Norma Fern Schweitzer - March 11, 1930 - April 29, 2024

Departed: 04/29/2024 (Cottage Grove)
Obituary Preview: Norma Fern Schweitzer, a cherished figure in her community and a beacon of creativity and joy, passed away on April 29, 2024, in Eugene, Oregon. Born on March 11, 1930, in the rural heartland of Medina, North Dakota, on the family farm.
Norma's journey through life was marked by her enduring commitment to education and service. After graduating from Medina High School in 1948, she pursued further studies at North Dakota State University from 1949 to 1952 where she earned a Bachelors of Science in Nursing. She continued her education by attending a year at the Sisters of St. Joe from 1952 to 1953. Her academic pursuits led her to a career in healthcare, where she began working at the James Town, ND Hospital from 1954 to 1960, and later at various hospitals in Denver, CO, Roseburg, OR, and Springfield, OR as a Surgery Nurse.
On June 24, 1956, Norma married the love of her life, Eldo R. Schweitzer, in Jamestown, North Dakota. Together, they built a life filled with love, adventure, and family. Norma took great pride in her role as a mother to her sons, David and Tim Schweitzer, and cherished her time as a stay-at-home mother from 1962 to 1972. Her entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly when she became part business owner, with her husband Eldo “Al” Schweitzer, of Schweitzer's Casual Wear/Work and Western Wear from 1972 until her retirement in 2014.
Norma's zest for life was evident in her many interests and hobbies. She and Eldo were a familiar sight on bowling leagues (even sponsoring their own team under the business name), and they shared a passion for golfing, snow skiing, and camping. Norma's love for the ocean and mountains was paralleled only by her talent in oil painting and her love for reading. She found solace in the simple pleasure of taking walks with Eldo, and their shared love of dance saw them twirling to the tunes of Polkas, '50s hits, big band swing, country music, and the melodies of Lawrence Welk and Peter, Paul, and Mary.
Travel was another of Norma's passions, and she and Eldo made the most of it, exploring historical sites and experiencing the wonders of the world together. Their honeymoon in Banff, Canada, was just the beginning of a lifetime filled with adventures, including trips to the Redwoods in California and a memorable cruise to Alaska.
Norma's creative spirit was a guiding force in her life, and it touched all who knew her. She was a dedicated Den mother in the Cub Scouts, where she inspired young minds with her imaginative approach to life and learning.
She leaves behind a loving family, including her sons David Schweitzer of Springfield, OR, and Tim Schweitzer of Cottage Grove, OR; her sister Laura Eberhardt of Jamestown, ND; and two adoring grandchildren. Norma was preceded in death by her beloved husband Eldo, her sister Luella Thompson, her brothers Leo, Dan, and Vernon Schelske, and her sister June Bader. Her parents, Theodore John and Johanna (Eissinger) Schelske, also preceded her in death.

Donald Conrad Prechtel - December 16, 1936 - April 21, 2024

Departed: 04/21/2024 (Cottage Grove)
Obituary Preview: Donald “Don” Conrad Prechtel of Creswell, Oregon, passed away on April 21, 2024, at the age of 87. Donald was born on December 16, 1936 in Los Angeles, California, to Elmer and Jane (Asmus) Prechtel.
Donald will be remembered as a husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, and great-grandfather. It is difficult to express the deep and lasting impact that he has had on his family and those who he interacted with over his lifetime. He was a steadfast friend, mentor, and champion for those that were lucky enough to be gathered in his circle.
Over his lifetime he became an internationally recognized historical fine artist and muralist. Don worked mostly in oil but was also accomplished in watercolor, graphite, ink work and sculpture. His artwork hangs in private collections, museums, and military installations including the Virginia Military Institute, Government House (Dublin, Ireland), the Notre Dame Alumni Association Building, and his murals provide the foundation for the Past is Present exhibit at the University of Oregon Museum of Natural and Cultural History. He was also the recipient of many artistic accolades, honors, and awards.
Don was a humble guy from Lynx Hollow who grew to be one of the leading artists of his time.
Over the last few months many of his friends and colleagues reached out to tell him what a massive influence he had been on their lives. He was there to provide introductions, give a hand up, or share an encouraging word. As a result, he built a professional network and personal relationships from coast to coast.
He was known for sharing his love of art, history, and the Old West as well as for his warmth and kindness. He spent years serving in the Creswell Presbyterian Church and was often found sharing his love of Christ.
In his faith he led by example. Leading us in prayer at all our family meals, reading his bible as others would read a novel, and sending scriptures to those that he knew were hurting and in need of support. We know that Don passed with peace in his heart and that God was waiting for him with open arms. He prepared us for this day and assured us that whenever the time came, he would be ready. He encouraged us not to dwell or be despondent upon his passing, but rather to know how much he loved us and to celebrate the amazing life he was given.
Don leaves a wife of 63 years, three children, a son-in-law, two daughters-in-law, 5 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren all of who he loved and cherished. We love you Dad, you will be missed.
Arrangements in the care of Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel.

