Keith Gregory Ratcliff - August 09, 1941 - May 03, 2024

Departed: 05/03/2024 (Billings)
Obituary Preview: Keith Gregory Ratcliff passed away surrounded by loved ones in the early hours of May 3, 2024 - prepared at last to be reunited with his beloved wife of 52 years, Sandee.
Born in Des Moines, IA on August 9, 1941 to Orville and Edith (Fisher) Ratcliff, Keith spent his years living his life to the fullest. Keith met Sandra Louise Zajicek in 1963, and they were married later that same year. The couple welcomed their only child Bryan Keith into the world on May 25, 1966. In 1973, their love of The Main Boulder river drainage outside of Big Timber drew them from Iowa to Montana. The family and close friends enjoyed many years of adventures in this area, and that will ultimately be where both Keith and Sandee are laid to rest.
Keith had a mindset of excellence in everything he did. In the 1980s, Bryan introduced Keith to bodybuilding, and Keith maintained his elite conditioning right up until he fell ill in early 2024. In the 1990s he pushed his passion for motorcycles to the limit, becoming a four-time AMA National Champion off-road racer, riding in the age class below him. He loved solo hiking and would complete extreme hikes including 40 miles over 4 mountain passes in one day. He also ran marathons and ultra-marathons and competed in professional walleye tournaments. He loved to mountain bike, finally consenting in the 2020s to use an e-bike as an “equalizer” to continue keeping up with his son Bryan. He also hunted and loved archery.
He was an honest, hard-working man who set the highest standards throughout his life. As a Real Estate Appraiser for over 30 years, people often joked “It was Keith’s way or the highway!” He was so confident in his work, he was never wrong… LOL! Keith was proud to have Bryan join AK Ratcliff Real Estate Appraisal Company in 1992, and they worked together for many years. Keith and Sandee retired early in order to see the country in their RV before Sandee’s MS kept them closer to home.
He took the time to teach Bryan skills such as carpentry, welding, mechanics and an unmatched work ethic. He enjoyed the time he spent with his grandchildren Maranda and Parker, and had the joy of meeting his first great-grandchild Wrenley in February 2024. He loved his neighbors and never hesitated to help them or entertain them with his sense of humor.
Keith was preceded in death by the love of his life Sandee, as well as his parents. He is survived by his son, Bryan (Lynn) Ratcliff, grandchildren Maranda (Travis) Hough and Parker Ratcliff. His brother Dwight Ratcliff and great-granddaughter Wrenley Hough also survive him. In his last few months, Keith found great comfort in the advocacy that Lynn Ratcliff (daughter-in-law) provided in connecting him with as many specialists and doctors that worked to find an answer and cure for his mysterious and unanswered illness. In his final hours, he made the decision to say “YES” to Jesus. We find peace that he finally found his healing in heaven… Amen!
A celebration of life for Keith will be held on Friday, May 17th at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Billings at 11 AM.

Jeralee Susan Heiken - November 15, 1955 - April 28, 2024

Departed: 04/28/2024 (Billings)
Obituary Preview: Jeralee Susan Heiken went to the Lord on Sunday, April 28th after a long fought bottle with Scleroderma. She was born November 15, 1955 to Orville and Lucille Helmey of Lavina, Montana. Jeralee was no stranger to hard work. Starting at a young age, she and her sisters, Orlenna (Loughrey) and Sariann (Meredith) worked alongside her mom at the Lavina Café. She met the love of her life, Joe Heiken, at her freshman dance and began an almost 50 year legacy with him by her side. Joe and Jeralee were married on July 28, 1974 in Lavina at the Adams Hotel.
Jeralee spent her days feeding the stock cattle with a pitchfork and flatbed trailer as Joe handled the feedlot, all while ensuring her 3 boys were fed, loved and taken care of. No one worked harder than Jeralee. Even after her sons were old enough to take over the day-to-day ranch duties and had families of their own, she kept right on working – more often by watching her grandkids – either by babysitting, greeting them off the school bus, or sitting with them in the pickup while still working cows. She loved her family above all else, and enjoyed spending time in her garden in the summer, sitting with a good book by her fire in the winter, or baking peach pies and donuts for her friends and family. She is survived by her husband, Joe, and their sons and families: John (Kendra), Emma and Jordan Heiken; Brian (Janna), Rylan, Keara, Nolan and Tillie Heiken; Ben (Lynsey), Rhett and Cole Heiken; her sisters: Orlenna and her daughter Jennifer, and Sariann (Keith), and their children Kendra (David) Lile and Dylan Meredith; as well as numerous cousins, aunts and uncles. She enjoyed visits by her other children and grandchildren throughout her
time in Red Lodge.
After a severe fall, she eventually was ready for a greater level of care and moved into St. John’s United, where she stayed until her passing. She was well cared for there, and she lovingly referred to it as her “house.” She had frequent visits by her children and grandchildren and the family dogs. Lydia Marie Maier - April 01, 1918 - April 04, 2024

