Evelyn P. Flengas - June 09, 1940 - January 25, 2024

Obituary Preview: Evelyn P. Flengas, age 83 of Chesapeake, VA passed passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on January 25, 2024. She was born on June 9, 1940 to the late Henry and Eva (Kelly) Venes of Aldershot, England. Evelyn married James P. Flengas on December 22, 1962, and started a family shortly thereafter.
Evelyn was a proud military wife who supported her husbands career in the US Navy. Their family moved all over the country and even lived in England and Spain. Never the one to shy away from adventure or challenge herself, Evelyn became a bit of a celebrity in Rota, Spain when she was a DJ for the American Forces Radio Station. She also enjoyed playing softball and pinochle for hours with her closets friends.
After settling back in the United States she took a position working for the Naval Air Credit Union. She prioritized her children’s middle and high school activities and throughly enjoyed being a band parent for the Kempsville Marching Chiefs.
Evelyn was a lifelong lover and advocate of animals. She is best known locally for founding the non-profit organization, Evelyn’s Wildlife Refuge.
She tirelessly helped build a community of volunteers while educating the public on how to coexist with local wildlife. In 2011 she wrote and published a book, “A Ride on the Wildside,” which all proceeds benefit the refuge. In addition, National Geographic featured Evelyn’s Wildlife Refuge in the documentary entitled, “Backyard Bandit.” Her legacy continues today headed by Meredith Broadhurst.
She is lovingly survived by her husband James (Jim); siblings: John Venes and Mary Coy, her children and grandchildren, as well as many other family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her brother Alan Kelly.
A celebration of life will take place on Monday, February 5, 2024 at Snelling Funeral Home, located at 1144 George Washington HWY 7:00-8:30pm. Interment will be February 6, 2024 at 11:00 at Albert J. Yvonne G. Coffman - March 24, 1958 - January 15, 2024

Obituary Preview: Yvonne Gardy Coffman, 65, passed away on January 15, 2024 after a fearless battle against lung cancer. She passed peacefully in her sleep with her husband and daughter by her side. She was born in Berlin, Germany on March 24, 1958 and came to America when she was just a toddler.
She graduated from Granby High School, Class of 1976. She worked various jobs in multiple fields until she found her home away from home at Doumar’s Cone and Barbecue in Norfolk, Virginia where she was a familiar and friendly face for the past 34 years.
In her spare time, Yvonne enjoyed beachcombing and Jeeping the shores of Hatteras, diving the Caribbean, underwater photography, gardening, planning her annual infamous Halloween costumes, and spending time with her loved ones.
Yvonne is survived by her amazing husband, Karl Coffman, whom they shared 36 wonderful and adventurous years together, her phenomenal daughter, Raven Lukens, her unreserved son-in-law, Alan Lukens Jr., and her most favorite part of her life, her grandchildren, Frank Lukens III, and Reagann Lukens. She also leaves behind extended family Carol Coffman, Courtney (Catherine) Coffman, Christie (Shane) Daniels, Donna (Boyd) Gaines, Mike (Laura) Campbell, and a handful of nieces and nephews.
There will be a celebration of life at Zino’s/Stinger’s at 850 Old George Washington Hwy N, Chesapeake, VA 23323 this Friday, January 19th, 2024 at 5pm for Happy Hour.

Betty was a caring individual who dedicated herself to taking care of those around her, whether they were family, friends, or even strangers in need. She had a deep love for animals, especially her cherished cats, and found joy in feeding birds and other critters that visited her yard.
Betty is survived by her daughter Lisa Culpepper Coleman, son-in-law Joey Coleman, grandsons Ethan Coleman and Kyle Coleman, granddaughter Katie Beggs, daughter Heather Culpepper, daughter Meghan Culpepper, eleven brothers and sisters, many nieces and nephews, as well as her beloved kitties Lil Boots, Fidget, and Indy. She was preceded in death by her father Edward Bennett, mother Dorothy Bennett, and husband Marvin (M.V.) Culpepper Jr.

Danielle grew up in Chesapeake, a graduate of Deep Creek High School, and was studying to become a Radiological Technician while working at Sinclair Communications as a Promotions Assistant she enjoyed life to the fullest. She enjoyed her Cat Binx, and her love of Elephants. Danielle will be dearly missed. Her smile and her laugh were infectious and her spirits were always bright. She loved everyone and was always so thankful for anyone and everyone that wanted to step forward and help her in any way they could. No one was a stranger to Danielle. We find peace in knowing she is no longer in pain.
Danielle was predeceased by her sister Kristina.

