Tim was a Mount Vernon High School and Knox County Joint Vocational School graduate. He was an avid Nascar fan and loved rooting for all the Cleveland sports teams.

Tim is survived by his mother Esther Connell of Columbus, OH; sister Vonda (Kenny) Morris of Columbus, OH; aunts Joyce Bell of Mount Vernon, OH, Norma (Bob) McFarland of New York; uncle Ron Mumaw of Mount Vernon, OH.

Tim was preceded in death by his father Sonny Mumaw, a brother Eric Mumaw and his paternal grandparents and maternal grandparents. There are no planned services at this time. Tim will be laid to rest in Forest Cemetery in Fredericktown, OH

He was born on June 5, 1957, in Newark, Ohio to the late Joseph Arnold and Alice (Miles) Becker. David was employed at New Hope Industries where he performed custodial duties at the rest area on Interstate 71. In 2008 David moved to New Mexico and participated in the Special Olympics where he competed in golf, basketball, and softball. He moved back to Ohio in 2012. David enjoyed watching WWE Wrestling, playing his PlayStation 4, and cheering on his favorite NFL team, the Cleveland Browns.

He is survived by his sisters, Mary Hoover, Brenda (Robert) Deal, Linda Chapman, Crickit Binyaman, Virginia Billman; his brothers, Pete Becker, Joe (Patricia) Becker; his canine companion Scooby Doo; and numerous nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his nephews Romeo Deal and Jacob Becker.

She was born on March 10, 1954, in Mount Vernon, Ohio, the daughter of Francis and Betty (Lewis) Rowe. Karen was a 1972 graduate of Mount Vernon High School and later graduated from Bliss Business College in Columbus, Ohio.

Karen spent most of her life in Ohio but found her true home in the warmth of Bonita Springs, Florida, where she lived for the past 8 years. Her vibrant personality and unwavering opinions made her a force to be reckoned with. She always spoke her mind and lived life on her own terms. She adored her grandchildren and cherished every moment spent with them. In her final days, Karen was at peace with her journey.

She is survived by her son, Jonathan (Alison) Cochran of Sunbury; three grandchildren, Justin Cochran, Kylie Cochran, and Lindsey Cochran; her sister, Sharon (Jerry) Lamb of Mount Vernon; her brother, Gary (Margaret) Rowe of Mount Vernon; nieces and nephews, Marie (Brett) Coffing, Clay Lamb, Travis (Jessie) Rowe, and Ashlee (Nate) Armstrong; and great niece and nephews, Ryley Magers, Hudson and Brody Coffing, and Jaret and Olivia Armstrong. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Herndon, and a sister, Susan Rowe.

A graveside service will be held at the Brandon Cemetery. The Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home of Mount Vernon is honored to serve the family of Karen Sue (Rowe) Herndon.

She moved back to the Mount Vernon area approximately seven years ago.

She is survived by her brothers along with many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins, as well as several great nieces and nephews.

Tim was know as a hard-working, God-fearing, patriotic man. He was an avid collector of hats. The hats reflected places he went, products he used, people he met and, of course, his favorite team (Ohio State).

An enthusiast of classic muscle cars and Volkswagen Beetles, Tim's eyes lit up every time he talked about them. He found joy in the art of building model cars, each tiny detail a testament to his patience and craftsmanship. This passion continued into tinkering with older cars. He enjoyed restoring them and passing them on to new owners.

Tim found solace and joy in the tranquility of working in the yard and garden. Cultivating the earth and greenery brought him a sense of fulfillment and contentment.

Yet, amidst his hobbies and pursuits, Tim's heart belonged to his family. Nothing brought him greater joy than spending time with those he held dear, cherishing each moment shared and weaving bonds that would endure beyond his time.

The impact of Tim Canter's presence will continue to resonate in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His spirit will forever remain alive in the memories he created and the love he shared.

Good or bad, she was always finding the best in everyone and offered a lending hand to those in need. She enjoyed fishing, painting, finding a bargain at a garage sale, and dressing up for special occasions, but most important, Leslie enjoyed the times when all of her family was together.

Leslie is survived by her father, her sons, Drew Ulliman of Howard, Jayden Johnson of Utica and Zach Johnson of Utica, four grandchildren, Pierce and Parker Ulliman, Raeghan and Daxton Johnson, a brother, Corey (Katie) Beach and a nephew Griffin Beach.

She was preceded in death by her mother.

Debbie is survived by her husband, David Phillips; sons, Dana (Dayna) Phillips, James (Christina) Phillips; 2 grandchildren, Gracie and Trinity; a sister, Louise Rivero; a brother, Rober Miller; several nieces and nephews; and canine companion, Maverick.

