She left this earthly world on Friday morning, March 15th, 2024, passing peacefully in her sleep and surrounded by loved ones in the comfort of her home in Sarasota, Florida.
Marilyn was born in Hartford, CT on June 7th, 1928, to parents, Charles Albert Connor and Ruth Louise Alden and Sister, Nancy. She received her primary education in Fairhaven MA where she attended Sacred Hearts Academy with her Sister, Nancy. In 1941, She won first place at the Belmont Music Festival in Belmont, MA for her classical piano performance. The family moved to Sarasota in the summer of 1942 where Marilyn completed her secondary education at Sarasota High School in 1945. Shortly after arriving to Sarasota, Marilyn entered and won first runner up in the Sara DeSoto Pageant. During high school, Marilyn was approached by 20th Century Fox Film Studios to audition for "Sunday Dinner for a Soldier". She completed her screen test and was set to star in the film, when the Studio discovered she was not of age. Marilyn caught the modeling/acting bug early and set her sights on New York City in the Spring of 1947. She was a classically trained pianist, having studied at the New England Conservatory of Music where she received her radio rating from Arthur Fiedler, Conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra in Boston, MA. Marilyn went on to graduate from Barbizon School of Modeling in 1949 and was featured in such notable magazines as Look Magazine and continued to model on Broadway for Edelman Clothiers and Shoes. After a tragic car accident ended her modeling career, Marilyn returned home to Sarasota and began college at Wall Business School before marrying her first husband in 1950. She eventually received her bachelor's degree from University of South Florida and taught both in the Manatee and Sarasota County Public School system, before retiring from the English Department of New College in 1986.
Marilyn will be fondly remembered by many for her incredible beauty, charm, and wit, her extraordinary musical talent, and her indomitable spirit. She was simply captivating and was always happy, no matter the weather. She never knew a stranger and was always quick to forgive. She loved to write poetry, sing and play the piano, garden, and read. Marilyn shared these gifts freely along with her Gift of Gab. He graduated from high school in Minneapolis and worked a variety of jobs in his youth such as pin setter in a bowling alley, paper boy and radio repair. He eventually started his employment at Honeywell in Golden Valley, MN where he worked for 38 years mainly as foreman and supervisor. Departed: 02/28/2024 (Sarasota)
Obituary Preview: On Wednesday, February 28th, 2024, the soul of David Alexander Shorin, 54, transitioned from his body into the hearts and memories of his family, loved ones, and friends.
David hailed from New York City and summered on Fire Island. After moving to Sarasota with his family, he spent some of his early adulthood in New Hampshire, New Mexico, and Tennessee, before landing back in Sarasota.
Dave was a kind and gentle man, who always kept others in mind as he navigated through this world. He was smart, witty, and had a knack for finding humor in almost every situation. From an early age, he had a passion for computers and technology. He always jumped on the opportunity to help the community get their systems back up and running. He was a master at Scrabble, he could not be beat. He knew every two letter word, not just the four letter ones! If you knew him, you have definitely listened to the Grateful Dead at some point. He attended countless concerts and was a die-hard "dead head." Music was ever-present in his life. His spirit will live on in the tunes and melodies of the artists he shared with us. He will be dearly missed and loved forever.
He is predeceased by his father, mentor, and piece of his heart, Joseph Shorin.
David leaves behind his beloved mother, Maryanne Shorin, "little" sister, Jessica Shorin, four older siblings, Melanie Shorin (Greg Feldman), Valerie Lowe, Jocelyn Lyss (Andy), and Joe Shorin (Bonnie), and 11 nieces and nephews.

Alice Ralph - October 13, 1959 - February 23, 2024

Departed: 02/23/2024 (Sarasota)
Obituary Preview: Alice Anne (Locko) Ralph, 64 years young, passed away peacefully, taking up her Angelic wings, in her Longboat Key, FL home with her daughters Rachael Roumaya and Amanda Ralph and her husband Ray at her side on February 23, 2024. Alice was brought into this life on October 13th, 1959, in Chicago Heights, Illinois, to her parents, Serge and Anne Locko, and her four older brothers, Charles, Stephen, David and Bill Locko. When she was a toddler, her family relocated to Southern California, where she evolved into the beach girl many knew her to be. Alice graduated as Senior Class President from Clairemont High School in 1977. She was the beloved baby of her family and the glue that connected them throughout her lifetime. Just a few days before her passing, her passionately protective big brothers dropped their lives and travelled from all over to gather in her home and say goodbye to their baby sister.
