Jan R. (Bleicher) DeWyse - June 17, 1942 - April 17, 2024

Departed: 04/17/2024 (Essexville)
Obituary Preview: With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Jan R. (Bleicher) DeWyse. She was born into eternal life on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 at her home in Hampton Twp., with her family at her side. Age 81 years. Jan now rests in the arms of Jesus. Born in Bay City on June 17, 1942 to Jay and Joan (Link) Bleicher, Jan would tell you she lived a blessed life. She knew well the importance of family and friends and cared deeply for them. She loved to laugh and was always up for any kind of adventure, no matter how near or far. She would never hesitate to jump in the car and go if it meant a good time!
Jan began working at age 15, first at Czuba’s Five and Dime, and then at Wendland’s department store in downtown Bay City. After graduating from Visitation High School in 1960, Jan then worked at The Bay City Times while attending classes at Bay City Junior College.
With a sparkle in her eyes, she would proudly tell us of the time she met the love of her life, Gerald “Jerry” DeWyse, through a chance meeting at the Starlite Drive-In. Originally hoping to bump into another young man that evening, Jan quickly noticed and was distracted by a shiny new ‘59 red Chevy Impala that had arrived at the drive-in. She admitted that she was first attracted to the car, but it wasn’t long before the owner of that Impala had won over her heart, and Jan and Jerry were united in marriage at St. Vincent de Paul Church in Bay City on September 8, 1962. While she was shy as a child and grew up in a small family, Jan had to quickly learn how to speak up and be heard after marrying into the extended DeWyse family, acquiring five additional brothers and sisters-in-law, whom she cherished and loved as her own, and over 130 first cousins! While at first overwhelming to her, it was with the DeWyse family where she found her voice and her sense of humor. With her smile, her bright blue eyes, and authentic personality, Jan could strike up a conversation with anyone, and often did.
Together, Jan and Jerry raised a family of three children in Hampton Township, and partnered together to carry on family traditions – including a family dinner together nearly every night, a never-wavering, strong Catholic faith that always included Mass on Sunday, often followed by coffee at Babe and Leo’s house afterward, and no matter what, always making sure that memories were being made in both the small and the big moments. Jan and Jerry made time together as a couple as well and enjoyed many social and charity events through the Essexville Knights of Columbus Council 2740, especially state conferences on Mackinac Island, through countless church functions, bowling tournaments, casino bus trips, lots of card games and endless laughs with the “Rabbit Hunters,” many camping adventures with good friends, and traveling near and far with special friends and family.
After her three children were of school age, Jan accepted a part-time position as a sales clerk in the men’s department at J.C. Penney in downtown Bay City. Over the years, she met and became good friends with so many, but especially Laura, Alice “AB,” Pauline, and Edna. The shenanigans were many with these characters, and there may have been some mischief now and then on the sales floor when management wasn’t looking! The fun continued for many years after retirement during special lunches, road trips, and afternoon card games. Jan dedicated 25 years of her life to J.C. Penney, finally retiring as a data entry specialist in 2002, to enjoy more time to travel with Jerry, to explore her artistry and work with her flowers and landscaping, but mostly to spend time with her grandchildren. Jan and Jerry traveled both at home and abroad and met many new friends along the way, especially during several winters near Destin, Florida. Until more recently, they never missed Mass together at St. Jude Thaddeus Parish, where they were faithful parishioners and served in many capacities over six decades. We are confident her faith carried her through the last several months of her life.
Her grandchildren were the true joy and light of Jan’s life, and nothing brought her more happiness than when one of them would walk in the door. She enjoyed every minute with them, whether it was making cookies or crafts together, cheering them on at many school and sporting events or traveling with them. Many cherished stories and often-repeated quotes and inside jokes originated through numerous family trips and happenings with Grandma! She was always such a good sport when Zach, Joanna, and Carlie would tease her about anything and everything, and as a result, their grandma taught them that it’s important to be able to laugh at yourself and not take life too seriously. They each enjoyed a close bond with their grandma and will hold so many treasured memories close to their hearts. She will be forever missed, but we are all comforted by knowing she is watching over us. We promise to keep her memory alive and well by loving deeply and laughing often.
Jan’s legacy continues to live on in the hearts of those who loved her. Jan leaves her loving and devoted husband of 61 years, Jerry; three children, Joan (Jerry) Czinder of Essexville, James DeWyse of South Carolina, and Julie (Todd) Mayer of Auburn; eight grandchildren; her dear sister, June (Clarence) Tanigawa of Kauai, and brother, James (Brooke) Bleicher of Lansing, along with her brothers and sisters-in-law, and several nieces and nephews.
Jan was welcomed home to heaven by her parents, her father and mother-in-law, Leo and Leona “Babe” DeWyse, and a brother-in-law, Robert DeWyse.
