He dedicated 30 years of his life to Shillers Trucking Company as a truck driver. He always had a passion for being on his cell phone playing Candy Crush and watching car shows on TV.

Attending Garber High School and graduating from Manhattan High School in 1973, Debbie went on to attend nursing school, before dedicating herself to the VanTol Family Farm. She later worked as a technician at Wavetech in Florida. When her children were younger, Debbie also shared her enthusiasm for cheerleading as a coach at John Glenn High School and enjoyed volunteering for many activities within the Essexville-Hampton School District. Debbie found solace in writing poetry, a talent that reflected her gentle soul.
Debbie's zest for life extended to the sport of tennis and had a special admiration for the legendary Rafa Nadal. Her culinary skills were a source of delight for her loved ones, with her memorable meals bringing people together. Debbie will be deeply missed, yet lovingly remembered for years to come.
To carry on her legacy, Debbie leaves her children, Deborah Annie (Daniel) Quinn, Derek (Areewan) Czap, and Nicole (Austin) Czap; father, William (Judy) Finn; step-father, Paul Hunt; grandchildren, Harmony, Calynn, Kole, Kane, Dylan, and Emily; siblings, Thomas (Jeanette) Dinan, Kathy Conway, Robert Borchardt, Francie (Mike) McGinnis, Dennis (Barb) Banaszak; uncle, Gary Walther, along with many nieces and nephews. Obituary Preview: Sandra Kay Ballard, 85, of Hampton Twp., our loving and caring, mother, sister and aunt passed away on Monday, March 11, 2024. Sandy was born on June 5, 1938, in Bay City to the late George and Virginia (Kopec) Ayotte, Sandy attended St. Boniface for grade school and went on to graduate from St. Joseph High School in the class of 1956.
Sandy’s faith was central to her life, as a dedicated parishioner at St. Jude Thaddeus Parish and a proud member of the Knights of Columbus. She spent many years as a secretary at Morris King Candy Distributers, where her warmth and dedication left a lasting impact.
Sandy’s life was filled with love, particularly for her late husband Franklin Ballard, whom she met at his family’s meat market in Linwood. They were married on October 15, 1960, and shared 52 beautiful years together until Franklin’s passing on August 28, 2013.
In her leisure time, Sandy cherished reading, watching television, and most of all, spending precious moments with her family. A highlight of her life was visiting California with Franklin, where they even had the honor of meeting and spending time on President Ronald Reagan’s ranch.
Sandy is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Christopher (Teresa) Ballard, along with her brothers, George (JoAnn) and Michael (Pamela) Ayotte, and several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. She is now reunited in heaven with her sister and brother-in-law, Sylvia and Edward Maguire.

Born in Bay City on August 7, 1948, Don was the son of the late Oscar Naert and Almira Catherine (Wiedyk) Bokhart. A graduate of St. John’s High School in 1966 and later Central Michigan University, he embarked on a career that saw him excel in various endeavors, from teaching at John Glenn High School to retiring as a partner at Faulkner Construction.
While working at Jennison Hardware, Don met the former Maureen Schubert. Don married his beloved wife on December 23, 1972, and together they raised a strong, independent daughter. He took pride in mentoring others, always ready to share his wisdom and skills with those around him. He balanced his professional pursuits with his personal life, finding joy in woodworking, tending to his orchard, and coaching little league to great success, fostering camaraderie and sportsmanship in his players. Donald’s generosity extended beyond his family and friends, as he supported various charitable organizations, including the Good Samaritan Rescue Mission, Bay Area Women’s Center, and Hidden Harvest. Don was a JOAT-MON (jack of all trades; master of none) who enjoyed life, hosting gatherings, and loved his family more than life itself. His legacy of generosity and mentorship will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Obituary Preview: Melvin Edward “Clarence” Polega, a hardworking and devoted family man, entered this world on March 12, 1944 in Kinde, and was born into eternal life on the evening of Saturday, March 9, 2024 at his Bay City residence, age 79. The son of the late Edward and Esther (Glaza) Polega, Melvin found joy in assisting his father on the family farm, cultivating a lifelong love for farming.