Throughout her life, Alice held a handful of different careers. She proudly worked for The Wine Spectator magazine in her 20s, and she was a highly-valued paralegal for several years, but Alice truly found her calling working alongside elementary and middle-school aged kids in education administration. She was a sensitive soul and possessed the gifted ability to seek out and provide support and care for the children who needed it the most. She loved them, and they loved her.
In 1985, Alice married a small-town Canadian and the man who would make her his whole world, Raymond Ralph. After years of pursuing her, with his utmost devotion, he'd finally won her over. Together, they shared many life dreams, but above all, having a family was at the top. In June 1987, their oldest daughter, Rachael, was born in Scottsdale, Arizona. Their youngest daughter, Amanda, was born four years later in San Diego in August 1991. In 1995, Alice and her family moved from San Diego, California, to Bradenton, Florida, before moving to Austin, Texas, in 2000 for 21 years. Alice & Ray retired in Longboat Key, Florida, in 2021.
Being the mother of girls was her greatest joy. Everyone who knew her was privy to the pride and unconditional love for her girls. She became Nana to her two grandsons, when Brad and Rachael Roumaya gave birth to Brayden and Camden in 2016 and 2021, respectively. While loving her girls was always the most meaningful job, she loved her grandchildren with the same depth and joy she loved her daughters with.
Alice's radiance and authenticity were palpable. She was a magnet for friendship and connection. Because her daughters and husband understand the far-reaching influence Alice had on so many people, multiple Celebration of Life services will be held in her name. These dates and locations are yet to be determined.
If you knew Alice, you knew she was very fond of quotes. If you came to her to vent or for advice, you would get a quote. Her home was always decorated with many different meaningful and inspiring ones. Because it is one of her most echoed and simple quotes and encapsulates how reverently she lived and loved, her family chose the one below to honour and remember her. "Life is so short and very fragile; do that which makes you happy."

Emma Smith - July 23, 1946 - February 22, 2024

Departed: 02/22/2024 (Sarasota)
Obituary Preview: Emma B. Smith ("Emmy"), 77, passed away Thursday morning February 22, 2024, in Sarasota, FL. Emmy was born to Clifton and Eleanor Bagley on July 23, 1946 in New York, New York. She grew up in Scarsdale, New York, graduated from Scarsdale High School and then moved west to attend Denver University. It was there that she met the love of her life on a blind date. After graduation, she married James Smith ("Schmitty" as he was affectionately called my Em) in 1969 and they were both offered teaching jobs. Following the wedding, they relocated to Burlington, Vermont in pursuit of their educational vocations and finally settled in Colchester. Most importantly, she spent every summer of her entire life at her happy place, Martha's Vineyard. The family home in Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts was first built in 1886 and was definitely her favorite place on earth. She welcomed so many friends and family to experience the island, stay at the house and fall in love with Martha's Vineyard. If you stayed with Emmy, you would be guaranteed an island tour all the way to Aquinnah. In 2019, the retired couple finally left Vermont and became snow birds in Venice, Florida near the beach to enjoy life to the fullest. Emmy's presence will be deeply missed, but her memory will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew her and even some who didn't. As an organ donor, her eyes are being used for research.
