Later after moving back to Mobile, she went to work as a traveling phlebotomist. Darilyn enjoyed spending time with her sons,

family, and friends.

She was proceeded in death by her grandfathers, Mr. Dareyl Holt Wheaten and Mr.

Hosea Clark. She was born Dec. 8, 1945 to the parentage of the late James Vassel Sr. and Alice Becoats McCarty of Mobile, AL. She peacefully exchanged her life for eternal glory on Thursday, May 2, 2024. She was a graduate of Central High School. She was known to be loving, caring, and had a heart to minister to those who were in need. Her name was sung throughout the community for her generosity to feed the less fortunate, widows and seniors. She would literally give the shirt off of her back. She worked as the lead cater & chef for over 15 years with Bryant Catering services located in Mobile, AL. She later attended American College and received her cerification for nursing assistant. She worked tirelessly as a Certified Nursing Assistant for Cogburn Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for 15 years.

She devoted her life in serving Christ and ministering to his people. She served as a Mother and Missionary at The Church of God That Jesus Built under the leadership of Bishop George E. Moore, Sr. for several years. She never missed the opportunity to share the gospel of Jesus Christ or pray for others.

Alice Davis was preceded in death by her parents James Vassel Sr. and Alice Becoats McCarty; two brothers, James Vassel Jr., Norman BeCoats, and one sister Odessa Anderson, her grandparents Ovetta Calhoun Becoats and Wade Becoats and great-granddaughter Chosyn Crumpton.

Her legacy and memories will be cherished by her four beloved and devoted children: one son Wadie (Earnestine) Kiel III of Montgomery,AL, and three daughters, Sonja (Lawrence) Kiel-Lamar of Mobile,AL, Shanmekia (Ryshaun) Davis Crenshaw of Mobile, Al, and Alice Sharrial Victoria Davis Hines of Mobile,Al; eleven grandchildren: Wadie Kiel IV, Joshua Smith, Curtis (Jessica) Kiel, Zion Lamar, Titus (Kaylen) Lamar, Charity Davis, AshTyn Davis, Donavon Davis, Treshaun Crenshaw, Tirzah Hines, Ethan Jones, and five great-grandchildren: Justin Evans, Myla Evans Kiel, Promise Crumpton, Zyon Lamar, and Kryo Evans Kiel. She is survived by two devoted brothers: Joseph (Rachel) McCarty of Lawrenceville, GA and Vincent Becoats of Lawrenceville, GA, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Viewing service will be held on Friday, May 10, 2024 at Smalls Mortuary Funeral Home 950 S. Broad Street Mobile, Al 36603 at 4:00 pm -8:00 pm. reflecting his unwavering dedication and expertise. He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Marshall, Sr.; grandmother, Flossie Gray Knight; aunt, Ernestine Brown; and

mother-in-law, Cindy Nevills. Beyond his professional achievements, Captain Marley Ervin Marshall Sr. “Greatest Legacy” lies in his family. He shared twenty- four years of love and companionship with his devoted wife, Kendra Renee Marshall. Zella DeRamus Jackson was born on July 13, 1935, to Percy DeRamus and Ezella Stoudemire DeRamus in Autauga County, AL. At an early age, Zella accepted Christ at the Locust Bluff Methodist Church.

Zella graduated from the Autauga County Training School and subsequently, graduated from Alabama State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in English. Zella loved to tell the story of how Alabama State’s then President, Harper Council Trenholm, personally asked her if she would go to Mobile, AL to be the head of the Business Department at the then Alabama State - Branch; today known as Bishop State Community College. She accepted the job! Since Mom didn’t know anyone in Mobile, President Trenholm also arranged for her to live with a family friend, Mrs. Martha Tisdale Cunningham and recommended Warren Street Methodist Church (60+ year member). Who could have known that Zella’s connection to Mrs. Cunningham would lead her to meeting her future husband, George Matthew Jackson, Sr.

