Marie Gardner - July 28, 1957 - June 25, 2020

Departed: 06/25/2020 (Sherwood)
Obituary Preview: Edna Marie Gardner, 62, passed away on June 25, 2020 after a long battle with cancer. She is survived by her beloved husband of 42 years, Stephen; her two daughters Melissa Winfrey (Cameron) of Cary, North Carolina and Michelle Thomas (Shawn) of Bryant, Arkansas; and four grandchildren, Lila, Sam, Emmett, and Jax. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on June 30, 2020 at Smith Sherwood Funeral Home.
Marie was born in Kansas City, Missouri on July 28, 1957 to the late Homer and Frances Sargent.  After meeting through a mutual acquaintance, she married Steve on October 15, 1977 and immediately took on the role of an Air Force wife. She and Steve began their life together in Florida but were eventually stationed at Little Rock Air Force Base where they lived for the bulk of Steve’s military career. It was there they formed lifelong friendships, friends who along with her family were by her side in her final days.
Marie took great joy in being a full time mother but as her girls grew older, she reentered the workforce, working for the state of Arkansas as a secretary for the Department of Community Punishment and then Arkansas Probation and Parole. Upon Steve’s retirement from military service, they settled in Sherwood.
For many years, Marie and Steve were members of Chapel Hill Baptist Church in Jacksonville where they both enjoyed singing in the choir. Losing her singing voice was something that Marie lamented the most about cancer. They later became members of Pulaski Heights Baptist Church in Little Rock.
Marie loved to read and sew. She was a loving wife. She is remembered by her daughters as the most devoted of mothers, someone they could lean on and laugh with. In her later years, Marie reveled in her role as a grandmother, spoiling her grandchildren whenever she could. She was a loyal friend, honest and generous with everyone she met.
First diagnosed with ovarian cancer at the age of 46 in 2004, Marie’s strong will made her determined to beat it. This same determination fueled her when the cancer subsequently reappeared in 2006, 2011, and 2017. Unfortunately, the disease took her far too early. Her beautiful spirit, her kind, loving nature, her laugh and her hugs will be missed by all who knew her.

John Thomas Dent - July 05, 1947 - June 15, 2020

Departed: 06/15/2020 (Sherwood)
Obituary Preview: John Thomas Dent, 72, of North Little Rock, Arkansas passed away peacefully on Monday, June 15, 2020, surrounded by family and music.
Born to Perry Gene Dent and Susie Bell Dent (née Deaver) on July 5, 1947, John attended Sylvan Hills High School before his acceptance to the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. As the country found itself drawn into conflict overseas, John made the decision to enlist in the Air Force, where he served as a Sergeant in Vietnam before returning home in 1972. He met his wife, Karol Ann, that same year while both were working at Dillard's department store in North Little Rock. Karol would find convincing excuses to visit John in his department, and the two were destined to quickly fall in love. They were married in Scottsdale, Arizona in 1976, while John was attending Graduate School earning his Master's Degree in International Management. He would go on to join the United States Postal Inspection Service in 1981, a career he would serve in passionately for the next two decades, while Karol pursued a career in Elementary Education. John was blessed with two sons, Joshua Logan in 1983 and Justin Lee in 1987, and was as dedicated to his role as a father as he was his duties to the Inspection Service. He went on to retire in 2004, earning numerous accolades during his 23 years of service, and would often return as an expert witness for court cases involving malfeasance such as price fixing and insider trading. He instilled this spirit of justice and ethics in his two sons, making sure they knew right from wrong, never once through anger but only by gentle explanation. After both boys graduated High School in Houston and moved on to start their own journeys in Austin, Texas, John and Karol returned to North Little Rock where they had first met to reunite with a loving group of family and friends.
His love of work and family was matched only by his love for music, a passion that was reawakened in his retirement years with newfound time to travel, collect records, or simply relax by his beloved turntable. John was an encyclopedia of musical knowledge, ranging from early Rock and Roll to Motown; 60's protest anthems, the Beatles, and what his sons would affectionately refer to as “80's Dad Rock.” The spare linen closets that once overflowed with baseball cards now found themselves bursting at the hinges with lovingly cataloged vinyl records. Whether through the gentle insistence of Karol, or John's own entrepreneurial spirit, he devoted his spare time to selling albums at local antique stores and flea markets, a task he would relish for the rest of his life.
|John was diagnosed with Lung Cancer in 2019 and began his rounds of chemotherapy with a staunchly positive attitude, constantly reassuring his family and enduring his trials with his signature brand of dark humor. There were ups and downs, good news and bad news, but John always managed to look on the bright side. He continued to travel as long as he was able, attending Razorback games, and attempting something that resembled dancing at George's Majestic Lounge, his favorite live music venue in Fayetteville. Sadly, John's cancer continued to spread despite his overwhelmingly positive attitude and dedication to his health and well-being.
During this difficult, frightening time, John made the decision to live out the remainder of his days at home with Karol. He spent them sitting on the porch with his cat Xerox, calling his sons to tell them the great deal he had gotten on a box of albums, and visiting with his family and friends every chance he got. He and Karol were supported dutifully by the congregation of Sylvan Hills United Methodist Church during such a trying time, and found great comfort in their wisdom and familial spirit.  As his time on Earth drew to a close, they gathered at his bedside to comfort him with song as he embarked on his final, greatest adventure. John always reassured us that he would one day be reunited with his loved ones in the Eternal Hereafter. He was a loving husband, a patient, caring father, and lifelong friend to many.

