Obituary Preview: Mary Jean Henke, 87, of Aitkin, passed away Saturday, April 23, 2022 in The Harbor Senior Living of Fridley.  She was born June 11, 1934 in Belle Plaine to Oliver and Vera (Bisbee) Meyer.  Mary graduated from Mora High School in 1952.  Mary was united in marriage to DuWayne Henke on October 15, 1955 in Minneapolis.  Mary worked for US West Telephone Company until her retirement.  She volunteered at the Aitkin American Legion for many years.  Mary enjoyed sewing, crocheting, quilting and especially spending time with her family.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents; son, Gary; siblings, Donald, Dale, Ray, Dorothy Stradcutter and Kathleen Peterson; brother-in-law, Robert Henke.
Mary is survived by her loving husband, DuWayne Henke; children, Steve (Patricia) Henke, Bruce (Audrey) Henke and Barbara (Lanny) Klett; grandchildren, Ryan, Derek, Shelby, Brady, Spencer, Angela, Tony, Andy, Alicia, Nathan Kristin, Michael and Alex; 13 great grandchildren; sister, Shirley Nelson; sisters-in-law, Marion Meyer and Jeanette Henke; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Obituary Preview: Larry John Antonsen, 80 of McGregor passed away Saturday, April 23, 2022 at the Emerald of Grand Rapids.  He was born July 24, 1941 in Minneapolis to John and Mabel (Wiggert) Antonsen.  He grew up in Buffalo Lake and graduated from Buffalo Lake High School in 1959.  He attended Hamlin University and graduated from the University of Minnesota.  Larry was united in marriage to Constance “Connie” Mahal on August 22, 1964 in Saint Anne’s Church in Wabasso.  They lived in Coon Rapids, East Bethel and enjoyed wintering in Texas for 15 years.  He was an entrepreneur, owning and operating many businesses. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, spending time on the lakes in northern Minnesota and Canada, especially with his grandchildren.  Larry retired to his lake home on Lake Minnewawa in 2005. He had a quick wit, enjoyed by many, including his wife: Connie; Daughter: Julia; Son: Jeff (Sara); Grandchildren: Sebastian, Santiago, Sydney, Jennifer; Sister-in-law: Shirlee; Nephews: Paul, Arlen, and Allen;
Many other special relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Lane.

Obituary Preview: Mary Ann Zilverberg, 94, of Aitkin, passed away Thursday, April 21, 2022 in Aitkin Health Services, Aitkin.  She was born April 20, 1928 in Dean Lake Township, Crow Wing County to Andrew and Mary (Yeray) Burgstaler  (Mary’s birth certificate was filed on April 28th, 1928 and this is when her birthday was celebrated).  Mary was united in marriage to Jake Zilverberg on June 3, 1947 in Crosby.  Mary was a member of St. James Catholic Church of Aitkin.  Mary volunteered doing the residents hair at Aitkin Health Services.  She loved cooking and baking for her family and friends, canning, fishing, camping, gardening, flowers, making butter, collecting glassware and watching the birds and deer and nature in general.  Mary and Jake enjoyed going to threshing shows and showing “hit and miss” engines.
Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Jake; her parents; daughter, Jeanine; brother Andy Burgstaler and sister, Josephine Jensen.
Mary is survived by children, Kenneth Zilverberg of Aitkin, Annette Zilverberg-Russell and her husband, Ted Russell of Aitkin and Karen Zilverberg-Carson and her husband Don Carson of Seabrook, Texas; brother, Thomas “Barney” (Darlene) Burgstaler; former daughter-in-law, Diane Zilverberg; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Judy is preceded in death by her parents; sister, Peggy Smith; brothers-in-law, William Dotzler and Donald Dotzler; sister-in-law, Eileen Ternus.

Rita is survived by her husband David Thompson of Aitkin;

