Eugene T. Benson - August 19, 1960 - December 12, 2023

Departed: 12/12/2023 (Somers)
Obituary Preview: The Al Held Foundation mourns the death of Eugene “Gene” Benson, an artist and the longtime studio assistant of painter Al Held and later studio manager of the Al Held Foundation. Benson died on December 12, 2023, in Boiceville, New York at age 63.
Born and raised in Connecticut, Benson called the Catskills his home ever since he took a job working in Held’s Boiceville painting studio in 1992. A devoted craftsman and talented artist, Benson played a significant role in the creation of Held’s paintings, some of which are on permanent display in prominent museums around the country. Benson became the collection manager of the successor Al Held Foundation after Held died in 2005 and participated in the posthumous installation of major public art projects including a 60-foot painting at the Jacksonville Public Library and a 50-foot stained-glass window at the federal courthouse in Orlando.
Born August 19, 1960, Benson was one of four children. A natural facility for drawing emerged in his youth, and after graduating Somers (CT) High School in 1978, he attended Paier College of Art to study illustration. After one year, seeking adventure, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, training in Fort Knox as a tank driver and later deploying in Germany. After two years of service, Benson reenrolled in Paier to intensively study drawing and painting, studying with recent Yale MFA graduates Sarah Schuster and Jeffrey Carr. He earned a diploma in 1985.
To establish himself as a young artist he worked for a machine shop and a construction company several days a week while painting landscapes during his free time. In an interview he recalled devising a practice of driving into the country after work and painting en plein air as the sun set into the darkness to surprise himself with the unseen results. The course of Benson’s life altered one weekend in 1990, when he first visited Held’s studio where the friend of a friend worked. Benson immediately fell for Held’s huge palette of acrylic paints lining the wall and submitted his name for the next open position. The call came two years later. Benson continued to maintain his personal art practice and his oil paintings grew increasingly abstracted and structured through his fascination with the modernism of Arthur Dove. He exhibited to critical acclaim in numerous group shows in galleries and museums in Connecticut, the Hudson Valley, and New York City, and had a solo exhibition of his colorful landscapes at Imogen Holloway Gallery, Saugerties, New York. New York Times critic Vivien Raynor praised Benson’s “richly painted view of a village street” displayed at the Stamford Museum in 1989. In the Poughkeepsie Journal, Linda Marston-Reid singled out his work in a group show at the Holloway Gallery in 2014: “Tremper Mountain may be small in size, but the presence of color and shapes is monumental, like the surrounding mountains.”
In recent years, as the Al Held Foundation expanded its public and educational programs, Benson assisted with the presentation of a range of contemporary artists and students installing artwork on the property. He has also led hands-on workshops for students and artists, teaching the techniques of “painting with tape” employed by the Held studio. Standing six foot nine, he wowed onlookers with his graceful wingspan bending and guiding tape into the signature curves and geometric shapes found in Held’s paintings. Benson’s exquisite touch and aesthetic sensibility enriched the property and visitor experience.
Gene is survived by two sisters, Regina Skinner of Somers, CT and Norma Benson Lussier of Somers, CT and brother-in-law, Karl Fleck of Somers, CT as well as nieces and nephews, Luke Lussier, Bethany Dillen, Erich Fleck, Hillary Skinner and Garrett Skinner. He also leaves leaves a dear friend, Mara Held. He was predeceased by his parents, Eugene A. and Hildegarde (Thoben) Benson as well as his sister, Roberta (Benson) Fleck. Eugene's family will receive family and friends on Thursday, December 28, 2023 from 3-5 pm at Somers Funeral Home, 354 Main Street, Somers, CT. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Richard A. Stolarz - April 24, 1930 - November 21, 2023