Meeting his beloved wife Marie E. (Bolda) Polega during his high school years at North Huron High School in Kinde, the two were united in marriage on June 20, 1970, at St. Edward’s Church. Melvin dedicated 40 years to General Motors in the shipping and receiving department, retiring in 2005. A faithful Catholic, Melvin was a parishioner of Corpus Christi Parish.
Melvin’s green thumb was well-known, as he cherished summer gardening and took pride in cultivating fresh, healthy produce for his family and friends. Beyond his agricultural pursuits, Melvin was a member of various organizations, including the Knights of Columbus, Eagles, Future Farmers of America, and the Gera Tractor Club. Melvin was also known for his love of rebuilding and restoring countless antique tractors.
Family always came first with Melvin; he will forever be remembered for his unwavering love of his three children, and constant support and spoiling of his grandchildren. His legacy will forever live on.
To carry on his legacy, Melvin leaves the love of his life, his soulmate of 53 years, Marie Polega; three children, Ed (Amanda) Polega, Melissa Ososki (Scott Jensen), and Pamela (Jason) Perkins. He was the most loving and supportive “JahJah” of Jayden, Macy, and Carson Perkins; Wyatt, Nash, and Elise Ososki, and Evan and Logan Polega. Survivors also include his sister, Tina (John) Baker; brother-in-law, Charles (Joann) Bolda, along with many nieces, nephews, and friends in the Thumb, who knew him as “Clarence.” In addition to his parents, Melvin was preceded in death by his brother, Carl Polega; sister, Jeanette Kubacki; father and mother-in-law, Tony and Margaret Bolda and brothers-in-law, Harry Wisneski, Henry Kubacki, Alan Bolda, and Kenneth Bolda.

Obituary Preview: John “JC” Charles Martin, 74, of Bay City, our hardworking, caring, and devoted husband, father, and Papa passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2024 at MyMichigan Medical Center in Midland, with his family by his side.
John was born in Bay City on October 11, 1949, son of the late Nina (Chevalier) Newcombe. He was part of the 1968 graduating class at John Glenn High School. While at a dance at Band Canyon in Bay City, he met the former Nancy Polzin. He asked her to dance and he swept her off her feet. They dated, fell in love, and were united in marriage on June 27, 1970. They built a lovely family, shared countless memories together, and celebrated 53 years of marriage.
John dedicated over three decades of his life to his work at Newcor in Bay City, where he was a skilled tool and die maker and millwright. Not one to sit still, John pursued his passion for entertainment as the owner and operator of System 3 Productions, bringing joy and laughter to countless individuals through his Karaoke and DJ services.
Beyond his professional endeavors, John was a versatile individual with a knack for restoring antique cars and tractors. An avid car enthusiast, he enjoyed participating in car shows and was particularly fond of Oakland and Pontiac vehicles. John expressed his love for people through his cooking. He always had cookies available for his grandchildren. His passion was evident to all who tasted his dishes, especially his pizza with all the toppings, showcasing his creative flair in the kitchen.
Throughout his life, John was an active member of the Eagles, Antique Automobile Club of America, Pontiac Oakland Club International (POCI), Oakland Pontiac Enthusiasts Organization (OPEO), and the Oakland Owners Club International (OOCI), fostering friendships and connections within these communities that lasted a lifetime.
John leaves behind cherished memories for his loving wife, Nancy; daughters, Melissa (Dan) Harrington, Tammy (Evan) Weckerly, and Tracey (Benjamin) Bates; grandchildren, Lily Harrington, Alexander Harrington, Caleb Harrington, Katherine Harrington, Sloane Weckerly, Reid Weckerly, Carter Bates, and Logan Bates, and nephew, Greg Martin. Along with his mother, John was preceded in death by his brothers, Lester and Michael Martin. John leaves behind a legacy of kindness and generosity that will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Graduating from Bay City Central High School, Randy pursued his love for art at Michigan State University, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts. Throughout his life, he crafted exquisite paintings that now adorn walls across the globe, leaving a lasting legacy in the world of art.