Violet Ann Browning - December 20, 1940 - June 08, 2020

Departed: 06/08/2020 (Sherwood)
Obituary Preview: Violet Ann Kirkbride Browning went home to glory on Monday, June 8, 2020.  She was born December 20, 1940 to the late John “Jack” Thomas Kirkbride and Violet Aileen Laine Kirkbride.  Violet is also predeceased by her beloved husband, William Lee Browning.
What can be said about a life well lived? Violet Ann Kirkbride was ushered into this world amidst humble beginnings in the town of Saulte Saint Marie, Ontario, Canada. She was born at home in a house now known as “The Old Stone House.” She, her parents and siblings ventured down to the lower 48 states, settled in Missouri and became US citizens eventually making their way to Bellingham, Washington, which is where they grew up and thrived.
Violet met her beloved husband, Bill, at the sweet age of 13. Bill was playing basketball with Violet’s brothers when a beautiful young girl rode up on a horse with two of her friends, things were never quite the same after that. The young couple managed to spend as much time together as possible while eating popcorn and watching programs on the recently invented television with Violet’s brothers and the rest of her family. Eventually Bill graduated high school and enlisted in the Air Force and headed off to boot camp. While there he realized that life without Violet was not something he wanted, he contacted Violet’s father, Jack, and asked for her hand in marriage to be conducted upon his return to Bellingham. He received Jack’s blessing and Violet accepted Bill’s proposal. The young couple was married on May 7, 1956. She was 15 and he was 18. Bill and Vi, as she was known, began their lives in the military immediately after the wedding as they headed off to Rantoul, Illinois on Chanute Air Force Base. They traveled light as their only possessions were their few clothes, a pot and an electric frying pan without the lid. The young couple created an amazing life for themselves, being together for 64 years and having three wonderful children, six grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren and one great, great grandson. Violet was courageous, compassionate, generous, smart, fun and most of all very loving. She was always willing to lend a helping hand to whomever was in need.
Since Violet was so young when she married, she was limited in her knowledge of the basics required to make a home for her and her husband. She was a self-taught cook, and enlisted the help of two friends who were “good ole southern girls from Louisiana” one which taught her to fry chicken the southern way. Oh man! did she learn that well! Violet was well known for her fried chicken! That was usually the meal most requested by her children and family. She quickly learned how to cook and bake and maintain a wonderful home.
Violet had many talents, which seemed to bloom as time went on. She was not only an amazing cook and baker, but she was a talented seamstress, dog groomer, swimming instructor and excelled at anything she attempted to achieve.
Vi could plan a meal for many types of events including family gatherings, weddings, church events, celebrations and holidays. She decorated wedding cakes, birthday cakes and baby shower cakes. Her Thanksgiving turkey and dressing and Easter hams were amazing, always requested and hard to duplicate. Hopefully someone was able to get her recipes! Chocolate chip cookies, pies, especially her chocolate, strawberry rhubarb and mince meat pies, were especially delicious and in high demand. It didn’t matter if her shelves appeared bare and her refrigerator was empty, Vi could always place a delicious meal on the table for her family.
Sewing was a talent Violet acquired out of necessity for her growing family. She taught herself how to sew with precision and skill. Ballet tutus, Barbie clothes, dance and majorette uniforms were all a part of the many items she created. During the early ‘70s men’s leisure suits were all the rage; so, she managed to whip one up in light blue for her husband. He was so proud to wear that suit! She had two daughters who needed her expert touch to create their many prom and homecoming dresses, which she managed to achieve beautifully, some are still hanging in her closet today. She and Bill enjoyed square dancing and traveling throughout the United States attending square dance conventions. She created the many square dance ensembles for both her and her husband and her daughter and son-in-law, Vickie and Van. Her granddaughters were the recipients of the many dresses created from taffeta and satin for special occasions such as Easter and Christmas. During the last few years Violet was able to use her sewing talents for the benefit of others. She connected with a group of ladies who met one Friday a month to make hats for cancer patients. The group is known as “Care Caps.” What a wonderful way to share a talent!
