Departed: 03/12/2024 (Marion)
Obituary Preview: Paul G. Mally left his earthly home to meet his Heavenly Father and reunite with his beloved wife, Nancy on Tuesday morning, March 12, 2024.
He was born on April 21, 1934, in Painesville, Ohio to Clayton and Esther (Springer) Mally. A proud alum of Worthington High School class of 1952, he captained the football team and excelled in track before furthering his education at The Ohio State University and serving in the U.S. Army for two years. On March 23, 1957, Paul married the love of his life, Nancy G. Mosher, and they shared 63 years of marriage until her death in 2020. Together, they built a home in Waldo, OH where they raised their three sons. Dedicated to building strong family ties, they created enduring memories during trips to their Canadian cabin, where fishing, snowmobiling, family, and friend's bonds flourished. During these trips they seized the opportunity of allowing others to experience the wonders of nature and learn to love the relaxing life of being near the water. Paul and Nancy's legacy of love extended to their canine companions too. They loved Airedales, who shared in their adventures. Paul's last Airedale, Rocky, is staying within the family, but he certainly misses the loving touch of his "human dad"! Paul's love of his Lord and Savior was shown in his love of others and willingness to help whenever needed. He enjoyed working on projects inside and out. He especially enjoyed supervising his grandchildren with their projects while giving advice. He had a quiet manner, but his orneriness was evident to those who knew him well. Those closest to him "he never met a chocolate chip cookie he didn't like."
In addition to his parents, Paul was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy, and his sisters and their spouses, Ann (Alfred) Gartman and Esther (Bill) Johncox, and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Joan, and John Wood. Mary and Russ could be found spending time together in their garden, with Dora the dog, and George the cat, next to them. Mary always wanted to help others and donated to St. Jude’s Children's Hospital every month in honor of her grand-niece, Gabby.
Mary is survived by a son, Shawn (Danielle Millisor) Dunn; grandchildren, Chelsie Dunn (Joshua Bennett), Kimberlynn Brown, and Cierra Millisor (Kole Shepherd); great-children, Lincoln and Mia; longtime partner, Russ Ward; and sisters, Ruth Ann Dunn and Donna Queen.

James William Grimes - March 01, 1951 - February 15, 2024

Departed: 02/15/2024 (Marion)
Obituary Preview: James W. “Jim” Grimes, age 72, of Marion, died peacefully on Thursday, February 15, 2024, at Marion General Hospital surrounded by his loving family following an extended illness.
On March 1, 1951, Jim was born in Marion, Ohio, the younger of two children of the late William Earl “Bill” and Olive “Virginia” (Hoover) Grimes. He graduated from Marion Harding High School in the class of 1969.
Jim grew up hunting, boating, and fishing with this dad and many friends at a family cottage which led to a life of enjoyment and sharing of the outdoors. He was also a guitarist in his early years, having played in local bands the Mustangs and the Zimmerman Blue alongside lifelong friends Steve Mull, Dave Johnston, and Mark Edington, among others. He also played in Ambyr out of Mansfield with friends Vaughn Sizemore, Dave Porter, Joe Wright, Mike McGraw, and Brian Bryant.
Shortly following graduation, Jim enlisted to serve his beloved country in the US Air Force and to help his fellow countrymen in the Vietnam War. He served as a forward air traffic controller and radio operator, and had been stationed in numerous war zones throughout Vietnam. Upon his return to the States, he served as a military police officer in Omaha, Nebraska to finish out his active-duty service. Jim later extended his service in the US Air Force Reserves, putting in 32 years of total service in the Air Force. Jim received a Certificate of Recognition from the U.S. Air Force Communications Command while with the 907th unit. He also had received a Technical Services Medal from the former Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces. He even participated in humanitarian projects in the Air Force Reserves, serving for two tours to Costa Rica, to help build houses and schools. He wanted to show people of other countries the good in the hearts of the United States and their armed forces. While a proud vet, Jim often expressed that in part his service dedication was in hopes his beloved sons would avoid the tragedy of war.
Upon his honorable discharge from active duty, Jim returned home to Marion, Ohio, where he reunited with fellow vets and old band members and began playing gigs around Marion. On every break the band took, Jim made his way over to Steve’s cousin, Christine “Chris” Berridge, and they would be together from that first gig forward. After a three-and-a-half-year courtship, Jim and Chris were married on February 21, 1976. They were a few days shy of celebrating their 48th anniversary.