Apart from his artistic endeavors, Randy was a drummer and even played in a band after college called Foodchain. He was a talented cook, appreciated fine dining and even enjoyed writing. His creativity knew no bounds, whether wielding a paintbrush or drumsticks, and his love for life reflected in everything he did.
Randy was united in marriage with his beloved wife, Peggy Francis, on October 12, 1996. Their love was a source of strength and joy. Sadly, Peggy preceded Randy in death in 2017.
He leaves behind a rich tapestry of memories for his family and friends to cherish: his father, Ronald B. (Marilyn) Huiskens; his mother, Brenda Weiss; his brother, Ronald W. After graduation, she embarked on a journey of service proudly serving her country in the Navy where she served as a machine operator in Long Beach, California, before returning home to pursue her education at Delta College. Patti’s dedication and hard work paid off as she earned her bachelor’s degree in applied science. Her caring nature and gift of hospitality shone through in her work at various local establishments, where she not only served drinks but also served up plenty of laughter and smiles.
Known for her love of the outdoors, Patti enjoyed activities such as bike riding, bodybuilding competitions, and soaking up the sun. Her eccentric and hilarious ways endeared her to many, leaving a lasting impact on all who crossed her path. Patti was a woman who brought joy and laughter to all who knew her.
Patti is survived by her beloved sons, Tanner (Kristin McCullogh) Kochanny-Rosinski and Channing (Brooke Strawn) Kochanny-Slachta; parents, William and Joy Kochanny; sister, Juli Kochanny; niece, Amber Joy Kochanny, and four-legged furry companions, Macy, Piggy, and Simba. Patti was preceded in death by her half-brother, Todd Ferranti.

Eleanor was known for her charm, wit, and unwavering love for her family. She leaves behind cherished memories for her children, Scott E. Wizner, Kimberly (Tim) Samalik, and Timothy J. Paula was born on February 15, 1935 in Bay City, the daughter of the late Paul and Helen (Karpus) Malleck. She graduated from St. James High School and married Dale Johnson on February 15, 1958. Their marriage was blessed with 60 years before Dale preceded Paula in death in July of 2018. Throughout life, Paula worked in banking and for her husband’s company, Johnson Construction. In their younger years, Dale and Paula enjoyed wintering in Miami, playing golf, and owning race horses.
Paula is survived by her daughter, Sandra K. Sepulvedo (James Kerr); grandson, David A. Sepulvedo (Presleigh Derosette); granddaughter, Melisa S. Garrett; brothers, Michael Malleck and Max (Laura) Malleck; eight nieces and nephews, and their families: Michelle (Ken) Grzegorczyk, Stephen Malleck (Touti Williams), Molly (Joe) Lombardi, Marcy Sauer, Paul (Tiffany) Malleck, Amy (Roger) Petrous, Chris (April) Marchlewicz, and Mitchell (Samantha) Malleck; her brother-in-law, Timothy Marchlewicz, and her dear friend from high school, Jean. Bob graduated from Bay City Central High School with the Class on 1979 and attended Delta College. He was a dedicated employee of Nexteer Automotive and had also worked in the trucking industry for Swift Trucking, and on his family’s potato farm. He met the love of his life, Lori Swincicki, while at work, and the two shared a beautiful journey that began on March 31, 2007 at their Caribbean wedding in St. Thomas, USVI.
During his free time, Bob found solace in playing the guitar, trying his luck with scratch-off lottery tickets, and enjoying a good game of Blackjack at the casino. His love for hunting, particularly for bear and deer, was known by many. Anyone who knew Bob could attest to his passion for spending time with his dogs, who brought him immense joy and companionship throughout his life.
Bob will forever be missed by his wife, Lori Bublitz; sister, Gail (Larry) Kleinert; niece and goddaughter, Tiffany (Rick) Escherich; great niece and great nephew, Molly and Jase, along with many friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his niece, Stephanie Mielens.