Violet enjoyed swimming. She became a Red Cross swimming instructor and earned her life saving certificate. Baseball and bowling were sports that Violet also enjoyed. Violet loved to bowl and joined a bowling league while stationed at the Little Rock Air Force Base, her bowling average was around 265.
Violet was a girl scout when she was a young girl in Bellingham and became involved in scouting with her children.
Violet was devoted to her children and was active in their upbringing in church. She and Bill were youth directors at the Base Chapel and Sylvan Hills United Methodist Church. They organized church camps and Violet was the life guard assigned to watch the campers. Violet and Bill were members of the Pairs and Spares Sunday School Class and active members in the United Methodist Church. Violet was an active member of the United Methodist Women’s Group. She loved to play the bells in the church bell choir. Violet was a Band Booster at Sylvan Hills Junior High and High School and frequently chaperoned on the band buss during football season. Violet was an active member and an officer in the NCO Wives Club on the base.
Violet groomed dogs for many years with her close friend, Billie Howard, at a grooming shop they shared together known as Pooch Groom Parlor. She continued grooming dogs after being transferred to South Dakota and upon returning to Arkansas, she opened her own shop. Overall, she groomed dogs for about 30 years.
Violet was very creative. She enjoyed making ceramics with her daughter, Nancy, and working with Bill creating and painting many items made from wood. Together they made quilt racks, reindeer, Pilgrim figurines and many other items.
Violet made friends easily she was always friendly and approachable and never met a stranger. She met someone at the book store and started a longtime friendship with her, even meeting her at their favorite Chinese food restaurant.
Violet’s life was full and rich. She loved traveling with lifelong friends such as, Pat and Royce Flynn, Evelyn and Keith Farnham. She enjoyed camping, swimming, fishing and water skiing with Gary and Billie Howard and her family.
Today we celebrate the life of Violet Ann Browning and cherish all of the memories we have of her life with us. We rest assured that Violet is with her Savior and her beloved husband, Bill. While we miss her greatly, we have peace knowing she is home.
Memorials may be made to the Sylvan Hills United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
Funeral service will be held at 10:45AM Monday, June 15 at Smith Sherwood Funeral Home (7700 Hwy 107). AR COVID-19 directives: Face coverings required. Maintain social distancing.

To this day I would still argue that he was the strongest man I knew. He taught me how to camp, fish, and love Jesus. The example he set for us of love, family, and leadership will be with me forever. We never once wondered about his love for us... we knew it was unconditional. He loved me and my brother fiercely, and loved our own children just as much, if not more. My life is better because he was in it, and the memories of my childhood and beyond with him will be with me forever”. Stephen wants to say:  “Granddad, I will miss you dearly.  You have inspired me more than you will ever know, and I am proud to be your bloodline.  You instilled in me the traits I wish to teach my children and grandchildren.  Traits like mutual respect, hard work, appreciating the simple things, a sense of humor, and showing your love through actions.  I also share your appreciation for desserts, and for that I thank you too!  This is the legacy you have created and I intend to continue for our family.  I love you and will miss you, I’m sure you’re enjoying heaven with MiMi sitting by the lake fishing”.