Departed: 04/04/2024 (Billings)
Obituary Preview: It is with deep reverence and gratitude that we bid farewell to Lydia Maier, a devoted servant of the Lord, who completed her earthly journey at the remarkable age of 106 on April 4, 2024, three days after her 106th Birthday. She lived independently in her own home until age 103. For over a century she lived each day with a profound sense of purpose, joyfully praising the Lord and sharing his message of love and redemption with all whom she encountered. She was baptized at the age of 103 in her bathtub. In her last year, her favorite saying was “Peace, Love & Joy!”
Lydia was born on April 1st, 1918, in a sod house in Watkins, Montana where she learned the value of hard work and perseverance from a young age. Lydia spoke German until she went to school. She learned English quickly when the teacher punished her and her siblings for speaking German. At the tender age of 10, Lydia experienced the loss of her mother and bravely assumed the responsibilities of running the household for her father and three brothers until her father remarried a few years later to a woman with 4 children.
In 1939, Lydia found love at a church social when she met Harold Maier, the love of her life. They shared 47 years of marriage together. Harold was a farmer and together they raised cattle, pigs, chickens and crops, mainly wheat. Life on the farm was challenging without electricity, indoor plumbing or modern conveniences. They relied on traditional methods of farming, pumping water from the well, using an outhouse and cooking on a wood or coal heated stove. Despite the hardships, Lydia and Harold persevered, creating a loving home for their three daughters: Myrna, Mary Patricia (Patti), and Marleen.
In October of 1985, Lydia and Harold moved to Billings when Harold’s health declined. She remained active in the Faith Evangelical church and a senior group called Faith Builders, where she found community and a place to praise the lord.
Lydia is survived by her daughter, Myrna (husband Layne); daughter Marleen; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Harold; daughter Patti; granddaughter Robin; her son-in-laws Frank Golden & Ed Shumaker; her parents, and all her siblings.
Lydia’s prayer request for her family is that each one in her family walk with the Lord Jesus in a personal way.
Her legacy of faithfulness, resilience, and unwavering devotion to the Lord will forever inspire and uplift those who were blessed to know her. Lydia’s legacy of strength, love and resilience will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. May she rest in eternal peace, reunited with her loved ones in the embrace of her Heavenly Father.

Curtis Patrick Gallagher - July 29, 1957 - February 25, 2024

Departed: 02/25/2024 (Billings)
Obituary Preview: Curtis Patrick Gallagher (Pat) was born to Joseph and Thelma Gallagher in Miles City, MT on July 29, 1957.
His family moved to Billings, MT when he was a toddler along with his brother Gary. Pat and Gary talked at least weekly and undoubtedly about guns and life.
Pat grew up in Billings with friends, John Keenan, Mark Haun and Jeff Spieler. Pat first started camping and hiking in the Beartooth Mountains and soon the mountains became a part of him.
Going hunting each fall was not a question – it was simply a fact. The three “Amigos” Pat, Doug Taggart, and Kelly Patten created a “brotherly” bond through their lives.
His daughter, Erin was the light of his life but that didn’t cloud the importance for him to instill strong values, hard work ethics, and strength of character as she grew-up. Erin married Kevin Sparrow who gives her a very strong shoulder and a voice of reason, which gave Pat much comfort knowing she is happy and has someone to share her life with.
24 years ago Pat met his best friend and beloved wife Louise with her 4 children, Charla (Jeff Moffitt), Kyle Terry (Charla), Crista (Brandon Morris) and Grant Terry (Amber).
Although not a cuddly Grandpa “Grandpa Pat” was proud of and tolerated all 22 of his grandchildren: Madysen, Selleck, Mateila, Amanda, Braydon, Lindsey, Sid, Gavin, Makenzi, JV, Zane, Jersey, Katie, Jake, Aurora, Hank, Dylan, Emily, Colter, Adysen, Oliver and August.
The largest part of Pat’s working career was 41 years with T&E. Pat was hardworking and reliable – some would say a little rigid. One of the rules he lived by was “If you are not at least 15 minutes early you are LATE”.
Pat’s legacy is his family, but his passion was his home. Over the years he and Louise made their house a beautiful home with landscaped spaces to enjoy. At the end of a workday, he would have a beer in one hand, a cigarette on his lip and the garden hose in the other hand watering trees.
Pat has been clearing, organizing and tiding-up in every way this past year, getting ready to go home. Everything was in its’ place and he peacefully went to rest high on that mountain among the trees at 4:44 pm on February 25, 2024. ~Always Loved and Remembered~

