. Be prepared to make adjustments as needed.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

This varies depending on the platform. Some online obituaries may remain available indefinitely, while others may expire after a certain period (e.g., 30 days). Check with the platform for their policies.

Can I create a memorial website or page for my loved one?