Departed: 11/21/2023 (Somers)
Obituary Preview: Richard Anthony Stolarz, 93, of Ellington, peacefully passed away on November 21, 2023 surrounded by loved ones. His battle with a recent multitude of medical issues showed his courage in facing life challenges with optimism and tenacity. Despite these obstacles, Richard stayed strong until the end. Richard was born on April 24, 1930, in Rockville, Connecticut. His parents were Polish immigrants who lovingly and successfully raised their nine children on a farm in Ellington. Richard would entertain us with many stories about growing up on their farm on Jobs Hill Road. He and his best friend Tony, would walk to school a mile down the road before classes started so that they could block off the chimney and smoke up the classroom. Of course, to their delight, school would be cancelled. Even though the family was of limited means, Richard did have a bicycle. He was so protective of that bicycle, he would “plant” a pebble on the seat to ensure it wasn’t being ridden by one of his siblings. Richard attended Rockville High School where he was a member of the football team and graduated in
1948. Richard met Maria Sacuta, a petite and pretty Polish immigrant at a Polish picnic in Springfield, Massachusetts. He was smitten and they dated for a time. In 1951, Richard was drafted into the United States Army to serve in the Korean War. He proudly and bravely served from July 11, 1951 to May 11, 1953 when he was honorably discharged. After returning home, Richard and Maria were married on May 31, 1955. Together, they had 67 wonderful years of marriage. Richard and Maria lived in Springfield, Massachusetts before he realized his dream of moving back to the farm in Ellington. In 1968 and 1969, he built their home on a parcel of land at the Stolarz homestead. He was the ultimate handyman and did most of the work on the house by himself. Without a doubt, his house was his pride and joy. He enjoyed walking in the woods and going to the pond where he and his brothers and sisters would skate as children. His favorite pastimes were playing golf, and watching football. Richard and his wife enjoyed traveling to destinations in Maine, Florida, California, New Mexico, Colorado, Nova Scotia and St John, USVI. Richard was a great father who reared his four daughters with great pride, affection and good judgment. He graduated from Hillyer College, Ward School of Electronics in 1956 and worked for Hamilton Standard from 1959 until his retirement in 1991. Richard cherished his Polish heritage and he and Maria were fortunately able to visit his family in Poland on two occasions. The pride he felt for his ethnicity and Catholic faith parallels the patriotism that he embraced for his country.
In addition to his wife Maria, he leaves his daughter, Mary Ann Gambacorta and her husband, Vincent, his daughter, Debra Snow and her husband, Michael, his daughter Diane Stolarz, his daughter Elizabeth Stolarz, his grandchildren, Kevin (and wife Sarah) and Kimberly Gambacorta, Natalie Snow, and Samuel Wysocki, and his great grandchildren, Tyla, Kolton, and Kody Gambacorta. He is survived by his sister, Gertrude Persano. He is predeceased by his parents, Anthony and Sophie, sisters, Emma Stolarz, Phyllis Stolarz, Evelyn Stolarz, Mary Jane DeLisa and Elizabeth Nebelsky and brothers Henry and Theodore “Teddy”. He also leaves his dear friend, his “buddy,” Tony Dombek who remained his best friend for nearly ninety years. Relatives and friends are welcome to join the family for visitation from 9:30 to 11 am on Wednesday, November 29 at the Somers Funeral Home, 354 Main St (Rt. 190), Somers.  A funeral service will follow the visitation at 11 am.  Richard will be laid to rest with Military Honors at Ellington Center Cemetery. Anthony A. Scussel - December 11, 1942 - September 16, 2023

Departed: 09/16/2023 (Somers)
Obituary Preview: Anthony A. "Tony" Scussel, age 80, of Stafford Springs, Connecticut, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2023. A loving husband, father, and grandfather (“Gampa”), Tony was a lifelong resident of Stafford Springs and made a considerable impact on his community. Tony married his high school sweetheart, Roseann, and the couple shared a loving, 60-year marriage wherein they raised two children, Anthony and Angela. In his early days as a father, Tony was an avid fly-fisherman and an enthusiastic Little League coach for both of his children; today, they fondly recall his loud, sometimes disruptive--but always well-intentioned--support for them on the sidelines. With his talent for arranging flowers, he founded The Growth Company in 1979 and managed it tirelessly ever since, growing it into the Enfield institution it is today and brightening countless homes and events with his creations.
Tony was known for his remarkable dedication and drive, continuing to run the business into his eighties and also previously serving as President of both the Italian Club and Rotary Club of Stafford. Despite working long hours all week, he never missed Friday night dancing at Joanna’s Restaurant. His fun-loving spirit also shone through the many trips he took with Roseann, his golf outings with the “Fab Four”, his extravagant Halloween costumes that entertained his grandkids growing up, and his memorable Fourth of July pool parties with friends and family. Underneath the fierceness with which he supported his family—whether on the sidelines of sports games, at weddings and graduations, or through challenging times---was a heart of gold, and often a handmade bouquet to go along with it.
He is survived by his wife, Roseann (Sartori) Scussel; his sister, Elaine Hobart; his son, Anthony C. Scussel, and his wife, Darly Scussel; his daughter, Angela Alton, and her husband, Sean Alton; and his two granddaughters, Hannah Alton and Eve Alton, and two step-grandchildren, Pierre-Carly Desilier and Fritz-Carly Andre. Visitation hours will be held from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, 2023 at Somers Funeral Home 354 Main St., Somers, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Friday Sept. 22, 2023 at St. Edward's Church, 27 Church St., Stafford Springs, CT. (Please meet directly at Church). Committal will follow at St. Edward's Cemetery in Stafford. Donations in Tony's memory may be made to the Rotary Club of Stafford, PO Box 277, Stafford Springs, CT 06076. What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It serves as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with friends, family, and community.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries play a significant role in honoring the life of the deceased, providing closure for those who are grieving, and serving as a historical record of the person's life. They also help to notify others of the person's passing and provide details about funeral services and memorial contributions.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, an obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include a brief biography, accomplishments, and any notable achievements.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and personal preference. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the tribute and help readers remember the person.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online publication?

Contact the publication directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. Some may accept submissions online, while others may require email or phone submissions.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost varies depending on the publication and the length of the obituary. Some newspapers offer free or low-cost options, while others may charge by the word or line.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Can I include charitable donations or memorial contributions in an obituary?