Jim enjoyed working with his hands and he was a fast study and great with people, who could learn any trade he put his mind to. He started his career as a machinist at the Marion Power Shovel where his father had been a manufacturing engineer, and then worked construction with a home builder from Upper Sandusky. He then went to Marion Technical College, and earned an Associate degree in Computer Science with a minor in Accounting. Then, after a short stint working for Marion General Hospital, he then worked for Gossing Construction, a premier home builder in the Delaware community, where he also become a licensed electrician and worked his way up to being their primary electrician during his 17 years with the company. Next Jim worked at Whirlpool Corporation, filling several production roles where he retired after twenty years. Never one to sit still, he then took a part-time job with the Marion County Developmental Disabilities Board, helping with accounts receivables, charting, and finding his way to help in the shop whenever he could.
Whenever Jim was not working, he enjoyed “fishing, fishing and fishing” his family joked. Early on Jim and Chris’s marriage, they loved going to Jim’s parent’s cottage at Indian Lake, where he would spend all day on the water if he could. Over the years, he had five or six boats that he loved. After Jim’s father passed, they had to sell the cottage, and their goal was to find a way to get a new place of their own for their family to enjoy at Indian Lake. In the fall of 2014, they accomplished their dream, getting a trailer on the lake. They cherished the additional 9 years of memories made at Indian Lake, with their boys, family, and new and old friends around the lake.
Jim’s love of fishing and boating was bestowed in his sons. He never hesitated to fish a bass tournament with his son Seth, and he loved night fishing with his son Joe. He rejoiced in watching his youngest grandson Alex learn to drive a boat and to catch bluegill around the dock. As ‘papaw’ he was an endless source of enthusiastic fishing stories and advice.
In Jim’s younger years, he enjoyed going hunting with his father, Bill. He stopped hunting for years, until his sons, Seth and Joe, got him back into it. They enjoyed hunting pheasant and duck, but more importantly they cherished being together in the beautiful of the wilderness. They also shared a love of tent camping as much as possible. Jim enjoyed going on hiking adventures with the family, and he and Chris realized their dream of hiking in the rocky mountains later in life.
To be officially welcomed into the Berridge family, you must be willing to pick up a guitar and join in the jam sessions. Growing up, Steve Mull helped Jim earn that rite of passage, instilling his love of music at a young age. He loved playing with Steve in his early bands. After some time passed, John and Andy Berridge, and Chris and Jim formed another family band, with Jim being their bass guitarist. For several years, Jim and Chris enjoyed playing music at a coffee shop in Mt. Victory. Jim loved playing anything from the Beatles, 60’s Rock & Roll, James Taylor, and Steely Dan, to one of his favorites, Kansas.
A skilled craftsman, Jim loved woodworking in his shop. He could build or fix anything he put his mind to. He especially loved building furniture for Chris and family and sharing his many trade skills with his sons. He helped countless family, friends, neighbors, and acquaintances with home and vehicle projects stemming from his mastered trades, and for nothing but love and friendship in return. Recently, he loved rebuilding boats with his son, Joe.
Jim was put on this earth to be an outdoorsman, a craftsman, and a musician, but more importantly to be a great husband, devoted father, adored grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, and cousin. He lived a life of service, with almost unlimited giving to others. He truly had a heart of gold and would do anything for anyone. He was beyond generous, always putting the needs of others before his own, and he would be the first to give you the shirt off his back. He was always authentic and put his heart into all that he took on and all whom he befriended, which was everyone. He had a laid-back, easy-going personality, and a quick conversation would turn into a 30-minute conversation where you felt like you made a best friend.
Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Chris Grimes of Marion; two sons: Seth (Julie) Grimes of Powell, and Joe (Michelle Congrove) Grimes of Waldo; three grandchildren: Alexander “Alex” Grimes, Chris and Evan; sister, Jackie (David) Strickland of Prattville, AL; five in-laws: Nancy (Frank) Shamblin, John Berridge, Julie (Rickey) Slone, Tim (Sheri) Berridge, and Andy (Christina) Berridge; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Kathryn Seedoff Whitehead - November 03, 1924 - February 04, 2024

Departed: 02/04/2024 (Marion)
Obituary Preview: It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Kathryn “Kay” Seedoff Whitehead, age 99, formerly of Marion, Ohio, who went to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 4, 2024, at the Willows of Willard after a significant life well lived.