A graduate of Bay City Central High School in 1977, Tim went on to work as a supervisor at Synagro Biotechnologies, where he excelled in his role. However, his true love lay in farming, a passion he carried with him throughout his life, starting as a young boy. His skills as a tradesman were unmatched, with a talent for fixing anything and a knack for automotive body painting that showcased his eye for perfection.
Tim’s love for collecting toy tractors, and affection for anything fast and noisy, was well-known among his countless friends, with whom he cherished spending happy hour. Above all, he treasured his role as a Grandpa, finding joy and happiness in the love of his family. Tim will be deeply missed, yet lovingly remembered for years to come.
To carry on his legacy, Tim leaves his two sons, Cody O’Leary and Adam (Jessica) O’Leary; grandchildren, Owen, Kallie, and Olivia; brother, Terence (Tammy) O’Leary; sister, Shelli O’Leary; nieces, Brittany and Madison, along with countless friends. Scott was born on March 20, 1980 in Bay City, the son of Daniel S. and Mary (Badour) Kaczmarek. Scott lived a life filled with passion for athletics and the great outdoors. An avid crossfit enthusiast, ultra marathon runner, and enthusiastic mountain biker, he embraced every opportunity to challenge himself physically. His love for nature extended to his cherished time at the family cabin in Grand Marais, where he loved snowmobiling and enjoying the great outdoors. Back home, Scott enjoyed farming.
Scott was a graduate of Bay City Central High School, Class of 1998. It was during his time in high school that he met his beloved wife, the former Andrea Stefanski, whom he married on March 11, 2006. Their marriage was a testament to love, loyalty, and unwavering companionship.
Scott’s dedication extended beyond his personal life into his professional endeavors, where he found joy and fulfillment as a Superintendent at Spence Brothers. A committed member of Carpenter’s Local 706, Scott’s work ethic and leadership were truly admirable.
Scott’s love for his family and friends was unmatched; he left a lasting impact on all who knew him, and he will be forever missed.
To carry on his legacy, Scott leaves his loving wife, Andrea Kaczmarek, and his two children, who were the light of his life: Kyler and Kallie Kaczmarek. He was born on May 19, 1934, in Weidman, Michigan, the son of the late Melvin and Lilly (Smith) Gross.
John was a dedicated and accomplished individual. After graduating from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1952, he pursued his passion for pharmacy, earning his degree from Ferris State University. John dedicated over 50 years of his life to his profession, serving as a trusted pharmacist at various establishments, including the K-Mart Pharmacy and Bay Osteopathic Hospital, where he was Chief Pharmacist for several years. After retiring, John worked part-time at Maplewood Pharmacy, until his well-deserved final retirement in 2016. His commitment to his career was revered by his colleagues and appreciated by the countless patients whose lives he positively impacted.
While working at the K-Mart Pharmacy, the beautiful head cashier, the former D. Marletta “Marty” Couch, caught his eye. The two dated, fell in love, and were united in marriage on April 13, 1991.
Outside of work, John had a deep love for music, particularly country music. He had a fond memory of attending a concert by Little Jimmy Dickens as a young boy in rural Isabella County, sparking a lifelong passion for the genre. John enjoyed traveling, with trips to Nashville being a highlight, where he could immerse himself in the vibrant country music scene.
John was also an active member of his community and church. For over 25 years, he was a faithful member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, where he served as the church bookkeeper. His dedication and commitment to his faith were evident to all who knew him.
Remembered for his integrity, dry sense of humor, and kind-hearted nature, John touched the lives of many. He possessed a meticulous and proficient approach to life and had a relentless love for gardening and the great outdoors. John’s thirst for knowledge was reflected in his love for reading, which enriched his life and broadened his horizons. John will be sorely missed, but his legacy of dedication and thoughtfulness will live on in the hearts of those he loved and inspired.