Born in Portsmouth, Virginia, she grew up in Brentwood in Chesapeake. She is the daughter of the late Ralph Stallings and Mae Stallings. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of over 58 years, Walton R. Hood; and her beloved son, Warren R. Hood.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Nicole and Ricardo Jones, and granddaughters, Reilly and Eryn.
She is also survived by her “sidekick” Gizmo, her dutiful pug.
Linda was a 1960 graduate of Cradock High School and a Chowan College alumni. She went onto a career in accounting where she worked at Bob Ewell Tire Service for many, many years.
Linda was an integral member of Fairview Heights Baptist Church, where her mother had been a founding member. She dedicated her life to her faith and friends. She played a vital role in the “prayer chain” and in the lives of her favorite ladies: Dorothy, Barbara, Ann, Emma, Christine, Linda, Carolyn, Betsie and Pastor Danny (as well as so many others.) They knew her well and will miss her most.
The family will receive friends at a visitation and memorial service held at Snellings Funeral Home on 1144 George Washington Hwy., North, on Wednesday. October 4, 2023 at 10:00 am.
In lieu of floral arrangements memorial donations can be made to Fairview Heights Baptist Church or to Meals on Wheels of Chesapeake. John O. Meekins, Jr. - January 19, 1935 - August 27, 2023

Born in 1935 to John Oscar Meekins Sr. and Zenova Perry Meekins, in the town of Collington, Kill Devil Hills, NC, John developed his passion for swimming, fishing, crabbing, and boating.
After his 1952 high school graduation, John enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. During his first assignment in Cape May, New Jersey, John met and married the love of his life, Helen Dennis. John and “Kitty” would be blessed with one another for 55 loving years.
John proudly served his country in the USCG and retired after 21 years; achieving the rank of Warrant Officer 4. Settling in Chesapeake, VA, John worked for the Portsmouth Gas Company until his ultimate retirement in 2001. He loved his job, and those he worked with, and strove for and achieved excellence.
John was predeceased by wife Kitty and parents John and Zenova. Surviving are his daughter, Debra Meekins Ridenour; sons John O. Meekins III and wife Kim, and Michael Robert Meekins; three grandchildren Michele Cook Franco and wife Lorena, Heather Meekins Boggs and husband Kenny, and Courtney Michelle Meekins; great granddaughters Brysennia, Poppy, and Waverly.
A private family ceremony to remember John Meekins will be held with military honors. Papa Johnny, the very definition of a good man, was heard to say, “I love my family, I had a great life, and would not change a thing.”

Obituary Preview: Helen Agnes (Light) Grathwohl, 81, of Chesapeake, VA, gained her angel wings on July 14, 2023. She passed away peacefully, at home, surrounded by family.
A native of Lavelle, PA, she married her first husband, Bennie L. Light (deceased) in 1961. They had two children, Thomas E. Light (deceased) and Helen A. Evans. She remarried Paul Grathwohl (deceased) in 1994.
Helen was an active member of Portsmouth Temple #4 Pythian Sisters for many years. After becoming a laryngectomee in 2002, she joined the Tidewater Lost Chords Club, later serving as club president. Throughout her time with the Lost Chords Club, she visited countless other prospective laryngectomees and their families. Helen would honestly and openly discuss with them what they were facing and was a shining example of just how full life could be post-surgery. She also joined the International Association of Laryngectomees (IAL), serving as their president for four years, advocating for laryngectomees and their families.
She cherished her family, and often said that they were her world. Helen was a kind and generous lady that treated everyone like they were part of the family regardless of how long she’d known them. She leaves behind a hole in the hearts of all who were lucky enough to know her.
She was predeceased by her parents Thomas and Agnes Madden and brother Jim Madden.
She is survived by her daughter, Helen and husband William (Bill); brothers George (Peggy) and Joseph (Gail); grandchildren Thomas (April), Amanda, and William (Billy); great grandson, Liam, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
A memorial visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8p.m. on Friday, July 21, at Snellings Funeral Home, George Washington Highway Chapel. The funeral will be conducted at 11a.m., Monday, July 24, by Father Romeo Jazmin at Holy Angels Catholic Church, 34 Afton Pkwy, Portsmouth, VA 23702, with internment to follow at Chesapeake Memorial Gardens.