Obituary Preview: Sandra Kay Math, 82, of Aitkin, passed away Monday, March 7, 2022 in Cuyuna Regional Medical Center, Crosby.  She was born February 2, 1940 in Aitkin to Gordon and Bernice (Davies) Klingelhofer.  Sandy graduated from Aitkin High School and completed 3 years of college at St. Cloud State.  She was united in marriage to August Math on April 11, 1964 in Aitkin.  Sandy was a bookkeeper and receptionist for over 20 years, starting at Pyrofax Propane Company (which eventually became AmeriGas).  She was also the Hazelton Township Clerk for 44 years.
She enjoyed quilting, knitting, embroidery, cooking, baking, fishing, gardening, playing cribbage, playing guitar, bird watching doing puzzles and especially spending time with her family.  Sandy was passionate about being a great mom to her kids and a second mom to anyone who needed love, advice, hugs or just some good food.  She loved to gather friends and family to honor traditions such as making crocks of sauerkraut, preparing Easter baskets to be hidden, throwing back yard Booyas and teaching others how to bake bread, make lefse or cook a variety of hot dishes.  If you were at any of those events, you might have seen that special twinkle in her eye as she told a story or two.  Did you hear about how she played football in country school, met Augie in 9th grade algebra class, was convinced she was going to drown after tipping the canoe while ricing, or how she was chased by a bull around the 1 room schoolhouse? She fed most Aitkin folks at one time or another in the 80s and 90s during the 17 years that she ran her own catering business. Sandy enjoyed 'cutting a rug' at barn dances, square dancing above the Aitkin Bakery and chair dancing to Funtime Polka Party later in life.  Sandy will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Sandy is preceded in death by the love of her life, August; her parents; great grandchild, August Michael Miracle; 2 sisters, Twila Ecklund and Lorna Hills.
Sandy is survived by 3 children, Lisa (Rachel Banasiak) Math, Sara (José Perera) Math and Jason (Ann Blanchard) Math; 1 honorary adopted son, Greg Rufus (Missy) Boeser; 3 grandchildren, Ken Math, Aydn Math and Oliver Math; siblings, Linda Math and Thomas (Mary) Klingelhofer; 2 grandkitties, SheRa and Floyd; many cherished nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.

Jean Isabel Thompson - January 08, 1937 - March 05, 2022

Obituary Preview: Jean (Veer) Thompson
Jean (Veer) Thompson, 85, of Aitkin, Minnesota, went to meet Jesus on March 5, 2022. Jean was born on January 8, 1937, to Jacob and Isabel Veer in Alsen, North Dakota. She married Thomas Thompson on June 25, 1953 in Langdon, North Dakota.  After their marriage, they lived in small towns in northeast North Dakota until they moved to Roseau, Minnesota, in 1965, where Tom farmed. In 1995, they moved to Aitkin, Minnesota, where they resided until Jean woke up in the arms of her beloved Savior.
Jean was a dedicated wife, mother and friend. She loved gardening and reading her Bible. She was generous, kind, thoughtful, hardworking and had a wonderful sense of humor. Her children were her greatest accomplishment. Her favorite way to say goodbye was always “moving forward, looking upward.” The last Bible verse she shared with her children was Psalm 118:17 “I shall not die, but live and recount the works of the Lord.” She indeed did not die, as she is now fully alive in heaven waiting patiently for the rest of us to join her. She will be tremendously missed by those she has left behind.
Jean was predeceased by her parents Jacob and Isabel Veer, brothers Leonard Veer and his wife Barbara, Larry Veer, and son-in-law Carson Strickling, and grandchild Mary Rosteck. She is survived by her husband Tom, and eight children Barbara (Gus Jacobson), Daryl Thompson, Sandra (Mark Milkey), Sharon (Jim Rosteck), Kevin (Laurie) Thompson, Timothy (Jennifer) Thompson, Dennis (Mary) Thompson, and Lonnie (Tabitha) Thompson. She is also survived by 19 grandchildren, Chad (Kendra), Sean, Emily, Ben, Sam (Tiffany), Jim (Isabel), J.C., Jake (Linda), Joe, Jeremy (Abby), Jenna (Levi), Erin, Kayla (Hunter), Emma, Sara, Graham, Josiah, Ethan and Megan, and 15 great grandchildren, Lexie, Zach, Josh, Hailey, Melody, Matthew, Arianna, Israel, Avery, Desmond, Connor, Henry, Teddy, Joel, and Beau. She is also survived by a sister Vivian (Bob) Welsh, a brother Tom (Fern) Veer, a sister-in-law Faye Veer, and many nieces and nephews. The family requests no gifts or flowers. Timothy Robert Anderson - May 24, 1963 - March 02, 2022