C.B. Thompson - October 26, 1930 - May 22, 2020

Departed: 05/22/2020 (Sherwood)
Obituary Preview: C. B. (Clyde Barner) Thompson, Jr. was born in a shack in the oil fields of southern Arkansas (Norphlet) but soon moved with his father (Clyde Barner Sr.), mother (Daisy Mae Furr Thompson) and sister (Virginia) to North Little Rock (Rose City area) where the family opened a small grocery store with gas pumps out front on the then gravel road that is now called Broadway Ave./Hwy70.  That store was added onto numerous times and eventually became known as C.B. Thompson’s Supermarket, a full service grocery store.  As a boy growing up through the lean times of the Great Depression, C.B. learned the value of hard work and the importance of valuing God, family and relationships above all other things.  After graduating from NLR High School in 1948, C.B. attended Central Baptist College which was located on the grounds of Camp Robinson at that time.  He transferred to the University of Arkansas to finish his degree and was less than a year from graduating when he was called to serve his country during the Korean War.  After enlisting in the Air Force, he spent most of the next three years in Washington State (Spokane and Neah Bay) running radar and playing basketball for his Air Force squadron team.  Upon finishing his military service, C.B. returned to North Little Rock where he went to work in the family business and began dating Melba Lucille Dicus.  They were married in 1954 and remained so until her death in 2017 (63 years).
In the late 1950’s C.B. took over full-time operation of the grocery business and slowly began to expand the business into selling guns and ammunition to local hunters.  Over the next 20 years, C.B. Thompson’s Supermarket developed into a thriving hunting business with people coming from all over the state and beyond to purchase firearms, ammunition and all manner of hunting paraphernalia.  Eventually, Fort Thompson Sporting Goods was birthed from this endeavor (1986), and the name C.B. Thompson became a legend among hunters and outdoorsmen.  Despite his business successes, C.B. remained down to earth & more comfortable in jeans and a t-shirt moving about conversing with customers than being in an office.  Those who knew him best know that he was always hyperactive (had to be moving) his entire life, extremely creative, witty and always kind and giving to a fault.  He knew how to make other people feel special, and he lived to honor Christ and to help those who were in need   He was a mentor to numerous young men and a father figure to many young ladies. He showed them all how a Christian man should live and act in his everyday life.
In 1989, a fire destroyed C.B. Thompson’s Supermarket which allowed him to focus his business interests solely on Fort Thompson and take some much deserved time off.  He and Melba drove to Alaska twice and all over the Western United States and Canada.  As grandchildren were birthed into the family, he excitedly stepped into the role of a loving grandfather and impacted the next generation for God and good.  His love for God, family and others and the many life lessons he imparted are his greatest lasting legacy.
C.B is preceded in death by his parents, C.B Thompson, Sr. and Daisy Furr Thompson, sister, Virginia Thompson, and wife, Melba Dicus Thompson. He is survived by his daughter, Joyce Ellen Carter (Phillip); son, Roy Wayne Thompson; grandsons, Andrew Hunter Thompson (Taylor), Samuel Barrett Thompson, Benjamin Cody Carter (Karen), John Caleb Carter (Hope); granddaughter, Haley Ruth Thompson (Hayden); and great-granddaughters, Briley Renee Thompson and Eliana Joy Carter.
Visitation will be on Thursday, May 28 from 4:00-8:00 P.M. and a Celebration of his Life on Friday, May 29 at 1:00 P.M.  Both will be held at Friendship Baptist Church in Sherwood (10150 Brockington).  State of AR Covid 19 directives: Face coverings required at all times. Maintain social distancing. No hugs or handshakes, please. Please visit www.smithsherwoodfuneralhome.com to sign the online guestbook.