During their union, Zella had many accomplishments. She gave birth to two children: George Jr. and Katrina. She pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Delta Theta Omega Chapter “Golden Soror.” She earned a Master’s Degree in English (Alabama State University), Masters in Business Education (University of Wisconsin), and completed numerous hours towards her Doctorate in Leadership (University of Alabama). She retired from Bishop State Community College after thirty-four years of dedicated service. Her service at the Toulminville Warren United Methodist Church was dearest to her heart. This included serving in the United Methodist Women (50+ years), Good Samaritans, the Bible Study Group, the Mature Adult Group, many UMC district positions, and multiple choirs.

She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty years, George M. Jackson Sr.; her father, Percy DeRamus Sr.; her mother, Ezella; two brothers: Percy Jr., (Henrietta) and Harrison (Mittie).

Zella leaves to cherish her precious memory, two children: George Jr. (LaTonya) and Katrina (Christopher); seven grandchildren: Sydney, Shelbi, Kendall, Kelsey, George III, Kennedy and Alexandra; one brother, Clemon (Brenda); one sister, Loretta (Ezekiel); and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins; one dedicated niece and nephew, Oxzona and Pat Green. She also leaves to cherish her memory a host of friends: one like a sister, Lucy Bell; like a daughter and son, Cynthia and Wilfred Bolden; and like a son, Chris Lucas.

Melvin Arthur Johnson, Sr. was born January 17, 1959 to the union of Frank Joseph Johnson and Annie Mae Cratin Johnson. Melvin was a beloved father, husband, brother, uncle, and friend to many. His life was marked by dedication, service, and love.

His journey began in Mobile, AL where he attended Murphy High School and was a proud graduate of the Class of 1977. He grew up in “The Bottom” and Orange Grove Projects. He played football for Murphy. It was at Murphy where he dated his high school sweetheart and soulmate, Darlene Cameron. They wed soon after graduating and together nurtured a beautiful family. Their union blessed them with three wonderful children: one daughter, Reshawn and two sons: Melvin, Jr. and Marquis.

Melvin embarked on a noble career in the United States Navy as a storekeeper. His Navy career spanned from 1979-1986. Melvin’s devotion to his family was unwavering and he faced many challenges; but his love for them knew no bounds. They later divorced and Melvin remained in Virginia where he studied and began an extensive career as an electrician. He contributed his skills to various projects including the repair of the Pentagon after the tragic events of 9/11. His dedication and expertise left an indelible mark on those he worked with. While in Virginia he also developed a long-lasting relationship and friendship with his beloved companion Gloria Walker.

In 2019, Melvin retired to his hometown in Mobile, AL where he found joy in reconnecting with cherished friends and family. His presence brought warmth and laughter to those around him, and his kindness left a lasting impression on all who knew him. Melvin had seven grandchildren whom he adored and loved wholeheartedly. Being home in Mobile allowed him the opportunity to be closer to his grandchildren and he enjoyed every moment he got to spend with them.

Melvin was a devout Murphy High School Alumnus and an avid, aggressive Dallas Cowboy fan. He spent his last years in a happy relationship with Margaret Tolbert. In recent years, Melvin gave his life to the Lord and was an active member of New Generation Church.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Annie Johnson; siblings: Frankie Mason, Frank Johnson, Jr., Flora Edwards, Helen Dixon, Joyce Johnson and Joseph Johnson; his ex-wife, Darlene Cameron Johnson McZeek.

Melvin leaves his legacy to his children: his only daughter, Reshawn Monique Cameron; and sons: Melvin Arthur Johnson, Jr. and Marquis Antwan Johnson; grandchildren: Rodney Jay Weatherspoon, Jr., Raquel Jeneva Weatherspoon, Keanna Kate Johnson, Melanie Nicole Johnson, Nicolas Parker Johnson, Bryce Alejandro Johnson and Brandon Guillermo Johnson; his companions: Gloria Walker and Margaret Tolbert; his siblings: Betty Murphy, Callie Finley, Edward Marshall, Willie Johnson, Beverly Johnson; and Sherrell Collins; nephews and nieces: Derek Johnson, Rodney Johnson, Stephen Johnson, Michael Stevenson, Brian Hall, Jasmine Reese and Kia Johnson; and a host of great- nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends whom he has created many memorable moments with.