Annette (Bowers) Gapp - October 07, 1953 - March 15, 2024

Departed: 03/15/2024 (Cottage Grove)
Obituary Preview: We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Annette Phyllis (Bowers) Gapp on March 15, 2024. Annette went home to her Lord and Savior after suffering a stroke on March 6, 2024. Annette’s unwavering lifelong faith brings to mind a quote from Charles Spurgeon, “A Bible that’s falling apart usually belongs to someone who isn’t.” She left behind a leather-bound Bible that reflected daily use since her days at San Jose Bible College. Her faith was a North Star that guided her walk and inspired deep compassion for others. She will be missed by all who loved her. Born October 7, 1953 to Phyllis Lucille and Leroy Donald Bowers, Annette was known for her faithful, energetic, and giving spirit. Annette graduated from Creswell High School in 1971 after being voted “Most Likely to Succeed” by her peers. Annette went on to be a remarkably successful homemaker, master gardener, and small farm owner. For 30 years Annette sold lavender to E.Z. Orchards Farm Market where you can still buy lavender milkshakes made with her organic buds. Annette was a devoted lap swimmer for 48 years at the Stayton Memorial Pool. On June 12, 1976, Annette married Steve J. Gapp at the Friendly Street Church of God in Eugene, Oregon. Annette was a loving mother to Jenny (Andrew), Travis, and Megan, all of whom were present at her passing. In 2009, she graduated from Oregon State University with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Sport Science. Annette could be found at local markets and orchards picking fresh fruits and vegetables for her annual canning season. An old-fashioned girl to the end, if you couldn’t reach her on the land-line you knew she was out in the yard and garden. Her exceptional work ethic cultivated years of fresh produce and flowers which she generously shared with friends and family. Annette was often seen driving around the Stayton area in one of her two Plymouth Dusters, one of which she owned for over 50 years. Annette was passionate about tea, antiques, sewing, baking, and decorating. Her home is a community icon, where thousands of daffodils bloom every spring. Over the years, Annette received a multitude of compliments from passersby. Annette was a rare breed, just like the Hereford cattle she so dearly loved. The Oregon Coast was a special place of refuge for Annette, where she loved to kick up her heels on the beach and collect seashells.
In addition to her children, Annette is survived by her husband, Steve; grandchildren, Parker, Ryan, and Esther; sister Barb (Jim) of Springfield, brother Jim (Teresa) of Cottage Grove, brother Don (Vicky) of Creswell; numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts, and friends.

Obituary Preview: Eldo “Al” Roger Schweitzer passed away on March 10, 2024, in Eugene, Oregon, at the age of 90. Born on March 20, 1933, on a farm with the assistance of his Midwife Grandmother Maria in Gackle, North Dakota, to the late John and Anna Maria (Wolf) Schweitzer.
Al was a proud graduate of Gackle High School in 1950, where he rallied school spirit as a cheerleader and played baseball, basketball and football. His academic journey continued at the North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton, where he showcased his athletic prowess on the football field. In 1959, Al earned his Bachelor of Science in Business from the University of Oregon, marking the end of his formal education and the beginning of a varied and fulfilling career.
Al’s work history is a testament to his dedication and versatility. Initially a farmer/rancher from 1933 to 1953, he moved to Oregon and began working for Pappy Ford at the Roseburg Lumber Plywood Mill in Dillard, OR, setting a record in core laying with his brother Harold. He then worked at Giustina Mill in Eugene while completing his studies at the U of O. His professional life further expanded to include roles at the Bon Marche in Eugene and Great Falls, Montana, and a stint at State Farm. From 1963 to 1972, Al was a Department Manager in menswear at The Bon, before embarking on a successful entrepreneurial venture with opening his own store, with his wife Norma, Schweitzer's Casual Wear/Work and Western Wear in Cottage Grove, Oregon, which he operated until his retirement in 2014.
Al's commitment to his community was evident in his active membership in the Elks Lodge, Moose Lodge, and the Chamber of Commerce. His competitive spirit shone through in his personal achievements, including a hole-in-one in golf, leadership awards from the Boy Scouts in Scouting, and accolades and trophies in bowling.
Al was an avid fisherman, learning the craft on the Mackenzie River and passing on the tradition to his sons, David and Tim Schweitzer. Alongside his beloved wife, Norma Ferm (Schelske) Schweitzer, whom he married on June 24, 1956, in the Congregational Church in Jamestown, North Dakota, Al enjoyed competing in bowling leagues. Golf was more than a hobby; it was a passion he indulged in as part of two men’s leagues, where his boisterous laugh became his trademark. He also enjoyed playing pool, attending rodeos, and engaging in water and snow skiing, horseback riding, hunting, and various sports. Al's love for puzzles, reading Louis L'Amour westerns, and music and dancing—ranging from polkas and 50's Big Band Swing to Country music and Lawrence Welk—reflected his vibrant and joyful spirit.
Al Schweitzer’s life was a tapestry of hard work, community service, and an unwavering commitment to his family and friends. His departure leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him, but his memory will continue to inspire laughter and joy in all who were fortunate enough to experience his larger-than-life presence. Al’s story is not just one of a life lived but of a life celebrated, a reminder to cherish every moment and to live with the same passion and vigor that he brought to each day.
Al was survived by his wife, Norma Fern (Schelske) Schweitzer of Eugene, who joined Al on April 29, 2024. Al is survived by his son David Schweitzer of Springfield, and son Tim Schweitzer of Cottage Grove; sister Rosemarie Puckett (Aunt Mickey) of Albany; 2 grandchildren.