Brian Edward Schwab - January 14, 1964 - January 16, 2024

Departed: 01/16/2024 (Billings)
Obituary Preview: Brian Edward Schwab returned to his Heavenly home on January 16th, 2024. He passed away after fighting terminal lung cancer. Brian was born on January 14, 1964 to Arnold Reno Schwab and Patricia Lou Strand in Billings, MT. He spent his early years in south central Montana and northern Wyoming. He loved spending time out on the family farm with his Grandma and Grandpa Strand and this is where he discovered a love of farming that he has passed on to one of his sons.
He was a hard worker and has been a trucker since he was 15. Anyone who knew him knew that this was his passion. His love of trucking started at a very young age when his uncle Tom Schwab took him in his truck and let Brian drive. This is a passion he has passed to another one of his sons. However, he also owned his own companies and worked on drilling rigs throughout his career. He taught many others how to drive truck and in doing so taught them how to provide for their own families. It was often joked that he should open Brian Schwab’s School of Trucking.
He married the love of his life Donna Schwab on November 17th, 1989. They then had four children: Ashley, Joey, Jimmy, and Jacque. However, Brian and Donna divorced and in doing this he was able to welcome another son Shawn, and his step-daughter Charley. Thankfully Donna and Brian were reunited and married again on July 14th, 2023. He was known for his booming voice, generosity, and work ethic. He loved to fish and was a die-hard Denver Broncos fan, and you could always strike up a conversation about football. However, his favorite team will always be the Wibaux Longhorns, especially when two of his sons were on that team.
His favorite thing was to be a grandpa. He loved every single one of his 13 grandchildren. The family was his pride and joy and ultimate passion. He loved to brag about his kids and grandkids. He is an amazing brother, father, grandfather and friend. He will be dearly loved and missed by all who knew him.
He is preceded in death by his mother Patricia Lou Strand, his brother Mike Schwab, several aunts and uncles, and Grandparents on both his Schwab and Strand sides.
He is survived by his wife Donna Schwab, and his 6 children: Ashley (Travis) Barchenger of Laurel and Grandchildren Addyson, Braelyn, Camden, and Declan, Brian Joseph (Michelle) Schwab of Lincoln and Grandchildren McKenna and Caleb, Shawn Barnes of Lincoln, James (Tayler) Schwab of Beach and Grandchildren Kaylea, Hadley, and Coen, Jacquelyn (Travis) Lequeux of Beach and Grandchildren Avalon, Chloe, and Stella, and step-daughter Charley (Levi) Anderson-Downard of Golva, ND and Grandson Ross. Also survived by his father Arnold Schwab and Gladys Schwab and his siblings Barry, Stewart, Don, Carrie, Eric, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Janice Handsaker - January 18, 1946 - January 12, 2024