John is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Marty Gross; children, John B. Gross, James (Amanda) Gross, and Jeffrey (Melissa) Gross; step-children, Sharlynn “Shari” Rhodes, Myra (Oscar) Leon, and Rev. Joseph (Laura) Atchinson; grandchildren, Jonathan (Brittany) Gross, Elijah Gross, Elisha (Isaiah) Raab, Jonah Gross, and Nicole Gross; great-granddaughter, Lilly Gross; many step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren, and his sister, Peggy Fussman. He will also be deeply missed by his extended family, friends, and all those whose lives he forever changed. In addition to his parents, John was welcomed home to Heaven by his daughter, Cindy Rose Gross; brother, Joseph Gross, and sisters, Betty Funnel and Kay Dent.

Known for her caring nature and genuine compassion, Dianna touched the lives of all those fortunate enough to know her. Her kind and gentle spirit will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and colleagues.
Dianna had a deep love for animals, having spent her childhood surrounded by two cherished horses and a multitude of loyal dogs. She carried this love throughout her life, always showing kindness and compassion to all creatures great and small.
Dianna attended St. John’s in Essexville for grade school. After graduating from Garber High School, she attended Delta College. Her career path led her to meet Dr. Richard Rahall while working in the office. They dated, fell in love, and were united in marriage on March 19, 1993. Throughout life, Dianna worked in medical billing, as a certified surgical technician, and was the office manager of her husband’s practice. Dianna’s commitment to her work, coupled with her empathetic nature, made her an invaluable asset to her colleagues and the patients she served.
Beyond her professional pursuits, Dianna indulged in many creative interests. An artistic and crafty lady, she found joy in stained glass, ceramics, quilting, and floral arranging. Dianna also had a green thumb and delighted in nurturing her garden. She also loved to feed the local bird population, who were frequent visitors.
One of Dianna’s greatest pleasures was traveling, and she cherished the memories of her trip to Alaska. Exploring the majestic landscapes and immersing herself in the beauty of nature brought her immense joy and peace.
Dianna’s legacy of love, kindness, and selflessness will live on in the hearts of her survivors, including her devoted husband of over three decades, Dr. Richard Rahall. In addition to her loving husband, she leaves behind her siblings, Frank Zajac, Terry Zajac, and Susan Mills; sisters-in-law, Mary Jo Zajac and Patricia Stadler, along with her nieces and nephews, Jeremy (Pamela) Zajac, Randy (Abby) Zajac, Michael (Sarah) Zajac, Kristen Butler, Kalli Zavorka, Rhena (Chad) Leitermann, and Aaron Mills and several great nieces and nephews. Obituary Preview: Richard James Bader Jr., 70, of Saginaw Twp., our kind, generous, and devoted husband, brother, uncle, and friend passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, February 12, 2024. Rich was born on April 19, 1953, in Carrollton, the son of the late Richard and Grace (Richardson) Bader Sr.
Rich cherished his childhood days in Carrollton. As a young man, he loved swimming with his siblings, visiting his uncle Court and aunt Elenor’s cottage in Pinconning, and sharing countless rounds of golf with his brother and father. He graduated from Carrollton High School in 1971. He dedicated 17 years of his professional life to Eaton Corporation. He retired from the lab quality control department at Dow Corning in 2010 after many years of loyal service.
In 1984, Rich crossed paths with the former, Lynn Sienko. Their first date, a fun-filled evening of bowling, marked the beginning of a lifelong journey. On December 26, 1986, in a beautiful ceremony filled with joy and warmth, Rich and Lynn exchanged vows, vowing to love and support each other until the end of time.
A faithful Christian, Rich found peace and strength in his spiritual journey. He enjoyed engaging his mind with crossword puzzles, passionately cheering for the Detroit Lions, Tigers and Michigan football, and spending leisurely days on the golf course with his special friend, Mike. His love for music, particularly gospel, filled his heart with joy, and he relished attending concerts whenever he had the chance. One of his greatest pastimes was engaging in conversations with family and friends. To escape the cold Michigan winters, Rich and Lynn would retreat to Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, creating new memories in the sunshine and on the sandy shores.
