Joy Lou Ann Thye - May 29, 1950 - May 14, 2022

Departed: 05/14/2022 (Roland)
Obituary Preview: Joy Lou Ann Hermanson Thye was born to a South Dakota farm family on May 29, 1950. She lived up to her name as she traveled through many adventures and trials that took her all over the U.S. and the world. Her parents, Eric & Bernice Hermanson, taught her hard work, love of nature & knowledge, love of life, and love of serving others. She and her brothers and sister attended a one-room country school and then much later SDSU, where they became involved with The Navigators. Through them she met Bo Thye, an Iowa farmer, ISU graduate, and Marine who worked on her family farm. Joy & Bo were married on June 4, 1972, and she graduated as a Registered Nurse. After welcoming their first two daughters, they were sent as missionaries to Bandung, Indonesia with the Navigators. Michelle & Elizabeth joined the family in 1981 and 1983. Liz was a baby when they left their beloved Indonesia to return to the U.S.
Joy was ecstatic to finally land in the small Iowa town of Roland in 1989. She loved life and lived it to the fullest with her trademark blend of joy in nature, community, and nourishing her family and friends with her healthy, homemade food and spiritual encouragement. Prayer walking, swimming, foraging for wild asparagus, and connecting people in her community and all over the world were some of her favorite things. She also prioritized developing her creative side through reading, writing songs & short stories, sewing, and creating crafts with children. Joy never lost her childlike wonder and loved being a Sunday School teacher, an aunt, a foster parent, and an honorary mom/grandma to so many. She found great meaning in attending plays, concerts, and musicals; Joy drank in the beauty of life and the small treasures she saw anywhere and everywhere. At the core of everything Joy believed was the great honor of loving and serving others. She did so in many practical and creative ways with almost everyone she met, but her family was always her priority. Through many losses, Joy never lost hope, and she continued to encourage and comfort others with the hope we have in Jesus. On May 14, 2022 - 15 days before her 72nd birthday - God took her and her beloved mother home to Heaven following a tragic car accident near Sioux Falls, SD. Joy’s absence on Earth leaves a great hole, but her radiant smile and legacy will live on. As she would often end correspondence and texts, “Hugs & hope.”

He started the wrestling program in 1969. He also coached football and track and became the junior high athletic director.
He impacted countless kids through teaching and coaching, always believing both as a means to help kids reach their full potential, taking as much pride in his state champions as he did the ones who struggled to get that one precious win. He taught how to handle your losses as being equally important with the pride you can take in your wins. And that regardless of outcome, it’s important to push yourself, feed the fire within, and enjoy the fun of competition.
His most proud professional accomplishments were inductions into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, the Iowa High School Athletic Association Wrestling Hall of Fame, and the Iowa High School Athletic Directors Hall of Fame.
He loved his small Iowa town and built a life here with Carol, while also supporting his children when they struck out to see more of the world. He loved his coffee group of fellow retired teachers and yearly fishing trips to Canada. He loved attending the high school state wrestling tournament and traveling to the national wrestling tournament each year. And he loved road trips to see his children and grandchildren on the east coast and attending their activities. Along the way, their favorite stops included Nova Scotia and Lake Superior.
He is survived by his best friend and wife Carol, his sisters Patricia and Carol and their families, his two children Deb and Jeff (and wife Dorothy), and his three grandchildren Sydney, Dana, and Sage.
His endless optimism, positivity, compassion, sense of humor, and trademark laugh will be remembered by all who knew him. It was a robust well-lived 76 years, just like he intended.