Along with her parents, Debbie is preceded in death by a son; Robert Eugene; a brother, Danny Miller; sisters, Jeannie Ciggans, and Connie Tarbox.

Lillian was the former co-owner and operator of Tangles in Mount Vernon and she also worked at G.R. Smith’s Hardware in Mount Vernon. She was a member of Christ the King Community Church near Fredericktown. Lillian’s greatest love was spending time with her family.

Lillian is survived by her children, Markettys (Keith) Dailey of Newark, Tim (Rhonda) Crowe of Mansfield and Jeff (Brandie) Crowe of Mount Vernon; 12 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren; and a special sister-in-law, Carolyn Ruhl of Fredericktown.

In addition to her parents, Lillian was preceded in death by her husband, Warner E. “Gene” Crowe on March 17, 2017; grandchildren, Miah Crowe and David Crowe.

Russell L. Keifer, Sr. - April 13, 1930 - April 15, 2024

Obituary Preview: Russell Lowell Keifer, 94, passed away April 15, 2024, at his home, surrounded by family.

His life was defined by a strong loyalty and devotion to those he loved, as well as an unwavering commitment to deeply held personal values of hard work, authenticity, and drive.

While never one to suffer fools or bullies gladly, Russell was forever ready to extend a hand or assist a friend, always following his instinct to help others.

Russell had an intrinsic love and aptitude for all things mechanical, an ability that manifested itself in a long and successful career, as well as in an impressive range of pastimes, from aviation to precision instrument and timepiece repair to manufacturing of firearms and small engines.

He masterfully transformed airplanes, vintage automobiles and old tractors from salvage to top condition and often applied his considerable talents and the tools of his trade to provide service to friends, neighbors, and family.

This love of machines and a fascination with how they worked remained at the center of Russell’s universe for his entire life.

Russell was born in Huntington, West Virginia, on April 13, 1930, to the late Herman Selkirk Keifer and Josephine Elizabeth Strank.

In 1946, young Russell joined the Navy, despite being one year short of the minimum enlistment age of 17. To work around this age requirement, Russell presented a birth certificate that was, perhaps, less than genuine, and soon found himself aboard the Essex-class aircraft carrier USS Valley Forge.

During a four-year tour of duty as a torpedoman, Russell saw the world. Ports of call included Australia, Hawaii, Hong Kong, Iran, Panama, Tunisia and Turkey. Among the ship’s notable guests were the Shah of Iran and South Pacific Fleet Commander Admiral William F. “Bull” Halsey.

Upon Russell’s Honorable Discharge from the Navy, he began a career at North American-Rockwell Aviation in Columbus, Ohio, where he served as a Heat Treat Inspector, Aircraft Inspector, Clearance Delivery Supervisor, Quality Control Supervisor and Technical Writer.

On December 29, 1956, he married Lois Ann Talbott. They raised a family in Knox County and remained married for 67 years. They were members of the Berlin Methodist Church.

Russell retired at the age of 55 after 35 years of service at Rockwell. He and Lois Ann then traveled throughout the U.S. in their little camper, touring many state and national parks and visiting nearly all of America’s Lower 48.

Russell was an accomplished aviator, attaining a Private Pilot certification in the 1950s after passing the FAA written exam with a rare perfect score. He flew throughout the Midwest in a vintage Taylorcraft BC12D he restored and maintained with his own hands.

He was a cautious and skilled but often bold and daring pilot. Tales of his stick-and rudder exploits included emergency landings in muddy farm fields and getting in a predicament with the FAA for unintentionally busting VFR minimums in declining weather near Port Columbus. He enjoyed honing his skills by performing wingovers, loops, spins and slips along with touch-and-go landings in extremely windy weather. He once nearly careened off a runway when a kitten he was ferrying for a family member dug its claws into his back during takeoff. Whatever the situation, Russell’s skill and deep knowledge of his aircraft’s capability saw him home safely.

Russell experienced his share of hardship and challenge, both of which he faced with stoicism and resilience. At the age of 86, a farm accident left him with a crushed pelvis, trauma which took Russell down a long road of surgery and physical therapy. However, he ultimately returned to the things he loved, working in his shop, and even cutting firewood until the final two years of his life. When pain and diminished mobility made these activities no longer possible, he pivoted to other interests, learning to use a tablet computer to search the Internet, watch videos and follow current events.