Emmy was a caring, accepting, and loving individual. She was described as a quiet force, determined, and a good listener. Her presence was welcoming, selfless, and sharing, making her like a second mom to many. She was actively involved as a girl scout leader, a gardener, a cross-country skier, a party host, and an avid traveler. Emmy found joy in beachcombing, taking photographs, and admiring sunsets. Emmy was known for her motherly love, optimistic nature, and cheerful disposition. She was a dedicated wife, mother, grandma, supportive friend, and an incredibly impactful soul. Once featured in the nationally syndicated Ann Landers column titled 'Young mom sends thanks to good Samaritan'. A mom and her two young kids were stuck at Burlington, Vermont airport when their flight got canceled and wrote in to thank a stranger named Emma Smith. "You helped me think through various options and waited with us while I gathered my suitcase, then you drove us to the ferry that would take us to Plattsburgh, NY, just a short trip to my mom's house. This was truly above and beyond the call of a good neighbor. You exemplify the true spirit of a good Samaritan. Someday, when my children are grown and I see a young mother in distress, I will remember you, Emma , and pass the favor on." - Jackie Parks 4/10/1999
Emmy had a fulfilling career as an elementary school teacher and was the creator of the reading program in Burlington, Vermont. As they started a family, she committed her time to being a stay-at-home mom raising Jessica and Jamie. Emmy enjoyed following and supporting her husband and children's athletic pursuits. She was their #1 fan. There was not one soccer or basketball game that she missed during her childrens' playing years. As her children matriculated to college, Emmy found her love of hosting and placing exchange students from all over the world. As an empty nester, she returned to teaching and supporting Title I literacy programs in Colchester, Vermont.
In 2007, Emmy became a grandmother for the first time and absolutely loved being "Grandma". Grandma and Grandpa would spend the month of April in San Diego with both grandkids teaching them the Easter traditions of painting eggs, putting out baskets, chocolate candy and egg hunts. She always sent the grandkids cards, candy and gifts, not only for birthdays and Christmas, but for any holiday.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, James Smith ("Schmitty"); her daughter Jessica Smith and son Jamie Smith; her grandchildren Nolen Abdullah and Eva Smith, as well as many other family members and friends. She is predeceased by her parents Clifton and Eleanor Bagley and her sister Midge Marshall.

Glenn Zipp - January 25, 1938 - February 17, 2024

Departed: 02/17/2024 (Sarasota)
Obituary Preview: Glenn Arthur Zipp died peacefully Saturday, February 17, 2024 at the age of 104 (ish), nodding off while drinking coffee and reading the morning newspaper in the sunroom of his residence in Venice, Florida. He was preceded in death by his two faithful dogs, Lulu and Tilly, whose twice a day walks attributed to his longevity. When he turned 100 and was asked about the secret to his longevity, he remarked that in his family, dying before you're in your 90's is considered a premature death. He subscribed to the view that in order to live long, avoid dying!
He leaves behind his wife of some 65 years, Julie Colwell Zipp, his best friend and soulmate.
Surviving are five children: Sibylle Lahood, Christopher Zipp (Julz), Jennifer Tyre (Dan), Alexander Zipp (Dr. Michele Pennington), and Melanie Anne Remacle, as well as nine grandchildren: Ryan, Trevor, Jared, Brianna, Aeris, Holden, Ivy, Catalina, & Theron and many great-grandchildren. Family and friends were of utmost importance to Glenn. He rarely forgot a birthday and regarded his time with them as well spent.
Glenn was born on January 25, 1938 in Merrill, Wisconsin to Fred & Olga Jirovec Zipp, both deceased. He was one of seven children sharing the love of his parents with brothers Robert, Phil (Caroline), Lawrence (Mary), and Patrick (Linda), and had two sisters, Marge (Phillip) Kamke and Debbie (Tim) Symonds. Glenn had an idyllic childhood growing up in a small town in Northern Wisconsin with an extended nearby family of grandparents (including his beloved grandmother, Marguerite, who lived beyond the age of 102), 12 aunts and uncles and many cousins. The Jirovec family farm and those of his mother's brothers which he frequently visited, were within a half-hour bike ride. His parents and grandparents on his father's side had cottages on Lake Alice outside of Tomahawk, Wisconsin when he was growing up and provided many fond memories of boating and fishing as a youth. After graduating from Merrill High School, Glenn went on to earn a Baccalaureate degree at Wisconsin State College in Stevens Point, and a Master of Arts at the Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Glenn was an active alumnus of his graduate school and served on its Alumni Board of Directors for many years, including as President. In 2003, he received an ILIR Distinguished Alumni Award in recognition of his alumni service and professional accomplishments. His many affiliations and civic activities included the Universalist Unitarian Church of Peoria, in which he served in various positions, including President of the Board. He is a past President of the Peoria Chapter of ACLU; past President of the Peoria Planned Parenthood Chapter; founding member of the Friends of Glen Oak Zoo (predecessor to the Peoria Zoological Society); member of the Illinois
Valley Yacht and Canoe Club of Peoria; long time Board member of the Central Illinois Landmarks Foundation; Board member of the Contemporary Art Center of Peoria; and past Commissioner on the Peoria Housing Commission where he served as Chairman.