Obituary Preview: Keith Leroy Higgins (77), beloved husband, father, grandfather, and faithful servant of the Lord, was called to his eternal home by our Heavenly Father on January 28, 2022 surrounded by his wife and children. He led a life of dedicated service to his Christian faith, family, community, and country. Funeral services to honor his life will be held at Bergen Lutheran Church in Roland, Iowa, on Saturday, February 5, 2022 with visitation at 1:00pm and service at 2:00pm.
Keith was born on February 25, 1944 in Iowa City, Iowa, the eldest son of Leroy and Helen Higgins. While growing up in Roland, Iowa, Keith was an active member of Bergen Lutheran Church and excelled at sports, band, choral music, and serving his farming community. Keith graduated from Roland High School (1962) and Augustana University in Sioux Falls, SD (1966) with his sights set on attending law school. However, with the ongoing Vietnam conflict, Keith sacrificed his own goals and volunteered to serve the nation he loved. He was commissioned in the U.S. Air Force in 1967, earned his pilot wings in 1968, then flew two consecutive combat tours over the skies of North Vietnam. During this time, he met his future wife, Marian Hawrylak (Cairnbrook, PA), and the two were married on September 11,1971 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Victorville, CA.
Keeping his family at the forefront of every decision he made, Keith returned to civilian life in 1979 and settled his young family in Hesperia, CA. While working as a corporate pilot, Keith resumed his life-long goal of obtaining a law degree and graduated first in his class from Citrus Belt Law School in 1986. During his distinguished law career spanning over two decades, Keith was a partner of two firms, practiced with State Fund of California, and served in several leadership positions, including Deputy City Attorney of Victorville and Barstow and Director of the High Desert Bar Association. Amongst his colleagues and judges, Keith was regarded as a meticulous and dedicated professional with an exemplary work ethic, leadership, and ability to secure favorable results, especially with difficult and complex cases. Keith retired in 2010 and relocated with his wife to Holly Springs, NC to be near his daughter’s growing family.
Above all, Keith was first and foremost devoted to his faith in Christ, humbly serving others, and loving his wife, children, and grandchildren. While living in Hesperia, CA, he was a devoted member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Victorville, CA. He dedicated his personal and professional talents to the service of the church and served in a variety of roles to include church council president, Sunday school teacher and various other ministries; the church cross he built with his sons still stands on the Trinity facade to this day. Later, Keith became a member of Abiding Presence Lutheran Church in Fuquay Varina, NC.
Although proud of his professional accomplishments, Keith would consider his family his greatest legacy. Throughout his life, Keith never lost sight of what truly mattered. He always had time for his wife, children and grandchildren, and would make himself available to them without fail. He would listen intently and give counsel when asked with kind words of love and encouragement. He had a quick wit and could diffuse tense situations with his humor, stories, and well-timed puns. He was an avid reader, life-long learner, and possessed a keen understanding of a wide range of subjects. Keith was happiest when he was gardening, woodworking, spending time at the beach with his grandchildren, watching baseball games with his wife, discussing his love of flying with his sons, and reminiscing with his family about his Iowan-Norwegian roots. Through the way he lived his own life, he bestowed a strong sense of faith, patriotism and selflessness to both his children and his grandchildren. Keith was the quiet pillar of strength and support in the family and words cannot express how deeply he was loved and will be missed. May he rest in peace with our Lord and Risen Savior until we are reunited with him for eternity.
Keith is survived by his wife, Marian, of over 50 years; children Julia (Brian) Taylor, Matthew (Melissa) Higgins, Nathan (Stacy) Higgins, and eight grandchildren: Ava, Emilia, Reese, Hannah, Isla, Zachary, Jack, and Christian. He is also survived by his brother, Robert (Maripat) Higgins, mother-in-law Margaret Hawrylak, several cousins and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Helen (Osheim) and Leroy Higgins, and brother Richard Higgins. As Keith has entered into God’s presence, we trust he has heard the Apostle Matthew’s words: His master said to him, “Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.” (Matthew 25:23 ESV)

He was the adopted son of Paul and Judy (Riese) Teig and grew up on the Teig Farm with a love for animals and field work. Aaron was baptized and confirmed at Bergen Lutheran Church. After finding his love, Genny, and her two sons, they soon became a family. The family was completed when their son, Zachary, was born. Aaron loved being “Dad” and took his role seriously. He treasured all their time together, but fishing with Zach was always a highlight - especially seeing him haul in a BIG catch. As Aaron’s health issues increased over the years, Zach was his constant support and JOY! Aaron will be remembered and greatly missed by many, especially his son, Zachary; parents, Paul & Judy; Zachary's mom, Genny Shepley; Zach’s brother, Jay Hutchinson, foster brothers, Tim & Tye Hegstrom; aunts & uncles Rich & Judy Teig, Gary & Pat Teig, Lou & Jan Riese, Lorrie Riese, Karen Riese Hill, Becky Riese Baedke, Duane & Claudia Riese; and cousins include Brenda, Ellen, Stacey, Tracy, Tim, Brent, Ryan, Adam, Lucas, Cody, Jacki, Jaime and countless friends!
We are all comforted by Aaron’s strong faith, and reassured he is being welcomed into eternal life by his grandparents, Hubert and Mildred Teig, and Darwin and Hope Riese, his uncle, Glen Riese, and Zachary’s brother, Xavier Shepley.
A special thank you for the health care staff of Mary Greeley Medical Center and the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, and also Pastor John Sheahan of Bergen Lutheran Church.
Memorials may be directed to Judy Teig for Zachary's education fund, or Bergen Lutheran Church.