Obituary Preview: Timothy “Tim” Robert Anderson, 58, of Aitkin died peacefully at home on Wednesday, March 2, 2022 with his family by his side.  He was born May 24, 1963 in Minneapolis to Luverne “Vern” and Elizabeth “Betty” Anderson.  Tim grew up in Burnsville until his junior year in high school when his family moved back to Aitkin where his dad grew up.  He graduated from Aitkin High School in 1981 and attended Brainerd Vo-Tech where he graduated with a 2-year accounting degree.
Tim lived for a time in Minneapolis and Las Vegas before moving back to Aitkin.  He married Pauline Sticha from New Prague in 1992 and they made their home in Aitkin and never left.
Tim worked for Grand Casino where he started as a blackjack dealer using his love of playing cards and later was head of the training department.  He was currently working at Members Cooperative Credit Union as the Regional Bank Manager of Aitkin and McGregor where he loved his interactions with members and employees.
Tim spent many hours outdoors doing all the things he loved to do in Aitkin County including hunting, trapping, fishing, biking, camping, kayaking, cross country skiing or anything else he could talk someone into doing.  His passion for the outdoors and nature was passed down to his kids and all those who knew him.  No trail was ever too long to walk, paddle, bike or ski and he was NEVER lost…well maybe just once.
Tim loved playing cards or games or anything competitive including “old man” basketball as he referred to it.
What he loved most was watching his kids in all their high school activities and cheering them on.  He was a proud Dad.  And for the last 15 months his greatest joy has been his grandson, Kolbe, whom he adored, and the love was so mutually returned.
Tim is preceded in death by his father, Vern in August 2020; brothers in law and sister-in-law, Donn Zimanske and Francis and Bernie Nelson.
Tim is survived by his wife of 29 years, Pauline, their children, Alex Anderson of Kellogg, ID, Ryan (Lindsey) and grandson, Kolbe Anderson of Deerwood, Lisa (Parker) Nudell of Aitkin.  Tim is also survived by his mother, Betty; siblings, Tom (Dana) Anderson, Lori Anderson, Heidi (Chad) Larson and Eric (Amy) Anderson; brothers/sisters in law, George (Diane) Sticha, Norbert (Arlene) Sticha, Marilyn (Kevin) Phelps, Gilbert (Sue) Sticha, Glen (Amy) Sticha and Theresa Zimanske; many other special friends and relatives.
Tim’s family would like to extend a special thanks to Members Cooperative Credit Union and Riverwood Healthcare Center infusion nurses and oncology department for their wonderful treatment since his pancreatic cancer diagnosis in April of 2021.

Obituary Preview: Donna Rae Chambers, 72 of Aitkin, was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She passed away peacefully at home on March 2, 2022 after a courageous 3-year battle with cancer.  Donna was born November 11, 1949, to Ray and Darlene Streff in Le Mars, IA. She grew up in Slayton, MN. and graduated from Slayton High School in 1967.
Donna moved to Minneapolis where she met her soul mate, Loren, through a mutual friend and they married September 26, 1992. Together they blended their families: son Shane (Jenny) Roy, daughter Taydem (Scott) Wall, stepdaughters Angie (Dustin) Moulds and Tanya (Keith) Brunscheon; Grandchildren: Brennen, Owen, Sydney, Liam, Kylee, Landen, Lexi and Jackson.
Donna and Loren moved to Aitkin in 2001 where they enjoyed life on Hanging Kettle Lake.  She worked as the Aitkin City Clerk until her retirement. Donna, our social butterfly, enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, time at home, playing cards, gardening, and also an occasional margarita or two.
A Celebration of Donna’s life will be Saturday, April 2 from 1–4pm at the Aitkin American Legion Lee Post #86.  Burial will be this spring at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Preston, MN.  Arrangements are with Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Aitkin. Obituary Preview: Luther Michael Westman, 76, of Aitkin, passed away Tuesday, March 1, 2022 at his home.  He was born May 31, 1945 in Minneapolis to Clarence and Mildred (Bengston) Westman.  Luther graduated from High School in Minneapolis and went on to Plumbing Trade School in Minneapolis.  Luther was united in marriage to Jeanette Erickson on February 13, 1975 in Minneapolis.  He was a member of PHCC as well as Lions.  Luther enjoyed making maple syrup, playing bingo, snowmobiling and his pets.  Luther will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Luther is preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette and his parents.

Obituary Preview: Allen Gene Kewitsch, 76 of Glen died Sunday, February 27, 2022 at his home.  He was born August 11, 1945 in Milaca to Charlie Albert and Mildred Leona (Larson) Kewitsch.  They lived in Milaca, Mora, and Cambridge before moving to Aitkin in 1958.  In school he wrestled and played football graduating in 1963.
After graduation he worked for Smith's IGA learning how to cut meat.  In 1965 Allen met Judie Mickelson at the store and later at the roller rink in Malmo.  They were united in marriage May 28, 1969 at Glory Baptist Church and made their home in Glen.
He worked as a meat cutter for 45 years, first for Smith’s IGA, then Ryan’s IGA, Aitkin Discount Foods, and Birch Street Meat and Grocery.
He enjoyed camping, fishing, snowmobiling, auctions, and later he enjoyed golfing with his classmates.
He was preceded in death by his baby son David in 1970, brother Morris in 2015, and his parents.
Allen is survived by his wife Judie of Aitkin and brother Darwin of Bemidji, and many other special relatives and friends.