Glenn and his wife Julie for twenty years had a second home in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico where they wintered until 2019 when they relocated to Venice, Florida for the winter months. During his stays in San Miguel de Allende, he served as a volunteer delivery driver to over a dozen of the 36 rural kitchens supported by the non-profit organization Feed The Hungry, and was a member of the Midday Rotary Club of San Miguel de Allende and of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of San Miguel de Allende. Two Peoria civic accomplishments that he was most proud of were serving as Fundraising Committee Chair for the successful campaign to build an animal hospital at the Glen Oak Zoo, and serving as a member of the committee that developed the Veterans Memorial Park adjacent to the Grand Army of the Republic Hall in downtown Peoria.
Glenn's professional career was primarily with the National Labor Relations Board, a regulatory agency of the Federal Government which administers the National Labor Relations Act governing union management collective bargaining. Starting as a Field Examiner in 1964, he held various supervisory positions with the Chicago, Cincinnati and Peoria offices, the latter of which he headed for 25 years before his retirement in October, 2000 as Regional Director. While with the NLRB, he was appointed a member of the Federal Government's Senior Executive Service. He was the first in his agency to be selected for a SES sabbatical, which he devoted to teaching for an academic year (1990-91); the fall semester at his alumni graduate school and for six months during the Michaelmas and Hilary terms as a Visiting Fellow at Templeton College, Oxford University in the United Kingdom. Prior to his NLRB service, he was employed as a Budget Analyst with the US Dept. of Agriculture, Commodity Stabilization Service in Evanston, Il and as a Field Labor Economist with the US Dept. of Labor, Bureau of Statistics, Chicago Office. During his 38-year Federal Civil Service career, Glenn taught as a part-time instructor at Sangamon State University (Peoria campus), Xavier University in Cincinnati, and for 12 years at Bradley University in Peoria. After his retirement from the NLRB he was self-employed for 18 years as an arbitrator-mediator of employment disputes in the private and public sectors. His arbitration listings included Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, the American Arbitration Association, IDOT/Illinois AFL-CIO Jurisdiction Disputes PLA roster, FINRA (the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority) roster of arbitrators and Illinois Central Management Services/AFSCME Council 31 permanent roster. Glenn devoted his entire career as a neutral in labor management relations, deeply committed to the view that collective bargaining between organized labor and free enterprise corporations are essential institutions in a democracy. In 2017, the Chicago Chapter of the Labor and Employment Relations Association honored him with its Distinguished Service Award.
Glenn's hobbies included reading and enjoying art. He was an avid sailor and owned a 22' Columbia sailboat, Boa Vida, for thirty years. He was a member of the IVY Club IORF racing fleet, racing mostly on Wednesday evenings and crewing on Saturdays for skipper and friend, Al Convington in the Capri Fleet for some 25 plus years. For 25 years, he was an avid runner and member of the Illinois Valley Striders Club. He won one running trophy which his wife Julie conveniently misplaced to prevent the accomplishment from going to his head. He lived a full life, and for that he is grateful.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries are important because they provide a way to celebrate the life of the deceased, share memories and stories, and notify others of their passing. They also serve as a historical record of the person's life and can be a valuable resource for genealogists and researchers.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, an obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral or memorial services, charitable donations, and other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the family's preferences. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs. Online obituaries often have more flexibility in terms of length than print publications.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?