Honoring the past and those who came before was important to Russell. Later in his life, he developed a keen interest in the Keifer family’s origins in Germany. In 1995, after 12 years of painstaking, pre-Internet research, he published a comprehensive book detailing the Keifer genealogy. The book resides in the Library of Congress and the Mormon Church archives and has become a cornerstone for those researching the Keifer genealogy. In his prose on the family’s roots, he wrote this: “Our ancestors were people not unlike ourselves. They lived everyday lives much as we do today. They worked, loved, sought better lives, fought wars, suffered and died… If we have no knowledge of our forefathers, and the hardships and sacrifices they endured, then we can never fully appreciate that which they provided to us, and, in our incognizance, may give no thought to preserving our inheritance for future generations.”

Russell was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Richard Keifer. He is survived by His wife, Lois Ann Keifer; two sons, Russell (Marsha) Keifer Jr., and Eric Keifer; a grandson, Barry Keifer; and beloved cats Pepper and Nellie. But Bill’s pride was in his family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Flossie (Mullins) Spaulding; and his siblings, Dora Lee Blunk, Denny, William Russell, Bobby Gene, and June Testani. Loving husband of Polly for 72 years, he is survived by her and by his four children: Michael (Kim), Scott (Jeanne), Glenn (Kimberly), and Gail (Walt). He also leaves behind his 13 grandchildren, and his 12 great-grandchildren.

The variety of his interests and experiences was eclipsed only by the greatness of his heart. To those who love him best, his steadfast love and strength endure as his legacy. His family finds hope in the knowledge that he is now living in the perfect love of Jesus Christ.

Steve Jr, as he was called by his family, graduated from Lakewood High School in 1976. He received his Criminal Justice bachelor’s degree from Bowling Green State University in 1980.

Steve was a devoted member of the Westlake Police Department from 1981-2010. He retired after 29 years of devoted public service. After retirement, Steve obtained land in Fredericktown, built a lovely retirement home with a pole barn, fishing pond, and enjoyed the fruits of his labor.

Steve was very interested in artifacts, rocks, and Native American culture. He was an avid reader while also keeping his home complete with chickens, fruit trees, and other gardening adventures. Steve loved animals, especially dogs. Steve has had two rottweilers, and two pit bulls. All who were and are very well trained. He was the dog whisperer, having rescued many abused dogs.

Steve and his father were very handy and creative, milling all the trim in his home along with making many items for his friends and family.

Steve was a devoted father, brother, uncle, and cousin to many. Steve is preceded in death by his mother Janice (Hand) Leachman and father Stephen Browne Leachman Sr. He is survived by his daughter Maya Carson Leachman of Gilbert, AZ; his sister Ruth McMakin (Leachman) Fitz of Lorain, Ohio; his niece Dorothy Leachman Fitz of Cleveland, Ohio; his sister Dorothy Hayes Leachman, and her husband Jerome C. In addition to her parents, Patricia was preceded in death by her husband George Courtright; her son Dr. Goerge Courtright II; her sisters, Rosemary Corriveau, Jayne Nance; her brother Benny Metzger; and her son-in-law Glen Deboard.

Ann Elizabeth Bruere - May 28, 1932 - April 01, 2024

Obituary Preview: In the late afternoon of April 1, 2024, Ann Elizabeth Mandeville Bruere peacefully passed at The Laurels of Mount Vernon. Her first appearance was in Cleveland when she was born to Theodore S. Mandeville and Ruth Patterson Mandeville on May 28, 1932. Apparently the First of the Month seems to trend for dying in her immediate family. Her husband John Bruere passed October 1, 1996. Twenty years later her son John Mandeville Bruere died on August 1, 2016. Her brother, Judge Theodore S. Mandeville did not follow the rules and predeceased her on July 8, 2020.

She will be missed by her two daughters, Elizabeth (Betsy) Barber in North Carolina and Helen Taylor Bruere in Montana because there was no one better to talk politics with than Mom.

Her grandchildren who will carry on with Ann in their memories are Jeannette Rice McKenzie, Neil Bruere Rice, Andrew Mandeville Bruere along with Sarah Elizabeth Bruere and John Joseph Bruere. Jenny more than anyone takes after her grandmother in looks and personality.

Her great-granddaughters, Taylor Leigh McKenzie and Ariana Starr Bruere will also miss her many stories. Since they lived in the same town, Taylor was lucky enough to get to listen to some of her personal history which most great-grandchildren don’t get to hear from the third generation before them. Ann considered Stephen McKenzie as her great-grandson (whom she said had an inner shining light that always made her happy).