He was a well-respected business owner and a concrete construction expert. He was a legendary storyteller, puzzle extraordinaire and stock market master. Bill loved his family, sharing a beer with friends, NASCAR racing, watching Westerns, and being near the water. Bill was widely known for his excellent barbeque sauce recipe and enjoyed making it for special occasions. Bill was always looking for a good time and believed in living life to the fullest.
Bill was preceded in death by his children, David W. Myatt, Ray Myatt and Patricia Kirby as well as his grandson, David K. Myatt.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Kathy; his children, Caroline Myatt Cassidy, Scott Collins and son-in-law, Mike Cassidy; Sister-in-law, Diana Brown; Brother-in-law, Ray Alexander; Brother-in-law, Bruce Boley and sister-in-law, Jodi Boley; Grandchildren, Kristin Parkhurst, Michael Parkhurst, Roger Kirby, Michael Kirby, Rachel Myatt, Aaron Kirby, Eleni Kirby, Janna Kirby and Jeana Kirby; Nieces and nephews, Richard Brown, Emily Brown, Ian Boley, Kimberly Miller and JC Miller; And 11 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Snellings Funeral Home on Saturday, July 8th at 3pm with a reception to follow.

Born in Poughkeepsie, NY on February 8, 1943, he was a native of Beacon, NY, until he made Virginia his home in 1995. The US Marine Corp called his name and he served proudly from 1960-1964. He married his love, Anne Stecher, in 1965, and recently celebrated 57 years on August 22nd last year. He was a man of many talents and a mechanically gifted soul. Frank could be found volunteering on the baseball fields for Little League, church functions in both his hometown and here in Norfolk, and with the youth of TDIF. Frank’s mission in life was to make everyone smile, one joke at a time. Sometimes it was the same joke over and over. Those that know will get it, the others will have to “ketchup”.
Frank is predeceased by his mother Lida, four sisters and one great granddaughter.
He is survived by his wife, Anne; four children, Trudy Miller (William), Frank, Tammy Marsteller (Micah) and Adam (Venetzia); 12 grandchildren; and 6 great grandchildren.
A celebration of Life will be held on August 12, 2023 at 11:00am at Miles Memorial UMC, 9450 Granby St., Norfolk, VA with a reception to follow. He leaves a legacy of laughter and helping. Lois was born on October 23, 1931 in Ada, Ohio to the late Marian and Ralph Harris. After graduating from high school, her family relocated to Virginia. While attending school in Virginia, she met her husband, Julian Lee (Buck) Turney and they married in October 1950.
Lois was employed for many years as a Comptroller with the US Federal Civil Service. She always had an insatiable need to learn. Upon her retirement, she dedicated much of her spare time to researching her family history and the Turney family history. Her passion for genealogy inspired her and Buck to begin traveling to continue her research. She loved traveling to new cities, visiting libraries, and adding new family information to her collection of research. She was also an avid reader. She enjoyed reading biographies and watching documentaries and classic movies. She took pride in her home and loved gardening and working in her yard.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter-in-law, Beth P. Turney; grandson, Julian Travis Turney and his wife Shannon; great-grandchildren; Julia Turney and Kendra Turney; a new great-great-granddaughter, Reighlynn, whom she hadn’t met yet; and her loyal kitty companion, Snookie, whom she loved dearly.
She is preceded in death by her husband Julian Lee (Buck) Turney; son Julian Scott Turney; and brothers Paul Harris and Lowell Harris.
Lois loved gathering with family during the holidays, for birthdays and other special occasions. She enjoyed seeing her great grandchildren and she would have been so excited that her family has grown with the birth of her new great-great-granddaughter.
A graveside service will be held 11:00 am, Monday, July 3, 2023 at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, 4569 Shoulders Hill Rd, Suffolk, VA 23435. Snellings Funeral Home, George Washington Highway, is assisting the family.