On November 3, 1924, Kay was born in Rockford, Illinois, the oldest of three children of the late Ingrid Marie (Swanson) and Arnold Gunnar Seedoff. Her childhood was strongly influenced by her Swedish speaking grandmother, Hannah C. Gustafson Swanson, who immigrated to America through Ellis Island.
Kay attended nursing school in Chicago, Illinois. Friends pre-arranged a date for her with Northwestern medical student William Hayes “Bill” Whitehead, and from there the rest is history. They had fond memories of walks on Michigan Ave. and Lakeshore Dr. during their courtship and like many young couples during WWII, Kay postponed nursing school to be married on October 4, 1945. Bill had enlisted in the Navy as a doctor and served at the naval base in Corona, CA where they lived.
At WWII’s end, they settled in Marion OH where Bill started his private family medical practice and they would lovingly raise their five daughters: Delia, Margaret, Anne, Jane, and Lucia. Kay’s unconditional love, unwavering support, and boundless kindness shaped the foundation of her family and left an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to know her.
Kay decided to resume her dream of becoming a nurse and returned to nursing school in her mid-50’s. She graduated with honors at Marion Technical College in1979 with steadfast determination, perseverance, and hours of dedicated study. She then joined Bill in his private family practice. Their impact extended well beyond the walls of the family practice as they identified the need to bring a Hospice to Marion and then served individuals by providing comfort to those requiring end-of-life care. After retiring from their medical practice in March1988, they continued their service of love for the Marion community by dedicating endless hours toward opening and operating Marion’s first Free Health Clinic, now the Center Street Community Health Center. Countless volunteers dedicated their time and efforts at the Free Clinic for those with inadequate health care due to limited resources.
In 1996, Kay’s world changed with a diagnosis of Macular Degeneration, leaving her nearly blind within 5 months. In true Kay-fashion, that would not keep her down, and she was determined to somehow share with others what she had learned about sourcing low vision services. In January1998, Kay invited 7 friends for coffee and pastries to enlist their help by serving on a board with the goal of providing individuals with information to access low vision services. The initial meeting in March1998 drew an unexpected 55 attendees of which 43 had low vision. This meeting set in motion years of successful Eye-to-Eye Low Vision meetings in Marion which continues today, celebrating their 25th year anniversary in March of 2023.
A faithful Christian, Kay was an active and dedicated member of Central Christian Church, where she served on committees and provided service to members through the library and tape ministries. She served on the Boards of Marion Free Health Clinic and Eye-to-Eye. She received a recognition award from the American Council of the Blind, as well as volunteered for Meals on Wheels.
Outside of her work, service and philanthropic efforts, Kay was an avid reader, and quilting became an important part of her life. She cherished the weekly fellowship meetings with her quilting friends. She also loved her canine companions, especially her schnauzers and vizslas. Bill and Kay’s Lakeside cottage, Summer Place, was a family treasure of rest and relaxation, where cherished family memories were made as the cottage burst at the seams with children and grandchildren.
Known for her incredible persuasiveness, Kay had a unique ability to rally support for various causes and individuals in need. Whether advocating for patients in the medical setting or championing community initiatives, she approached every challenge with a combination of compassion and determination that inspired those around her. Her warm smile, gentle spirit, and selfless nature will forever be etched in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her.
Left to cherish her memory are her five daughters: Delia “Dee” Pinyerd of Carmel, IN, Margaret Bien of Glencoe, MD, Anne (Terry) Conley of Willard, OH and Jane (Brad) Nelson of Willard, OH, and Lucia (Alan) Faust of Cincinnati OH; 9 grandchildren: Michael Pinyerd, David (Kateryna) Pinyerd, James (Jessica) Pinyerd, Jason (Dana) Conley, Kristen (Michael) Eboh, Ben (Malissa) Nelson, Matthew (Emma) Nelson, Emily (Jeffrey) Rigoglioso, and Chris Faust; 5 step-grandchildren; Michael, Joe, Melanie, Monica, Keith; 18 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Ragnhild Seedoff of Round Lake Beach, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Including her parents, Kay was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dr. Bill Whitehead on May 25, 2005; son-in-law, Frank Bien; brother David Seedoff; and brother-and sister-in-law, John and Marion Seedoff.