Ann attended Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in 1951-52. She and John were married on October 4, 1952, at Fairmount Presbyterian Church. It was officiated by her new father-in-law, Dr. John Bruere, minister of Calvary Presbyterian Church, which they soon attended.

After the births of her 3 children and working part-time at the Cleveland Heights Library, she worked for Medusa Cement for about 10 years, then Premier Industries for another 10 years. She gained knowledge on trusts and foundations at both places, so she easily transitioned to do trust tax accounting at Ameritrust Bank until she retired.

Hobbies and outside activities kept Ann busy before she worked full-time. She continued the tomato garden started by her mother and grew enough to share with neighbors. Her cherry tomatoes were particularly tasty. Ann volunteered as a Brownie Troop Leader, then a Girl Scout leader until her initial troop moved on to junior high school. She ensured the Scouts were exposed to different crafts, camping, and organization. Her proudest troop leader moment was when she and her co-leader sat by a fire while the girls completely set up camp and cooked dinner without any assistance from them. Self-sufficiency and self-reliance were instilled in Troop 934. Another of Ann’s hobbies was genealogy, which is why so many family names and dates are here. She found that obituaries are a tremendous source of information; so we are ensuring future generations will get some help from us. Love of genealogy was passed on to her family along with her collection of papers and notebooks. (Thanks, Mom!) Eventually Ann and John purchased land in Apple Valley in Howard, Ohio for their future retirement home. They camped in the Apple Valley campground while clearing the land, dreaming, and planning for their retirement home. She was using home architect software to plan for locating furniture, where outlets and lighting should be, and, importantly, kitchen functionality (which was a dream kitchen!) Ann also had a strong hand in design and function when they remodeled their home in Cleveland Heights. (We always thought she should have been a Mechanical Engineer, but that option was not suggested to girls in high school at the time.) Suddenly the city girl was in the country and loved it. More space for gardening, quilting, sewing, her dogs, cat, and her duck!

After John died in 1996, she became friends with her neighbor, Richard Conrad. They eventually had a Presbyterian church wedding and moved into Richard’s home. He was totally surprised when Ann said she wanted a job, then went out and got one that same day. He’d never met any woman as determined as Ann was to hold her own and be self-sufficient. Her need to learn also drove her. So that she would understand the inner workings of computers, she took a class and actually built her own computer.

When Richard died in 2020, luckily there was a small rental home down the street from her granddaughter Jenny and husband Wes McKenzie. Ann still had a small garden, but Wes was a godsend by helping her around the house as she grew older. Jenny bore the brunt of transitioning her into The Laurels after her aneurysm August 31, 2021. For which her mother and aunt will be forever grateful.

Ray Harrison Bumgarner - January 15, 1932 - March 30, 2024

Obituary Preview: Ray Harrison Bumgarner, 92, of Howard, Ohio passed away unexpectedly Saturday morning, March 30, 2024 at the Grand Strand Medical Center while wintering in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. He was born on January 15, 1932 in Elizabeth, West Virginia to the late Roy H. and Nellie (Pettit) Bumgarner.

Ray graduated from Wirt County High School in Elizabeth in 1950 where he was the Class President. He furthered his education at West Virginia Tech and earned a degree in printing management in 1954. Ray enlisted in the Army in 1954 and was stationed in Tokyo with the Pacific Stars and Stripes until 1956. On May 26, 1962, Ray married the love of his life, Mary Jane Heft and they spent the next 61 years together, raising a family and traveling.

Ray was a former member of the First Baptist Church in Athens and currently a member of the Faith Baptist Church in Mount Vernon. While living in Elizabeth, Ray was a member of the Golden Horseshoe Club and worked at the Wirt County Journal. Ray retired with 32 years from the McBee Systems in Athens.

Ray is survived by his wife, Mary Jane (Heft) Bumgarner; daughter, Heidi Jane (Don) Foos of Mount Vernon and son, David Ray (Tiffany) Bumgarner of Longs, South Carolina; grandchildren, Kai Josef Harrison Bumgarner, Joseph Donald Foos, Meghan Elisabeth Foos, Amanda Jane Foos, and Joseph Nicholson; sister, Sally Ann West of South Charleston, WV, and brother, Robert (Dora Jean) Bumgarner of Marietta.

In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by an infant brother, George Bumgarner.

The family will receive friends from 1p.m. until the time of a funeral service at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 5, 2024 at the Faith Baptist Church, 8764 Martinsburg Rd., Mount Vernon. A graveside service will be held at Noon on Saturday, April 6, 2024 in the K of P Cemetery in Elizabeth, WV.