Obituary Preview: Gregory Allan Rosier, 78 of McGregor died Friday, February 25, 2022 at Riverwood Health Care Center in Aitkin. He was born February 13, 1944 in Crosby to Frederick and Gertrude (Hudson) Rosier.  He graduated from Crosby-Ironton High School in 1962.  He attended Brainerd Community College and earned a degree in Metallurgy.  Gregory was united in marriage to Eleanor Mae Ekman on August 13, 1966 in Saint Paul.  They lived in the Twin Cities Area where Gregory worked as the Quality Control and Safety Director for Cherne Contracting in Eden Prairie, building power plants and oil refineries in Duluth and Becker, MN. and several in Maine and California.  In 2002 after retirement they moved to Lawler where Gregory enjoyed fishing, 4-wheeling, bird watching, the wildlife, his cats, a cigar and a beer. He also worked to maintain and grade the Lawler and Salo Township roads.  He was a member of the state and national ASNT, the Lawler Area Community Club and attended the Tamarack Free Lutheran Church.  He was a generous and patient man, helping his friends and neighbors whenever he could.  In 1989 he founded and helped to organize the Rosier Family Reunions.  Gregory loved his family very much. He was preceded in death by his wife Eleanor on September 22, 2019; Brothers: Jim, Rick Jeri, and Kelly; Sister: Ruthann;
and his parents: Fritz and Gertie. Together, they had a son, Jacob Christenson.

Joan Johnson and the two married on March 22, 1952 in Cresco, Iowa.  Bill passed away 6 weeks short of their 70-year anniversary.  Bill worked at Tennant Corporation in Golden Valley until his retirement in 1992 as a welder.  During his life, Bill also had a wood cutting business and was still going out daily to cut wood to heat the house.  In retirement, Bill and Jo ran a sewing business, doing craft shows until they were in their 80’s.  They enjoyed the friends they made as well as staying active.
Bill is preceded in death by his parents; son, Michael; grandson, Jimmy and several siblings.

Obituary Preview: Stephen Christ Poissant, 34 of Brainerd died Saturday, February 12, 2022 in Eden Valley, Meeker County, MN.  He was born March 28, 1987 in Saint Cloud to Stephen Wallace and Janet Marie (Aschenbrenner) Poissant.  Stephen had many names: Stevie, Budger, Bug, Buggy, Uncle Bug, Uncle Buggy, Steve, Pitt.  He worked as a laborer in construction, home remodeling and welding.  He was a very talented tattoo and sketch artist and enjoyed music, creating his own rap songs.  He was a natural athlete, excelling at any sport he would try.  Stephen loved all animals but especially dogs.  He always wanted to start a Pitbull rescue service.  He touched so many people in his short life. People from all walks of life. He was extremely well loved. And he returned that love. He loved kids especially his nieces and nephews. He was a big, tall guy with lots of tattoos. If you were able to get beyond his looks and become his friend, you, not him, you, were the lucky one. He would go out of his way to help you if you needed it. That he was generous to a fault. A room would seem so much brighter when he was in it. He was so full of sunshine, he just glowed. And “that” smile, he had a big beautiful smile that lit up the room when he walked in. And he always had a smile for everybody. A huge smile if he knew you. Since he has passed, so many people have come forward with stories of Stephen’s life. He will be dearly missed. He was preceded in death by his Godmother-Aunt Mary Miller;
Grandparents: Irving and Irene Poissant and Elmer Aschenbrenner. Marilyn Ann Backstrom - December 09, 1938 - February 11, 2022

Obituary Preview: Marilyn Ann Backstrom, 83 of Aitkin, went home to be with her Savior on Friday, February 11, 2022. She was born on December 9, 1938 in Faribault, MN to Lewis and Mary Evelyn (Davis) Backstrom. She grew up and graduated high school in Faribault. She attended Bethel College and graduated with a degree in Sociology and Christian Education.
She moved to Aitkin in 1967 and worked with Aitkin County Social Services helping many residences of Aitkin County for over 35 years. For many years she was a member of Westside Church in Aitkin, serving at various times as Sunday School teacher. She also worked with the church’s AWANA program for 25 years helping the 6th – 8th grade girls.
Marilyn was passionate about Samaritan’s Purse - Operation Christmas Child. The program sends shoeboxes filled with gifts to disadvantaged children around the world. For many years she led this ministry first at Westside Church and then at New Life Church. She was known for her ability to squeeze just one more gift in the shoebox that was already full.
She enjoyed visiting, traveling and playing games with friends and family members. All of her adult life, Marilyn always wanted to be near a lake and bought a home in 1971 on beautiful Lone Lake. She loved canoeing and often camped with her daughters. She also enjoyed watching birds and wildlife. Her two cats also provided her with hours of entertainment.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister Joanne Coleman.
Marilyn is survived by her three adopted daughters, two of whom were from India and all whom she loved dearly: Stephanie Cooper-Lewter of Winston-Salem, NC., Rochelle Alvarez and Elizabeth Backstrom both of Columbia, S.C.; seven grandchildren: Courtney, Nicholas, Samira, Miguel, MyKaila, Mykhi and Charis; one sister Donna Erickson of Idaho; special friend Paul Amenta, and many other friends and relatives.