Departed: 04/12/2020 (Sherwood)
Obituary Preview: Mary Ridgell, 70, of North Little Rock went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, April 12, 2020. She was born October 1, 1949 in Magnolia, Arkansas, to Marvin and Roma Hudgens Aubrey.
In her heart, Mary was a teacher.  A 1970 graduate of what is now Southern Arkansas University, Mary was a retired elementary school teacher, having taught over 30 years at Victory Baptist School in Sherwood.  She loved every one of her kids.  Some took more effort to reach than others, but she always strived to bring the best out of every student.  She was a teacher who everyone remembered.  Even when school was not in session, she found ways to love and educate those around her by teaching in Sunday School and Vacation Bible Schools for over 30 years in the churches in which she worshiped.  She was currently serving as a member of North View Missionary Baptist Church in North Little Rock.
She loved her Razorbacks almost as much as she loved the family that surrounded her.  There were many weekend nights where the sounds of Paul Eells, Chuck Barrett, and Mike Nail filled the house while the TV played.
Mary was truly a Southern lady who loved to cook and make people happy with food and conversation, especially her granddaughter.  Katherine held a majority stake in the heart of her “Mamie.”  There are many memories of making pies, cookies, and gingerbread houses.
Mary is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Ronnie Ridgell, of the home.  She is also survived by her son, Jason (Stephanie) Ridgell of Maumelle; granddaughter, Katherine Ridgell; brothers and sister, David (Pam) Aubrey, of Emerson, Arkansas, Linda (Mikel) Talley, of Sapulpa, Oklahoma; John (Mary) Aubrey, of Springdale, Arkansas; and four nephews and one niece.  Mary was preceded in death by her parents and in-laws, James and Amelia Ridgell.
A drop-in visitation will be held on Thursday, April 16th from 10 AM – 5 PM at Smith-Sherwood Funeral Home (7700 Highway 107, Sherwood, AR).  A private family graveside service will be held at the New Holly Springs Cemetery.  A public memorial service will be held at a later date. The family asks that anyone who desires to share memories to drop-off or create written sentiments during this time. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It serves as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with friends, family, and the community.

What is the purpose of an obituary?

The primary purpose of an obituary is to inform others of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects, offer condolences, and celebrate the life of the deceased. It also provides an opportunity to share memories and stories about the person who has passed away.

Who typically writes an obituary?

Obituaries are often written by family members, close friends, or funeral home staff. In some cases, a professional writer or journalist may be hired to write the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), and surviving family members. It may also include hobbies, achievements, and other personal details that help tell the story of the person's life.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the individual's life. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs. Online obituaries often have more flexibility in terms of length and content.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the tribute and help readers connect with the person who has passed away.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

The submission process varies depending on the publication or platform. Check their website or contact their customer service department for specific guidelines and deadlines.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, length of the obituary, and additional features such as photos or special layouts. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $500 or more.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, many people choose to write their own obituary as part of their estate planning or as a way to reflect on their life. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your story is told in your own words.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and legacy.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries are meant to be a celebration of life, so feel free to include humorous stories or touching anecdotes that capture the person's personality and spirit.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive issues or controversies surrounding the person's death or life, it's best to approach these topics with tact and discretion. Consider consulting with family members or a professional writer for guidance.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial information in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the person's memory and continue their legacy.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline varies depending on the publication's schedule and deadlines. Online obituaries are often published immediately, while print publications may take several days or weeks.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, changes cannot be made once an obituary has been published. However, some online platforms may allow for corrections or updates. Check with the publication or platform for their policies.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search online archives, visit local libraries or genealogical societies, or contact the newspaper directly to access old obituaries. Some websites specialize in archiving historical obituaries.

Can I republish an old obituary online?

Check with the original publication or copyright holder for permission to republish an old obituary online. You may need to obtain permission or provide proper attribution.

What is the role of social media in sharing obituaries?

Social media has become an important platform for sharing obituaries and condolences. Many funeral homes and online platforms offer tools for easily sharing obituaries on social media channels.

Can I create a memorial website or Facebook page for my loved one?

Yes! Memorial websites and social media pages can serve as a virtual gathering place for friends and family to share memories and pay tribute to the person who has passed away.

How do I cope with writing an obituary during a difficult time?

Writing an obituary can be a challenging task during a time of grief. Consider enlisting the help of a friend or family member, taking breaks when needed, and focusing on celebrating the person's life rather than dwelling on their passing.

What are some common mistakes to avoid when writing an obituary?

Can I use an obituary as part of my genealogical research?

Absolutely! Obituaries can provide valuable information for genealogists, including dates, relationships, and biographical details that may not be found elsewhere.

How do I preserve an original copy of an obituary?

You can save a physical copy of the newspaper or print out a copy from online. Consider laminating or framing it for preservation. You may also want to digitize it by scanning or taking a high-quality photo.

What is the significance of including funeral service details in an obituary?

Including funeral service details allows friends and family to attend the service and pay their respects in person. It also provides important information for those who cannot attend but wish to send condolences.

Can I include quotes or poetry in an obituary?

Yes! Quotes or poetry can add depth and meaning to an obituary, providing insight into the person's character or values. Choose pieces that resonate with their personality or spirit.