Rich’s caring nature extended well beyond his family and career. For years, he selflessly served as a volunteer driver for the American Cancer Society and Northern Star Transportation, supporting those in need. His dedication earned him the prestigious Volunteer of the Year award and recognized him as a pillar of the community. Rich was a wealth of knowledge and was always willing to help others. Having a heart to help and serve others, he was eager to lend a hand whenever called upon.
To carry on his legacy, Rich leaves his loving wife, Lynn; siblings, Frank (Barb) Bader and Susan Bader; nieces and nephews, Anna Bader, Andrea Sienko, Rachael (Gabe) Foor, Angela (Joshua) Schramm, Michelle, Jennifer, and Mhari-Anna Mesecher; great-niece Libby Rivette, great-nephew, Josiah Schramm, and brother-in-law, Steven (Jill) Sienko. Spending quality time with her niece and nephew was a source of great joy for her, and she cherished every opportunity she had to create lasting bonds with them. Sunday BBQs with her family were a longstanding tradition that brought everyone together, creating treasured moments filled with love and laughter. Additionally, Debbie enjoyed the occasional visit to the casino with her mother, Lupe, as they shared a special bond and made lasting memories. Debbies kind and nurturing spirit extended beyond her family as she maintained close friendships throughout her life. Her monthly getaways with her dear friends and cousins provided an opportunity for relaxation, rejuvenation, and the creation of cherished bonds that will be treasured forever. To carry on her legacy, Deborah leaves her brothers, Richard (Deidre) Aranjo and Roy Aranjo (Patricia Zavala); niece and nephew, Anthony (Allison) Aranjo and Jessica Aranjo; step-niece and step-nephew, Samantha and Cody Kizis; great-nieces and nephews, Adrian, Abram, and Amelia Aranjo, and aunts and uncles, Ben (Ann) Cortez, Jerry (Mary) Cortez, Ruby (Glen) Boensch, Viola (Julian) Gonzales, and Dan Cortez. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her aunts and uncles, Victor (Avelina) Cortez, Manuel Cortez, Hernan (Helen) Cortez, Lucy (Tom) Aguirre, Laura (Nino) Sanchez, and Mary Cortez. Debbies family will be present to receive visitors on Friday, February 16, 2024 from 10:00 AM until Debbies 11:00 AM Memorial Mass at St. Joseph Parish, 910 N. 6th Ave., Saginaw. Obituary Preview: Richard William Schoof, 62, of Hampton Twp., our funny and generous brother, uncle, and friend passed away unexpectedly at his home on Thursday, February 8, 2024. Rick was born on October 8, 1961, in Bay City, the son of the late Walter and Pat (Felske) Schoof.
Rick was a proud graduate of Bay City Central High School, where he cultivated lasting friendships and memories. Following his passion for movies, he became a skilled projectionist at the West Towne Theatre, enchanting audiences with his meticulous attention to detail and love for the cinematic arts. In later years, he contributed to the Bay City Public Schools as a custodian, retiring after 10 years of dedicated service.
Sports played a significant role in Rick’s life, and he cheered passionately for his favorite teams. He was an avid supporter of the Detroit Lions and Tigers, and the Michigan Wolverines, often engaging in spirited debates with friends and family about the teams’ performances. His enthusiasm extended to his local community, where he wholeheartedly supported Bay City Central sports. He also enjoyed watching an occasional hockey game.
Rick’s kind-hearted nature and willingness to lend a helping hand were commendable. He had a heart of gold and found joy in giving back to those in need. Rick will forever be remembered for his infectious laughter, his love of life, and his ability to find humor in every situation. His presence enriched the lives of those around him, and his absence will be deeply felt.
To carry on his legacy, Rick leaves his siblings, Allen (Roseanne) Schoof, Carol Wakefield, Larry (Deborah) Schoof, and David (Lisa) Schoof), along with several nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, Rick was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Thomas Wakefield.
Rick’s family will be present to receive visitors on Friday, February 16, 2024, at 10:00 AM until his Memorial Ceremony at 11:00 AM at Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church, 1010 33rd Street, Bay City.