Departed: 01/12/2024 (Billings)
Obituary Preview: Janice Handsaker was born January 18, 1946, in Yakima, WA to Walter and Genevieve Herman. She passed away on January 12, 2024, at home with her husband Larry and children near her side. After a successful seven-year fight with lung cancer, she passed as a result of esophageal cancer. She was truly a special person, loved dearly by her family and many close friends.
She was an extraordinary gardener, avid reader, collector of antiques, cook, baker and a true “homemaker.” Her cream pies were a specialty enjoyed by many. Her cozy, inviting home and her splendid flower garden have always shown how amazing she was.
Janice loved her family, and oh how they loved her back – her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of her life. She loved her dear friends, and all those she met at Bible study.
She belonged to the American Lutheran Church and was an employee of Smith’s Chapel West for 18 years. She also worked at Walden Books and was a partner alongside her husband at Morgan’s Market, which was named after her first granddaughter. There she worked beside her daughter Jennifer, creating many delicious foods, and with her son Joshua, the master baker. Her daughter Heidi was also an inspiration to Janice through her special prayers and devotions.
Janice’s granddaughters Karli and Elli were fortunate to be influenced by their Nana as well as their mother Jennifer, in helping them to become outstanding young women spouses, bakers, cooks, and gardeners. Her grandson Peyton also had Nana’s love to help him become the kind and bright young man he is.
Janice is survived by husband and greatest admirer Larry, son Josh of Billings, daughter Jennifer (Scott Hanel) of Charleston, S.C., daughter Heidi of Billings, grand-daughters Karli (Jerred) of Billings, Elli Funyak (Zach) of Billings, grandson Peyton of Billings and great-grandchildren Hudson and Nora, her brightest lights. She is also survived by her sisters, Debi (KC) and Cathy, brothers-in-law Bill and David Handsaker of Bozeman and sister-in-law Nancy Willaims (Alan) of Bozeman. As well as several nieces and nephews.
Rather than a funeral service, Janice asked for a simple celebration of life with her family and close friends in her flower garden. This will be celebrated in the Spring, when her many wonderful roses and flowers will be in full splendor. Reminiscent of her beauty, for all to take in.
She also requested that instead of flowers given in her memory, donations be sent to Help for Homeless Pets (helpforhomelesspets.org) or the Yellowstone Animal Shelter (yvas.org).

Dorothy Lois Skinn - December 14, 1928 - January 09, 2024

Departed: 01/09/2024 (Billings)
Obituary Preview: Dorothy Lois (Fraser) Skinn was born on December 14, 1928 in Westhope, North Dakota, to John and Irene (Nine) Fraser. In this small farming town, Dorothy was imbued with kindness, a propensity toward hard work, generosity and a profound loving devotion to her parents, siblings and community.
Living a vibrant youth, she was crowned the Carnival Queen in her junior year of high school and cooked many a sloppy joe with her sister Katherine to sell at local dances. On November 18, 1949, she married Duane Skinn and together they had five children before venturing off to settle in Montana.
A natural-born entrepreneur, Dorothy loved being industrious. Being constantly at work was her canvas for creating meaningful relationships and spending time with her family and friends. She earned money by ironing clothing for people in the community, delivering the crispest laundry with her high standards of cleanliness and precision. She always had homemade treats ready (housed in recycled cookie tins atop her washer and dryer) for anyone who dropped in—neighbors, ironing customers, long-time friends or family. A fan favorite were her buns and the cinnamon rolls that came out in a way only she knew how to do.
Dorothy was an avid bowler, playing in local bowling leagues in Miles City and Billings. Occasionally, she'd enlist her children to tag along and keep score for her and her teammates. When her children started playing sports of their own, she was there cheering them on, never missing a game.
After the work was done, the cleaning wasn't over. Sitting down to a game of cards (one Dorothy likely taught you), her keen sense of strategy could clean competitors out, even in the last few months of her life. Dorothy could also bring craft creations to life and loved to tell stories to her grandchildren of growing up on the farm. She was determined to live life to the fullest whether that be working, making delicious food, digging into the latest periodicals and newspapers to try out new recipes and home remedies, or spending time with family and neighbors.
Dorothy is survived by her children and grandchildren, sons Brian and wife Teri of Billings and daughter Angie Madriz and husband Julio of Billings, MT, Craig and wife Erlene of Lehi, UT and daughters Danielle Skinn and Mallory Maude and husband Chip of Utah, and Marty and partner Dana of Billings, MT; daughters Becky Ceniceros and husband Jose of Billings, MT and Darcy Miller and husband Greg and daughter Tatum Miller of Billings, MT; and her brother Don Fraser and wife Reneé of Westhope, ND. She is preceded in death by her husband Duane; four siblings, Katherine, Lucille, Jerald, and Ruth, and grandson (son of Brian), Justin.
Funeral services, celebration of life, and reception will take place on January 15, 2024, at 11:30 am in Smith's West Funeral Chapel, 304 34th St. W, Billings, MT. Internment will be at Mount View Cemetery following the reception.