Growing up, Scott was actively involved in Boy Scouts and became an Eagle Scout at a young age. After high school he joined the Naval Air Reserves. He worked in the trucking industry as a truck driver for many years until his retirement. Anyone who knew him would tell you he was a hard worker and a good provider for his family.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and they were his world. He was a wonderful and loving husband, an encouraging father and the best PawPaw to his grandchildren. He always wanted everyone to be “happy go lucky.” He made sure his time spent with his grandchildren was always full of fun and laughter. He believed fun created good memories. He loved the outdoors and had a passion for camping and gardening. He also loved the beach and enjoyed spending time with his family in Myrtle Beach.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 49 years, Beth P. Turney; son, Julian Travis Turney and his wife Shannon; grandchildren; Julia Turney and Kendra Turney; and his mother, Lois Turney.
He is preceded in death by his father, Julian Lee (Buck) Turney.
Scott was a very kind and loving person and was always willing to help others. He always saw the good in people and will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Jesus Christ was the source of strength and peace in her life. Donna was born in Portsmouth, VA and lived in Chesapeake until her passing. She was 69 years old.
Donna graduated from Deep Creek High School as an Honor student. After graduation, she entered the Sentara School of Electrophysiology and became a Registered EEG Technician. She was a member of the American Board of Registered EEG Technicians. After graduating, she worked as an EEG Technician at the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters. She retired after 40 years of loyal service.
Donna retired because she found out she was going to be a Grandmother. She was excited to be an active part of her grandchildren’s lives and their babysitter. Those years were some of the happiest years of her and her husband, Tony’s lives. She was so happy and proud of her grandchildren. Donna was so thankful that God gave her the opportunity to be a mother and grandmother.
Her loving and devoted husband, Tony Adams, survives Donna. They were married nearly 49 years. They first met in junior high school, eventually fell in love, and were a part of each other’s lives for 55 years. Donna is also survived by her two children, Leah Kennedy and husband Josh of Chesapeake, Nathan Adams and his wife Melissa of Kingsland, Georgia. She had 6 precious grandchildren, Charlie and Lydia Kennedy; Brantley, Preston, Averly and Elliot Adams.
In addition, Donna leaves behind her loving mother, Peggy Abee. Three siblings, Cookie and husband Dennis Jones of Cornelius, NC; Taffy and husband Robbie Bain of Moyock, NC.. A brother Danny Abee of Chesapeake, VA. A nephew, Don Hartung, his daughter Angela Hartung, and son Tommy Hartung. Sister in law Cindee and husband Rikki of Kill Devil Hills,NC. Three nieces, Tehra, Lindsey (Brook), and Leanne. Brother in law Kenny Adams and his son Kyle of Locust Grove, VA. Brother in law Glenn Adams and daughter Crystal of FL.
Donna was predeceased by her father, Daniel Keith Abee Sr. and her grandparents Frank and Lillian Mooney.
Donna will be greatly missed. Donna was Tony’s source of inspiration and their family’s strength.
A memorial service will be held, Saturday, April 1, 2023 at Temple Baptist Church, 1322 George Washington Hwy N., Chesapeake, VA 23323. The visitation will be at 12:00 pm followed by the memorial service at 1:00 pm. Pastor Watson Morgan officiating. Internment will immediately follow the memorial service at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 3920 Airline Blvd., Chesapeake, VA 23321.

Born on 10/2/31 in Vansant, Buchanan, Virginia to the late Grover Vandyke and May Childress Vandyke; he was a man of many talents. A lover of the outdoors, beekeeping, carpentry, gardening, God, and most of all, his family. He entered adulthood serving in the United States Air Force before settling in Chesapeake, Va. This is where he planted his roots with his loving wife and started a family. He then started his career at Hoechst Celanese where he worked for over 40 years without taking a single day off in his time there. He spent his whole life serving the Lord in all he did. He was a long time member of Deep Creek Baptist Church of Chesapeake, Va and a missionary for Builders For Christ up until he could no longer travel independently.
He will be missed immensely, and everyone he knew will say he truly was a one of a kind and would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife Margie Vandyke. Parents, Grover Vandyke and May Childress Vandyke, siblings Ida, George, Guy, Lucy, Perry, Claude and Granvil (Dan) Vandyke.
Left to cherish his memory is his son, Joseph Vandyke, Sr of Suffolk Virginia. His two grand-children, Joseph Vandyke, Jr. of Corapeake, Nc and Chelsea Vandyke of Portsmouth, Va. Four great grandsons- Elijah, Cooper, Keller and Tucker, and sister Mary Cook of Grundy, Va. as well as a few other relatives and many friends in the Deep Creek Baptist Church and Builders For Christ community.
The family would like to thank the staff at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center as well as the hospice staff with Sentara Hospice for all of the love, comfort, support and compassion given in this very difficult time.