Glen Francis Pike - September 02, 1944 - October 01, 2023

Departed: 10/01/2023 (Billings)
Obituary Preview: On October 1, 2023, Glen Francis Pike, age 79, of Billings Montana was called to his heavenly home with God. Glen was born September 2nd, 1944, in Austin
Minnesota, the son of Herald R Pike and Edith Edna (Cox) Pike, the twelfth of 13 children. He died with his loving wife and soul mate, Marlene (Wuertz) Pike by his side.
Glen was happy with his relationship with God and his salvation. He spent his life active in multiple religious organizations. He was a charter member of two new mission congregations and served the Lord as an officer or director in 5 other congregations.
Glen spent his youth in Austin MN, growing up on Hope Street playing with many of his siblings and neighborhood kids. He occasionally visited the Austin Country Club to hunt for lost golf balls. In 6th grade his life changed when the golf course pro offered him a job washing clubs for .25 cents an hour. He worked from April 1st to November 1st every year until he was 20. The country club pros not only gave him the job but gave him clubs and lessons. This allowed him not only to work his way into school golf teams but helped him finding a life-long sport.
Glen attended Austin High School where he played for the golf team and was a member of conference championship teams. At graduation, he received a $500 scholarship to Austin Jr College. When asked what he would do with his life he answered “Golf”. Since he didn’t have a major figured out, his college advisor suggested he follow after his mother and add is favorite subject. Thus, he was enrolled in classes to become a history teacher. He did well in his classes, was a member of Phi Beta Kappa honor society and played in two National Junior College Golf Championships, finishing 14th in his sophomore year.
After graduating from Junior College, Glen attended the University of Minnesota, spending two quarters as a history major. Visiting home, the Austin Country Club management suggested he go into accounting. “They could never find enough good accountants.” However, dropping down to get the business classes changed his exemption from the draft.
In Sept 1965, Glen enlisted in the US Army. He qualified for officer’s candidate school. Following basic training, infantry training, and officer training at Fort Still in Oklahoma, Glen graduated 2nd Lieutenant Artillery. He received Vietnam orders for 1st of the 40th Artillery unit attached the 12th Marines. Glen spent a year in Vietnam. In April 1969, Glen was wounded in the leg and spent 30 days in hospital before returning to unit. He returned from Vietnam decorated with the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, Army Accommodations and several letters of accommodation.
Once back home, Glen returned to accounting and graduated from Mankato State University. His career started at Arthur Anderson (the largest accounting firm in the world at the time). He spent 8 years in public accounting and as a tax and audit manager. Leaving public accounting due to the stress and long hours, he moved to St. Cloud Minnesota where he joined Capital Investors, a national real estate investment company.
Glen took advantage of the extra time and the natural beauty of Minnesota. He enjoyed camping and fishing with his kids. He also passed along his love golf to his kids, teaching them the game. Glen kept golfing for the remainder of his life, winning multiple club championships, other tournaments and achieved five hole-in-ones, including one on a par four.
In 1990 Glen moved to Billings, MT to join his brother running a chain of the Western Drug Stores. In Billings, Glen met his soul mate Marlene. They married in 1996 in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. She has become the light of his life and the center of his world. The move to Montana lead to Glen driving back to Minnesota every 6-8 weeks to see his children. He traveled back for three-day weekends, holidays, special events and special requests for twenty years.
Glen found fun and joy in being a local Optimist International member for many years. Glen introduced the Billings Optimist clubs to the International Junior Golf Championships, creating opportunities for local youth to participate in golf at a national level. Glen also spent many hours re-gripping clubs, housing junior golfers for the Optimist Jr. Golf tournaments, coordinating & running Junior Golf tournaments & ball shoots, and giving golf lessons to 100’s of kids at the Boys and Girls club of Billings, Montana. All this to instill the love of golf in young people.
All of his career, Glen ran his own small tax practice. After selling the Western Drug Stores, he continued to stay in Billings and run his accounting and tax business until shortly before his death. Glen worked long hours and put extra effort into all he did. He had excellent technical and managerial skills and always stood up for what was right with courage. He was a lifetime member of American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Minnesota State Society of CPAs and Montana State Society of CPAs.
Glen is survived by his wife Marlene, and four children; Janel (Kevin) Olson, Byron (Michelle) Pike, Court Cady and Brice (Brandy) Cady; 8 grandchildren, Amanda Olson, Erik Olson, Madison Pike, Aubrey Pike, Cassie Cady, Crysta Cady, Brendon (Ashley) Cady and Brady Cady; and five of his siblings.
